Davis, Robert Arlington

Robert Arlington Davis (Dave) was born September 10, 1933, in Washington, DC to the late Robert Arlington, Sr. and Mamie Campbell Davis. He peacefully departed this life on Saturday, May 10, 2014, at Bayhealth Memorial Hospital in Milford, DE.

Robert received his early education in the Washington, DC public school system. Later, he enlisted into the United States Air Force and was stationed in various locations, such as, the Base in Geneva, New York; Madison, Wisconsin and Anchorage, Alaska. While on assignment at Dover Air Force Base, Robert met and married the love of his life, Claretta M. Hazzard. Upon graduating from Delaware State College (Now University) he received the Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. Robert was employed by the Public Housing Administration for two years as an Auditor, and an Agent for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for 32 years. While employed by the IRS, Robert received the "Equal Opportunity Award" and several Special Achievement Awards. Robert retired from the IRS in 1989. After retiring, he established a Payroll and Tax business (P&T; Service). Robert was an Enrolled Agent duly authorized to practice before the IRS, and a member of the Maryland Society of Accountants.

Robert was a faithful member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Lincoln, Delaware for 50 plus years and used his talent to further the kingdom of God. He was a Certified Lay Speaker, served as the Church Treasurer for 40 years, taught Sunday School, sang in several choirs: the Senior/Chancel choir, the Gospel Choir and the Men's choir. He participated in the United Methodist Men's organization; and with his wife, organized a Couples for Christ Ministry at Wesley Chapel. Robert's favorite scripture was James 2:17 "Faith without works is dead."

Robert was very active in the community. For many years he volunteered as a coach for the Milford Little League Basketball and Baseball Programs. Robert was the first African American to serve on the Milford School Board, and remained in this position for 15 years. Robert also served as Treasurer for the Robert A. Young Education Scholarship. Robert was truly a pioneer and as such he established the first Slaughter Neck Recreation Program. The program grew and became the hot spot for many of the youth of Slaughter Neck and the surrounding communities. The Recreation Program provided sock hops, movies and popcorn, beach trips and Red Cross swimming lessons. Robert organized the first Boy Scout troop in Slaughter Neck and had a passion for working with young people.

Robert believed in helping his fellow man. He assisted several people in Slaughter Neck with purchasing their homes, preparing for job examinations, and applying for college. Robert enjoyed spending quality time with his family and organized yearly family camping trips, cruises, and amusement park visits. Robert's hobbies included golfing, traveling, and exercising.

Robert leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 59 years, Claretta; five children: E. Denise Coates of Lincoln, DE, Robert L. Davis, Sr. (Glenn) of Elkton, MD, Pamella A. Taylor (Michael) of Milford, DE, Dr. Orlando R. Davis of Baltimore, MD, and Beverly A. Harris (Terrie) of Laurel, MD; 2 Brothers: Richard Davis of Washington, DC and Raymond Davis (Diane) of Eloy, Arizona; 2 sisters: Mollie Smith of Seat Pleasant, MD and Cornette Polk (Curtis) of Charlotte, NC; one brother-in-law, Granville Hazzard, Sr. of Lincoln, DE; three sister- in-laws: Cleora Wright of Bridgeville, DE, Irene Hazzard and Betty Hazard of Lincoln, DE; one God daughter, Jacqueline C. Young; 10 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandson, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A funeral service will be 1:00 Monday afternoon, May 19, 2014 at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, 23115 Slaughter Neck Road, Lincoln, DE 19960. There will be a viewing at the church on Monday from 11:00 to 1:00. Burial will be in Old Hickory Cemetery, Lincoln, In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, 422 S. Governors Avenue, Dover, DE 19904.

Pippin, Sr., James W.

Army

James W. Pippin, Sr. passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2014 in his home surrounded by his loving family. He was 90.

James was born on June 25, 1923 in Wilmington, Delaware, son of the late George W. and Sarah Helen Marvel Pippin.

He served his country proudly in the U.S. Army during WWII serving in the 104th Infantry Division and 414 Infantry. After serving in the military, he began his working career as a farmer with his brother. James then served as service station manager for the Army Air Force Exchange Service from where retired.

His hobbies included RV traveling, yardwork, hunting and archery.

He was a member of the VFW Post 8801.

Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his granddaughter Shelly Lynn Pippin.

James is survived by his loving wife of 66 years Jeannette West Pippin, two sons James W. Pippin, Jr. (Jane) of Felton, Millard Wayne Pippin (Pamela) of Viola, two daughters Janice A. Burritt (Rick) of Smyrna and Linda K. Jobe (Sonny) of Center Point, WV, a brother George M. Pippin Sr. (Dorothy) of Wyoming, 10 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and his beloved dog Heidi.

Service will be 4:00 p.m. Sunday, May 18, 2014 at the Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, where friends may gather two hours earlier.

Burial with military honors will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 19 in the family plot in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden.

Haas, Woodrow Woody

Woodrow "Woody" . Haas, 85, of North State Street, Dover, passed away Friday June 28, 2002 at his home in Dover.

He was born on May 13, 1917 in Dover, DE to William and Martha (Yoraschek) Haas.

He was a member of Wyoming United Metodist Church, Delaware Farm Bureau, Camden/Wyoming Lions Club, and the Odd Fellows. He was a Dairy Farmer west of Wyoming for many years. He is preceded in death by his wife Martha Haas and his Brother Charles Haas.

He is survived by Daughter, Nancy H. Valeski of Camden/Wyoming, DE. Brother, Edward Haas of, FL. Sister, Evelyn Thompson of, PA. Grand child, Chris Valeski, Grand child, Megan Valeski.

Remembrance Services will be held Sat. 07/06/2002 12:00 noon at Wyoming United Metodist in Wyoming, DE Burial will be at the Odd Fellows Cemetery Camden, DE

Friends may also call Sat. 07/06/2002 11:00 AM till time of the service at the Wyoming United Metodist.

Langrall, Jane B.

Jane B. Langrall, 88, of Milford, DE, formerly of Church Creek, MD, passed away on Wednesday, May 14 2014, with her family by her side. She was born on October 17, 1925 in Whiteville, North Carolina to the late Henry V. and Jennie Fripp Batten.

Jane graduated from Bartlett High School in Tennessee class of 1943. On August 6, 1944, she married the late William J. Langrall at the Zion United Methodist Church in Cambridge; he passed away on May 3, 2008. In 1981 she received her Bachelor’s in Nursing from Salisbury State College. After she received her bachelor’s degree she was employed by the state of Maryland as a home health care provider for Dorchester County. Mrs. Langrall was a seamstress and a home decorator. She was an avid bridge player and a member of the American Contract Bridge League since 2000. Jane was a member of the Zion United Methodist Church and active in Sunday School. She was the past president and secretary of the Cambridge Women’s Club and was a member of the Eunice Sluyter circle. Mrs. Langrall enjoyed square dancing, and was a member of the Choptank Spinners and was an animal lover. Jane was a devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother and mother in law.

Mrs. Langrall is survived by a daughter Alison L. Romano and husband Dominic of Milford, DE, four sons William R. Langrall and wife Pamela of Ft. Payne, AL, Alan B. Langrall and wife Cynthia of Normal, IL, J. Douglas Langrall and wife Teri of Cambridge and David S. Langrall of Cambridge, eleven grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, a brother Kenneth F. Batten and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and her husband she is preceded in death by a brother Henry V. Batten.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A with Rev. William Davis officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery near Hurlock. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Zion United Methodist Church, 612 Locust St., Cambridge, MD 21613. Arrangements are in the care of Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.

Loucks, Joan Helen

Joan Helen Loucks, of Dover, Delaware, passed away on May 11, 2014, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was 78 years old. Joan was born on August 21, 1935, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of the late William and Maietta Taylor, and was preceded in death by her husband, James Loucks.

Joan worked for many years as a secretary for Edgecomb Metals. She enjoyed traveling all over the country with her husband, Jim. She loved entertaining, and was very much a people person. Joan was the “go to” person when a party or event needed planning. She spent most of her time surrounded by family and friends, but also enjoyed quiet time reading and gardening. Joan was a leader and member of many organizations and clubs. She and Jim were members of the Army Wolf Pack, and the local Welcome Wagon.

Joan is survived by her sister, Maietta Guida; niece, Cheryl Wright; nephew, Michael Guida Jr; great-nieces, Taylor Carpenter and Kati Guida; and great-great niece Mackenzie. She also leaves behind her step-children, Steve Loucks, Teresa Friel, and Cheryl Loucks; step granddaughter, Jenny Smeltzer; and step great-grandchildren Tylar and Clea.

A funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, May 20, 2014, at Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, DE. Friends may call one hour prior.

Waters, Margaret Jean

Margaret Jean Waters, 81, of Lincoln, Delaware went to be with the Lord on May 12, 2014, at Bayhealth Kent General Hospital surrounded by her family. She was born April 16, 1933, in Horntown, VA, the daughter of the late Hallie and Julious Hope. Margaret received her High School Diploma from Mary N. Smith High School in Accomac, Virginia. She had various occupations throughout her younger years that allowed her to be a full time mother to her children. She was a faithful member of Welcome Full Gospel Holiness Church since 1967.

Margaret Leaves to cherish her memory: Six biological children Gary Hope of Lincoln; DE, Israel "Tommy" (Pamela) of Harrington, DE; Wayne Waters of Lincoln, DE; Emerson Waters (Belinda) of Clover, South Carolina; Jerrod Waters of Milton, DE. Adoptive Daughter Eyvonne Foolks (Nathan). Margaret was preceded in death by her daughter Debra Waters of Magnolia, DE (left to cherish Debra's memories, husband Herbert Waters); and Sixteen (16) grandchildren and seven (7) great-grandchildren.

She has one remaining sibling, Julia Dickerson (Thomas) of Frederica, DE. Siblings preceding her death were: Brothers: Wilson Hope (left to cherish Wilson's memories, wife Madeline); Kendall Hope; Preston Hope; and Sisters: Mary Townsend and Violet Crapper.

She also leaves to cherish her memories a host of special friend that are too many to name.

Funeral Services will be held Sunday May 18, 2014 at Noon at Welcome Full Gospel Holiness Church: 8426 Brick Granary Road Lincoln, DE 19960. There will be a viewing at the church from 11:00 to Noon on Sunday.

Badell, George Henu

George Henu Badell of Dover died Wednesday, January 7, 2004, at The University of Maryland Medical Center where he was waiting for liver and kidney transplants. He was 64 years old.

His beloved wife Barbara preceded him in death on September 22, 2002. They were married on September 2, 1961, in Millington, Maryland. They were later sealed for time and all eternity in the Logan Temple on November 4, 1964.

Mr. Badell was born March 1, 1939, in LaPorte, Indiana to the late Joab and Martha Azziz Badell. As a young man, he served in the United States Air Force at Dover Air Force Base when he met his beloved wife. Early in their marriage he worked for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad. He started his career with Sears and Roebuck in Indiana in 1966. Mr. Badell moved to Dover in 1968. In 1997 he retired from Sears after 31 years as a Service Technician. Skills that he acquired through working for Sears were put to good use. He was always willing to help someone with their TV or appliances.

Mr. Badell has been a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints since March 2, 1963. He served as Branch President in Dover from September of 1971 until March of 1972 when he was called as the Bishop. He served as Bishop from March of 1972 until his release in November of 1975. He also served with dedication and commitment in many leadership positions in the ward and stake as a member of the Stake High Council, Stake Executive Secretary, Ward Clerk, Financial Clerk and Ward and Stake Missionary.

He obtained his Ham Radio Operators License and was a member of the Kent County Amateur Radio Club. He enjoyed the friendship and camaraderie he felt with fellow club members and employees from Sears. Mr. Badell contributed to the Camden Wyoming Little League and served many years as a coach, umpire and on the Board of Directors. Mr. Badell was an avid spectator and enjoyed attending Caesar Rodney High School Basketball games. Except for when he was enlisted to keep score for Coach Savage, he often shared his opinion with the referees. He greatly enjoyed attending the Slam Dunk to the Beach Tournament. In later years, he drove many of the Caesar Rodney sports teams for Dawson's Bus Service.

George was always actively engaged in something in the community. Some may remember that he DJ'd school dances helping band boosters etc. He loved to watch his children participate in sports and other activities and encouraged them to strive to be the best at whatever they undertook. He was dedicated to his family. He inspired pride in the family name and expected integrity in his children. He has taken great joy in all of his children's accomplishments and has cherished his grandchildren.

He is survived by: Nathan and his wife Jill of Camden, DE; George David of Culpeper, VA; Matthew and his wife Ratry of Provo, UT; Jason of Huntington Beach, CA; Natalie of Bear, DE; three granddaughters, Alexandra and Sophia Badell of Camden and Jasmine Badell of Provo; a brother, Douglas and his wife Jan of Plymouth, IN; a sister, Anna May and her husband Jack of Palm Desert, CA.

Funeral services will be held Monday, January 12, 2004, 11 AM at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 237 Lebanon Road, Dover. Friends may visit Sunday, January 11, 2004, from 6-9 PM at the Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Rd (Rt. 10). There will also be a viewing one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Camden, DE.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions to the Camden Wyoming Little League at PO Box 1, Camden, DE 19934 or to the Caesar Rodney High School Basketball Boosters, 239 Old North Road, Camden, DE 19934.
