Shirley Ann Hoffmann

WOODSTOCK, Ga. — Shirley Ann Hoffmann, 67, of Woodstock, Ga., and formerly of Masonville, N.Y., died Tuesday, March 18, 2003, in Marietta, Ga., after an extended illness.

She was born Sept. 26, 1935, daughter of William and Dorothea Sawdy in the town of Tompkins, N.Y.

Shirley attended and graduated from Deposit High School. Following in her grandmother's footsteps, she wanted to teach. She attended the State University College at Oneonta and earned her bachelor's and master's degrees. Mrs. Hoffmann taught in Masonville and Sidney elementary schools as well as Camp Brace, with much of her focus on teaching and helping children to read, Shirley was also a certified clown named Lulu Belle, who performed magic.

After they retired, Shirley and Ken moved to Woodstock, Ga., where they resided for the past eight years.

She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Kenneth L. Hoffmann, of Woodstock, Ga.; mother, Dorothea Brundage of Franklin, N.Y.; father, William Sawdy of Lancaster, Va.; son and daughter-in-law, David and Marcelle Hoffmann of Los Angeles, Calif.; daughter and son-in-law, Lee Ann and Stephen Revalski of Woodstock, Ga.; three brothers, Glenn Brundage of Mogadore, Ohio, Lawrence Brundage of Croghan, N.Y., Sheridan Brundage of Gloucester, Va.; two sisters, Carolyn Henglein, of Berlin, Md., Audrey Archibald of Franklin, N.Y.; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 22, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, N.Y.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 23, at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Pastor Robert Howard of the Masonville Federated Church will officiate.

Burial will be in Walton Cemetery, Walton.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney.

Lawrence Bearce

SPRINGFIELD CENTER — Mr. Lawrence Albert Bearce, 87, passed away Friday, March 21, 2003, at his daughter's home.

He was born Nov. 15, 1915, in Carlisle, Mass., the son of Eugene Fernald and Orra Lucretia Bearce.

On Dec. 4, 1942, he married Irma Dorothy Stanton in Carlisle, Mass. She survives.

He graduated from Massachusetts State, Stockbridge, Mass., where he was captain of the ice hockey team and cross country runner. He was a resident of Springfield for 38 years and was a farmer for many years.

Mr. Bearce was a member of the Richfield Springs Bible Church. He was a Sunday school teacher and elder. He enjoyed bowling for the last 30-plus years at Van Hornesville Bowling Alley (Route 80 Bowl) and some at Richfield Springs. He bowled in a league until February this year at age 87.

Besides his wife, Irma Bearce, he is survived by a brother, Wendell Bearce, and a sister, Mrs. Dorothy Haley; his eldest son, Eric Bearce of Phoenix, Ariz.; his son, Russell Bearce of Danvers, Mass.; his son, Paul Bearce of Mechanicville, N.Y.; his son, Todd Bearce of Phoenix, Ariz.; two daughters, Ellen Brown of Springfield Center and Cynthia Greene of North Yarmouth, Maine; 17 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 23, at the Richfield Springs Bible Church, 17 Church St., Richfield Springs, with the Rev. Alan Miller officiating.

Burial will be later in Carlisle, Mass.

There will be no public calling hours.

Contributions in Mr. Bearce's memory may be made to the Africa Inland Mission, Box 178, Pearl River, NY 10965.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley, N.Y.

John R. Turnbull

NEW LISBON — John R. Turnbull, 67, of New Lisbon, died unexpectedly Friday, March 21, 2003.

He was born Jan. 15, 1936, in Oneonta, the son of George and Vivian (Rockwell) Turnbull.

He was married to Ruth M. Rood on Dec. 16, 1967, at the Baptist Parsonage in Hartwick by the Rev. Schindler.

John attended Morris Central School where he was an avid sports player, graduating in 1954.

He was a born farmer, starting while still attending school at 15. He purchased his own farm within a few years of graduation, and lived there for his remaining life.

John was a member of the Dairylea Cooperative Inc. for 52 years, receiving a recognition award for 50 Years of Loyalty as a member in October 2001. In 1995, John was awarded a certificate of appreciation for 40 Years of Loyal Patronage from I.L. Richer Co. In 1989, he was given the Award of Excellence for Herd Achievement for the outstanding quality of milk produced in the Northeast in Chenango County. John also received in 2001, a Certificate of Recognition for 20 years of dedicated service to the town of New Lisbon.

John loved all aspects of farming. He was devoted to his family, and enjoyed spending time with them — especially his grandson, Timmy. He enjoyed visiting with friends, and when possible he was always ready to kick up his heals square dancing.

John and his brother, Howard, operated a sawmill together up on John's farm. Thirty years ago he sawed his own wood for the addition on his barn. Many items in the Turnbull home were built from hand-sawed boards from the mill. The previous owner of the mill that John and Howard operated had sawed the boards for the home that his daughter Sharon and her family now live in.

John is survived by his wife, Ruth, of 35 years. His children and their spouses, Sharon and Robert Simmons of Edmeston, and Vivian Turnbull and Corey Layman of Albany; his grandson, Timothy Simmons of Edmeston; three brothers and their spouses, Howard and Priscilla Turnbull of Edmeston, Bruce and Beverly Turnbull of Wilmington, Del., and James and Marie Turnbull of Harrisburg, Pa.; his sister and her husband, Isabel and Stephen Winters of Garrattsville; his mother-in-law, Florence Rood; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and their spouses, Gladys Eldred of Norwich, Lawrence and Rita Rood of Mount Vision, William Arthur Rood of Oneonta, Edward and Linda Rood of Hartwick, Patricia and Frederick DeForest of West Edmeston, Dorothy and Roy Roberts of Oneonta, Mykel and Deborah Rood of West Burlington, Mary and John Bush of Hartwick; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother-in-law, Robert Rood Jr.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston, with the Rev. John Young officiating. Family will be receiving friends at the New Lisbon Town Hall after the service.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, March 24, 2003, at the funeral home.

Interment will be at Hillington Cemetery in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John's memory to the Garrattsville Emergency Squad.

Funeral arrangements are by the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Lloyd R. Butler

NEW KINGSTON — Lloyd R. Butler, 82, of Brook Road, New Kingston, died March 23, 2003, at his residence.

He was born Dec. 28, 1920, in New Kingston, in the town of Middletown, the son of Richard Marshall Butler and Susan Sarah (Baker) Butler.

Lloyd married Sandra Case on Feb. 11, 1989, in New Kingston. He had been a lifelong area resident and farmer.

Lloyd will be remembered for his old fashioned ways and common sense. He would put in a hard day's work and make it seem fun with his sense of humor.

Lloyd is survived by his wife, Sandra Butler, New Kingston; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one brother, Telford Butler; and four sisters, Lula Banks, Mable Bouton, Mary Schebesta and Leona Ballard.

Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at the Hynes Funeral Home, Margaretville

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at the United Presbyterian Church, New Kingston, with Diane Wickham and Joseph Grieco, officiating.

Burial will be held at a later date in the New Kingston Cemetery.

Virginia E. Finch

MARGARETVILLE — Virginia Elizabeth Finch, 87, of Margaretville, died Saturday, March 22, 2003, at Maplewood Manor, Ballston Spa.

She was born on Jan. 1, 1916, in Roxbury, the daughter of Byron Hill Haight and Leona Jane Brenn.

She married Harold W. Finch on April 20, 1935, in Roxbury. He died Sept. 6, 1989.

Prior to working with her husband in the operation of Finch's Frozen Foods in Margaretville, she had worked in the business office of the Roxbury Central School.

She moved from Woodside, Queens, back to the Margaretville area in 1937. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Margaretville. She had graduated from the Albany Business College. Virginia was well-known for her volunteer work in the Margaretville area.

Virginia is survived by one son, Gary Finch, Ballston Lake; one daughter, Barbara Finch, Beverly Hills, Calif.; one granddaughter, Christine Finch, Phoenix, Ariz.; one grandson, Glenn Finch, Berkeley, Calif.; sisters-in-law, Myrtle Neidl, Rome, and Marjorie Leonard, Lake Wales, Fla.; and nieces and nephews.

Graveside services with committal will be held at a later date in the Roxbury Cemetery, Roxbury.

Contributions in memory of Virginia E. Finch may be made to the Harold Finch Memorial Fund for the Youth Camping Memorial at the United Methodist Church, Margaretville.

Ellamae Christian

SOUTH NEW BERLIN — Ellamae Christian, 84, longtime resident of South New Berlin, passed away early Wednesday morning, March 19, 2003, in the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital of Cooperstown.

Ellamae was born Feb. 5, 1919, in Hartwick, the daughter of Fred and Jennie (Doyle) Palmer. Her adoptive parents were Hubert and Alta (Platt) Holmes.

On March 5, 1938, in Gilbertsville, she married Donald Christian. He survives her.

Ellamae grew up in Norwich and had attended the Norwich and South New Berlin schools. A resident of South New Berlin since 1946, she had worked for the fishline factory and the Dimock Hollow Phone Co. Her last employment was with the Norwich Shoe Co., where she worked for a period of 20 years, retiring in 1981.

Ellamae is survived by her husband of 65 years, Donald Christian, of South New Berlin; her children, David Paul Christian and his wife, Ann, of South New Berlin, Mary Lee Meyers and her husband, Kenneth, of South New Berlin, and Cynthia Ann Christian of Vienna, Va.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; her sister, Bertha Johnson of Cooperstown; her sister-in-law, Beatrice Palmer; and several nieces and nephews.

Ellamae was predeceased by her son, Donald W. Christian; her daughter-in-law, Mary Lou Christian; two sisters, Margaret Thompson and Grace Houck; her two brothers, Elmer and Walter Palmer; and two great-grandchildren.

There will be no calling hours.

Graveside services for Ellamae will be held in the spring from the Maplewood Cemetery of Mount Upton.

Memorial contributions may be made to the South New Berlin Fire Department, South New Berlin Emergency Squad, or to the South New Berlin Fireman's Auxiliary, South New Berlin, NY 13843.

Arrangements are by the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home.

Archie B. Clark

SMYRNA — Archie B. Clark, 66, of Main Street, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, March 19, 2003, while visiting with his son in Florida.

Born May 5, 1936, in Earlville, he was a son of Archie and Elizabeth Clark and received his education in local schools.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He had worked at T.A.C.O. in Sherburne and then at the Chase Memorial Nursing Home in New Berlin until his retirement.

On July 28, 1956, Archie was united in marriage to the former Faith Dungey in Earlville. She predeceased him on Dec. 1, 2002.

Archie was a member of the Edmeston American Legion Post, and his favorite pastime was woodworking.

Surviving are three sons and two daughters-in-law, Kevin and Nancy Clark of Edmeston, Keith and Monika Clark of Cecelia, Ky., and Christopher Clark of Smyrna; a sister, Eva Clark of Cortland; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Katrina Brown in 2001; and a brother, LeRoy Clark.

Friends are invited to call from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. prior to the service. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, 2003, from the Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 10 South Main St., Sherburne.

Interment will be in the West Hill Cemetery, Sherburne.

Jean Rennie Salata

ONEONTA — Jean Rennie Salata, 76, of Oneonta died Monday, March 24, 2003, at the Oneonta Nursing & Rehabilitation Center after a brief illness.

She was born Jan. 12, 1927, in Oneonta, the daughter of William and Janet (Rennie) Hughes.

She married Steve Salata on Feb. 14, 1948, in Oneonta.

Mrs. Salata was an elementary education teacher in Morris, where she taught fifth grade until her retirement. She was a lifelong area resident and received both her bachelor's and master's degrees from the State University College at Oneonta.

She was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Oneonta.

Mrs. Salata was an avid gardener and enjoyed knitting afghans and other items of clothing for charitable organizations.

Mrs. Salata is survived by her husband, Steve Salata, at home; three sons, Steve Jr. and his wife, Mary, of Waterville, David of Mesa, Ariz., and Paul of Chandler, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Jones of Hamilton, and Jennie Stanton of Cooperstown; a sister-in-law, Peg Hughes of Oneonta; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a brother, William Hughes.

There are no calling hours.

Memorial services will be held privately at the convenience of the family.

Those who wish may make contributions to the Oneonta Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, 330 Chestnut St., Oneonta, NY 13820, in memory of Mrs. Salata.

Anna M. Holway

ONEONTA — Mrs. Anna Marcia Holway, 96, passed away March 24, 2003, at The Meadows Nursing Home, Cooperstown.

She was born Nov. 25, 1906, in Westport, the daughter of William Edward and Carrie (Bouchard) Smith.

On May 25, 1930, she married James Edward Holway in Lake Placid. He predeceased her on April 28, 1983.

She received her registered nurse's training in Amsterdam and served her profession into her 70s.

She and her husband were longtime residents of Saranac Lake and moved to Riviera Beach, Fla., in the 1950s.

Mrs. Holway enjoyed bowling, fishing, designing and making crafts, and after moving to Florida in the 1950s she became an avid beach comber. She enjoyed the company of her cats and parakeets. She was always willing and able to look in on shut-ins, or provide transportation for shopping or to the doctor.

Survivors include a son, James Gary Holway of Mount Vision; three grandchildren, Betsy Joy Holway of Mount Vision, Cherylyn Dawn Greiner of Mount Vision, and Darcie Ann Holway of Champlain; nine great-grandchildren, Bradley Robert Ganio, TairaDawn Johnson, MorganAnn Blatz, Sarah Louise Greiner, Curtis John James Sasina, Kyle John Greiner, Erika Madeline Blatz, Turner Howell Holway and Malee Rose Copeland; two great-great-grandchildren, Kayla Dawn Johnson and Sierra Mae Johnson. And she would have had two more great-great-grandchildren within the next few days. She is also survived by a sister, Hattie Smith Sayre, lifelong resident of Wadhams; a halfsister, Amy Peele of Clifton Park; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a younger brother, William "Bill" Smith.

Graveside internment services will be held for the immediate family at a later date.

Contributions in Ann's memory may be made to the donor's local Hospice.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

James R. Hall

SIDNEY — James R. Hall, 77, of Sidney, passed away Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

He was born Dec. 1, 1925, son of the late Henry and Verna (Porter) Hall in Sidney.

James entered the United States Navy in 1942 at 17 years old and was honorably discharged.

In 1950, he married Joyce M. Sanford in Sidney. Mr. Hall was employed as a design engineer for E.C.D. of Bendix in Sidney for 40 years.

He designed a part aboard Apollo 2, the first manned lunar landing.

He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing and golfing. Jim was an avid golfer and was a member of the Sidney Golf and Country Club. He also enjoyed woodworking. He built the home that his family has lived in for 50 years.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce, Sidney; son, Timothy Hall, Sidney; two daughters and sons-in-law, Debra and Mark Philpott, Sidney, and Constance and Gregory Umbra, Sidney; eight grandchildren, Toby, James, Justin, Parker, Nicole, Jared, Katelyn and Piper; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was also predeceased by his sister, Marlene Heesh.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 28, 2003, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney, at 11 a.m. Friends may call Thursday; the family will be in attendance from 7 to 9 p.m.

Arrangements are under the direction of C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, Sidney.
