Smith, Anne C.

Anne C. Smith of Kenton, DE passed away Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at her home after a brief battle with cancer.

She was 80.

Mrs. Smith was born February 2, 1930 in Laurel, DE the daughter of the late Joseph Horace Carmine and Flo Marie Culver Carmine.

She graduated from Laurel High School in 1948 and married Neal W. Smith in 1950. They were married for 47 years until his death in 1997.

During her marriage to Neal, they traveled extensively while Neal served in the Marine Corps. for 28 years. Upon his retirement, they bought a house in Kenton, DE.

She had lived in Kenton for 35 years.

Anne was a faithful member of the Kenton United Methodist Church. For many years, she served in various ways including the choir, the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee, and Vacation Bible School. Anne Smith loved the Lord!

She worked for 10 years at Sears in Dover and retired in 1985.

Anne and her husband bowled in a league for many years and she was a great cook. She looked forward to having her children and grandchildren come to visit often.

She is survived by her three children, Cheryl Alvord of Portland, ME, Sandra Johnson of Springfield, MA, and Rick Smith of Richmond, VA; a sister, Doris Hansen of Newark, DE; 5 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; and two nieces, Karen Garber and Kim Correll-Comeau.

Friends may call Tuesday, January 18, 2011 from 10 to 11am in Kenton United Methodist Church located on 74 W. Commerce St. in Kenton, DE. Funeral services will begin at 11am.

Burial will be privately held in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Laurel, DE.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Kenton United Methodist Church, PO Box 188, Kenton, DE 19955, or to Delaware Hospice, Delaware Hospice 911 South DuPont Highway Dover, DE 19904.

Newnum, Blain Keith

Blain Keith Newnum of Smyrna, DE, died on Sunday, January 9, 2011 at Kent General Hospital in Dover, DE.

He was 46.

Mr. Newnum was born on April 22, 1964 in Dover to the late Curtis and Betty Newnum.

Blain worked for the Department of Corrections for many years.

He was a member of the Eastern Shore Bluegrass Association which was founded by his late father, Curtis.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Nora Newnum.

He is survived by two brothers, Curtis Newnum of Florida and Randy Newnum of Arizona; six nieces and nephews; and two great nieces.

Services will be private.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Eastern Shore Bluegrass Association, care of Mrs. Vogt, 13875 Swan Town Creek Rd., Galena, MD 21635.

Bartosavage, Joanne M.

Joanne M. Bartosavage of Smyrna, DE passed away on Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford, DE.

Funeral services will be private.

Burris, Harriett C.

Harriett C. Burris of Rock Hall, MD, formerly of Smyrna, DE passed away on Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at Chestertown Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Chestertown, MD.

She was 90.

Mrs. Burris was born June 5, 1920 in Chestertown the daughter of the late Charles P. Coleman and Myrtle Usilton Coleman.

She had a distinguished educational career which included graduating from Chestertown High School in 1937, receiving her R.N. from the Memorial Hospital in Easton, MD in 1941, earning her BS in Education from the University of Delaware in 1960, and her Master's in Education from the University of Delaware in 1964. She went on to earn her certificate in Real Estate sales from Wesley College in Dover, DE in 1973 and continued to earn 75 additional college credits in education from the University of Delaware up until 1989.

Her working career started in 1935 for the Chestertown High School Cafeteria. In 1938, she began working for Memorial Hospital. She worked at both jobs part-time while attending school. From 1941 to 1956, she was the R.N. Supervisor for all floors of Kent General Hospital in Dover, DE. She then began a career as a school teacher for the Smyrna school district from 1956 through 1976 teaching grades 3, 4, 5, and 6. She became a Title I Director and was the first Kindergarten Principal of the Smyrna School District. In 1978, she became the Principle of Clayton Elementary School and remained in that position until her retirement in 1989.

After retirement, she enjoyed volunteering as a Tutor in Florida and Delaware Elementary Schools and continued to work part-time for the YMCA After School Program.

Her active memberships included a "Who's who" in American Education Associations. She was also a retired member of the Delaware Nurses Association and the American Nurses Association. In June of 1989, she received a Commendation from the Delaware General Assembly for services rendered to the community for a period of over 40 years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by 5 siblings, Charles P. Coleman, Jr., Doris Jacquette, Flossie Trego, Robert Coleman, and James Coleman.

She is survived by her daughter, Elise Harriett Andrew; a grandson, William McBride, III and his wife Saundra; and a great grandson, Joshua; 3 sisters, Betty Hoagland and Miriam Elbourn, both of Rock Hall, MD, and Anne Alexander of Eldersburg, MD; and one brother, William Coleman of Bloomfield, Conn.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 18, 2010 at 11am in Ewell's St. Paul Methodist Church located on West Street in Clayton, DE, where friends may call at 10am.

Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery Smyrna.

Salmons, Marguerite G.

Marguerite G. Salmons of Harrington, DE passed away on Thursday, November 18, 2010 at Genesis Health Care in Milford, DE.

She was 90.

Mrs. Salmons was born December 14, 1919 in Syosset, NY the daughter of the late Augustus Green and Lillian Porter Green.

She worked as a volunteer as an Airplane Spotter during WWII. Later she was employed for many years by ID Caulk in Milford, DE and the DuPont Company in Seaford, DE.

Mrs. Salmons enjoyed reading, and writing poetry. She liked to crotchet and was an avid history buff, especially of WWII history.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Matford Salmons in 1967; two brothers, Frank and Augustus Green; and two sisters, Grace Slaughter and Emma Sibitzky.

She is survived by her sister, Gloria G. Brittingham of Smyrna, DE; and many nieces and nephews.

Viewing services for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, November 23, 2010 from 10am to 12pm at the Faries Funeral Chapel located on 29 S. Main St., Smyrna, DE.

Funeral services will begin at 12 noon.

Burial will be at Hollywood Cemetery in Harrington, DE following the services.
