Bessie V. Fani (Custer)

Age 83, of Newark, DE passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 19, 2005 surrounded by her family.

Mrs. Fani, a homemaker, was born in Somerset, PA. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Philip Fani; her sons, Ronald Roy Fani of Stoystown, PA and Richard Philip Fani of Hagerstown, MD; her daughter, Diane Romesberg of Newark, DE; seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 25th at 11:30 AM at Mealey Funeral Home, Limestone and Milltown Roads, Wilmington, DE, where friend are invited to call after 10:30 AM. Interment will be at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, DE.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Bessie's name to a charity of your choice.

MacFarland Sr., James M.

James M. MacFarland Sr., age 76, of Frederica, DE, died Monday April 1, 2002, at the Bayhealth - Kent General Hospital.

Mr. MacFarland Sr. was born in Philadelphia, PA to the late John George MacFarland and Mary B. Morrow MacFarland.

Mr. MacFarland worked for 28 years in the Civil Service of Dover Air Force Base as a welding and plating technician. He always went out of his way to help other people. His family remembers that during holidays, GI’s that worked in Mr. MacFarland’s shop that could not go home spent their holidays with his family.

Mr. MacFarland loved the outdoors. Every year he grew extra vegetables in his garden to share with friends and neighbors. He enjoyed animals, birds and walking in the woods, especially at the Church Camp Mardella where he volunteered to work with children.

Mr. MacFarland was a dedicated member of the Frederica First Baptist Church. He enjoyed reading the bible which he read cover to cover 38 times.

He will be remembered as a kind hearted and good natured person who was a loving father and grandfather and will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

He is also preceded in death by his wife of 56 years in January of 2001, Freda Marie MacFarland.

He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law James M. MacFarland, Jr. and his wife Sally of Frederica, Charles E. MacFarland of Frederica, his daughters and sons-in-law Bonnie C. Keller and her husband Larry, Sr. of Frederica, Donna L. Humphrey and her husband Gale of Frederica, his brothers and sisters-in-law Robert MacFarland and his wife Dorothy of Boulder, Colorado, David MacFarland, Sr. and his wife Rita of Ridgely, MD, grandchildren Kevin MacFarland and his wife Lisa, of Milford, Lisa MacFarland of Frederica, Sharon Dominguez and her husband Ramon of Laurel, MD, Amy M. Wyatt of Newark, Gary Humphrey Jr. of North Carolina, Autumn Dill and her husband Ted of Milford, Wayne Kelley of Panama City, FL, and Kyle Kelley of Bridgeville, 5 great grandchildren, Brea MacFarland, Mya MacFarland, Ariel Dill, Hunter Dill, and Raven Dill and many nieces and nephews.

Services will take place Saturday, April 6, 2002, at the Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Hwy., Harrington, at 1:00 PM. A visitation will take place Friday evening from 7 to 9 PM. The Rev. Sam Ingram from the Frederica First Baptist Church will be officiating. Internment will be at the Barratts Chapel Cemetery, Frederica.

Frederick J. Gallagher

Age 90, died Tuesday, September 24, 2002 at Christiana Hospital surrounded by his family.

Fred was a machinist and worked for Dravo Shipbuilding during WWII. He spent the rest of his career with DuPont, United Engineers, and retired from the University of Delaware in the late 1970’s.

Fred was a lifelong resident of Old New Castle. He was a member of the St. Peter’s R. C. Church his entire life. He was a 4th Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus Bishop Becker Council, and Charter Member of the New Castle Lions Club. He was very proud of the development of the Lions Sight Campaign. Fred also served as a commissioner for the New Castle Board of Water and Light during the 1970’s and 1980’s. He was a member of the New Castle Senate.

Fred was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Ann (Kirby) Gallagher who died in 1993. He is survived by his son, Frederick G. Gallagher and his wife Tish of New Castle; and his grandson Patrick J. Gallagher.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Peter’s the Apostle R. C. Church, 5th &Harmony; Sts., New Castle on Friday morning, September 27th at 10 a.m. Friends may call at the Krienen Funeral Home, 34 W. 6th St., New Castle from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday evening. Interment in the adjoining cemetery.

In lieu of flowers please make contributions to St. Peter’s Workforce, 521 Harmony St., New Castle, DE 19720.

Gaines, Russell Lowell

Russell Lowell Gaines of Bridgeville died at his home on Wednesday, July 13, 2005. He was 83 years old.

He was born in Columbia, DE on February 18, 1922, the son of the late William Jake Gaines and Hester Easter Games Gaines.

He received degrees of higher education from Hampton University and Tuskagee University. He was a retired teacher and businessman.

He is survived by a sister, Martha Stanley of Sharptown, MD and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Chauncey Gaines, Harold Gaines, Robert Gaines, Edgar Gaines, and Ronald Gaines, and a sister, Reba Gaines Kennedy.

Burial at Mt. Nebo Cemetery will be private.

In lieu of cards and flowers, donations can be made in his memory to Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church, Columbia, DE. Arrangements by Framptom Funeral Home, PA. Federalsburg.

LaBerge, Frances E.

Frances Elizabeth LaBerge of Smyrna, Delaware, died Thursday April 21, 2005 in Green Valley Pavilion, Smyrna.

She was 71.

Mrs. LaBerge was born December 20, 1933 in Wilmington, Delaware, the daughter of the late Jeffrey and Lillian Bailey Corti.

She worked as a nursing home attendant in Maine for several years before retirement.

She was a member of the Mamie C. Warren Center in Clayton, Delaware and enjoyed playing bingo.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Shinault.

She is survived by seven children, Theresa Coulston of Scarborough, Maine, Roger LaBerge Jr. of Smyrna, Charles LaBerge of Marydel, Maryland, Richard LaBerge of Smyrna, Patrick LaBerge of Dover, Delaware, Lillian Pedicord of Smyrna and Mark LaBerge of Clayton; 22 grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Monday April 25, 2005 at 11AM in St. Polycarp's Roman Catholic Church, 135 Ransom Lane Smyrna, Delaware.

Friends may call Sunday from 7 to 9PM in the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 South Main Street Smyrna, Delaware.

Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery Smyrna, Delaware.

Arrangements are by Faries Funeral Directors, Inc., 29 South Main Street Smyrna, Delaware.

Mabrey, Hazel Elzada

Hazel Elzada Mabrey of Clayton, Delaware, died at home Friday April 13, 2007.

She was 78.

Mrs. Mabrey was born September 17, 1928 in Clayton, the daughter of the late Walter and Hazel Townsend Conley.

She was a homemaker who enjoyed attending luncheons with her former classmates from Smyrna High School, the 3rd Wednesday of each month at the Wayside Inn in Smyrna.

Her hobbies included canning, yard sales, taking care of her flowers and especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mrs. Mabrey was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses Church in Smyrna.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Walter Jerry and a sister, Edna Caviins.

She is survived by her husband, Gilbert F. Mabrey; two sons, Gilbert L. Mabrey and his wife, Debbie of Clayton and David K. Mabrey and his wife, Amy of Clayton; a daughter, Diane E. Carson and her husband, Gary of Clayton; six grandchildren, Kevin, David, Marie, Chuck, Ashley and Eric and six great grandchildren, Zoe, Wesley, Justin, Madison, Joshua and Gavin.

Services will be Monday April 16, 2007 at 1PM in the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 South Main Street Smyrna, Delaware, where friends may call one hour prior to the services.

Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery Smyrna, Delaware.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to Delaware Hospice, 911 South DuPont Highway Dover, DE 19901.

Arrangements are by Faries Funeral Directors and Crematorium Inc., 29 South Main Street Smyrna, Delaware.
