O'Callaghan, Irene Mallon

MALLON, IRENE (also known as Irene O'Callaghan). Died July 9, Christiana Hospital. Born Mary Irene Dunne, September 23 1934, in Washington Heights, Manhattan, New York City to immigrants from Ireland, Joseph and Margaret. Survived by her husband since 2002, Michael; her much loved children Dorene, Jimmy and Chip; her siblings Angie, Josephine and Joe; and her grandchildren: Catie, James and Eric, Charlie, Megan and Matty, Ronan and Daire, Rhian, Oisin and Eoin, and Aidan.

Irene was a remarkable women whose life consisted of three distinct phases; growing up in New York City; her marriage to Charles and move to Delaware, and then her marriage to Michael following Charles' death in 1988.

Her character was formed growing up in the bustle of Manhattan and The Bronx in the mid-20th century and she remained a New Yorker to her fingertips. She would often tell tales of escapades with her siblings and also with her dearest friend Joan Mulhern (her partner in crime for fifty-six years who was with her when she passed away). A particular favorite was one with Joan that involved artifically raising one's temparature to a medically dangerous level and then getting the company doctor to sign them off sick for the afternoon, which would then be spent dancing or at the movies!

In 1957 she married a stylish young Celt of Ulster heritage she met at a dance, Charles Mallon, and they set up home close to the Grand Concourse in The Bronx, where Dorene, Jimmy and Chip were born. As the social character of The Bronx changed, and Charles was offered a new job with the Penn Central Railroad, they elected to join the suburban boom of the tail-end of the Eisenhower years and moved to New Jersey before finally settling in Pike Creek, Delaware, in 1972.

Irene worked for the Department of Labor and was an active member of the community through a number of organizations, most notably the Millcreek Ladies' Auxiliary Fire Company and the Friends of Brandywine Springs. A devout Roman Catholic, who honored without fail the obligations of her faith, she was a member of St John the Beloved, in which her Requiem Mass will be held.

These links gave her some comfort when Charles passed away in 1988, an event which unsurprisingly hit Irene very hard. However, in 2000, on a visit to Ireland for a wedding, she met a recently widowed Dubliner called Michael O'Callaghan. His mellow personality and gentle humor proved to be the perfect complement to Irene and in 2002 they were married.

This was indeed a second life for Irene. Family and friends noticed the bounce in her step and her rediscovered vigor. She introduced Michael (who was accepted as a US citizen this week) to all aspects of life in the New World and was delighted to acquire another batch of grandchildren from his children with his late wife Vickie; John, Paul and Mary. While Irene was an American through and through, she treasured the new link to her ethnic heritage that marriage to Michael gave her and pursued it to the full, proudly acquiring an Irish passport.

To the end she and Michael pursued their shared hobby of travel, which took them all over the United States and Europe. A trip made just before Irene's passing, when she knew her health was worsening, to Chicago was a particular highlight; she had always wanted to see the 'Windy City' and she and Michael were glad to feel the biting wind off Lake Michigan and look up at the skyscrapers just before she was called home.

In conclusion, Irene was an unforgettable character who lived a life that was both rich in experience and generous in the opportunities it gave her. It was a full, and fulfilled, life in every sense. More than most her personality lives on vividly though her children; all of whom have in varying degrees inherited her personal dynamism, extreme generosity, sense of fun, ability to turn a phrase and occasional lack of tact!

We can thus take comfort from the fact that while she is now with the Lord, she remains alive to us on Earth in so many ways. God bless you Irene, slan abhaile, and thank you for everything.

Viewing - Mealey Funeral Home, Limestone Road, 6-8pm Sunday
