MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Patty J. Kief, 69, of Martinsburg, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Nov. 17, 1929, in Morgan County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Rev. Benjamin and Emma Armentrout Spitzer.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Richardson Kief Sr.
She was a 1948 graduate of Berkeley Springs High School.
She retired from the state of West Virginia as a cook for the Martinsburg Detention Center.
She was a member of Salem United Methodist Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Patsy Lea Kief and Karen Jo Thompson, both of Martinsburg; a son, Eugene Richardson Kief Jr. of Reno, Nev.; a sister, Mary Cushwa of Martinsburg; five brothers, Bobby Spitzer and Bill Spitzer, both of Berkeley Springs, Danny Spitzer of Martinsburg, Sam Spitzer of Pennsville, N.J., and Max Spitzer of Mathias, W.Va.; four grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; eight stepgreat-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Dixie Warner and Leora Spitzer; and six brothers, Homer Spitzer, John Spitzer, Kingsley Spitzer, Roy Spitzer, Ben Spitzer and Marshall Spitzer.
Services will be Sunday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. John R. Yost will officiate. Burial will be in Tuscarora cemetery.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Marie M. Shade
INWOOD, W.Va. - Marie May Shade, 84, of Inwood, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, Frederick, Md.
Born July 20, 1914, in Darkesville, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Samuel Harrison "Harry" and Ida Bell Bennett May.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Earl Shade.
She was a graduate of Bunker Hill High School in Bunker Hill, W.Va.; and Martinsburg Business College in Martinsburg, W.Va.
She was retired from Veterans Administration Center in Martinsburg.
She attended Cedar Grove Christian Church and Darkesville United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a brother, Lester H. May of Darkesville; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Carolyn Shade Foley; two sons, Victor Martin and Winston Earl Shade; two sisters, Lottie Keiscome and Edith E. Stewart; and a brother, Roy R. May.
Services will be Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Revs. Khrista Ferguson and Louis Barrett will officiate. Burial will be in Gerrardstown (W.Va.) Presbyterian cemetery.
The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Douglas E. Roper
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Douglas Edward "Dougie" Roper, 42, of Martinsburg, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.
Born June 30, 1956, in Charles Town, W.Va., he was the son of James Edward Roper of Kearneysville, W.Va., and Lois Ann Cole Roper of Warren, Ohio.
He attended Shepherdstown (W.Va.) High School.
He was a construction worker.
He was a Baptist.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a son, Demorris Roper of Kearneysville; a sister, Michelle Willis of Berryville, Va.; two brothers, Stephon V. Winston of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Scottie Payton of Charles Town; aunts; uncles; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town. The Rev. Alex Lambert will officiate. Burial will be in St. Paul's Baptist Church cemetery, Kearneysville.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
The immediate family will meet Monday at noon at 709 New York Ave., Martinsburg.
Lloyd E. Houpt
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - The Rev. Lloyd E. Houpt, 73, of Martinsburg, died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg.
Born Sept. 30, 1925, in Mercersburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Charles Raleigh and Cora Straley Houpt.
He was associated with the Rev. Raymond E. Jones at Full Gospel Pentecostal Church at Four Mile Woods.
A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his wife, Delores Fauver Houpt; a daughter, Deborah Houpt of Martinsburg; a son, Lloyd E. McCauley of Rochester, N.Y.; a stepson, Charles E. Bell of Catonsville, Md.; two brothers, James William Houpt of Greencastle, Pa., and Harry Wilson Houpt of Martinsburg; and 20 grandchildren.
Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Full Gospel Pentecostal Church at Four Mile Woods. The Rev. Raymond E. Jones will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery.

Anna D. Shade
BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Anna D. Shade, 96, of Berkeley Springs, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999, at Valley View Nursing Home in Berkeley Springs.
Born Feb. 27, 1902, in Morgan County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late William Frederick and Mary Louella Michael Eppinger.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jannie G. Shade, in 1974.
She attended Waterview School in Morgan County, W.Va.
She worked with A.C. Unger and Jim Unger Tomato Canning Factories during the 1930s and early 1940s. She was a cook at Park View Inn and later at Fairfax Restaurant, both in Berkeley Springs. She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Highland United Methodist Church, Morgan County, and was active with Women's Society of Christian Service.
She was on the Morgan County Democratic Committee.
She is survived by three daughters, Lee Anna McCoy, Betty L. Bohrer and Phyllis J. Michael, all of Berkeley Springs; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two children, Frederick Clinton Shade and Bonnie G. Tyler; a brother, William G. Eppinger; and a grandson.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs. The Rev. Henry L. Fisher will officiate. Burial will be in Greenway cemetery, Berkeley Springs.
The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, which will be open from 9 a.m.
