George G. Hess Jr.

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - George G. Hess Jr., 63, of Martinsburg, died Thursday, March 18, 1999, at City Hospital, Martinsburg.

Born Oct. 6, 1935, in Martinsburg, he was the son of the late George G. and Virginia Newton Hess Sr.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel V. Jacques Hess.

He retried from Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg.

He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.

He was a member of First Baptist Church.

He was a member of Martinsburg Lodge 120; Loyal Order of Moose; and Newton D. Baker Post 896 VFW.

He is survived by four daughters, Barbara Ann Whalen and Sandra Kay Hess, both of Martinsburg, Virginia Lee Spencer of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Pamela Lynn Hess of Harrisonburg, Va.; three sons, Roger Wayne Hess of Baltimore, David Lee Hess of Seattle and Michael Wayne Hess of Martinsburg; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Deborah K. Hess; a son, George G. Hess III; and a sister, Peggy Bolyard.

Services will be Monday at 2:30 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. Edward E. Rogers will officiate. Burial will be in Tuscarora cemetery with military graveside services.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Robert J. Truax

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Robert John Truax, 64, of Berkeley Springs, died Sunday, March 21, 1999, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born March 19, 1935, in Chambersburg, Pa., he was the son of Geraldine Elizabeth Keller Truax Lawrence of Berkeley Springs, and the late Clyde William Truax.

He attended Hancock High School, Hancock.

A real estate developer and builder, he owned and operated Truax Contracting in Berkeley Springs.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He was a Protestant.

He was a member of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1483, Berkeley Springs; and Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 824, Winchester, Va.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 27 years, Diane Marie Householder Truax; five daughters, Christy Emerick, Lisa Truax-Mason and Robin Truax, all of Berkeley Springs, Jeanne Truax of Martinsburg, and Kathleen Custer-Rusinko of Newfield, N.J.; two brothers, Clarence Truax of Stanley, Va., and Lewis Truax of Hancock; two grandsons, and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Carl Junior Truax.

Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs. The Rev. Hennis H. Fox will officiate. Burial will be in Spohrs Crossroads cemetery, Berkeley Springs.

The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, whichwill be open from 9:30 a.m.

Donald C. Kyne Sr.

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Donald Clifford "Pete" Kyne Sr., 68, of Berkeley Springs, died Sunday, March 21, 1999, at his home.

He attended public schools in Hedgesville, W.Va.

He worked for U.S. Silica, Berkeley Springs, as a mechanic, crusher operator, working foreman and "Euc" driver, retiring in 1995 after 34 years.

He served in the U.S. Navy.

He was a Christian.

He was a member of AARP; and Alderton-Dawson American Legion Post 60, and Junior Order of United American Mechanics Council 117, both of Berkeley Springs.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Peggy Joan Sheppard Kyne; two daughters, Marcia Gay Farwell of Winchester, Va., and Melissa Joan Payne of Berkeley Springs; two sons, Donald Clifford Kyne Jr. and Michael Steven Kyne, both of Berkeley Springs; one sister, Alice Elizabeth Cain of Berkeley Springs; three grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, eight stepgreat-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Doris Marie Beard; and infant twin brothers.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs. The Rev. Gary Kerns will officiate. Burial will be in Greenway cemetery, Berkeley Springs, with military honors by Tri-State Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, with a Junior Order Memorial Service at 7:30 p.m. The funeral home will be open Wednesday from 9 a.m.

Lloyd S. Powell

FALLING WATERS, W.Va. - Lloyd Stevenson "Steve" Powell, 51, of 2002 Windy Ridge Road, Falling Waters, died Sunday, March 21, 1999, at his home.

Born Feb. 20, 1948, in Cumberland, Md., he was the son of Pauline Jenneva McKenzie Powell of Falling Waters, and the late David Henry Powell.

He was a graduate of Shepherd College.

He was employed by the Washington County Board of Education as a teacher for 28 years.

He was a member of Crossroads Community Church, Falling Waters.

He was a member of Washington County Teacher's Association and active with the Berkeley County Youth Fair Board.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Bonnie L. Powell; one son, Chad A. Powell, at home; and one brother, David Lee Powell of Frostburg, Md.

Services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Everett W. Powell will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Panhandle, 2015 Boyd Orchard Court, Martinsburg, WV 25401.

Anna L. Howell

RANSON, W.Va. - Anna Louise Howell, 80, of 214 E. 4th St., Ranson, died Sunday, March 21, 1999, at her son's home in Ranson.

Born March 19, 1919, in Jefferson County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Thomas B. and Elizabeth Viands Longerbeam.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond J. Howell, in 1964.

She was a member of Halltown (W.Va.) Church of God.

She is survived by four daughters, Dorothy Grove and Anna Grove, both of Silver Grove, W.Va., Joyce Weston of Landover, Md., and Linda Pierson of Harpers Ferry, W.Va.; three sons, Thomas Howell of Ranson, Raymond Howell of Warrenton, Va., and Terry Howell of Brunswick, Md.; two sisters, Genevive Grove of Silver Grove, and Peg Nick of Ranson; three brothers, Thomas Longerbeam of Charles Town, W.Va., Elzy Longerbeam and Robert Longerbeam, both of Harpers Ferry; 35 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Beulah Pierson and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Halltown Church of God. The Rev. Ollie Baer will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill cemetery, Charles Town.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Eackles-Spencer Funeral Home, 970 Washington St., Harpers Ferry.

Leon D. Jenkins

RANSON, W.Va. - Leon Donald Jenkins, 76, of Ranson, died Monday, March 22, 1999, at Winchester (Va.) Medical Center.

Born May 23, 1922, in Jefferson County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Robert Paul and Betsy L. McGorlick Jenkins.

He retired after 38 years with Martin-Marietta in Martinsburg, W.Va. He previously owned and operated Jenkins Sanitation Service, Charles Town, W.Va., and was self-employed in the construction business in Jefferson County.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by his former wife, Leona V. Marlin of Charles Town; two daughters, Shirley Jean Finkbeiner of Newell, W.Va., and Beverly Mae Whitmore of Ranson; five sons, Donald Leon Jenkins and Kenneth Lee Jenkins, both of Charles Town, Gerald Richard Jenkins of California, Michael David Jenkins of Shenandoah Junction, W.Va., and Dennis Wayne Jenkins of Kearneysville, W.Va.; 17 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and five brothers.

Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Charles Town. The Rev. John Divico will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill cemetery, Charles Town.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Southern Chapter Alzheimers, 400 Allen Drive, Charleston, WV 25302.
