Ford Mortuary Services has charge. Visitation, 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, at Ford Chapel AME Zion Church. Mrs. Smith, the wife of Jesse Smith Jr., also leaves two daughters, Theresa James of Chicago and Angelique Smith of Memphis; two sons, Kenneth Gearring and Berlmon Manley Jr., both of Memphis; three sisters, Alma Jean Smith of Memphis, Susie Pearl Buggs of Grand Rapids, MI, and Francis Gearring of Memphis; a brother, Cornell Monger of Memphis, 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

RICHARD WATTS SMITH 79, of Cordova, died Monday, June 27, 2005. Funeral Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Memorial Park Funeral Home with Burial in Memorial Park cemetery. R.W. was retired President and Chairman of the Board of City Finance Company and AIC Financial Services, Subsidiaries of Leucadia National Corporation in New York City where he began in 1954. He was a graduate of Southwestern University in Memphis, and Vanderbilt Law School in Nashville. He was President of the Vanderbilt Law Review and served on The Board of Directors with American Investment Bank in Salt Lake City, UT. he was a World War II Navy Veteran and former Elder of East Frayser Church of Christ. He leaves his wife Edith McCoy Smith, a son, Shane Smith and granddaughter, Brittany Smith of his home; 3 daughters, Linda Becker of Cordova, Melanie Schewe of Bartlett, and Laura Mayfield of Nashville; 2 brothers, James Dempsey Smith of Lake Como, FL, and Michael Smith of Memphis; 2 sisters, Virginia Moore of Lake Como, MS, and Joyce Gray of Bartlett; 4 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren.

PAULA BATES SOUFFLE, 58, of St. Ann, Mo., formerly of Memphis, passed peacefully into the presence of her Lord, Jesus Christ in her home on June 27, 2005 after a long illness. Paula is survived by her husband of 32 years, Dion, her daughter, Kara Steele and two grandchildren, Amber and Jacob Steele of Valparaiso, IN, her sisters, Glenda Sperry of Swannanoa, NC, Donna Weatherford of Olive Branch, MS and Betty Moody of Nashville, and her brother, Keith Bates of Bartlett. Services will be held at 10 a.m. on June 30th at the Alexander Funeral Home in St. Ann, MO.

DR. RUFUS BROWN, 73, of Germantown, died Saturday, June 18, 2005, at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis. He was born May 14, 1932, in Chickasaw County to the late James Burks Brown and Etoyle Box Brown. He was a retired Genera Surgeon at St. Francis Hospital and currently Chief Medical Officer at the Department of Defense with Military Entrance Processing Service. He was a Methodist and a veteran of the Korean War. Survivors include his wife Betty Gail Holland Brown of Germantown, 2 sons, Kenneth Burks Brown of Texas and Timothy Milton Brown of Pontotoc, MS., 2 daughters, Patty Brown of Pontotoc, MS. and Nancy White of Savannah, TN., 1 step-daughter, Jane Kissinger of Memphis, 9 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Marilyn Kay Brown.
