Mildred Christensen

STROMSBURG -- Mildred Christensen, 92, of Stromsburg, formerly of Norfolk and Lindsay, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, at the Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Ansgar Lutheran Church in rural Lindsay. The Rev. Neal Vonseggern will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Newman Grove Memorial Funeral Home.

Mrs. Christensen was born icon Jan. 16, 1908, at Genoa to Henry and Eula (Phillips) Simpson. She attended school at Palestine Country School.

She married Niels Christensen on Dec. 25, 1925, in Columbus. The couple farmed south of Lindsay until 1948, when they moved to Burwell. In 1965, they moved to Norfolk, where they lived until Mr. Christensen's death in 1991.

She was a member of St. Ansgar Lutheran Church, a past member of ladies aid at Bethany Lutheran Church and the B As U R neighborhood club of Primrose.

Survivors include three daughters, Emily (Mrs. Ed) Eisenman of Sun City West, Ariz., Helen (Mrs. Laddie) Socha of Norfolk and Margaret Langan of Scottsdale, Ariz.; one son, George of Grand Island; 25 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Naomi Snyder of Burwell, Lola Greathouse of Lincoln and Donna Johnson of Pueblo, Colo.; and one brother, Milton Simpson of Burwell.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson; three great-grandchildren; two sisters; and five brothers.

Bernice Hellwege

ST. PAUL -- Bernice L. Hellwege, 75, of St. Paul died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at the Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Zion Lutheran Church cemetery in Worms. Memorial services will follow at 11 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church in St. Paul. The Rev. Robert Paulson will officiate. Mrs. Hellwege was cremated. Jacobsen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

There will be no visitation, although the family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Christ Lutheran Church.

Memorials are suggested to the Christ Lutheran Church annex fund or to St. Francis hospice.

Mrs. Hellwege was born icon May 4, 1924, at Worms to John and Erna (Niemoth) Helzer. She was raised in Worms and graduated from Grand Island Senior High School in 1943.

She married Dale Hellwege on Dec. 21, 1947, in Worms. They farmed near St. Libory. Mr. Hellwege died on May 10, 1972. Mrs. Hellwege moved to St. Paul, where she lived for the remainder of her life. She worked various jobs, predominately as a caregiver, until 1995.

She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid and the Jolly Wives Card Club.

Survivors include three sons, Craig of Lincoln, Randy of Grand Island and Patrick of Lincoln; a daughter, Nancy (Mrs. John) Forbes of Palmer; eight grandchildren; and two sisters, Vi Helzer of Los Angeles, Calif. and Shirley Helzer of San Francisco, Calif.

Robert Powers

ST. PAUL -- Robert D. Powers, 54, of St. Paul died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at the Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul.

Services are pending with Jacobsen Funeral Home.

Ruth Smith

HASTINGS -- Ruth E. (Mihm) Smith, 68, of Hastings, died Jan. 27, 2000, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services were Jan. 29 at the Harvard United Church of Christ. The Rev. Stanley Crawford officiated. Mrs. Smith was cremated. Burial was in the Harvard Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Alberding-Wilson Funeral Home in Harvard is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Smith was born icon Feb. 12, 1931, to Frank and Matilda (Alberding) Mihm at Harvard.

She married Harold E. Smith on June 27, 1954. Afterwards, they lived in Colorado Springs, Colo., for a short while. The couple moved to Harvard and farmed there for 36 years until they retired and moved to Hastings. They were active in Meals on Wheels.

She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Deb (Mrs. Sheldon) Tobler of Harvard and Brenda (Mrs. Paul) Prieksat of LeMars, Iowa; two sons, Tim of Blair and Lonnie of Johnston, Iowa, and 13 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers.

Ruth Trimble

DONIPHAN -- Ruth H. Trimble, 97, of Doniphan died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at Wood River Good Samaritan Center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Bethesda United Methodist Church in Holtwood, Pa. The Rev. Mills will officiate. Burial will be at Bethesda United Methodist Cemetery in Holtwood.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Reynolds Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the Western Hall County Good Samaritan Center in Wood River.

Mrs. Trimble was born icon Jan. 11, 1903, at Lancaster, Pa., to Joseph and Mary (Douts) Cramer.

She married W. Lester Trimble, who died in September 1982. She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women's Association.

She was an avid quilter.

Survivors include one daughter, Faye (Mrs. Eugene) Groff of Doniphan; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Richard C., three brothers and one sister.

Lyman Novy

LINCOLN -- Lyman L. Novy, 63, of Lincoln died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, in Lincoln.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Roper and Sons Chapel in Lincoln. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Tarkio Home Cemetery in Tarkio, Mo.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday and from 7 a.m. until the service at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Novy was born icon April 29, 1936, to Fred and Christine (Holub) Novy. He attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and graduated from Kearney State College.

He was a music teacher at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln. He also played with various bands.

He was a former member and choir director of Federated Church in Sutton. He was also a member of Masonic Evening Lodge No. 49, A.F. and A.M. in Sutton. He belonged to the Nebraska Music Teachers Association and was a senior center volunteer as well.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Novy of Lincoln; a daughter, Gayle (Mrs. Jason) Bonnes of Des Moines, Iowa; a son, David Novy of St. Joseph, Mo.; a grandchild; and a sister, Irma (Mrs. Dewaine) Alcorn of Lincoln.

Warren Garrett

Warren B. Garrett, 79, of Grand Island died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Leo's Catholic Church in Grand Island with the Rev. Jack Rademacher officiating. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Grand Island.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church with a rosary at 7 p.m. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to the Diabetic Association, St. Leo's Catholic Church or the St. Francis Foundation.

Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Garrett was born icon Dec. 5, 1920, in Palmer to Walter and Frankie (Good) Garrett. He grew up in Central City where he attended District 13 School. He graduated from Central City High School in 1939 and attended Southwest Texas State in San Marcus, Texas.

He farmed with his father until entering the U.S. Army in 1941. During World War II he served as a paratrooper with the11th Airborne in the Philippines, Okinawa and Japan. He was honorably discharged in 1946.

On April 7, 1947, he married Theresa Halpin in Grand Island. The couple lived in Lander, Wyo., where he worked in the oil fields. They moved back to Grand Island in 1959, where he was employed as a salesman for Hytrotex Industries, serving as a territory manager for several states.

He founded Garrett Enterprises Inc., in 1965 and opened the Wood River Truck Stop that year. He started Garrett Tire in 1973 and Platte Valley Retreaders in 1989. He retired in 1994 due to ill health.

Garrett served on the board of NATSO, was a Grand Knight of KC 1159, past president of the Cosmopolitan Club, served on the board of St. Francis Hospital, was president of Holding Board of Riverside Golf Club, a member of the Saddle Club, Platt-Duetsche Society, United Veterans Club, and a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church where he served on the board.

Survivors include his wife, Theresa of Grand Island; two sons, Michael Garrett and Joel Garrett, both of Grand Island; one daughter, Patt (Mrs. Lonnie) Rice of Grand Island; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Mark Garrett of Great Bend, Kan.; and David Garrett of Courtland, Va.; and four sisters, Virginia Stalker of Grand Island, Helen (Mrs. Leonard) Hoffman of Bradshaw, Muriel Schroyer of Laramie, Wyo., and Mary (Mrs. Hubert) Fritz of Clarks.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Wesley Garrett.

Albert Thurber

Albert F. Thurber, 96, of Grand Island died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Mr. Thurber was cremated. Services are pending with Kleine Funeral Home.

Dale Hurlburt

ARCADIA -- Dale Hurlburt, 77, of Arcadia died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services will be at 10:30 p.m. at the Arcadia United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Arcadia City Cemetery with military rites by the Arcadia American Legion.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at the Ord Memorial Chapel, which is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested at the family's choice.

Edward Kyees

SHELTON -- Edward L. Kyees, 89, of Shelton died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000 in Grand Island.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Shelton with Charles Spence officiating. Burial will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Valentine with Godberson Mortuaries in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church in Shelton.

Memorials are suggested to the church.

Mr. Kyees was born icon June 7, 1910, in Valentine to Edward and Pearle (Jelly) Kyees. He grew up in the Valentine area and graduated from Valentine High School in 1929.

He also attended Boyles Business College in Omaha and in 1932 accepted a position as a salesman for the E.H. Roberts Portrait Company in Kansas City, Mo.

During World War II he worked in Fort Worth, Texas, for Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Corporation in production control and for North American Aviation in Kansas City, Kan., in the planning department.

After the war he returned to sales work and started his own business, Photographic Reproduction Service.

On Aug.16, 1942, he married Colleen Oliver in San Antonio, Texas. The couple lived in the Kansas City, Mo., area for 31 years. After retiring in 1973, Kyees and his wife moved to Shelton.

He was a member of the Shelton United Methodist Church and United Methodist Men.

Survivors include two sons, John of Westerville, Ohio, and James of Solvang, Calif., and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife and one brother, Donovan.
