Furness, Alice Swedberg

Alice Swedberg Furness passed away at the Methodist Country House, Greenville on November 20, 2010.

Alice was born on November 24, 1911 on Staten Island, NY, the daughter of the late Adolph and Elise (Berg) Swedberg and she was very proud of her Norwegian heritage. She attended secretarial school and worked as a secretary on Wall Street before her marriage to Peter Donald Furness, Sr. They resided in Newark, DE and Town Point, MD. Alice belonged to the Newark Country Club and enjoyed bridge, bowling, crossword puzzles and knitting. She was also a member of the St. Francis Junior Board and loved animals.

After 64 years of marriage, Peter D. Furness, Sr. died on June 1, 2000. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her siblings, John and William Swedberg and

Karen Sylvia Swedberg Winter.

Mrs. Furness is survived by her four children and their spouses, Peter D. Furness Jr. and Nan of Town Point, MD, Elise Furness Crowe and James of Hockessin, Virginia Furness Vaughan and William of Greenville and Susan Furness Lucey and Brian of Wilmington; her twelve grandchildren, Laura McNew, Dr. Peter D. Furness, III, Jennifer Simko, Cynthia Ortt, Susan Trentham, Brian Crowe, Alice Maccari, Michael Lucey, Stephen Lucey, Anne Lucey, Jeffrey Vaughan and Kristen Axtell; her twenty great-grandchildren, two step great-grandchildren and one great great-granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday evening November 27, 2010 at 6 PM at the MEALEY FUNERAL HOME, 2509 Limestone Road, where friends may call after 4 PM. A private burial will be held at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear. Kindly omit flowers and in lieu of them contributions may be made to the Delaware SPCA, 455 Stanton Christiana Road, Newark, DE 19713.

Helen M. (McVaugh) Knowles

Age 100, of Stanton, DE, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on Monday, September 20, 2010.

Helen was born in Hockessin, the daughter of the late Edith H. and John M. McVaugh, Sr. She worked at the old Delaware Hospital as a head cashier for several years and then as a homemaker. She enjoyed being around and having long talks with family and friends, Phillies baseball, reading, cooking, Florida, knitting, and sewing. All who knew Helen were amazed at the state of her mind, knowledge, and her ability to remember up until her passing. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, James M. Knowles; her sister, Esther E. Basher; her brother Charles P. McVaugh, Sr.; and her son-in-law, Walter R. Haigh, Sr.

Helen will be dearly missed by her daughter, Janet M. Haigh of Stanton; her grandsons, Walter Roger Haigh, Jr. and his wife, Cindy, of Landenberg, PA, and James W. Haigh of Stanton; her three great granddaughters, Shannon, Rachel and her fiancé Jamie, and Krista; and her great-great granddaughter, Reagan; her sisters, Josephine R. Deats of Smyrna and Edith H. Davis of Pike Creek; her brother, John M. McVaugh, Jr. and his wife, Phyllis, of Hockessin; and many other close relatives and friends.

Private family graveside services will be held on Friday, September 24, 2010, at 10:30 am at the Hockessin Friends Cemetery.

Dustin A. Astolfi

Age 38, of Greenville, DE, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, September 18, 2010. Dustin was born in Wilmington, DE, on February 29, 1972, son of David A. Astolfi and Sandra (Odell) Astolfi. Dustin was a graduate of the University of Delaware with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English, and a minor in Philosophy. He also completed the required coursework for the pre-professional Speech Pathology Program. He was fascinated with Russian history, Russian literature, and Russian artifacts. He wanted to learn Russian well enough to read Russian novelists in Russian. With well over the required number of credits needed to graduate, Dustin would have loved to have been a professional student. At some point, he hoped to return to academia for his Graduate Degree. Dustin was an avid reader of the English classics as well, and a self-professed "old gamer, " enjoying role playing video games and multi-player games online.

Dustin was employed at the Masonic Home of Delaware in Wilmington as the Certified Director of Activities, with a CNA Certification; he considered the residents and staff "family." He began his healthcare career at Advoserv in Bear as a Therapist and later moved on to Regal Heights Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in Wilmington as an Activities Assistant. He also worked with Autistic children as a Facilitator with the Son-Rise Program, volunteered at the Salvation Army as a Homework Tutor, volunteered with the Food Bank of Delaware in Newark as a packer and sorter, and volunteered at his son's school for classroom parties and school sponsored events when his work schedule would allow.

Dustin loved the beach. As a child he spent all his vacations at Ocean City, NJ, with extended family, and as an adult, he continued to spend long weekends and all his vacation time with his son, Joshua, at Ocean City. Dustin loved to swim in the ocean and walk along the breakers in the early morning and in the dark of night. His goal was to live on the beach and become a beach bum in his retirement.

Dustin is survived by his son, Joshua Aleksander, the "light of his life;" his mother, Sandy Astolfi; his sister, Cheri Astolfi; and his wife, Kimberly Astolfi. Above all, Dustin was a devoted father and a loving son.

Friends and family are invited to visitation on Saturday, September 25, between 12:30 PM and 1:00 PM, at Mealey Funeral Home, Limestone and Milltown Roads, Wilmington, where a Memorial Service will begin at 1:00 PM. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Joshua A. Astolfi Education Fund c/o Edward Jones, 724 Yorklyn Road, Ste. 325, Hockessin, DE 19707. Please make your checks payable to Edward Jones "Joshua A. Astolfi Education Fund" in the memo section of your check.

Thomas F. O'Donnell

Age 80, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 10th at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Elsmere.

Mr. O'Donnell was born in Wilmington, son of the late Thomas B. and Anne (Hollander) O'Donnell who passed away early in his life. He was raised by his aunts and uncles. He was a graduate of Salesianum School and the University of Delaware. He served his country proudly in the US Army during World War II. He worked at Hercules Corporation, retiring as marketing manager.

A Requiem Mass will be held on Monday, November 22nd at 11 AM at St. Patrick's Church, 15th and King Streets, Wilmington. Interment will follow at Cathedral Cemetery, Wilmington. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Little Sisters of the Poor, 185 Salem Church Road, Newark, DE 19713 or to St. Patrick's Church, 1414 King Street, Wilmington, DE 19801.

John E. Graham, Jr.

"BEEBOP"

Age 75, of Newark, DE passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 11, 2010 at the Veterans Medical Center.

Born in Wilmington, John was the son of the late Catherine (Lutz) and John E. Graham, Sr. He served his country proudly for 23 years in the US Air Force, working as an air traffic controller and retiring in 1975 as a master sergeant. He then worked in civil service for 13 years, retiring in June, 1990. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Roseanna Steele and a grandson, Daniel Wejrowski.

John will be dearly missed by his wife of 54 years, Eileen L. (Gibbs) Graham; three children; seven grandchildren; and his cousins, Clarke Jester and his wife, Patricia, and Joan Gaynor and her husband, Jack, all of Newark. Also surviving are Pat and Fred Wilhelme and godson, Frederick, of Upper Marlboro, MD; and many friends in the military community.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 19th at 11:30 AM at Mealey Funeral Home, Limestone and Milltown Roads, Wilmington, where friends are invited to visitation after 10:30 AM. Interment will follow at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to D.A.V., Dept. of Delaware, PO Box 407, Camden, DE 19934.

Remer, John H.

John Higgins Remer passed away peacefully with loving family by his side at home in Chadds Ford, PA on December 22 of natural causes. Born in Philadelphia on January 12, 1925, he was a real family man usually placing the interests of others ahead of his own. He is survived by his devoted wife Frances (Ketcham, Edmunds), two children, John Jr. and Elizabeth Kipp; three step children, Mabel Ketcham, Christine Ketcham La Monica, Helenor Ketcham; eight grandchildren; two great grandchildren; his brother David; several nieces and nephews.

A graduate of Westminster School '43 and Yale University '48, he also served as a Lieutenant in the US Navy during The Second World War in the South Pacific. He worked for Drexel and Co. in Philadelphia before joining Laird & Co.(later White Weld & Co.) as office manager in Wilmington, DE. A long standing director (1956-1996) of Teleflex Corp. in Limerick, PA he joined the firm in earnest in 1974 as Chief Financial Officer and was a Vice President until his retirement in 1996. He continued as an advisor until 2007.

An avid fly fisherman, John was a long time director of The Atlantic Salmon Federation, St. Andrews, NB, Canada where he and his wife Frankie enjoyed 40 wonderful summers along the St. Croix River. He was a director of The Bright Creek Park Association, Canadensis, PA, where he was a member for over 50 years. There the Remer Pool is a wonderful legacy to his devotion to angling and to his generosity in the conservation of wild lands for future generations.

John was a strong believer in education and especially in helping those less fortunate. He served on the board of Westminster School for several terms and established the Helen S. Remer Scholarship in memory of his mother. He further joined the board of Tabor Children's Services in 1980 and served as President for 21 years from 1985-2006.

John was also a compassionate man and as such served on the board of Delaware Hospice; was a founder and President of Hospice of Charlotte where he guided a group of devoted volunteers to form what has turned into a pivotal community service for many people in Charlotte County, NB, Canada.

His social club affiliations included the Wilmington Country Club, Merion Golf Club, Vicmead Hunt Club, Biderman Golf Club (charter member), and the Wilmington Club.

John, affectionately known as "Sid", will be remembered by friends and family as a gentleman with a mischievous sense of humor, steadfast loyalty, and an ability to listen and give counsel to those who needed an open ear. He will be missed and never forgotten.

The Remer family would like to especially thank the nurses and staff of Compassionate Care Hospice for their care and support.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to Hospice of Charlotte, Compassionate Care Hospice of DE Hospice, The Atlantic Salmon Federation, or the charity of your choice. A private service will be held followed by an open reception from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the Vicmead Hunt Club, Tuesday December 28.

Edith M. Bachman

Age 88, of Smyrna, DE, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, December 22, 2010 surrounded by her family.

Born in Wilmington, Edith was the daughter of the late John A. and Pearl (Clark) Hedrick. She was a 1940 graduate of Wilmington High School. During World War II, she worked for Bellanca Aircraft. She married Mark D. MacDonald who predeceased her in 1942. Her second husband, Edward F. Bachman, predeceased her 1992. She was also preceded in death by two sisters and a stepbrother.

She is survived by her daughters, Sue Lane and her husband, Donald of Newark, Mary McCanns of Dover, Laurie DiPersio and her husband, Franny of Marshallton, and Lydia Hoffman of Smyrna; her sons, Mark MacDonald and Edward Bachman, both of Smyrna. Also surviving are her stepbrother, Ed Hedrick and his wife JoAnn of Newark; 20 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren; and her beloved pet, Lovey.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 29th at 11:30 AM at Mealey Funeral Home, 2509 Limestone Road, Wilmington where friends and family are invited to visitation after 9:30 AM. Interment will follow at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Vitas Hospice, 100 Commerce Drive #302, Newark, DE 19713.

EMILY LIN

Age 78, of Newark, died July 5, 2010, in her home.

Born in Gulangyu, China, she was daughter of the late Yoong Ting and Anti Tan Lin. Ms. Lin excelled both in academics and athletics (track) and earned a Ph.D. degree in mathematics from Sun Yat-sen University. She later was a mathematics professor there. She and her family moved to Hong Kong in 1974, then immigrated to United States (Delaware) in 1978.

After arriving in United States, she became a proficient computer programmer and worked for Hercules for ten years. She then worked as a consultant before retirement. During her retirement, she was very active with the Chinese American Community Center and volunteer work. She traveled extensively both domestically and internationally. She also became an expert in Chinese craft and taught classes in this trade. She attended worship services at First Presbyterian Church of Newark. In addition, she was a cancer survivor (liver) for 12 years.

Ms. Lin is survived by her two sons, Jimmy and wife Angie of Hong Kong, John and wife May of CA; grandsons Ian and Cody (Jimmy); granddaughters Caitlyn and Allyson (John); brothers Stanley and wife Caroline of PA, Archie of DE; and sister Emma and husband Calvin of WA.

Memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 14, at 11 am at Wilmington First Assembly of God, 201 Hawthorne Drive, Wilmington, DE 19802 [Phone (302) 764-7877] with reception immediately following.
