Lillian L. Stewart

HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. - Lillian Lee Stewart, 77, of Harpers Ferry, died Friday, Aug. 13, 1999, at Canterbury of Shepherdstown, Shepherdstown, W.Va.

Born May 2, 1922, in Gerrardstown, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Daniel Winfield and Amanda McCarthy Custer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin Gardner Stewart, in 1997.

She was a member of Bakerton Church of God.

She is survived by two sons, Gardner Lee Stewart of Bakerton, W.Va., and Timothy Allen Stewart Sr. of Kearneysville, W.Va.; two sisters, Blanche Fraley of Frederick, Md., and Marie Davis of Hagerstown; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, David F. Stewart; two sisters, Emily Zombro and Virginia Cook; and a brother, William V. Custer.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Samples Manor Church of God, Samples Manor, Md. The Rev. Charles Gower and the Rev. William Long will officiate. Burial will be in Samples Manor cemetery, Samples Manor.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Eackles-Spencer Funeral Home, 970 Washington St., Harpers Ferry. For the convenience of friends, the funeral home will be open today from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

George F. Eckerd

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - George Foster Eckerd, 82, of Berkeley Springs, died Saturday, Aug. 14, 1999, at Valley View Nursing Home in Berkeley Springs.

Born Feb. 9, 1917, in Berkeley Springs, he was the son of the late George Elmer and Martha Anne Ardella Michael Eckerd.

He attended Spohrs Crossroads School in Morgan County, W.Va.

During the early 1940s, he worked at Earl Peer's sawmill. He worked with Victor Products, Berkeley Springs, during the early 1950's and with Fairchild Aircraft in Hagerstown from 1956 until 1960. He worked as a builder with Yost Building Supply in Berkeley Springs from 1960 until 1980 and also drove a school bus with the Morgan County Board of Education from 1965 until his retirement in 1980.

He served in the U. S. Army in the South Pacific Theater during World War II, earned the rank of sergeant and was awarded the American Defense Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal.

He was a member of Berkeley Springs Church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ella Genevieve Linden Eckerd; two daughters, Marilyn M. Hall and Sue Anne Grace Ritchie, both of Berkeley Springs; a son, Rodney Eckerd of Berkeley Springs; a sister, Freda E. Moore of Berkeley Springs; a brother, Ralph Eckerd of Berkeley Springs; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Barbara E. Peer and Janetta Silvers; and two brothers, Jamsey H. Eckerd and Charles Eckerd.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs. Clarence McDowell, evangelist, will officiate. Burial with graveside military honors will be in Spohrs Crossroads cemetery, Morgan County.

The family will receive friends Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. For the convenience of friends, the funeral home will be open Monday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Claudia V. Racey

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Claudia Virginia Racey, 85, of Martinsburg, died Friday, Aug. 13, 1999, at Heartland Nursing Home.

Born Aug. 15, 1913, in Shenandoah County, Va., she was the daughter of the late John Wesley and Rosalee Miller Stine.

She was retired from the former Interwoven Stocking Co.

She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.

She is survived by a stepson, Roland Racey of Cordele, Ga.; close friends, Charles B. and Dorothy L. Avey of Martinsburg; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by five sisters and four brothers.

Graveside services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Rosedale cemetery. The Rev. James D. Riley Jr. will officiate.

Arrangements are by Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.

Betty L. Chance

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Betty L. Smith Chance, 64, of Martinsburg, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999, at City Hospital in Martinsburg.

Born Feb. 14, 1935, in Martinsburg, she was the daughter of the late David Elby and Annie Elizabeth Kline Smith.

She retired from Perfection Garment Co.

She was a member of Winchester Avenue Christian Church.

She is survived by a daughter, Debra Jo Smith of Martinsburg; and four sisters, Dolly Spaulding, Anna Smallwood and Edna Welch, all of Martinsburg, and Mary Heckart of Philadelphia.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mae Robinson and Ida Teets; and a brother, Thomas E. Smith.

Services will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. Douglas J. Hollida will officiate. Burial will be in Gerrardstown Presbyterian cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ralph L. Stephens

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Ralph L. Stephens, 72, of Martinsburg, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1999, at his home.

Born June 8, 1927, in Martinsburg, he was the son of the late George C. Sr. and Julia A. Underdonk Stephens.

He was a 1947 graduate of Martinsburg High School.

He retried as a supervisor at DuPont.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served during the Korean War.

He was a member of Second Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret A. Keesecker Stephens; three daughters, Julia Ann Gatrell, Karen L. Butcher and Pamela M. Butcher, all of Martinsburg; three sons, Craig Douglas Stephens of Inwood, W.Va., Scott Hunter Stephens and Mark Wayne Stephens, both of Martinsburg; two sisters, Anna M. Miller and Sylvia Murphy, both of Martinsburg; seven grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cynthia Joan Stephens; and two brothers, George C. Stephens Jr. and Nuylin C. Stephens.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Second Baptist Church. The Rev. R. Shawn Edwards will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg.

Memorial donations may be made to Second Baptist Church, 911 N. High St., Martinsburg, WV 25401; or Hospice of the Panhandle, 2015 Boyd Orchard Court, Martinsburg, WV 25401.

Mark S. Lewis

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Mark Steven "Chub" Lewis, 39, of 207 N. Princess St., and formerly of Sharpsburg, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1999, at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

Born April 12, 1960, in Martinsburg, W.Va., he was the son of Dale L. Sr. and Esther L. Crist Lewis of Sharpsburg.

He was employed as a technician with Mercury Communications in Harpers Ferry, W.Va. He had been a self-employed carpenter.

He was a member of North American Fishing Club; and Antietam Post No. 236 Sons of the American Legion in Sharpsburg.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Christine S. Hocko Lewis; a brother, Dale L. Lewis Jr. of Boonsboro; maternal grandmother, Blanche Dunkin of Boonsboro; nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. The Rev. Anne O. Weatherholt will officiate.

Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery in Sharpsburg at the convenience of the family.

The family will receive friends Saturday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Liver Foundation, 1425 Pompton Ave., Cedar Grove, NJ 07009; or American Cancer Society, 1037 Haven Road, Hagerstown, MD 21742.
