Milton C. Hughes

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Milton Culay Hughes, 86, of Shepherdstown, died Sunday, March 21, 1999, at The Heartland of Martinsburg.

He was the son of the late Travis and Louise Green Hughes.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Homezella Bevon McCann Hughes.

He had been employed by American Mariette Limestone Quarry as a high grader operator. He was a farmer for Dr. O.C. Stein.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He attended St. John the Baptist Church.

He is survived by one son, Thomas R. Creamer of Martinsburg; two sisters, Cora McDonald of Shepherdstown, and Lena Burrell of New Kensington, Pa.; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by five sisters, Bessie Brown, Anita Rogers, Ortellia Jackson, Roberta Branson, and Signora Brooks; five brothers, Hubert Hughes, Sherman Hughes, Travis Hughes, Sylvester Hughes, and Howard Hughes.

Services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Rosedale Funeral Chapel. The Revs. Robert Craig, and Joe Liles, and Elder Marva Harris will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mary Jo French

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Mary Jo French, 56, of Martinsburg, died Sunday, March 21, 1999, at her home.

Born Oct. 21, 1942, in Martinsburg, she was the daughter of the late Boyd T. and Rose Theresa Koontz French.

She was a 1962 graduate of St. Joseph Catholic High School

She was retired from the IRS after 25 years.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

She was a member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas, and held local offices including Grand Regent of Court, and was state treasurer.

She is survived by three sisters, Dorothy Anthony of Martinsburg; Margaret Richardson of Boonsboro, and Madeline Davis, with whom she resided for 24 years; three brothers, E. Theodore French of Lodi, N.J., Roger W. French of New Carrollton, Md., and J. Vincent French of Kalona, Iowa; and nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church. The Rev. John V. DiBacco Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg. A Vigil Service will be held at 7:30 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph Catholic School, 233 S. Queen St., Martinsburg, WV 25401; or Hospice of the Panhandle, 2015 Boyd Orchard Court, Martinsburg, WV 25401.

Melda V. Duckworth

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Melda Violet Duckworth, 77, of Hedgesville, died Tuesday, March 23, 1999, at her home.

Born March 13, 1922, in Moore, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Lorenzo Dow and Sarah Elizabeth Harper Knapp.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James F. Duckworth Jr, in 1980.

She was a 1940 graduate of Parsons High School, Parsons, W.Va.

She did clerical work at Montgomery Ward in Baltimore. She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Cherry Run (W.Va.) United Methodist Church.

She was a member of AARP; and Order of the Eastern Star, Walter Chapter 43, Davis, W.Va.

She is survived by two daughters, Sandra G. Ziler of Hedgesville and Mary F. Geiger of Burtonsville, Md.; two sons, James F. Duckworth III of Hedgesville and Milton D. Duckworth of Seven Valleys, Pa.; a sister, Mary B. Hoskins of Alexandria, Va.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by four sisters, Leota Whitehair, Lura M. Bell, Estee Knapp and Elsie Knapp; and two brothers, Robert A. Knapp and Ralph N. Knapp.

Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Cherry Run United Methodist Church, Cherry Run, W.Va. The Rev. Daniel L. Wright will officiate. Burial will be in Culpeper National cemetery, Culpeper, Va.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the church and Thursday at 1 p.m.

Ralph F. Buddenhagen

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Ralph Franklin Buddenhagen, 95, of Charles Town, died Monday, March 22, 1999, at City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born July 13, 1903, in Charles Town, he was the son of the late Joseph F. and Irene Fidinger Buddenhagen.

He had been employed by the B&O Railroad; painted houses; and delivered ice in Charles Town.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church.

He is survived by nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret Ahalt, Mabel B. Johnston and Dorothy Conert; and two brothers, his twin, Robert Henry Buddenhagen Sr. and Joseph Buddenhagen.

Services will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town. The Rev. James Chambly will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill cemetery, Charles Town.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Family Council at Care Haven of Berkeley, Route 5, Box A-167, Martinsburg, WV 25401.

Loretta L. Penwell

HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. - Loretta Lynn Hill Penwell, 52, of Harpers Ferry, died Tuesday, March 23, 1999, at her home.

Born Feb. 14, 1947, in McComb, Miss., she was the daughter of the late Grayson William and Anna Lee Carlisle Hill.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Charles Town Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Elmer Leon Penwell Jr.; two daughters, Jeri Lynn Howell of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Kimberly Ann Barajas of Cape Coral, Fla.; two sons, Jeffery Scott Boyd of Shepherdstown, W.Va., and Timothy Neal Penwell Jr., at home; four sisters, Judith Ann Slusher of Harpers Ferry, Susan Irene Alger of Ranson, W.Va., Nancy Gayle Weakland of Longmont, Colo., and Debra Kaye Stottlemyer of Charles Town; and two brothers, Gregory William Hill of Martinsburg, and Terry Lee Hill of Ranson.

Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home in Ranson. The Rev. Bruce Singhas will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill cemetery, Charles Town.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Panhandle, 2015 Boyd Orchard Court, Martinsburg, WV 25401.
