Starkey, James John

James John Starkey, Jr. "Jimmers" of Townsend, DE passed away on Thursday September 2, 2010 at home.

He was 22.

Mr. Starkey was born October 16, 1987 in Newark, DE the son of James John Starkey, Sr. of Middletown, DE and Evelyn Marie Sniadecki Leake, also of Middletown.

Jimmers was a self-employed Tattoo Artist. He was an excellent drawer and excelled in his craft. Besides drawing, his hobbies included working on his rap music. He also had previously worked for his uncle as an Installer for Premier Accessories of Newark, DE.

He was preceded in death by a grandfather, Jim Starkey; an uncle, Charles Sayers; and a brother, Joshua Starkey.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his maternal grandmother, Judith M. Riley of Townsend; maternal grandfather, Daniel G. Sniadecki, Sr. of Dover, DE; paternal grandmother, Sandra Lee Starkey of Newark; step-father, Michael Leake of Middletown; soon to be step-mother, Gloria Martinez of Middletown; a daughter, Aleceya L. Ford-Starkey of New Castle, DE; two sons, Dominic J. and Demitri J. Quinn-Starkey, both of Charlestown, MD; his fiancée, Kayla Quinn of Charlestown, MD; two sisters, LeeAnn M. and Jayla M. Starkey, both of Middletown; a brother, Austin T. Starkey of Middletown; an uncle, with whom he lived with, Daniel G. Sniadecki, Jr.; great grandparents, John and Mary Latshaw of New Port Ritchie, FL; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and extended family members.

A viewing will be held on Wednesday, September 8, 2010 from 7 to 9 pm in the Faries Funeral Chapel located at 29 S. Main St., Smyrna, DE.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 9, 2010 at 11 am in the Townsend Freewill Baptist Church located at 4519 S. DuPont Pkwy, Townsend, DE.

Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be sent to Faries Funeral Home to help defray funeral expenses.

Rinker, Nelson Vernon

Air Force

Nelson Vernon Rinker of Smyrna, Delaware passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loved ones on Thursday, July 1, 2010.

He was 80 years old.

Nelson was born on December 8, 1929 in Bismark, West Virginia. He enlisted in the US Air Force in 1951, and served overseas in Japan the Philippine Islands and Thailand during his 20 years of military service. He was awarded several honors including the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal, US Service Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Commendation Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and a Certificate of Appreciation from President Richard Nixon.

Nelson and his family moved to Smyrna, Delaware in November 1959, where he co-owned Hairgrove and Rinker Exxon Service Station. He later worked for Blanchfield's Arco. Nelson also briefly owned and operated a Bowes auto parts business. In 1986 he went to work for the Town of Smyrna as the Water Systems Operator and retired in May 2009. In the summer of 2004, Nelson was honored by the Chesapeake Section of the American Water Works Association as the Operator of the Year.

Nelson was preceded in death by his parents, Olivia "Olvie" and Flora Rinker and his sister Louise. He is survived by his siblings Arvella Carpenter and her husband Keith, Mitch Rinker and his wife Linda; Carolyn Rinker, their son John Rinker and his wife Colleen, their daughter Debbie Rinker Doyle, and her fiancé Gerald Nadel; his grandchildren Jeff Rinker, Jonni Lynn Rinker Wolskee and her husband Jason, Wesley and Joy Doyle; his great grandchildren Sunni Mae and Peter Wolskee; his dear companion Calysta Hitchens and her family, and his beloved dogs, Buddy and Sandy.

Services will be Tuesday July 6, 2010 at 6pm in the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 South Main Street Smyrna, Delaware where friends may call one hour prior to the services.

Interment services will be Friday July 9, 2010 at 11am in the Chapel of the Delaware Veterans memorial Cemetery Bear, Delaware.

Contributions made to Delaware Hospice, 911 South DuPont Highway Dover, DE 19901 would be appreciated.

Howard, Donald P.

Army

Donald P. Howard of Smyrna, DE passed away on Tuesday July 27, 2010 at his home.

He was 77.

Mr. Howard was born August 15, 1932 in Philadelphia, PA the son of the late Charles Howard and Caroline Fryer Howard.

He retired after many years of service as a Supervisor of Maintenance for Western Union in Philadelphia.

Mr. Howard served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War.

He was a member of St. Polycarp's Roman Catholic Church in Smyrna.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Howard.

He is survived by his wife, Grace E. Howard; and a step-son, Kenneth MacKenzie of Ocala, FL.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday July 31, 2010 at 10:30 am in St. Polycarp's Parish located at 135 Ransom Lane in Smyrna.

Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to the St. Polycarp's Church Building Fund, 135 Ransom Lane, Smyrna, DE 19977.

Wallace, Helen Eva Unruh

Helen Eva Unruh Wallace of Odessa, DE passed away peacefully at her residence on Saturday, October 9, 2010. She was 89. She was born on August 10, 1921, in Warwick, MD, to the late Harry R. and Ethel May Reed Unruh.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Raymond B. Wallace and a brother, Carl R. Unruh. She is survived by her two daughters, Diane W. Ennis and son-in-law Bruce C. Ennis and Barbara R. Hetzell and son-in-law Carlton L. Hetzell, all of Dover; and by her granddaughters, Heather D. Ennis of Dover, and Terri L. Lloyd and Rita A. Fry both of Smyrna. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Her survivors include a sister, Jeanette U. Reed and a brother, Jerome N. Unruh and his wife Helen C. Unruh, all of Odessa.

Mrs. Wallace lived in Odessa most of her life and was an active community volunteer and leader. She was a founding member and President of the Odessa Women's Club, where she was instrumental in the restoration of Old St. Paul's Church, as the organization's clubhouse. She was hostess at Old St. Paul's at Christmas In Odessa for over thirty years. She served as state President of the Delaware State Federation of Women's Clubs and later served on the board of the General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC), as International News Editor. She served on the Kent Home Health Care Board, and for 14 years served on the Veterans Advisory Board, as a representative of the General Federation of Women's Clubs.

Also in Odessa, she was the first woman elected to serve on the Odessa Town Council; she also served as Chairman of the Odessa Town Planning and Zoning Commission and as the Odessa Zoning Administrator. She was an advocate in the preservation of historic Odessa. She was President of the Parent-Teacher's Association for the Odessa Elementary School. She served as an officer in the Ladies Auxiliary of the Odessa Fire Company. For many years, she and her husband at Christmas time on their own took Christmas food packages to impoverished families in the Odessa area.

Mrs. Wallace served as President of the Lower New Castle Republican Women's Club and on the board for the State Republican Women. She was a devoted Republican her entire adult life. She participated in legislation at Legislative Hall in Dover that was beneficial to the inhabitants of the State of Delaware. For her work on behalf of Republican candidates, she was honored by a reception in the Blue Room of the White House by First Lady Betty Ford.

A noted artist who studied under Howard Schroder, she showed her paintings throughout the region. For fourteen years, she taught private oil painting lessons to youth in the Odessa area, and at one time took her class on a field trip to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

She was a Lutheran and member of the Order of St. Luke. She was one of 500 women listed in "Legacy of Delaware Women."

She was a graduate of Middletown High School and Delaware State College of Cosmetology. At one time she operated two successful beauty shops, one in Odessa and the other in Delaware City.

She toured throughout Europe and the United States, including the Hawaiian Islands. For many years, Mrs. Wallace and her husband were summer residents of Pickering Beach, DE, where she enjoyed entertaining her family. She was a devoted, generous and loving wife, mother, grandmother and aunt.

Funeral services will be Saturday, October 16, 2010 at 2 pm in the Faries Funeral Chapel located on 29 S. Main St., Smyrna, where friends may call from 7 to 9 pm Friday evening. The internment will be at Old Drawyer's Cemetery near Odessa.

Lowman, Barbara A.

Barbara A. Lowman of Smyrna, Delaware died Saturday March 20, 2010 at the home of her daughter surrounded by her loving family.

She was 75.

Mrs. Lowman was born August 29, 1934 in Middletown, Delaware the daughter of the late Raymond Reed and Lillian Connors Johnson.

She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Lowman enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and her many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Alvin Lowman in 2003; and a sister, Lillian Marie Condron in 2005.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Brenda A. and Melvin J. Hershberger of Dover, Delaware; two brothers, Leo F. Johnson, Jr. of Middletown, and Raymond Reed of Zephyrhills, Florida; a sister, Elva M. Blendt of Smyrna; two grandchildren, Michael and Megan Hershberger of Dover; and two special nieces, Crystal Talley of Wilmington, Delaware, and Dawn Watts of Hawaii.

Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at 12 noon in the Faries Funeral Chapel of 29 South Main Street Smyrna, Delaware where friends may call an hour prior to the services.

Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery Smyrna, Delaware.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Delaware Hospice 911 South DuPont Highway Dover, Delaware 19904.
