MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Julia E. Gilbert, 78, of Martinsburg, died Sunday, May 2, 1999, at Care Haven of Berkeley.
Born April 3, 1921, in Patrick County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Andrew Jackson and Curtis Irene Bowman Young.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lance Gilbert.
She was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by two daughters, Pauline Miller and Janie Meredith, both of Baltimore; two sons, Harvey Young of Martinsburg and John Richard Meredith of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two sisters, Hattie McBride of Mt. Airy, N.C., and Ruth Lawson of King, N.C.; one brother, Fred Young of Stephens, Neb.; ten grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Nannie Niten, and three brothers, Monroe Young, Kyle Young and Sidney Young.
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.
Warner L. Hollida
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Warner Lee Hollida, 88, of Martinsburg, died Friday, April 30, 1999, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg.
Born Feb. 16, 1911, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Lester Coe and Mary E. Miller Hollida.
He was a 1929 graduate of Martinsburg High School and was involved with alumni affairs.
From the age of 10 he was in the newspaper business as a Journal carrier, later managing the Berkeley News Agency. He was an agent for the Baltimore Sun and other newspapers and for a number of years. He and his wife operated a news stand on West Burke Street. Leaving the newspaper field, he was employed by E. I. DuPont Company for more than 22 years, retiring in 1976.
A T/4 Sgt. during World War II, he served in the U.S. Army from September 1943 until February 1946 with the 16th Armored Division and 1st Guided Missle Battalion as chief mail clerk.
He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church for more than 60 years.
He was a master mason of Equality Lodge No. 44, AF & AM; Tall Cedars of Lebanon; Shenandoah Forest No. 150; Lebanon Chapter No. 2; R.A.M.; Berkeley Post No. 14, American Legion; Henry Kyd Douglas Camp Sons of Confederate Veterans; General Adam Stephen Chapter; Sons of American Revolution; American Association of Retired Persons; and a former member of Shepherdstown's Mens Club.
He is survived by his wife, Mona Moler Hollida, whom he married in 1939; a son, Jerry Lee Hollida of Jupiter, Fla.; a grandson; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Anna Hollida VanMetre; and a brother, Morhed C. Hollida Sr.
Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church. The Rev. James D. Riley Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery with Masonic graveside services by Equality Lodge No. 44, AF & AM.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg.

Albert J. Sturba
BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Albert J. Sturba, 69, of Berkeley Springs, died Friday, April 30, 1999, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born Dec. 12, 1929, in Morgantown, W.Va., he was the son of the late Tony and Caroline Speeney Sturba.
He had been a wallpaper hanger.
He served in the U.S. Army.
He was a member of American Legion Post No. 226, Mayo, Md.
He is survived by his wife, Sheila N. Sturba; three daughters, Nora McCoy of Edgewater, Md., Tina M. Hahn of Bowie, Md. and Sheila J. Bittner of Berkeley Springs; four sons, James A. Sturba of Columbus, Ga., Randy Sturba of Bowie, Md., Edward Sturba and David P. Bittner, both of Berkeley Springs; two sisters, Carmello Raposo of Bowie and Anna Witthaus of Severna Park, Md.; a brother, Ranie Sturba of Berkeley Springs; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Consettia Messenger; and a brother, Guilo Sturba.
Memorial services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs. The Rev. John Ledford will officiate.
Burial will be held at the convenience of the family.
Charles W. Hoffmaster
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Charles W. "Johnny" Hoffmaster, 66, of Martinsburg, died Saturday, May 1, 1999, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg.
Born Feb. 25, 1933, in Pleasantville, Md., he was the son of the late George F. Hoffmaster and Leoda Sweeney Hoffmaster Abott.
He was retired, having been the owner and operator of Berkeley Water Conditioning.
He was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy.
He is survived by three daughters, Debbie Hammond of Inwood, W.Va., Sherry Peck of Shepherdstown, W.Va. and Cathy Nimphius of Martinsburg; two sons, Darin Sweeney of Brunswick, Md. and John Hoffmaster, Hedgesville, W.Va.; two sisters, Essie A. Moler of Knoxville, Md. and Audrey P. Conner of Charlottesville, Va.; two brothers, Maurice F. Hoffmaster of Jefferson, Md. and Karl A. Hoffmaster of Knoxville; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, George T. Hoffmaster and Raymond E. Hoffmaster.
Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. Harold O. Snyder will officiate. Burial will be in Brownsville Church of the Brethren Cemetery, Brownsville, Md.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Anton J. Von Wald
CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Anton Joseph "Zipper" Von Wald, 54, of Charles Town, died Thursday, April 29, 1999, at his home.
Born Oct. 22, 1944, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of Elsie Plass Von Wald of Hillcrest Heights, Md., and the late Walter Von Wald.
He was a graduate of Suitland (Md.) High School.
He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service Center in Falling Waters, W.Va., for 12 years.
He retired after 24 years with the U.S. Navy. He served during the Vietnam War and received the 5th Good Conduct Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy Unit Commendation (two awards), Air Medal, Navy Expeditionary Medal, Vietnamese Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal.
He was a Catholic.
He was a member of VFW Post 9170 and American Legion Post 0274, both in Beeville, Texas; AMVETS Post 0010, and Navy Fleet Reserve Association in Suitland, Md.; and Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 120 in Martinsburg, W.Va.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 16 years, Elizabeth J. "Tish" Pal Von Wald; a daughter, Ilse Di Angelis of Jonestown, Pa.; a son, Michael Von Wald of Redmond, Wash.; two sisters, Christine Castner of Rockville, Md., and Katherine Niederhelman of Germantown, Md.; a brother, Steven Von Wald of Gaithersburg, Md.; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Walter J. Von Wald, Daniel Von Wald, Mark Von Wald and Eric Von Wald.
Services will be held Thursday, May 6, at 2:45 p.m. in Fort Myer Chapel of Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. The Catholic chaplain will officiate.
Friends will be received at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home in Charles Town from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Stacey J. Swink
BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Stacey Jean Swink, 23, of Berkeley Springs, died Thursday, April 29, 1999, at Morgan County War Memorial Hospital, Berkeley Springs.
Born June 6, 1975, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of Samuel Jefferson "Jeff" Swink II and Sandra Jean Cross Swink of Berkeley Springs.
She was a 1993 graduate of Berkeley Springs High School.
She worked as a credit card fraud investigator with First Data in Hagerstown.
She was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hancock.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by a son, Derrick Austin Swink at home; a sister, Jennifer Lavonne Swink of Berkeley Springs; paternal grandmother, Ilene Marie Stotler Swink of Berkeley Springs; maternal grandparents, Timothy and Donna Jean Neely Faith, and Donald Clarence and Peggy Joan Cross, all of Berkeley Springs; and aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Samuel Jefferson Swink, in 1990.
Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs, and will conclude at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3738 Resley Road, Hancock. Pastor Timothy P. Davis will officiate. Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery.
The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will open today at 10 a.m.
