O'Brien, Jannie G.

Jannie G. O'Brien, of Smyrna, formerly of Clayton, died on Thursday January 13, 2005 at Bayhealth Medical Center, Dover. She was 85.

Jane, as she was known to her friends, was a remarkable woman, much loved by her devoted husband, Rollie. They met during the big war and corresponded for years; when he returned to the States, she got on a bus in Lincoln, Alabama and rode all the way to San Francisco to make sure he meant business. They spent the next forty years together. They raised two sons, David and John, and saw a raft of grandchildren populate their world. Jane loved her parents and never forgot her humble beginnings. She was the peacekeeper and great communicator among her siblings and forgave them all their minor flaws. She had the largest ability to love others most people have ever seen.

Jane knew how to extract the best out of life; she counted no strangers in her world.

She talked to everyone as if they were in on her big secret and left them smiling and a bit better than the way she found them. She was as generous as the great outdoors; she gave to and of herself freely, and she was just as happy giving to everyone else. How she could laugh. And talk. A born storyteller, she wasn't afraid to stretch the truth when it needed to be done.

She was a master tailor, a seamstress, a craftsman, a creator. Whether she was making clothes or overcoats, crocheting a baby blanket, growing her African violets or her enormous purple irises, or hand painting a ceramic dish, her concentration was fierce and her results unique. Mistakes were to laugh at and to start over with. There was always something yummy brewing on her stove. Her life was filled with lots of homemade teddy bears. Everything she made was made with love.

Jane lived for many years with her family in Philadelphia before moving to Clayton, where she spent the last years of her life. She had been active in her church and in the Clayton

Senior Center and discovered the joys of Delaware and its wonderful people. She left the world considerably richer for having been here.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rollie O'Brien, and a son, David O'Brien.

She is survived by a son, John O'Brien, of Philadelphia; 6 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Services will be held 11:00 AM Monday January 17 at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce St., Smyrna, where friends may call at 10:00 AM.

Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Smyrna.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to First Presbyterian Church, 118 W. Commerce St., Smyrna, De. 19977.

Arrangements were by Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, Smyrna.
