Fred Summers Bergman
Fred S Bergman, 65, Two Harbors, died Tuesday, July 20, 1999 at the Lake View Memorial Hospital in Two Harbors.

He was born to Edwin and Esther Bergman June 21, 1934 in Two Harbors Minnesota.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Carl and Ray and infant son Ronald.

He is survived by wife Marlene of Two Harbors; sons Mike (Treasaigh) Anderson, Two Harbors, Duane (Bridget) Anderson of Miinneapolis, Tim Anderson and special friend Chris of Two Harbors, Larry Bergman and special friend Heather of Seattle; daughters Terri (Ty) Lampi, Sherri (Jim) Nicolaison both of Two Harbors; brothers Dean, Don and Cliff, sisters Lois Sand of Two Harbors and Jean Staib of Long lsland, NY, 11 grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends.

A private family buriaI will take place at Lakeview Cemetery in Two Harbors.

Gerald L. (Jerry) Olson
Gerald L. (Jerry) Olson, 55, Milwaukee, Wisc., formerly Two Harbors died Sunday, July 18 in Milwaukee.

Jerry was born in Iowa, Oct. 9, 1943 and grew up in Two Harbors and graduated from Two Harbors High School in 1961. He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church where his father was Pastor for many years.

He is survived by his mother, Esther of Norfolk, Nebraska; sons Daryl, St. Paul; Daniel, Two Harbors; daughter, Kimberly, Fort Worth, Texas; sister, Carolyn, Silt, Colo.; nephews, Vincent (Samantha) and Victor, Colo.; wife, Norma and special friend, Ginny of Milwaukee.

Funeral services were held in Milwaukee, July 24. A memorial service is being planned for a later date at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Two Harbors.

C.T. (Todd) Armstrong
C. T. "Todd" Armstrong, 68, of S Ridge E., Conneaut, OH, died Monday afernoon, July 19, at his home of a probable coronary. He was born May 14, 1931, in Conneaut, and was a son of Carroll and Valerie (Todd) Armstrong

Following graduation from Conneaut High School he enlisted in the US Air Force, and later sailed on the Great Lakes for 15 years, atferwhich he became Staff Representative and also served as President of United Steelworkers of America Local 5000 in Cleveland. He had also resided in Silver Bay, MN.

In addition to the Steelworkers, Mr. Armstrong was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6204, Silver Bay, MN; and Grand Lodge #454 F & AM, Cleveland, OH; Scottish Rite Valley of Ouluth, Eastern Star, Duluth, MN; and Shriners AAD Temple, Duluth, MN. He attended the Conneaut First Assembly of God, and enjoyed traveling and repairing items around his home

Mr. Armstrong is survived by his mother of Ashtabula OH; his wife Linda L. (Moore) whom he married Feb. 7, 1970, two daughters. Linda Battles of Geneva, OH, and Darla Pizzi, of Conneaut, OH, a son and daughter-in-iaw Victor and Betty Jo of Cleveland, OH, a brother, Dennis of Ashtabula, OH, his uncle Hubert Todd of Conneaut, five grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Funeral service were held Thursday, July 22, Burial was in East Conneaut Cemetery.

Robert C. Micklus
Robert C. Micklus, 73, Grand Marais, formerly of Knife River, died Monday, Aug. 9, 1999 in St. Mary’s Medical Center. He was born May 29, 1926 in Jackson, Minn. to Mike and Dora (Zellar) Micklus. He grew up in Lakefield, Minn. and Montana, graduating from high school in Lewistown, Mont. in 1944. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1950, then worked in Alaska for a short time. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a bachelor of science degree in Fishery and Wildlife Management in 1955. He was employed by the Minnesota DNR at fisheries in French River, Grand Rapids, Grand Marais and Finland until his retirement in 1985. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, trapping and moose horn hunting. He was a member of the National Trappers Association and the National Rifle Association.

Bob is survived by a daughter, Lori (Rob) Schroeder of Two Harbors; a step-son, Steve (Karen) Nelson of Two Harbors; a step-daughter, Dolores (Ron) Jackson of Knife River; two grandchildren, Christine (Mike) Bailey and Jake Schroeder; and one great-grandchild, Brandon Bailey; 5 step-grandchildren and 3 step-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service on Thursday, Aug. 12, in Cavallin Funeral Home in Two Harbors, followed by burial in Lakeview Cemetery, Two Harbors.

Doris Ann Marie (Buck) Peterson
Doris Ann Marie (Buck) Peterson, 80, of Coleraine, passed away Friday, August 6, 1999 in Itasca Medical Center, Grand Rapids. She married Wilbur Peterson and moved to Two Harbors. After Wilbur’s death she moved to Coleraine. Doris was a home health aide in Itasca County for many years, a member of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, and a devoted mother of her nine children.

She was preceded in death by her husband Wilbur; two daughters, Susan Sherman and Karen Hunter; a son, Charles Toewe, Jr.; and a brother, Robert Buck.

She is survived by four sons: Danny (Ethel) Toewe of Cohasset, Raymond (Cindy) Olsen of Ojai, Calif., James (Iole) Olsen of Austin, Tex., and David (Hyun Suk) Olsen of Eagan, Minn.; two daughters: Diane (John) Erickson of Grand Rapids and Judy (Jerry) Lyman of La Crosse, Wis.; four brothers: Earl Buck of Duluth, Mack Buck of Kingman, Ariz., Elmer Buck of Minneapolis, and Leo Buck of Duluth; two sisters: Helaine Freudenberg of Kingman and Harriet Schiltz of Duluth; 17 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held August 10 in St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church.

Carole Shogren
(Bernadine) Carole Shogren, 68, Two Harbors, died Thursday, August 19, 1999 at the Lake View Memorial Hospital in Two Harbors.

She was born in Michigan to Raymond and Molly Covington, December 17, 1930. She grew up in Chicago and graduated from Mt. Sinai School of Nursing. She married Ralph Shogren in 1956 and moved to Two Harbors. She was employed as a registered nurse at Lake View Memorial Hospital, St. Luke’s Hospital and Miller Dwan Medical Center until her retirement.

Carole enjoyed gardening, reading, embroidery, cross stitch and other handwork. She was a member of the Minnesota Nurses Association and Women of the Moose.

She is survived by sons David (Rebecca) of Texas, James (Jenny) of Two Harbors, Edward (Candace) of Warren, Mich., Daniel (Kierstan) of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands; daughter Ellen (Jay) Marston of Appleton, Wisc.; and nine grandchildren.

Services were held August 24 in Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Two Harbors. Arrangement by Cavallin Funeral Home.

Clarice Joy Jarvi
Clarice Joy Lingren was born on July 20, 1925 in Two Harbors to Herbert and Hilma L. Lingren. She grew up in Two Harbors and graduated from the Two Harbors High School. Following school she worked as a bookkeeper for Sonju Motors. On August 23, 1945 Clarice was joined in marriage to Roy Jarvi at Two Harbors. The couple moved to Duluth in 1952, and Thief River Falls in 1956 where Clarice was employed at Woolworths as the store shopper. In 1962 they moved to Alexandria.

She was active raising three children. Clarice enjoyed children and was known as the neighborhood mom. She worked as a secretary for the West Central Community Action program and later for the United Methodist Church. She was active in the church as a volunteer driver for elderly attending circle, served on the new church building committee, and enjoyed singing in the church choir. She loved dancing, crafts, music and singing. She especially enjoyed watching her four grandchildren grow up.

Clarice entered Bethany Home of Alexandria in February 1997. On August 16, 1999 Clarice died at the age of 74 years.

Clarice is survived by her husband, Roy of Alexandria; two sons, David and Steven of Alexandria; daughter, Susan (Barry) Froiland of Thief River Falls; brother, Ray (Joan) Lingren of Cloquet; sister, Mary Lou (David) Anderson of Proctor; four grandchildren, Reid, Taylor, Dane and Marah Froiland; and two nieces and two nephews.

A memorial service was held at the United Methodist Church on August 22. Interment followed in Two Harbors.

Billy A. Reineccius
Billy Arthur Reineccius, 67, Cambridge, Minn., and formerly of Silver Bay, died Friday, August 13, 1999 at the VA Medical Center in St. Cloud.

He was born on November 9, 1931 in Springvale Township to Walter and Irene Mae (From) Reineccius, the only son of four children. Billy grew up in Springvale and Walbo and attended Walbo school. He also attended Cambridge High School for one year. Billy joined the Air Force in 1951 and spent three of his four years in England. While stationed in England, he was in the Air Police.

After returning to the states he met and married Donna Jean Yerigan and to this union Toni and Timothy were born. Billy and Donna were divorced in 1964. He met and married Glendoris Taylor on October 22, 1966 and to this union Gary, Greg, Edie and Jody were born. Billy and Glendoris were divorced in 1982.

Billy worked for Oscar Roberts Cement Company out of Osseo as a truck driver. He also drove semi for Midwest Coast and Bestway Motor Freight. He lived in the Seattle area for 10 years before moving back to Minnesota. In Silver Bay he owned and operated a small engine repair shop. Billy had just moved back to Cambridge and lived here briefly before becoming ill and moving to the VA Hospital in St. Cloud.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Billy is survived by his missing daughter Toni Bachman, son Tim (Sue) of Andover, son Gary of Federal Way, Wash., son Greg (Kendra) of Federal Way, daughter Edie (Terry) Schmidt of Richland, Wash., and son Jody (Theresa) of Silver Bay; seven grandchildren and two step-grandchildren; three sisters, Ione Rose of Bradford, Jean (Melvin) Thompson of Zimmerman, and Marge (Bill) Palmer of Elk River; many nieces and nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services were held August 17. Interment was at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Myrtle I. Magnuson
Myrtle I. Magnuson, 83, Two Harbors, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999, in the Lake View Memorial Hospital. She was born July 25, 1916 to Edward and Gertrude (Neyhaus) Moen in Two Harbors, where she was a lifelong resident. She was employed as a dietary aide at Lake View Memorial Hospital for several years, and was a member of the Women of the Moose and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Wallace Holliday in 1963 and by her second husband, Ray Magnuson in 1995; and two brothers, Edward and Leslie Moen.

Myrtle is survived by a son, William (Phyllis) Holliday of Two Harbors; a daughter, Marjorie (Larry) Levenske, also of Two Harbors; a brother, Morris (Marjorie) Moen of Two Harbors; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service on Thursday, Sept. 9 in Cavallin Funeral Home in Two Harbors, followed by burial in Lakeview Cemetery, Two Harbors.

Viola E. Fenstad
Viola E. Fenstad, 84, Little Marais, died Monday, Sept. 6, 1999, in St. Mary’s Medical Center.

She was born January 26, 1915 to Martin and Alice (Ellquist) Erickson in Grand Marais. She grew up and attended schools on Maple Hill, near Grand Marais. In 1934, Viola married Theodore “Ted” Fenstad and they made their home in Little Marais since that time. Ted preceded her in death in 1985. She was a member of the United Protestant Church in Silver Bay, and greatly enjoyed gardening, and feeding and watching birds.

Viola is survived by a son Torrence of Comstock, Wis.; a daughter, Serine (Russell) Ege of Little Marais; a brother, Warren “Bill” (Gertrude) Erickson of Grand Marais; two sisters, Eileen (Charles) Hall of Tofte and Gladys Stromgren of Watertown, Wis.; six grandchildren, Robert Ege, Julie Furstenau, Valerie Schultz, Marie Fenstad, Sonja Erickson and Laura Fenstad; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, in the United Protestant Church in Silver Bay. Burial will be in Silver Bay Cemetery. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

Memorials are preferred to American Heart Association.

Ellen L. Butler
Ellen L. Butler, 90, Meridian, formerly of Two Harbors, died Thursday, Aug. 26, 1999, in Boise, Idaho.

Ellen was born September 7, 1908, at Kewanee, Ill., to Johan and Christine Bergstrom. She grew up and was educated at Two Harbors and was deputy treasurer for Lake County until her marriage to Henry Butler on April 2, 1930. She and Henry spent their early years in the Duluth area and Pike Lake. Henry enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942, and Ellen and their daughter joined him in Alameda, Calif. in 1943. The family moved to Caldwell in 1946, where Henry managed the Golden Rule Stores’ appliance repair shop. In 1948 they established Butler Appliance Service and operated this business together until retirement in 1968. Ellen moved to Meridian last year.

Ellen has been a member of the United Methodist Church since 1953, where she had been active in the Women’s Society for more than 40 years. Last year Ellen received her treasured 50 year membership pin from the Gem of the Mountain Rebekah Lodge #5. She also was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Montana Avenue Friendship Club for many years.

She is survived by her daughter Mary Ellen (Ernie) Knapp of Boise; a niece, June Jankowski of Caldwell; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by Henry in 1991, and six brothers and sisters.

The family suggests memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church, 824 E. Logan, Caldwell, ID 83605 or to a favorite charity.

Gerald Neil "Jerry" Hassett
Gerald Neil “Jerry” Hassett

Former Elko High School teacher and coach Gerald Neil “Jerry” Hassett, 64, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 1999 at his home.

He was born January 13, 1935, in Duluth to Christopher and Janet Bomier Hassett, and grew up in Two Harbors.

He attended the University of Minnesota and met Mary C. Pellow, whom he married on August 18, 1956, in Bessemer.

He graduated from Mankato State College in Minnesota in 1959 and began his teaching career in Holloway, Minn. He later moved to Oregon, before coming to Elko in 1964, where he was a teacher, assistant football coach and head baseball coach. He also later served as head varsity football coach for Elko High School. He concluded 29 years of teaching and coaching when he retired from EHS in 1991.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, cooking and being with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Mary C. Hassett of Elko; sons Michael (Mary) and William (Kathy), all of Elko, and Joseph (Wilma) of Reno; daughters Marjorie (Trapper) Lemback of Elko and Catherine (David) Bean of Chandler, Ariz.; sister, Carol Stein of Coyote, Calif.; brothers, Keith Hassett of Redwing, Minn., and Steve Hassett of Hollywood, Fla.; and 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, John Hassett.
