Tillie Luitjens
Tillie Luitjens, 83, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at Osceola Community Hospital, Sibley.
Services were Monday at Walton-Roste Funeral Home, Sibley, with interment in Pleasant View cemetery , Little Rock.
Tillie Luitjens was born Nov. 19, 1918, near Little Rock, the daughter of William and Grytje (Geersema) Luitjens. She attended school near Little Rock and continued her education at Iowa State Teachers College. She later earned a master's degree in school administration and began work on a doctorate at the University of South Dakota.
She taught in Lyon and Oscola counties, Little Rock, Sibley, Orange City and Sioux City. She became assistant principal at North Junior High School, Sioux City. She taught in Iowa 43 years. After she retired, she lived in Sibley, Orange City and Sioux City.
She was a member of Zonta International, Delta Cappa Gamma, American Association of University Women and Iowa Association of Secondary Principals and lifetime membership in the National Education Association.
Survivors include one brother, Richard of Sioux City.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Henry, William and Tom, and three sisters, Marie, Angeline and Viola.
Helena Zomer
Helena Zomer, 96, of Rock Valley died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, at McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls, S.D.
Services were Saturday at Netherlands Reformed Church, Corsica, S.D., with interment in Graceland cemetery .
Survivors include two sons, three daughters including Mrs. Cozyn (Nellie) Rozeboom of Inwood, 61 grandchildren, 102 great-grandchildren and 21 great-great-grandchildren.
Gershom Van Roekel
Gershom Van Roekel, 85, of Hull died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, at Sioux Center Community Hospital Nursing Facility.
Memorial services were Saturday at First Reformed Church, Hull, with interment in Hope cemetery .
Survivors include his wife, five children, eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and five brothers including Clinton of George and Merle of Rock Rapids.
Thomas Busse
Thomas Busse, 67, of El Paso, Texas, died Thursday, Aug. 8, 2002, El Paso.
Funeral mass will be today (Wednesday) at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Name Catholic Church, Rock Rapids.
Mr. Busse was the son of Clarence "Fliv" and Margaret Busse. When he was 7, the family moved from Ellsworth, Minn., to Rock Rapids. He served 20 years in the navy and retired as an E-7. He resided in Orlando, Fla., until moving to El Paso seven years ago.
Survivors include two sons, Gregory and Bradley; three daughters, Therese O'Brian, Dena Stephenson and Mrs. Keith (Susan) Chapman; seven grandchildren and twin sisters, Mrs. Roger (Mary ) Krason and Mrs. Eldon (Debbie) Kruse.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Viola Meiburg
Viola Meiburg, 89, of Inwood died Friday, Aug. 9, 2002, at Sioux Valley Hospital, Sioux Falls, S.D.
Services were Monday at Christ Lutheran Church, Alvord, with interment in Richland cemetery .
Viola Hanzen was born Jan. 4, 1913, near Inwood, the daughter of Herman and Mary (Serck) Hanzen. She attended country school in the Inwood area.
On Sept. 20, 1939, she married
Louie Watke in Rock Rapids. They farmed east of Inwood until moving to a farm south of Rock Rapids in the early 1950s. They then purchased a farm north of Doon. After husband died Feb. 28, 1976, she moved to Inwood.
On Dec. 26, 1979, she married
Erwin Meiburg in Alvord. They lived in Inwood. He died April 23, 2002.
She is survived by one brother, Milo of Inwood; Erwin's children, Eileen Mieburg, Mrs. Mark (Barbara) Carroll, Douglas Meiburg, Leon Meiburg, Dean Meiburg and Gaylen Meiburg, eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two husband; one brother, Walter, and one grandson, Bret Meiburg.
David DeZeeuw
David DeZeeuw, 47, of Rock Valley died suddenly Friday, Aug. 9, 2002, in Spirit Lake.
Memorial services were Tuesday at First Reformed Church, Rock Valley, with interment in Valley View cemetery .
Survivors include his wife, one son, two daughters, his mother, one brother, two sisters, four stepbrothers including Everret and Marvin Van Maanen, both of Doon, and three stepsisters including Mrs. Marvin (Joan) Post of Doon.
Roger Stubbe
Roger Stubbe, 72, of Rock Rapids died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002, at McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls, S.D.
Funeral services are pending at Roste Funeral Home, Rock Rapids.
Fred Zylstra
Fred Zylstra, 86 of Sioux Center died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at Sioux Center Community Hospital Nursing Facility.
Memorial services were Oct. 8 at Central Reformed Church, Sioux Center, with interment in Memory Gardens cemetery .
Mr. Zylstra was born Dec. 24, 1915, at Hull, the son of Herman and Sara (Fennema) Zylstra. He grew up at Doon where he graduated from Christian school.
On April 14, 1941, he married
Gertrude Addink at South Sioux City, Neb. They resided in Doon for a short time before moving to Sioux Center. He was a truck mechanic and maintenance person at Sioux Center Creamery several years. In August 2000, he became a resident of the Sioux Center Community Hospital Nursing Facility.
At Central Reformed Church, he served as a deacon and taught Sunday School and was a foster grandparent at Hope Haven in Rock Valley.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Doug of Loveland, Colo., and Ronald of Inwood; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
