CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Maxine Lorraine Boyer, 76, of Charles Town, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital, Ranson, W.Va.
Born April 24, 1922, in Bridgeport, Neb., she was the daughter of the late Maxwell Carl and Edith E. Nelson Jensen.
She was a 1941 graduate of University of Nebraska, receiving a bachelor of science in nursing. She had additional nursing training at Emmanuel Hospital, Omaha, Neb.
She was a retired registered nurse, having been a Jefferson County Public Health Nurse in the school system. Previously, she was with St. Lukes Hospital, Kansas City, Mo. in pediatrics; also Santa Fe Railroad as a courier nurse; Denver Gerneral Hospital Emergency Room; and the Laradon Hall for Retardation in Denver.
She served with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. She was a U.S. Air Force Nurse at Warren Air Force Base, Cheyenne, Wyo.; and in Alaska as a flight nurse. She was the first woman qualified as a passenger in the F-89 Sabre Jet.
She was a member of Oakland United Methodist Church, Charles Town.
She was a member of Kabletown Home Extension Club; and did volunteer work with Jefferson County Red Cross Blood Mobile; and Old Opera Op Shop, Charles Town.
She is survived by two sons, Donald C. Boyer and James A. Boyer, both of Charles Town; a sister, Carolyn M. Glaar of Golden, Colo.; a grandchild; a niece; two nephews; and a close friend, Lucy Milton of Charles Town.
Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Oakland United Methodist Church, 26 Oakland Terrace, Charles Town. The Rev. Joanne Alexander and the Rev. Kent Tice will officiate. Burial will be in Oregon Trail cemetery, Bridgeport, Neb.
There will be no visitation.

Esther W. Rannells
FALLING WATERS, W.Va. - Esther Williams "Peggy" Rannells, 84, of Falling Waters, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, at City Hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born July 16, 1914, in Marlowe, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late William Porterfield and Anna May Jacques Jack.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James O. Rannells, in 1979.
She was employed by Interwoven Mills in Martinsburg, until her retirement. She previously worked for Fairchild Aircraft.
She was a member of Harmony United Methodist Church, Marlowe.
She is survived by nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Beulah Price and Ruth Sanders.
Graveside services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Harmony cemetery, Falling Waters. The Rev. Ray Roberson will officiate.
There will be no viewing.

Lena E. McIntire
BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Lena Ellen McIntire, 103, of Berkeley Springs, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, at Welcome Haven Home in Winchester, Va.
Born May 10, 1895, in Morgan County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Thomas P. and Martha Ann Linaweaver Hovermale.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John C. McIntire, in 1981.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Berkeley Springs, and was a Sunday school teacher and choir member.
She is survived by a daughter, Charlotte Marlow of Martinsburg, W.Va.; a son, P. Victor McIntire of Winchester, Va.; three grandchildren, Stephen McIntire, Linda Grubb and Sue Marlow, all of Martinsburg; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Frances Barnes, Geneva Harden and Catherine Stuckey; and four brothers, Ulsie P. Hovermale, James "Pent" Hovermale, William H. Hovermale and Emmett J. Hovermale.
Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs. The Rev. Owen Womack will officiate. Burial will be in Greenway cemetery, Berkeley Springs.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, 106 S. Mercer St., Berkeley Springs.

Mary F. Hough
MIDDLEWAY, W.Va. - Mary Frances Hough, 78, of Middleway, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, at Rose Hill Nursing Home in Berryville, Va.
Born May 10, 1920, in Luray, Va., she was the daughter of the late Clyde Gilbert and Helen Martha Miller Seal.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Franklin Hough, in 1982.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of St. James Catholic Church, Charles Town, W.Va.
She is survived by one daughter, Frances Lee Dunn of Charles Town; two sons, George Franklin Hough and William Lester Hough, both of Kearneysville, W.Va.; three brothers, Henry Seal of Tampa, Fla., Joseph Seal of Kearneysville, and Jacob Seal of Charles Town; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Ruth Seal; and two brothers, Edward Seal and Nelson Seal.
A funeral liturgy will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church, Charles Town. The Rev. Brian Owens will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill cemetery, Charles Town.
The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town, with a wake service at 8 p.m.

Thelma Smith
CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Thelma Smith, 84, of Charles Town, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson, W.Va.
Born Aug. 19, 1914, in Rodeo, N.M., she was the daughter of the late Hayes and Emmaline Smith Shemp.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Albert Smith, in 1975.
She formerly owned thoroughbred race horses at Charles Town Races.
She was of the Baptist faith.
She was a former member of Charles Town HBPA.
She is survived by three daughters, Joan Williams of El Cajon, Calif., Betty J. Stehr of Charles Town and Marilyn Cross of Blythe, Calif.; a brother, Raymond Shemp of Beatty, Nev.; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by four sisters, Jessie Hogue, Hazel Crapo, Flora Taylor and Ruth Higgins.
Graveside services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Edge Hill cemetery, Charles Town. The Rev. Joanne Alexander will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill cemetery.

Mildred L. Norman
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Mildred Lee Norman, 68, of Martinsburg, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, at Winchester Medical Center.
Born July 21, 1930, in Williamsport, she was the daughter of the late Eli and Minnie B. Shank Gaylor.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Tyrus G. Norman.
She retired as a sales associate from Lowe's.
She is survived by three daughters, Donna M. Clipp of Falling Waters, W.Va., Kristi K. Norman and Jullie A. Caniford, both of Martinsburg; a son, Kevin Kent Norman of Martinsburg; three sisters, Mary Brandenburg and Lena Mae Gaylor, both of Hagerstown, and P. Virginia Jordan of Williamsport; two brothers, Albert M. Gaylor and Clyde M. Gaylor, both of Williamsport; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a son, Keith Dana Norman; three sisters, and a brother.
Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. Daniel Jordan will officiate. Burial will be in Manor Church of the Brethren cemetery, Fairplay.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
