Brown, George

FELTON - George Brown, of Felton, died Friday, July 30, 2010, at Silver Lake Center, Dover. He was 87.

Mr. Brown served his country proudly in the United States Navy for 4 years during WWII. When the Korean War broke out, he re-enlisted in the Navy and eventually retired from the Navy after 23 years, retiring in 1968, as an aviation electrician.

After the service, he worked in the US Post Office in Atlantic City until he retired in 1985.

Mr. Brown enjoyed watching the Red Sox play on TV. He was a devoted family man who lived to take care of his family and wife of 65 years.

In addition to his parents, Michael and Katherine Brown, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rita Brown; daughter, Joyce E. Thompson; and son, George M. Brown.

He is survived by a son, Curtis S. Brown of Felton; son-in-law, Charles "Tom" Thompson Sr. of Chare City, Va.; daughter-in-law, Beverly Brown of Suffolk, Va.; grandchildren, Charles T. Thompson Jr., Larissa Brown, and Shara Brown; and great-grandchildren, Deme' and Courtney.

A Memorial Mass will be 10 a.m., Monday, Aug. 16, 2010, at the Dover Air Force Base Chapel. Interment will be at a later date at the Delaware Veterans Cemetery, Bear.

Arrangements are by the Melvin Funeral Home, Harrington.

Barbara Caulk, 65

CAMDEN-WYOMING - Barbara Caulk, of Camden-Wyoming, died April 1, 2010, at Bayhealth-Milford Memorial. She was 65. She was born in Farmington, to the late Harry and Elizabeth Biddle Sr.

Barbara Caulk was a wonderful housewife who was about to celebrate 50 years of marriage in July. Wally says if there was ever a perfect marriage, theirs was it. Their devotion for each other was phenomenal. She supported her husband throughout his years as State Representative. She gladly took all the phone calls, addressed all mailings and was there for anything that needed to be done.

For the past 25 years she was the Barratt's Chapel Deed Recording Secretary which she thoroughly enjoyed. Mrs. Caulk was very religious and attended church until her illness. She enjoyed watching the Trinity Broadcast and Christian programs everyday especially on Sunday. Her ministry was collecting quarters for missionary tracts. Over the years she collected thousands of dollars providing millions of missionary tracts, touching lives all over the world.

Mrs. Caulk was a loving wife, great supporter, good friend, mother, grandmother and was very proud to have a great-grandchild. She gave freely of herself to Wally and others. She was able to enjoy her dream home with her husband and companion dog. She will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Harry W. Biddle Jr., and Leonard B. Biddle.

She is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, G. "Wally" Caulk Jr. of Camden-Wyoming; son, Terry Caulk of Frederica; daughter, Shawn Moore of Felton; brother, Robert Biddle of Felton; sisters, Irene Hickman of Dover; grandchildren, Rebecca Daniels of Baltimore, Md., James Messick III of Dover, and Robert Messick of Felton; great-grandchild, Lyric Daniels of Baltimore, Md.; and her loving companion dog, Duke whom she loved dearly, and followed her everywhere she went.

Services will be 1 p.m., Tuesday, April 6, at Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Hwy., Harrington, where visitation will be two hours prior to the service. Interment will be in Barratts Chapel Cemetery.

Arrangements are by the Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Hwy., Harrington.

Samuel E. Mumford Jr.

HARRINGTON - Samuel E. Mumford Jr., of Harrington passed away, Wednesday, October 13, 2010 in Milford, Del. He was 64.

Samuel was born in Milford, Del. to the (Late) Samuel E and Beatrice Mumford.

Samuel worked as a mechanic at Walls Service Center in Milford. He worked on many cars from regular cars to stock cars including Scutch Kenton's stock car. He enjoyed Nascar and the stock car races. He and his brother owned a few stock cars and raced at Delmar Track. Mr. Mumford was a very quiet man but a very giving person, if anyone needed help he was there to help them. He had a lot of friends and will be missed. Once Mr. Mumford got to know you, you were a friend for life. His pride and joy were not only his children but his grandson who he felt it was his duty to spoil. He also had a close relationship with his two nieces, Shelby and Heather.

He is survived by his son, Christopher Mumford of Bridgeville; daughter Kelly Mortan of Seaford; one grandchild; a brother, Johnny Mumford of Harrington; sister Nancy Birl of Oak Orchard.

Funeral Services will be held Oct. 19, 2010, at 1:00 p.m. at the Melvin Funeral Home, Harrington, DE. Visitation will be one hour prior. Interment will be in Hopkins Cemetery, Felton, Del.

Family requests donations made to the funeral home to help defray costs.

Arrangements are by the Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South Dupont Hwy., Harrington.

Gallo Sr., Emil

Emil Gallo Sr., of Harrington, died June 8, 2010, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was 86.

Mr. Gallo worked on the family farms and as a masonry contractor. He built many structures in his career spanning the entire Delmarva Peninsula.

Almost every town on this Peninsula has a building in it that he has helped construct. His friends and family said that Mr. Gallo was a hard working gentleman. He worked hard all week and twice as hard on the weekend to prepare for the projects the following week.

He was very driven and focused and very productive at building and farming. No matter what he accomplished, he always felt like he could have done more, and he was always fair, but firm.

Although Mr. Gallo worked hard all the time, he always made time for his family and children. Whether it was taking them on family vacations, or just playing ball with them, he made sure his family came first and foremost.

In what little spare time he had, Mr. Gallo did enjoy fishing and especially hunting. He leaves a legacy of hard work, honesty, and fairness to his children and will be deeply missed by his close family.

Mr. Gallo was an early and lifelong member of the St. Bernadette Catholic Church. He was also a charter member of the Andrewville Ruritan Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carmine and Theresa Gallo; daughter, Beverly G. Fitzgerald; granddaughter, Amanda L. Fitzgerald; grandson, Nicholas P. Fitzgerald; brothers, Ernest and Jesse Gallo; and sisters, Ida Luongo, Mildred Vockel, and Rose Gallo.

He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Ruth L. Gallo of Harrington; sons, Phillip R. Gallo of Frederica, Michael L. Gallo of Greenwood, and Emil G. Gallo Jr. of Greenwood; daughter, Sylvia A. Propes of Greenwood; brothers, Carmine Gallo of Harrington, and Anthony Gallo of Milford; 22 grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Bernadette Church building fund, 109 Dixon St., Harrington DE 19952.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m., Saturday, June 12, 2010, at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, Harrington. Interment will be in the Milford Community Cemetery.

Arrangements are by the Melvin Funeral Home, Harrington.

Gilbert Wendell Hall

MAGNOLIA - Gilbert Wendell Hall, 83, passed away Sunday, May 16, 2010 in the Milford Hospice Center, Milford. He was the son of the late Wendell H. and Birdella Hall.

Mr. Hall served his country proudly in the United States Navy during WWII and the Korean Conflict. He also served in the Naval Reserves for 20 years.

Mr. Hall worked as a truck driver for over 25 years, and drove for many outfits over the years, including A.J. Williams, and Mississippi Freight. He retired in 1989, after driving for Tri Gas & Oil.

In his spare time, he enjoyed crossword puzzles and reading the newspaper. His family was everything to him, and he enjoyed having his family around him. He was a people person, and he enjoyed visiting friends and having family and friends visit him. He will be greatly missed.

Mr. Hall was a member of the American Legion Post CKRT#7 of Harrington, Fleet Reserves, AARP, and the Harrington Senior Center.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Anna May, and a son, Lester Emory.

He is survived by his sons, Dale Hall and girlfriend Shelly Stanley of Felton, Michael Emory and girlfriend Gloria Mansfield of Felton; daughters and sons in law, Ginny and Rick Beard of Quilcene, Washington, Becky and Tony Kenton of Laurel; sister in laws, Emily Ann Havelow, Bobbie Ann Silva, Susan Russell and her husband Ronny; 34 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, May 20, 2010 at Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 S. DuPont Hwy., Harrington, DE 19952. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Legion Post #7, 17448 South DuPont Hwy., Harrington, DE. 19952, or to the Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.

Arrangements are by the Melvin Funeral Home, Harrington, DE.

Kachmar, Theodore J.

Theodore (Ted) J. Kachmar, "Poppy", 82, of Wilmington passed away on Saturday January 30, 2010 at Christiana Hospital surrounded by his family. Mr. Kachmar was born in Wilmington, the son of the late Anna (Tyratska) and Charles Kachmar. He was employed at the DuPont Company's Wilmington Shops for forty years as a precision machinist, retiring in 1983. Ted was a graduate of Brown Vocational and he received an American Legion Certificate of Schooling award in 1942 at Bancroft Junior High School.

He served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. He was wed to Eleanor Brewster on May 9, 1953 at St. Peter's in New Castle. Ted was a Cub Scout Committeeman and a longtime parishioner of St. Matthew's Church where he was one of the original Eucharist Ministers.

Ted had a fondness for 'big band' music and the pop crooners of the 40's and 50's. For many years, he also enjoyed summer vacations with his family at the New Jersey shore.

Ted will be dearly remembered as a humble, honest, caring, modest and meticulous man with a subtle wit and a lifelong healthy appetite for good food, especially Ukrainian cuisine, that belied his slim physique.

In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his siblings Michael, Stephen, John, Charles, Mary, Anna and Helen.?

Ted is survived by his wife of 56 years, Eleanor; his sons, Ted and his wife, Cheryl of Newark, Stephen M., of Wilmington, Joseph P. and his wife, Helen of Elkton, MD; his daughter, Marian E. Jackson and her husband, Donald of Wilmington and his grandchildren, Andrew, Alexandria and Lauren. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10:30 AM at St. Matthews Church, 901 E. Newport Pike, Woodcrest, where friends may call after 9:30 AM. Entombment will be in All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to either St. Matthews Church 3 Curtis Avenue, Wilmington, DE 19804 or the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, Grand Central Station, P.O. Box 4777, New York, NY 10163.
