James Leo Judge (1925-2011)

James Leo Judge, age 85 of Davenport, formerly of Melrose died on Saturday evening, July 2, 2011, at St. Mary's in Davenport. He was born icon to Peter and Hanna (Hannam) Judge on Nov. 22, 1925 in Melrose.

James graduated high school in Melrose. He then was enlisted with the United States Army during World War II. He married icon Ethel Thrasher in 1957 in Dallas, Texas. He was a mechanic by trade at Alcoa on heavy equipment. James always enjoyed working on cars.

Survivors include his wife, Ethel; daughter, Trina (Roger) Krueger of Aurora, Ill.; sisters, Irene Bellesky of Silver Springs, Md., and Maria Butler of Dallas, Texas; brother, John (Bernadine) Judge of Urbandale; two granddaughters; and two great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents. An open visitation will family present will be on Thursday, July 7, 2011 from 12 noon-2 p.m. at the Sinnott Pierschbacher Funeral Home in Albia. Family graveside services will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Melrose.

Arlene Sinclair Stewart (1931-2011)

Arlene Sinclair Stewart, age 80, passed away on Nov. 3, 2011. She was living in Jackson Hole, Wyo., at the time of her death.

Mary Arlene was born icon on April 1, 1931, to Earl and Nellie Miller Sinclair in the home of her Uncle Lewis Miller in Albia. She started attending Maxon Country School at the age of four and graduated from Albia High School in 1948. She met her future husband, Glen Stewart, in high school and they married icon on St. Patrick's Day in 1951. Together they owned a gas station and motel in Albia until 1961, when they moved to Bozeman, Mont. Arlene was an accomplished bookkeeper and worked until retiring in 1982.

Despite suffering with rheumatoid arthritis for 31 years, Arlene never let the disease limit her. She loved water aerobics and working out at Curves, attaining 1,430 workouts before moving to Jackson Hole to live with her daughter, Julie. She also enjoyed years of knitting, crocheting, needlework, ceramics, making Origami cards, gardening and traveling. Arlene was a member of Grand Avenue Christian Church and delighted in singing in the choir.

Arlene was a very active member of the Order of Eastern Star in both Bozeman and Jackson Hole. She was so proud to serve as Lily of the Valley #4 Chapter Secretary for 16 years, Grand Representative of Connecticut in Montana, Grand Chaplain of Montana, and currently as Worthy Matron of Jackson Hole Chapter #50. Arlene believed in our youth and was a dedicated leader of Bozeman Rainbow Assembly #21 as a longtime member of the Advisory Board and two terms as Mother Advisor. Arlene is survived by her daughter, Julie Birrer (Kraig Kobert) of Jackson Hole; grandson Dr. Bret Birrer of Gillette, Wyo.; grandson Bryan Birrer of Boise, Idaho; and grandson Glen Stewart (wife Charlotte and daughter Sheila Stewart) of Virginia Beach, Va.; sister Lucille Rardin of Dallas, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Malcom (Pat) and Malvin (Mike), daughter-in-law Sheila Stewart, granddaughter Kristi Stewart, son Scott Stewart, and husband Glen Stewart. Her memorial service will be held at 1:30 pm on December 10, 2011, at the Dahl Funeral Chapel. Memorials to honor her can be made to the Arlene Stewart Memorial Rainbow Scholarship, in care of Nancy Hopkins, 911 Woodland Drive, Bozeman, Mont. 59718. Our Irish Lassie is now with her Lord and family, free of pain.

Phyllis Henderson (1927-2011)

Phyllis Marie Henderson, age 84 of Albia, died Monday, Nov. 28, 2011 at Monroe County Hospital in Albia.

Phyllis was born icon July 9, 1927 to Joseph and Frances (Molloy) McGinn in Weller. She married icon Ernest "Ernie" Henderson on June 15, 1946 in St. Mary's Church in Weller. They shared 63 years together before his passing on June 18, 2009.

Phyllis graduated from Lovilia High School, class of 1945. Aside from being a homemaker, she worked at Chamberlain's Manufacturing for 10 years, was in charge of housekeeping at Indian Hills Inn and White Buffalo for 20 years, and then Mom's Place, all in Albia. Phyllis enjoyed playing cards, especially euchre. She liked watching sports, going to her grandkid's sporting events, Little League baseball games, and also following Notre Dame. She liked the outdoors, going for rides in the car, and spending time on her front porch with family and friends.

Phyllis is survived by four daughters, Rita Henderson of Altoona, DeDe Paris of Altoona, Jackie (Troy) Underwood of Albia, and Peggy (Pat) Graham of Albia; a son, Edward (Dianne) Henderson of Clive; nine grandchildren, Susan and Beth Henderson, Kelli and Kari Paris, Bryan, Adam, and Andy Stephens, and Tommy Joe and Austin O'Leary; six step-grandchildren, Tyler, Cody, and Kyle Underwood, and Bruce, Dustin, and Alicia Graham; a great-grandchild, Dacs; and four step-great grandchildren, Grant, Hannah, Breanne, and Ella.

Phyllis is also survived by four brothers, Joe, Jim, and Dick McGinn, and John Molloy; and two sisters, Barbara Chiafos and Dee Rosenbaum. Phyllis was preceded in death by husband, Ernie; parents, Joseph and Frances; a son, Tommy Joe; an infant daughter; and a sister, Betty Ann Unger. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, Dec. 2, 2011, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Albia, with Father Michael E. Volkmer, C.PP.S. officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Weller. Visitation began at 1 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 1, 2011 at Tharp-Winfield Funeral Home in Albia, with the family present from 6-8 p.m. A rosary was led by St. Mary's Altar and Rosary Society at 4 p.m. There will also be a Christian Wake Service led by Father Volkmer at 7 p.m. Thursday evening.

Brandon Lynn Garrels (1982-2011)

Brandon Garrels, age 29 of Albia, died Friday, Aug. 19, 2011, at his residence in rural Monroe County after a long battle with cancer.

Brandon was born icon on March 28, 1982, in Ottumwa, to Ronald Garrels and Julie Ann Merrill. He graduated from Davis County High School, class of 2001.

Brandon was a member of the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed being outdoors, shooting, and riding four wheelers. Brandon loved to eat and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Brandon is survived by his parents, Julie Ann Merrill of Albia and Ronald (Susanne) Garrels of Farson; a half-brother, Cory; two half-sisters, Tabitha and Mackeanzie; a grandmother, Beverly Garrels of Ottumwa; and a great-grandmother, Maxine Merrill of Albia. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Brandon was preceded in death by his grandparents, Larry R. Merrill, Janice K. Merrill, and Clarence V. Garrels. He was also preceded in death by his great-grandfather, Roy Merrill. Brandon was cremated and due to his wishes no visitation is planned. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 27, 2011, at 11 a.m.,. at the Merrill family farm with Pastor Don Kilchner officiating. A memorial has been established to Hospice of Monroe County.

Joe Marion Williams (1927-2011)

Joe Marion Williams, age 83, of Bussey, passed away Monday, June 27, 2011, at Oskaloosa Care Center in Oskaloosa.

Joe was born icon Sept. 15, 1927 near Eddyville, to Bryan Jennings and Lille Mae (Clair) Williams. He grew up and went to school in the Eddyville area. Joe drove a truck for John Hughes. He married icon JoHanna Marie Schippers of Buxton on Sept. 6, 1947 in Chariton. To this union, four children were born, Marty, Lillian, Mary Jo, and Brad.

Joe drove a rural milk truck, farmed, and eventually went to work at Maloney's Door Factory in Albia (later known as Chamberlain's).

After Chamberlain's closed, Joe drove a truck for Robert Rozenboom, Allen's, and Marvin Duckworth. In January 1970, at the age of 43, Joe obtained his GED, which was a great accomplishment for him. He was very proud of finishing his education. Joe and JoHanna belonged to the Monroe County Saddle Club for years. Joe had a passion for his horses; he shoed many horses for himself and others. He enjoyed going to the Old Threshers in Mount Pleasant. He had a collection of Allis Chalmers tractors. Joe loved going to tractor pulls and helped to put together several pulls in Bussey. Joe and JoHanna also enjoyed square dancing. Joe is survived by his wife, JoHanna; his children, Marty (Paulette) Williams of Tracy, Lillian Dolentz of Minnetonka, Minn., Mary Jo Grimes (Tim Selby) of Bussey, and Brad (Pam) Williams of Bussey; 13 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren. Joe is also survived by a brother, Irvin Williams of Moravia; two sisters, Ida Current of Ottumwa and Ann Post of Albia He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ed and Kenneth; a grandson, Christopher; good friends, Case and Mike Keegel; and many relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m., Friday, July 1, 2011 at Union Liberty Church in rural Bussey with Rev. Paul Hughes and Marty Williams co-officiating.

Burial will be in Pringle Cemetery in rural Bussey. Visitation began at 11 a.m., Thursday, June 30, 2011, at Tharp-Winfield Funeral Home in Albia with Joe's family present from 6-8 p.m. Memorials have been established to the family and Hospice of Central Iowa.

Harold (Buck) Brink Sr. (1942-2011)

Harold Emery (Buck) Brink Sr., age 69, of Albia, died Saturday, Aug. 6, 2011, at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Buck was born icon in DeKalb, Ill., on Jan. 19, 1942 to Charles H. and Buelah Rose "Bootts" (Atkins) Brink. He married icon Kathryn Diane Nicoletto on Aug. 2, 1982 at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Albia.

He graduated from high school in Illinois and after high school he was a certified welder and volunteer policeman in Illinois. He moved to Albia and worked for Chamberlain Manufacturing, later Clow Manufacturing, and Cargill Meat Solutions. Buck retired in 2002.

He was a member of the Eagles Club #3583 of Albia and enjoyed fishing, bingo, going to the casinos, and especially his grandchildren. Buck is survived by his wife Kathy Brink of Albia; five children William Brink and Janie of Moline, Ill., Dora and Brad Bugen of Coal Valley, Ill., Toyna and Richard Fraust of Rock Island, Ill., Harold and Jennie Brink Jr., of Fremont, and Mindy Brink and Pete Conn of Avery; 18 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Buck was preceded in death by his parents; step father Edward Petty; and half brother Michael Petty. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m.,, Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011, at the Tharp-Winfield Funeral Home with Rev. Neil Montz officiating. Visitation for Harold will be held also on Wednesday from 9 a.m., until service time with the family present. A memorial has been established to the family.

Vercil “Clair” Caudill (1919-2011)

Clair Caudill, age 91, of Albia, passed away Monday, Aug. 8, 2011, at the Monroe County Hospital in Albia.

Clair was born icon Nov. 8, 1919 to Daniel Quincy and Levada (Moyle) Caudill in Lockman. He attended and graduated from Albia High School, class of 1938. After high school, Clair served his country in the U.S. Army for four years during World War II. He married icon Catherine Sereg in Albia on March 8, 1947 at St. Mary's Catholic Church. They shared 64 years of marriage.

Clair worked for several auto body shops before operating Caudill Body Shop in Albia and retiring as a body man. He was a member of the American Legion Howard Cessna Post #136, St. Mary's Catholic Church, Albia City Council, and was a 4-H Automotive Leader. He enjoyed being outdoors, particularly hunting. He never met a stranger, was very talented fixing things and was always willing to help others. He helped deliver Meals on Wheels, was a great shot with a sling shot, and family time was very important to him, especially time with the kids. Clair is survived by his wife, Catherine Caudill of Albia; his children and grandchildren, Susan (Patrick) McDonnell and their children, Jason and Sara of Charles City; Dean (Madonna) Caudill and their children, Tami, Scott, Missy, Jeff, and Lisa; Chris Caudill and his children, Edwin and Clara of Albia; Bill (Vicki) Caudill and their children, Miranda, Andy Burnside, Brianna, Marissa, and Brendan; and Dan (Rhonda) Caudill and their children, Heather and Alisha of Albia. Clair is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Alberta Friday and Ethel Lahart, both of Albia; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons in infancy, Stephen and Mark Caudill; a daughter, Rose Caudill; a granddaughter, Nicole Caudill; two brothers, Edwin and Harold Caudill; and five sisters, Myrtle Cardenzana, Zella Cruchelow, Mabel Tyrrel, Betty Stocker, and Bertha Temperance Caudill in infancy. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m., Thursday Aug. 11, 2011 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Albia, with Father Michael E. Volkmer, C.PP.S. as celebrant. Burial will follow services in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Albia, with military rites provided by the American Legion, Howard Cessna Post #136. Visitation will be held from 1-8 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011, at the Tharp-Winfield Funeral Home in Albia. Clair's family will be present throughout the day and evening. A rosary will be led Wednesday at 4 p.m., provided by St. Mary's Altar and Rosary Society and a Christian Wake Service will also be held at the funeral home, Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m. A memorial has been established to St. Mary's Catholic Church and Welcome Home Soldier Memorial.

LeRoy Wilson (1927-2011)

Tilman LeRoy Wilson, of Moravia, was born icon May 14, 1927, to Zell and Hazel (Darby) Wilson, and passed away Oct. 30, 2011, at the Monroe County Hospital after a short illness at the age of 84.

LeRoy grew up in Moravia and graduated from Moravia High School, class of 1945. He had a passion for his farm, livestock, the railroad, and the people who worked for the railroad. He never knew a stranger and had many friends from all walks of life. Anyone that knew LeRoy knew that on the coldest winter day he'd invite you in to sit by his wood stove and visit. On summer days you'd find him on the front porch swing. LeRoy never had any kids of his own, but did his part in raising many, through a game of Rook, hunting, fishing, and good conversation.

LeRoy is survived by a long list of family and friends, and will be missed by all. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011, at Tharp-Winfield Funeral Home, with Rev. Terry Chapman officiating.

Burial will be in Moravia Cemetery in Moravia. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2011 with family and friends present from 6-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Moravia Fire Department or Moravia First Responders.

Georgia Maxine Merrill (1916-2011)

Georgia "Maxine" Merrill, age 95 of Albia, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011, at Monroe Care Center in Albia.

Maxine was born icon Feb. 22, 1916, to George Elmer and Dora Mae (Turney) Sines in Chariton. She grew up and attended high school in Williamson. After school, she married icon Roy Monroe Merrill on Sept. 9, 1933 in Chariton. They shared 35 years of marriage before his passing in 1969. Maxine and George had two children, Keith Leroy and Larry Ronald Merrill.

Maxine was a homemaker all of her life, and a former member of the First Baptist Church in Albia. She enjoyed working with her hands.

She loved cooking and baking bread. Maxine was an expert at sewing.

She enjoyed doing crafts and making bed quilts and afghans. Maxine also enjoyed raising horses. Maxine is survived by her son, Keith Merrill; five grandchildren, Kim Brimeyer, Julie Merrill, Larry Ronald Merrill Jr., Scott Leroy Merrill, and Kellie Jo Armstrong.

She is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy; a son Larry; two daughters-in-law, Janice and Linda; her parents, George and Dora Mae; a brother, Allen Sines; and three sisters, Sarah Gardner, Genevieve Sampson, and Juanita Mister. Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m., Monday, Nov. 7, 2011, at Tharp-Winfield Funeral Home, with Pastor Richard Grimes officiating. Burial was in Oak View Cemetery in Albia. Visitation began 11 a.m., Sunday, Nov. 6, 2011, at the Tharp-Winfield Funeral Home in Albia, with Maxine's family present from 6-8 p.m. An open memorial has been established in Maxine's name.

Gerald M. Frazier (1938-2011)

Gerald M. Frazier, age 73 of Albia, died Friday, July 1, 2011, at his home in Albia.

Gerald was born icon on March 23, 1938 in Buxton to Matt and Flossie (Baugh) Frazier. Gerald attended country school. Gerald married icon Marilois Robinson on May 19, 1962 at the First Christian Church in Albia. They shared 47 years of marriage before her passing on Aug. 2, 2009.

Gerald served his country in the United States Air Force. He worked as a heavy machine operator with Local 234. Gerald enjoyed being outdoors, camping, boating, fishing, and gardening. He loved to play cards. Family was very important to Gerald. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially the Thomas family. Gerald is survived by his children, Sonya Bellon and Jerry Frazier both of Albia; and three grandchildren, Cody Castings, Hailey Bellon and Nichole Bellon.

He is also survived by two sisters, Lois Mae Maddy of Albia and Brenda Paris of Centerville; and many nieces and nephews.

Gerald is preceded in death by his wife, Marilois; his son, Randy Frazier; his parents; and four brothers, Keith, Harold, Bob, and Vance.

Funeral services were held 4 p.m., Tuesday, July 5, 2011, at Tharp-Winfield Funeral Home in Albia with Pastor Neil Montz officiating.

A private family burial will be held at a later date.

Visitation began at 1 p.m., Tuesday, July 5, 2011 until the start of the service at the funeral home. An open memorial has been established.

Charlotte A. Stewart

Charlotte A. Stewart, 78, passed away of leukemia at the
Taylor Hospice House on Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011. The funeral was
held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 26, 2011, at Highland Park
Presbyterian Church, 321 Euclid, Des Moines, with burial following
in the Service Chapel Cemetery, north of Albia.

Charlotte was born icon in Albia on Oct. 10, 1932 to Alva and Pauline (Harbison) Stewart, and lived in the Des Moines area most of her life, working for Central Life Assurance Company, and retiring after 38 years of service. She also worked for North High School in food service for 10 years. Charlotte volunteered at Iowa Lutheran Hospital for 33 years. She was a member of Highland Park Presbyterian Church, where she served on the Deacon board in the church.

Charlotte is survived by three sisters, Lodema Stewart and Velma (Rex) Derby, all of Des Moines, and Viola Wales of Ankeny.

Visitation was held at the Iles Funeral Home - Grandview Park Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Highland Park Presbyterian Church.
