O'Connor, Helen F.

Helen F. O'Connor of Smyrna, Delaware, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday August 18, 2007 in the presence of her loving daughters.

She was 93.

Mrs. O'Connor was born July 26, 1914 in Huntersville, PA the daughter of the late John Houghton and Laura Miller.

She worked all her life until she retired to Frederica, Delaware. She worked at Grants Department Store and Cardorama Gift Shop in Dover, Delaware.

She was preceded in death by two son-in-laws, Sherman R. Barner and Robert Elliott.

She is survived by three daughters; Margie Seyler and her husband Harold of Muncy, Pennsylvania, Dorothy J. Barner with whom she lived with of Smyrna, and Beatrice Elliot of Howey In The Hills, Florida, and a sister; Sophie Watts of Benton, Pennsylvania.

She will be buried at Pleasant Hills Cemetery in Hughsville, Pennsylvania. Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family.

The family suggests contributions be made to Compassionate Care Hospice located at 5610 Kirkwood Hwy. Wilmington, Delaware 19808.

Arrangements are by Faries Funeral Directors, Inc., 29 South Main Street Smyrna, Delaware.

Marjorie Ann O'Day, 94

HARRINGTON - Marjorie Ann "Aunt Marjie" O'Day, age 94, of Harrington, went to be with the Lord on Aug. 11, 2009.

Marjorie was born Nov. 23, 1914, in Brooklyn, N.Y. She spent the majority of her childhood living in Hempstead, N.Y. Later on she moved to Maryland in 1945 with her husband James O'Day. She then moved to Delaware in 1974 where she resided for the remainder of her life.

She was employed at the Harrington Shirt Factory from 1974 until she retired in 1979. Following her retirement she stayed with her "adopted" family (The Foy's) and spent most of her time caring for them. Marjorie had a strong devotion to her family, friends, and church.

She was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Burrsville, Md., for nearly 35 years, and would spend hours reading the Bible or her favorite prayers on a daily basis.

Marjorie became known to most people as "Aunt Marjie." To some people she felt like a friend, and to others like a grandmother. To her "adopted" family, she was like an angel sent from God to take care of and watch over them. She was a thoughtful and caring person who always put the needs of others before herself. She was greatly loved and will be missed by all, especially her "adopted" family.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband, James O'Day; her parents, Francis "Frank" C. and Mary Louise Cornell; and her sisters, Lillian Flintspack, Ilene Goff, and Amy Cantwell.

She is survived by her sister, Virginia Cornell of Georgetown; a nephew and his family, John, Lynn, and Kacie Goff of Florida; two nieces, Nancy Osborne of New York, and Amy Cacchillo of Florida; several great-nieces and great-nephews; her "adopted" family, Sandy and Charles Foy of Harrington, Kenny, Cierra, Laura, and K.J. Foy of Farmington, Jamie, A.J., and Maxine Foy of Greenwood, Kelly Foy and David Callahan of Newark, Victoria Oberdick of Felton, Jerry and Josie Hayman of Harrington, Sheldon and Bettie Hayman of Milford, and Dallas and Pat Hayman of Houston.

Services will be 2 p.m., Friday, Aug. 14, at Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 S. DuPont Hwy., Harrington, where a visitation will be one hour prior. Interment will be in Wesley Church Cemetery, Burrsville, Md.

John B. O'Donnell

Age 78, of Milltown, DE, passed away on Sunday morning, August 1, 2004 in the Christiana Hospital.

John ("Jack") was born in Coaldale, PA, on July 26, 1926 to the late Bernard and Cecilia O'Donnell. He graduated from St. Mary's grade school and Coaldale High School in 1944. Jack proudly served in the U.S. Army between 1944 and 1946 during late hostilities and peacetime in Europe. He later graduated from Perkiomen Prep and Dickinson College in 1952. He was employed by the DuPont Company from 1952 in Textile Fibers and Marketing, and worked in Seaford, DE, Kinston, NC, and Wilmington, DE, until his retirement in 1985. He enjoyed playing golf at the Dupont Country Club with fellow retirees and friends before and after retirement. Jack was a parishioner of St. John the Beloved Catholic Church from 1958 until his death.

Jack was preceded in death in 1993 by his beloved spouse, Catherine "Kay" (Sullivan), originally of Tamaqua, PA. They met in 1946 while spectators at a local football game and married in 1950. Jack remembered not only their wedding anniversary, but also remembered the exact date he met Kay. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Daniel of Palmerton, Pa., James of Coaldale, and his sister, Rita Miller, of Coaldale.

He is survived by his beloved sister, Joan Wildoner, of Jim Thorpe, PA, and many dear nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his children, Bernard J. O'Donnell of Wilmington, Karen M. Warner of Newark, and his beloved grandchildren, Brian Warner, and Aileen and Daniel O'Donnell. Family and friends may call between 7 and 9 p.m. on Thurs. evening, Aug. 5 at the Mealey Funeral Home, Limestone and Milltown Roads, Wilmington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at Saint John the Beloved Catholic Church on Milltown Road at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 6, 2004. Internment will immediately follow at All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to either the American Heart Association or St. John the Beloved Parish.

Kenneth J. O'Brien

Age 81 of Hockessin, DE died on Friday, April 18, 2003 in Christiana Hospital.

Mr. O'Brien was retired from the DuPont Co. And was an Army veteran of WWII.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Louise; his daughter, Colleen and her husband, Richard of Hockessin; and his grandchildren, Ashley Petruno of the United States Air Force, Richard Heffron and Robin Rome.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service on Thursday April 24 at 9:30 am at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Rd., Pike Creek where friends may call after 8:30. Burial will be in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, DE.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the St. Thomas the Apostle Gymnasium Fund, 301 N. Bancroft Pkwy, Wilmington, DE 19805.

Agnes R. O'Connell

Age 90 of Wilmington, DE died Tuesday, April 30, 2002 in ManorCare in Pike Creek.

Mrs. O'Connell was a homemaker and co-establisher of Tim O'Connell & Sons, a family business. She was a member of St. Matthew's Church, a charter member of the Five Points Fire Company Ladies Auxillary and a volunteer for C.A.P.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Timothy J. O'Connell, Sr. who died in 1985; her daughter Mary Reed; and her granddaughter, Kathryn O'Connell. She is survived by her sons, John B. O'Connell of Newark, Timothy J. O'Connell, Jr. of Hockessin and Phillip O'Connell of Avondale, PA; her daughters, Elaine O'Connell of Wilmington, Clair Smiertka of Selbyville, DE and Karen Carroll of West Chester, PA; 17 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Matthew Church, 901 E. Newport Pike, Woodcrest on Friday afternoon, May 3 at 12 noon where friends may call after 10 am. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Matthew Church, 3 Curtis Ave. Wilmington, DE 19804.

Patricia M. Palmer

"Patty"

Age 55 died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Wednesday, May 18, 2005.

Patty retired in 2004 after 26 years of service with The Opportunity Center, Inc. of Wilmington.

She was a 1968 graduate of St. Peter's High School in New Castle. Patty then attended University of Delaware School of Nursing.

Patty was a member of the St. Peter's R. C. Church in New Castle. She was devoted to her faith and was a good Samaritan to all she met. She was also a member of the New Castle Senior Center. Patty loved spending time with her family and friends and enjoyed feeding the neighborhood squirrels and birds.

Patty was preceded in death by her father, Francis H. Palmer who died in 1969 and her brother Stephen K. Palmer who died in 1981. Patty is survived by her mother, Florence G. (O'Donnell) Palmer; her sisters Frances (Mowery) Field of Lewes, Susan Shattuck and her husband Dennis of Canton, PA, Sharon Thompson and her fiance' Bob Nichols of Pennsville, NJ, Beverly McClure and her husband Jerry of New Castle; and her beloved nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at St. Peter's R. C. Church 5th & Harmony Sts., New Castle, DE on Sat. morning May 21st at 10 a.m. Friends may call at the St. Peter's R.C. Church from 9 to 10 a.m Sat. morning. Interment in adjoining cemetery.

Krienen Funeral Home, New Castle

J. Kenneth Painter

Age 74, went home to be with the Lord on Thurs., Aug. 7, 2008, after fighting a gallant battle with a long illness.

Ken worked for Merck Pharmaceutical Co. for 27 years. He graduated from Reading High School and Temple University, Phila., PA. Ken was a veteran of the US Army, a member of the American Legion Post #194, Rising Sun, MD, a 25-year member of the Oxford Lions Club, of which he was past-president, and was a member of the Masonic Rajah Temple, Reading, PA. Ken served as a past member of the Board of Supervisors of West Nottingham Twp., PA. Ken loved serving community, hunting, and, in his youth, bull-riding. He will be sorely missed by friends and family alike.

Ken was preceded in death by his daughter, Sharon.

Ken leaves behind his loving wife, Sherry, who he was happily married to for the last 8 years. He is survived by his son, Scott, and daughter-in-law, Kathy; his daughter, Sherri; his granddaughter, Casey; great-grandson, Tyler; and stepchildren and step-grandchildren.

Friends and relatives are invited to visit with the family at the Union Methodist Church, 321 Fremont Road, Nottingham, PA, on Sat., Aug. 16, from 10:00-11:00 am. A memorial service in memory of Ken will be held at 11:00 am. Interment will be private.
