Thomas J. McLaughlin

Age 90, of Wilmington, DE, passed away at Christiana Hospital on Sunday, July 3, 2011.

Born in Wilmington, Thomas was the son of the late Joseph and Florence (Farmar) McLaughlin. He was a graduate of Christ Our King Grade School and P.S. DuPont High School. He served his country proudly during two tours of duty in the US Navy during World War II on the USS Santee and the Korean War. He worked as a machinist for Penn Railroad and Amtrak for 43 years until his retirement in 1982. He was a life member of Christ Our King Church and the Holy Name Society. Other memberships included the Knights of Columbus, Christopher Council and the BPOE Lodge #307. He volunteered as a baseball coach for the Christ Our King baseball team.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marjorie H. (Shortt) McLaughlin; his daughters and sons-in-law, Margie and John Tucker of Wilmington, Eileen and Bruce Vavala of Dewey Beach, and Anne McLaughlin of Wilmington; his sons, Thomas "TJ" McLaughlin, Jr. of Wilmington and Dewey Beach, Brian McLaughlin and his wife, Suzanne of Landenberg, PA, and Mark McLaughlin of Wilmington. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Shannon, Megan, Krissy, Joey and Ryan; three great grandchildren, Jack, Zoe and Sadie; his brothers, James, Willard and Gene McLaughlin; and his sister, Theresa Russell.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, July 8th at 11 AM at Christ Our King Church, 28th and Madison Streets, Wilmington, where friends and family are invited to attend visitation after 9:30 AM. Interment will be private at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Christ Our King Church, 2810 N. Monroe Street, Wilmington, DE 19802.

Sinclair, Addie Margaret

Addie Margaret Sinclair went home to be with the Lord on July 5, 2011. She was 81. Mrs. Sinclair was born July 6, 1929 in Pennsgrove, New Jersey, and grew up in Minquadale, Delaware. She was the daughter of the late William and Rebecca (Whittington) Gordon.

Addie met her husband Jim in the choir of Minquadale Methodist Church, where they were later married. In addition to being a full time homemaker most of her life, she also enjoyed spending time with her family, camping, and attending gospel music concerts.

After raising five children, Addie continued to nurture and care for her eight grandchildren. She also showed her love of children by providing child care for several families in the area.

Mrs. Sinclair is survived by her husband of 63 years, James H. Sinclair, three brothers, John Gordon of Millsboro DE, Robert Gordon of Chestertown MD, and William Gordon of Miami FL. She is also survived by two sons, James E. Sinclair of Milford DE, and Dennis Sinclair of Felton DE; three daughters, Barbara Bennett of Milford DE, Debbie Cobourn of Dover DE, and Cindy Pangburn of Clayton, DE; eight grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 9, 2011 with viewing beginning at 11 a.m. at Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming. Burial will follow in Ridgely Cemetery, Ridgely, Maryland.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to The Delaware Association for the Blind, 800 N. West St. #1 Wilmington, DE 19801.

Conaway, A Martin

A. Martin Conaway, 81, of Millsboro passed away peacefully in the care of his daughter, Sheredia in Atlanta, GA on July 3, 2011. Born in Millsboro on June 5, 1930, he was the son of the late Paul Andrews Conaway and Annie V. Wiggins. He was a member of Dickerson Chapel, A.M.E. Church, and was a veteran of the Korean War era, having served in the US Army. He was a member of the Prince Hall Masonic Temple, as well. In addition to his parents, he was preceded by his wife of 52 years, Betty Louise Conaway, in 2010, and a sister: Evelyn Conaway. He is survived by his daughter, Sheridia Langhorne, of Riverdale, GA and his siblings: James Robert Conaway, and his wife Barbara, of Upper Marlboro, MD; Ernest B. Conaway, of Ft. Washington, MD; and his sister: Mabel Conaway, of Millsboro. He is also survived by two brothers-in-law: Donald B. Short, and his companion, Colette, of Bethesda, MD; and Bruce Short, of Philadelphia, PA and his two grand-children: Katryna Langhorne, of New York, NY and Lauren Langhorne, of Riverdale, GA. A time of visitation will be held beginning at 10:30 AM on Friday, July 8 at Dickerson Chapel A.M.E. on Rt. 113 in Millsboro and a Celebration of his life and Going Home service will be held at 11:30. Interment follows at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, where Military Honors will be conferred. Floral tributes are welcomed by the Church and the family.

Forrest Vandergrift "Spook" Jacobs

Of Milford, passed away Friday, February 18, 2011 at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford. He was 85.

Mr. Jacobs was born on November 4, 1925 in Cheswold, son of the late Edwin F. and Norma C. (Willey) Jacobs.

He graduated from Salem High School, Salem, New Jersey in 1943. Immediately after graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army where he served as a Sergeant during World War II.

Upon return from his tour of duty, Mr. Jacobs played professional baseball for 17 seasons, playing for the Philadelphia Athletics, the Kansas City Athletics, the Pittsburgh Pirates and several minor league clubs in Cuba and Panama. He was a speedy second baseman, known for his aggressive style on the base paths and unique hitting style, which earned him the nickname "Spook". On opening day 1954, Spook had four base hits in his first four major league at bats. He was a superb contact hitter, striking out only 4% of his total plate appearances.

He is a member of seven Sports Hall of Fames - Delaware Baseball, Columbus Ohio, Cuban Baseball, Eastern Shore, Delaware, South Jersey and Salem County (NJ).

After his baseball career ended, Spook and his wife Bobbie settled in Milford where they owned and operated the Milford Bus Center then Mr. Donut/Donut Connection over a span of 42 years before retiring.

One of his proudest achievements was when his personal stamp collection was featured in 2008 at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.

Mr. Jacobs was a member of the Milford Lions Club, a long time member of the former Milford Kiwanis Club, a member of the Blue Hen VFW Post #6483 in Milford, the Milford Rotary Club, where he organized the annual Sports Banquet for 11 years, the American Legion Post #3 in Milford, and the Philadelphia Athletics Historical Society.

Spook also coached baseball at Del Tech and the Milford Little League.

He was a devoted member of the Avenue United Methodist Church in Milford.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bobbie Jacobs in 2010, a son Tommy Jacobs, a granddaughter, Dominique Nicole Jacobs and a brother, Edwin Jacobs.

He is survived by a son, Robert Forrest Jacobs; a granddaughter, Ashley Monique Jacobs of El Paso, TX; a great grandson, Thomas Vincent Jacobs Wesley of El Paso; a sister-in-law, Shirley Orren of Abilene, TX and several cousins, nephews and nieces.

Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, February 25, 2011 at the Avenue United Methodist Church, 20 N. Church St, Milford.

Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at the church.

Burial will follow in the Milford Community Cemetery on Route 113.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions to Avenue United Methodist Church, 20 N. Church St, Milford, DE, 19963 or to Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE, 19963.

Brusewitz, Lura Mae Cook

Lura Mae Cook Brusewitz, 94, Dover, passed away Wednesday April 20, 2011 at Silver Lake Nursing Home Dover.

She was born on June 23, 1916 in Covington, Tennessee to the late Walter and Maude Buttler Tidwell.

She was a member of Member of Christ Memorial Baptist Church.

She loved playing Bingo at the Dover elks Lodge.

She worked for Lois' Bar and in food service at the Carroll's corner Drug Fair and at the Townsend Building in Dover.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow Brusewitz, her brothers, Ed and Malcolm Tidwell, a sister, Grace Tidwell, a son, James cook, a daughter in law Bunny Cook and a daughter, Betsy Green of Florida.

She is survived by Sons and daughter in laws, Gene Cook of Slaughter Beach, De. Jerry and Phyllis Cook of Magnolia, Delaware, Don and Linda Linder of, Kentucky, A Daughter, Nan and her husband Ralph Miller of Miller of, California., Daughter in Law, Shirley Perez of Cumberland, Md. Brother, Jeff and his wife Ann Tidwell of Tennessee.

And several grand children nd great grand children.

Friends may call on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at 10 am in the Trader Funeral Home Inc., 12 Lotus St., Dover, Del. 19901.

A remembrance services will be at 11 am in the funeral home.

Burial will be at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden, Delaware

Johnson, Elizabeth M.

Elizabeth M. Johnson, "Betty", 66, of Millsboro, and formerly of Aston, PA passed away at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC.

Born in Chester, PA on March 21, 1945, she was the daughter of the late Dennis and Martha Ellen Taylor O'Brien.

She was a retired jet fabricator for the Avtex Corporation, making fiberglass fibers.

Her beloved husband, Richard, whom she married at her sister's home on Oct. 4, 1969 was her main hobby and the center of her life.

She was very family oriented, a very honest, caring person with a sweet, kind, gentle and generous manner.

She loved fishing, crabbing, cooking and was a GREAT cook! In addition to her husband, she is survived by two children: Denise Stansmore, and her husband Colin, of Millsboro; and Richard Johnson, Jr., of Millsboro.

She has two sisters: Marge Downey and Martha Manning.

She is also survived by many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.

She also leaves behind her beloved feline friends, Czar and Princess.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Bea Miller and a brother, Dennis O'Brien and a special feline friend, Gizmo.

A special time is set aside for friends to call at the Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington St. Millsboro, DE on Thursday, April 21 at 6:00 PM to celebrate her life and share memories.

Interment arrangements are private.
