Dennis Olson

JOHNSON LAKE -- Dennis L. Olson, 55, of Johnson Lake, formerly of rural Broken Bow, died Monday, April 17, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Evangelical Free Church in Broken Bow. The Rev. Jeff Nielsen will officiate. Burial will be in the Merna Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Mr. Olson was born icon on Aug. 24, 1944, at Broken Bow to LeRoy E. and Birdie Mae (Kruse) Olson. He attended school at Gates through the eighth grade and graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1962. He then attended Kearney State College.

He married Connie Fariss on July 31, 1963. They lived near Gates north of Broken Bow and operated Olson Gravel. He later sold the farm and gravel operation. He moved to Lexington in 1993. He was working for Overton Sand and Gravel.

He married Willa (Keller) Dowse on June 1, 1999, at Johnson Lake.

He was a past member of Broken Bow Elks Lodge 1688 and was active in the One-Box Pheasant Hunt in Broken Bow for more than 20 years.

Survivors include his wife, Willa; one son, Levi of Sargent; two daughters, Cynthia (Mrs. Larry) Jones and Cally Lowe, both of Joshua, Texas; two stepsons, Bill Dowse of Pocatello, Idaho, and Matt Dowse of Lincoln; seven grandchildren; his father, of Yuma, Ariz.; his mother, Birdie Teutsch of North Platte; and two brothers, Rod of Broken Bow and Jerry of Long Beach, Miss.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Christina Lynn Olson; and one brother, Danny Lee Olson.

Ella Casteel

Ella Jane Casteel, 81, of Grand Island died Saturday, April 15, 2000, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home Chapel in Grand Island. The Rev. Delvin Roper will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Grand Island.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Trinity United Methodist Church or Central Nebraska Humane Society.

Lola Espersen

Lola P. Espersen, 71, of Grand Island Veterans Home died Saturday, April 15, 2000, at the home.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Kleine Funeral Home chapel. The Rev. Donald Burger will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to donor's choice.

Keith Kovanda

BURWELL -- Keith Jess Kovanda, 73, of Burwell died Saturday, April 15, 2000, at Valley County Nursing Home in Ord.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at United Church of Christ Congregational Church in Burwell. The Rev. Jane Ellefson will officiate. Mr. Kovanda was cremated.

There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to Ord Hospice, Calamus Golf Course or Ord Golf Course.

Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell is in charge of arrangements.

LaVina Strohl

TAYLOR -- LaVina Viola Strohl, 92, of Taylor, died Friday, April 14, 2000, at Valley County Hospital in Ord.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Rhoad Funeral Chapel in Sargent. The Rev. Roy Kiester will officiate. Burial will be in the Almeria Cemetery west of Taylor.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Loup County Rescue Unit or the Loup County Historical Society.

Mrs. Strohl was born icon June 7, 1907, at Ord to Ben and Hilda H. (Anderson) Aldrich. She went to school in Garfield and Loup County and graduated from Taylor High School in 1926.

She taught school in Rock County for several years.

She married Rothwell Strohl on Feb. 14, 1931 in Ord. They lived in Loup County until they moved to Taylor in 1947.

They operated a service station and restaurant in Taylor for 35 years.

She was active in various organizations and was treasurer for the Loup County Fair board for a number of years.

She is survived by one sister, Vera Boelter of Anaheim, Calif. and one brother, Oscar Aldrich of Idaho.

She was preceded in death by her husband, two sisters, Louise Dye and Fern Witt and two brothers, Wilbur and Laverne Aldrich.

Ellen Weekes

GREELEY -- Ellen Irene Weekes, 101, of Greeley died Saturday, April 15, 2000, at Greeley Care Home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church in Greeley. The Rev. Cynthia Altstadt will officiate. Burial will be in Greeley City Cemetery.

Visitation will take place prior to the service on Tuesday. Memorials are suggested to Greeley Care Home.

T.J. Finn and Sons Funeral Home in Greeley is in charge of arrangements.

Miss Weekes was born icon April 21, 1898, to Charles and Elizabeth (McClung) Weekes at Greeley. She grew up in Greeley and graduated from Greeley High School. She graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln and received her medical training in Chicago.

She worked as a laboratory technician in Omaha. She later purchased the lab and operated it for a number of years. After she sold the lab, she worked for Veterans Administration Hospital in Omaha. She retired at age 75, and moved to Greeley. She has been a Greeley Care Home resident since 1991.

She was a member of United Methodist Church in Greeley. She enjoyed painting.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Tom, Samuel and William; her twin sister, Elizabeth Anderson and sister, Ruth Tarr.

Ruby Petzoldt

Ruby M. Petzoldt, 79, of Grand Island died Tuesday, April 11, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Pauls Lutheran Church. The Rev. Joel Schroeder will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the church or the American Cancer Society.

Mrs. Petzoldt was born icon on May 14, 1920, on a farm between Doniphan and Giltner to Giat and Emma (Kroeger) Spiehs. She attended District 38 School. She worked for a time doing domestic house work and then for J.C. Penney.

She married Elmer Petzoldt on March 15, 1944, at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Grand Island. The couple farmed near St. Libory for two years and then moved to the Spiehs farm between Doniphan and Giltner, where they farmed until their retirement in 1991. The couple then moved to Grand Island. Mr. Petzoldt died on April 7, 2000.

Mrs. Petzoldt was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church and the Deepwell Extension Club.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol (Mrs. Wayne) Schroeder of Grand Island; a son, Lavern Petzoldt of Doniphan; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and one brother, Raymond Spiehs of Cairo.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Rudolph, Alfred and infant brothers George and twins Leonard and Giat Jr.

James Vaclav Rejda

BURWELL -- James Vaclav Rejda, 97, of Burwell died Wednesday, April 12, 2000, at the Sargent Nursing Center.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Burwell. The Rev. Michael Laing will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell.

Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church.

Adrian Remington

ORD -- Adrian A. Remington, 74, of Ord, died Wednesday, April 12, 2000, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Grand Island.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Ord United Methodist Church. The Rev. James B. Miller will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery with military rites by the Ord VFW and the American Legion.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Ord Memorial Chapel.

Memorials are suggested to the Ord United Methodist Church or the Ord Township Library.

Bessie Gibbons

BELLEVUE -- Bessie M. Gibbons, 86, of Bellevue, died Feb. 20, 2000, in Omaha.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Brewer Korisko Chapel in Omaha.

Additional gathering will be from 2 to 4 p.m. April 29 at the Ord Elks Club in Ord. Inurnment will be in the Old Bohemian Cemetery at Ord.

Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association.

Mrs. Gibbons was born icon to Charles and Mary Janda.

Survivors include a son, William of Portland, Ore.; two daughters, Joyce (Mrs. Jim) Bemis of Denver and Eileen (Mrs. Chuck) Scharnowski of Elkhart, Ind.; one brother, William Janda of Ord; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo, two sisters and two brothers.

Floyd Augustyn

WICHITA, Kan. -- Floyd C. Augustyn, 86, formerly of Ord, died Monday, April 10, 2000, at his son's home in Wichita, Kan.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Ord. The Rev. Jim Warner will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery with military rites by the Ord Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., with a rosary at 7:30 p.m., Thursday at Ord Memorial Chapel.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Mr. Augustyn was born icon on Jan. 6, 1914, at Elyria to Charles and Mary (Shotkoski) Augustyn. He was educated in a country school in Valley County and at Ord High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946.

Mr. Augustyn farmed in the Elyria Township of Valley County. For the last seven years, he had lived in Wellington, Kan., and had just recently been living with his son in Wichita.

He was a member of the Ord VFW and the Burwell Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include three sons, Michael of Wichita, Kan., Floyd of Santee, Calif., and Charles; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an infant son; one great-granddaughter; four brothers, Adam, Frank, Benjamin and Thomas; and four sisters, Helen, Verna, Cecilia and Clara.
