Mullen, Joseph E.

Joseph E. Mullen, age 77 of Smyrna, DE, died at home on Monday, January 3, 2011.

Born and raised in Chester, PA, Joe lived in Eddystone, PA before moving to Smyrna, DE, 39 years ago.

He was the son of the late Charles A. Mullen and Amelia Harper Mullen. Brother of the late Charles Mullen, Bertha Baynes, and Marie Moore. He is survived by his loving wife, Carole G. Mullen. Surviving brothers William and wife Dolores of Winter Park, FL, and James Mullen and wife Pat of Lady lake, FL. Sons, Mark Mullen of Irving, TX, and David Mullen and wife Donna of Townsend, DE. Grandchildren Laura Mullen, Kristen Mullen of Denton, TX, Bryan Mullen of Dallas, TX, Jeffrey Mullen and Ashley Mullen of Dover, DE and step grandchildren Sara Jordan and Jessica Kline. Great granddaughter Jade Thorpe of Athens, TX, and step great grandson Cameron Jordan.

Visitation for family and friends will be held in the Chapel of Faries Funeral Home, 29 S. Main St. Smyrna, DE from 9 to 10:15am. Funeral services will be held in the Chapel of the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear, DE on Friday, January 7, 2011 at 11am.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to the Salvation Army, 400 N. Orange St. Wilmington, DE 19801.

Reed, Ethel Smith

Ethel Smith Reed of Smyrna, DE passed away on Sunday, December 12, 2010 at Pinnacle Health Care in Smyrna.

She was 69.

Mrs. Reed was born September 18, 1941 in Wilmington, DE the daughter of the late Collins Smith, Sr. and Caroline M. Weiant.

She worked for 20 years for the Harris Clothing Factory in Smyrna.

In her spare time, she enjoyed going to the Dover Downs Slots.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, David Smith.

She is survived by 5 brothers, Collins Smith, Jr. of Wilmington, DE, Lawrence A. Smith of Venice, FL, and George Smith, Robert Smith, and Francis Smith, all of Wilmington; her special cousins who spent a lot of time with her and helped cared for her, Liz and Laura; and extended family members.

A viewing will be held on Wednesday, December 15, 2010 from 6-8pm in the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 S. Main St. Smyrna, DE.

Graveside services will be on Thursday, December 16, 2010 at 10am in Gracelawn Memorial Park in Wilmington.

Hughes, Richard L.

Air Force

Richard L. Hughes of Dover, DE passed away peacefully on Sunday December 12, 2010 at home.

He was 80.

Mr. Hughes was born August 20, 1930 in Florence, NJ the son of the late Paul R. and Helen Hughes.

He retired as a Flight Engineer for the Dover Air Force Base.

Mr. Hughes enjoyed his work and loved flying all over the world. He enjoyed bringing gifts home to his family from abroad. He always surprised his family with treats when he came home from long trips. Mr. Hughes introduced Capri Sun to his family before it was available for sale in the US.

He enjoyed NASCAR and was an avid sports fan, especially of the Philadelphia Eagles.

His hobbies included making ceramics, playing golf, and working in his yard. He was always known by those who knew him to have a stash of junk food that he kept in a desk drawer at work and beside his recliner at home. Also, he enjoyed spending time with his family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Frances Mary Hughes in 2009.

He is survived by a daughter, Jean G. Pearce and her husband, Brad of Dover; two sons, Paul R. Hughes of Dover, and John P. Hughes and his wife Edna of Warton, MD; and 5 grandchildren, Steven W., Richard L., Georgianna M. Bromley, Aaron T., Ashlee A. Hughes.

Memorial services will be Friday December 17, 2010 at 10 am in the Chapel of the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear, DE.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to Delaware Hospice, 911 South DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19904.

Adams, Yoshiko K. "Yo"

Yoshiko K. "Yo" Adams of Smyrna, DE died on Sunday, January 2, 2011 at Kent General Hospital in Dover, DE.

She was 87.

Private memorial services will be held at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Smyrna, DE.

Eller, Burl Allen

Air Force

Burl Allen Eller, aged 62, son of Jean Eller and the late Bruce A. Eller of Grassy Creek, NC died on Friday, December 31, 2010 surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Eller was born December 14, 1948 in Jefferson, NC.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Helen and Harvey Dillinger; his paternal grandparents, Lucy and Grant Eller; and two grandsons, DJ Marshall and Eric Marshall.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Ramona Eller; sister, Yvonne Stanley; children, Yvonne and Frank Marshall, Frances and Perry Mace, Ted and Terry Greene, Michael and Barbara Greene, and Andrew and Tammy Greene; 14 grandchildren, Vickie, Daniel, Jason, Melissa, Ethan, Duane, Melanie, Jennifer, Elizabeth, Samantha, Steven, James, Daniel, and Ashton; 10 great-grandchildren; nieces, Katie and her husband John Stapleford and Megan Stanley; and one great niece.

Burl loved to visit old time steam shows, tractor shows and stamp shows. He liked working on his machinery and working with his stamps. He served his country in the Air Force. Burl spent most of his working life at the Delaware City Refinery and retired after 35 years as a Millwright worker. He liked driving his tractor on the farm.

His dream was to someday buy a big plane and travel around the country and buy old tractors and have a museum for people to see how it was in the old days of our country.

He was a quiet man and a much-loved man who took care of his family and enjoyed his retirement in his way.

We love him dearly and will miss him very much.

Memorial services are scheduled for Wednesday, January 5, 2010 at 7pm in the Faries Funeral Chapel located at 29 S. Main St. Smyrna, DE, where visitation is from 6-7pm.

George, Dorothy M. "Dot"

Dorothy M. "Dot" George of Smyrna, DE passed away on Thursday, December 9, 2010 at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford, DE after a short illness.

She was 74.

Dot was born April 16, 1936 in Newark, NJ the daughter of the late Mildred Thompson Chambers.

She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren; her family was her life. She had many friends and was especially fond of the time spent with her friends in Spring Meadow.

In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Chambers.

She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, William "Bob" George; three daughters, Susan Schake and her husband, David of Hackettstown, NJ, Linda Price of Culpeper, VA, and Diane Searles and her husband Rich of Warrenton, VA; a sister, Lois Fleury and her husband Robert of Westfield, MA; six grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

Memorial services will be scheduled at a later date.

In memory of Dot, the family suggests memorial contributions to Delaware Hospice, 911 South DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19904, or to the American Cancer Society, 92 Reads Way Suite 205, New Castle, DE 19720.
