Woodrow W. Gamble
Woodrow Wilson “Bubba” Gamble, 75, husband of Elouise Graham Gamble, died Wednesday, December 11, 2002, at Carolinas Hospital System of Florence.

Born Nov. 15, 1927, in the Scranton section of Florence County, he was the son of the late Rev. Sam Gamble and Edna McFadden Gamble. He attended Florence County public schools. In his youth he joined St. John A.M.E. Church, where he served on the steward board. He was a former employee of Coker Builders of Turbeville.

Survivors besides his wife of 56 years of the home include two sons, Woodrow Gamble of Alcolu and Jimmy J. Gamble of the home; five daughters, Victoria McCoy and her husband, Allen, of Forestville, Md., Dorothy White and her husband, Glenn, of Mitchellville, Md., Rebecca Wilson of Scranton, Rachel Muldrow of Seabook, Md., and Mary Lee Gamble of Manning; two sisters, Jessie Burgess and Oveda McFadden of Lake City; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Isaac Gamble; a daughter, Stella Gamble; three brothers, Jenkins Gamble, Harrison Gamble, and the Rev. John Gamble; and a sister, Eva Fulton.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John AME Church in the Workman community of Kingstree with the Rev. B.L. Green, pastor, officiating.

Men of the church served as pallbearers.

Women of the church served as floral bearers.

Betty L. Foster
Betty Lee Foster, 79, widow of George H. Foster, died Friday, December 13, 2002, in Providence Hospital in Columbia.

Born Feb. 19, 1923, in Monkton, Md., she was the daughter of the late Robert M. Lee and the late Lottie Troyer Lee. She was a retired secretary-bookkeeper for Robert E. Lee Construction, Inc. and was a member of Manning Second Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Nancy L. Foster of Manning; a brother, Clifton M. Lee of Seminole, Fla.; a granddaughter, Heidi Ruehl of Spartanburg; a grandson, Howell Ruehl of Jacksonville, Fla.; two nephews and a niece.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday in Stephens Funeral Home Chapel in Manning with the Rev. Phares E. “Pec” Chatham, III, officiating.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers included Bob Lamb, Brandon Tucker, John Land, Cal Land, Steve Boersema and Larry Williamson.

Honorary pallbearers included Rock Ouzts, Jack Morant, Jimmy Hipp, Burgess Sprott, Dr. Walter Cottingham, Dr. Vaughn Barnick, Keith Josey Jr., Ron Vega and Lee Dickson.

Memorials may be made to Clarendon County Animal Shelter, 1513 Doral Dr., Manning. S.C. 29102 or the American Heart Association, S.C. Office, P.O. Box 23128, Columbia, S.C. 29224-3128.

Lucretia J. Charles
Sumter - Lucretia Jane Charles, 41, died Wednesday, December 11, 2002, at Ashley Chase Apartments.

Born April 4, 1961, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Willie J. Charles and Mary J. Charles Singleton. She attended the public schools of Sumter County.

Survivors include three sons, Andre Charles and Tyrell Charles of Sumter and Kevin Charles of Texas; one daughter, Gelenda Charles of Sumter; four brothers, John Earl Farmer, Donald Lee Charles, Willie James Charles and Jimmy Charles of Sumter; three sisters, Willie Mae Laws and Geneva Pugh of Sumter, and Betty Pearson of Parkton, N.C.; and seven grandchildren.

Services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday in the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home with Elder Lawrence McElveen officiating.

Burial followed in Bradford Cemetery.

Michael R. Bryant
Michael Renee Bryant, 42, husband of Elizabeth Ann Rosenbaum Bryant, died Saturday, December 28, 2002, in Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.

Born Dec. 19, 1960, in Sumter, he was the son of Joe Hazel Bryant and Lillie Faye Hewett Edwards. He was a paramedic, member of Clarendon Church of God, volunteer Clarendon County firefighter, volunteer Deputy Sheriff of Clarendon County, and a member of the Clarendon County Rescue Squad.

Survivors besides his wife of Manning; father of Sumter; and mother of Manning; are two stepsons, Matthew Burke and Marke Burke of Manning; a brother, Jimmy Ray Bryant of Sumter; a sister, Cheryl Marie Bryant of Hartsville; two half-brothers, Chris Edwards and Joe Bryant Jr. of Sumter; two half-sisters, Angie Bryant of Sumter and Alicia Geddings of Paxville; two step-brothers, George Edwards of Manning and Bobby Edwards of Darlington; a step-sister, Cathy Carraway of Darlington; and eight grandchildren.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Ernest Sessions officiating.

Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were Ernie Mahoney, Richard Naugler, Sterling Price, Reese Welch, Donald Bailey and Darryl Walker.

Honorary pallbearers were the Clarendon County Fire and Rescue Department or Clarendon County EMS.

James Sabb Jr.
James “Piggie” Sabb Jr., 51, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at his home in Greenville.

Born Oct. 6, 1951, in Summerton, he was a son of the late James Sabb Sr. and Mary Johnson Sabb. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County and Greater St. Phillip R.U.M.E. Church. In 1969, he moved to New York City to find work. He later moved to Greenville, where he was employed as landscaper with Spc. Inc., until his health failed.

Survivors include a brother, Willie Green of Greenville; and two sisters, Rose L. Sabb, of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Carrie M. Barrett of Laurelton, N.Y.

Funeral services were Saturday at St. Phillip R.U.M.E. Church with the Rev. Warren E. Hatcher, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

King Funeral Home of Summerton was in charge of arrangements.

Deaundrick L. Nelson
Deaundrick “Nord” Leard Nelson, 26, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002.

Born Sept. 5, 1976, in Clarendon County, he was a son of Samuel L. Nelson and Mary L. Riley Nelson. He attended Clarendon County public schools. In his youth, he joined Antioch UME Church in Rimini.

Survivors besides his parents include two sisters, Sharice Nelson and Shaila Nelson of the home; and his maternal grandfather, Louis Riley of Pinewood. He was preceded in death by a brother, Derrick Nelson; and his grandmothers, Marie Riley, Sylvia Rogers and Sylvie Lawson.

Funeral services were Saturday at Antioch UME Church, Rimini, with the Rev. Jonathan Smith, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Temoney, Elder J. Holland and the Rev. R. Boyd. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Nancy Lang
Nancy Lang, 43, died Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at her residence in New York.

Born July 20, 1959, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of Deloris Lang and the late Hardy Carter Sr. She attended the elementary schools of Clarendon County and graduated from Edgewood High School in Atco, N.J.

Survivors include her mother of Summerton; five sons, Mario Brown and his wife, Kelly, and Jonathan Lang of New York and Rodney Brown and his wife, Ayana, and Ricky Brown of Mesa, Ariz., and Ramone Brown of Camden, N.J.; two daughters, Tawana Lang of Bronx, N.Y., and Tomeka Brown of New Castle, Del.; four brothers, Ricky Land, Emanuel Lang and his wife, Ella, Wayne Lang, and Hardy Carter Jr. of New York; six sisters, Garnell Berkley and her husband, Carlton Sr., and Tonya Lang of Bronx, Lila Carter, Runnett Carter, Ellen Lemon and Antionette Carter of New York; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service was Friday at the Summerton Funeral Service Chapel, Summerton, with the Rev. W.J. Chandler officiating, assisted by Minister Jacob Rhames.

Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton was in charge of arrangements.

Ollie W. Jones
Ollie Ruth Watson Jones, 97, widow of August Jones, died Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at Lake Marion Nursing Facility.

Born May 25, 1905, in the Privateer section of Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Willie and Eliza K. Watson. She attended Sumter County public schools. In her youth, she was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. In 1949, she joined Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church. She was employed by Edmunds High School for a number of years and later did domestic work before retiring.

Survivors include a daughter, Viola J. Jones and her husband, George W. Jones, of Sumter; an adopted grandson, Ronald Jones of Sumter; a sister-in-law, Patsy Watson of Sumter; three nephews, James Watson, John Thomas Griffin and James Watson of Sumter; and three nieces, Catherine Odom, Cathy Atkins and Mary Ann Taylor of Sumter.

She was preceded in death by eight siblings.

Funeral services were Saturday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church with Marion H. Newton, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Bradford Cemetery.

Sumter Funeral Service Inc. of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Robert Collins
Robert Collins, 45, husband of Annie Dell Samuels Collins, died Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at Roper-Berkley Day Hospital in Moncks Corner.

Born Sept. 25, 1957, in Williamsburg County, he was a son of Robert J. Eady and the late Clara Bell Collins Woods and stepson of the late Sam Robert Woods. He attended Williamsburg County public schools and was a 1976 graduate of C.E. Murray High School. In his youth he joined St. James Baptist Church, where he served on the gospel choir. He was employed as a supervisor at the Georgia Pacific Corporation Chemical Division in Russelville.

Survivors besides his wife of the home and father of Baltimore include three sons, Quentin J. Collins, Cedric L. Collins and Robert J. Collins of Manning; two daughters, Charlene Denise Samuels of Sumter and Telza C. Collins of Manning; four brothers, Samuel Miller Jr. and his wife, Barbara, of Andrews, Captain Lawrence Miller and his wife, Angelica, of Columbia, Eric Woods of Goose Creek and Jerry Woods of Salters; two sisters, Carrie Cooper and Dorothy China of Greeleyville; and a grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a stepson, Preston Lamont Samuels.

Funeral services were Saturday at St. James Baptist Church, with the Rev Albert Rose, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Fred Snider and Harry Robinson. Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

The 1976 Class of C.E. Murray High School served as pallbearers.
