Dolores Hoekstra

Dolores Hoekstra, 80, of Rock Valley died Friday, Feb. 1, at Valley Manor in Rock Valley.

Funeral services were 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, at First Reformed Church in Rock Valley.

Mrs. Hoekstra was born June 17, 1921, in Rock Rapids, the daughter of Fred and Ann (Baxter) Stubbe. After graduating from Wilson High School in 1939, she worked at Joyce Lumber Company and Lyon Rural Electric until 1945. She married John E. Hoekstra on May 16, 1946, in Rock Rapids. Together they lived in Rock Rapids until moving to Bellevue, Neb., in 1968, and then to Rock Valley in 1972.

She was a member of First Reformed Church.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Joan Freeman of Bellevue, and Paula and her husband, Arvin Altena of Sioux Center; a brother, Roger Stubbe of Sioux Falls; a sister-in-law, Jeanette Stubbe of Salt Lake City, Utah; two grandchildren, Jill and her husband, Dan Hruskocy, and Rhonda Stygstra; and three great-grandchildren, Meghan Hruskocy, David and Joseph Stygstra.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Frederich Stubbe.

Ruth Schar

Ruth Schar, 88, of Rock Rapids died Monday afternoon, Jan. 4, at Merrill Pioneer Community Hospital in Rock Rapids.

Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 7 at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Rock Rapids. Rev. Henry Thorberg officiated.

Ruth Elizabeth Schar was born Sept. 21, 1913, at Ft. Collins, Colo., the daughter of Rev. John G. and Emma (Hertlein) Baumgaertner. She started her education in Colorado and in 1924, her family moved to George. Ruth often would recall this moving trip with her family in the model T touring car. Many of the trials or this move made it very memorable. She graduated from George High School and attended Milwaukee School of Nursing, graduating with honors in 1935. On Nov. 28, 1939, she was united in marriage to Warren Schar at George. Following their marriage they lived in Hull, until 1968, when they moved to Rock Rapids. While living in Hull, she worked in the Hull Hospital, the Sheldon Hospital and for Dr. Keith Swanson in Hull. When they moved she started working at the Hegg Memorial Hospital in Rock Valley until her retirement in 1975. While living in Rock Rapids she became active in Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Order of The Eastern Star. In her spare time she enjoyed needlepoint, playing bridge, cooking and baking, singing especially in high school, traveling and spending time with her children and grandchildren. On Feb. 17, 1998, Warren died ending their marriage of 58 years. After his death Ruth continued to live in their home. After a brief illness she was admitted to the Merrill Pioneer Community Hospital in Rock Rapids.

She is survived by sons and daughter-in-laws, Stephen and Ann Schar of Columbia, S.C., and Curtis and Laura Schar of Rock Rapids, and daughters, Madelon Schar and Deb Burns of Beloit, Wis.; four grandchildren, Daniel Schar of Los Angeles, Calif.; Pamela Schar of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Matthew Schar of Rock Rapids; and Kara and Justin Kruger of Chandler, Ariz.; along with one sister, Magdalyn Akre of Pasco, Wash.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, John and Emma; her husband, Warren; one sister, Hedwig Steinburch; and one brother, Adelbert Baumgaertner.

Gertie Van Engen

Gertie Van Engen, 86, of Ireton died suddenly Wendnesday, Feb. 6, at Hegg Memorial Hospital in Rock Valley.

Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9 at Christian Reformed Church in Ireton. Rev. Ron Sprik officiated.

Mrs. Van Egen was born April 19, 1915, in Rock Valley, the daughter of William and Hendrika (Wallenburg) Termaat. She married John H. Van Engen on Dec. 12, 1940, in Doon. They farmed in the area until retiring in 1978. John died Aug. 14, 1993. She moved to Valley Manor in Rock Valley in Nov. 2001.

She was a member of Christian Reformed Church in Ireton and active with Foster Grandparent Program of Hope Haven.

Survivors include three sons and their wives, Howard and Dorinda of Hawarden, Wil and Linda of Hudson, S.D., Bruce and Lana of Sanborn; four daughters and their husbands, Rita and David Busse of Doon, Marge and Arlin Van Driel of Ireton, Kathy and Dale Nussbaum and Debra and Kim Nagel, all of Brookings, S.D.; 20 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, William "Bud" and Floss Termaat of Rock Valley; five sisters, Christine Van Tol of Rock Valley; Winner Visser of Grand Rapids, Mich., Coba Mulder of Rock Valley, Tillie and her husband, Herman Bork, of Luverne, Minn., Henrietta and her husband, Ralph Oostra of Holland, Mich.; a sister-in-law, Angie Termaat of Rock Valley.

She was also preceded in death by a brother, Jack Termaat, and a great-grandson, Ethan Van Driel.

Ellen M. Frerk

Paullina. Iowa-Ellen M. Frerk, 78, or Rock Valley, formerly of Paullina, died Saturday, March 16, at Valley Manor in Rock Valley.

Funeral services were Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church in Paullina. The Rev. Karl Eckhoff officiated.

Ellen Marie Holck Frerk was born Jan. 22, 1924, on a farm northwest of Paullina, the daughter of Otto C. and Mary (Meyer) Holck. She was baptized on March 2, 1924, at the home of her grandparents, Herman and Mary Meyer. She was instructed and confirmed in the doctrines of the Lutheran faith by the Rev. Hartmeister. She lived most of her life on a farm southwest of Paullina.

She attended rural schools until 1932, when her mother was called to her eternal rest. She then attended the parochial school and later Paullina High School, graduating in 1941. She attended nursing school in Sioux City for one year.

She married Lester Frerk on May 16, 1943. To this union three children were born. In 1983 she became a resident in the Wide View Rest Home in Paullina, moving to the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull in 1986. On Dec. 20, 1996, she moved to Valley Manor in Rock Valley.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Paullina. She enjoyed reading her Bible, doing crafts, cross-stitching and embroidering.

Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, MaryEllen and Loren Reyelts of Hull, and La Donna and Don Hurtig of Paullina; a son and his wife, Richard and Anita Frerk of Paullina; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a half sister, Sally Mitchell of Lake Park, and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Clifford L. Kragt

Clifford Lee Kragt was born on Aug. 11, 1940, at rural Hull, to Edward and Adeline (Koele) Kragt. He attended school and graduated from the Hull High School. He continued his studies at Iowa State University, receiving a Bachelor's Degree and a Masters Degree. He studied at Michigan State College and was awarded a Ph.D in reproductive physiology. He moved in 1966 to San Francisco, Calif., where he had a Fellowship and faculty position in the University of California Medical School at Berkley. He taught there until 1972 and then moved to Kalamazoo, Mich. and worked as a research scientist for the UpJohn Co. He was a published author writing a book on cancer research.

He married Diane Baker in 1962 and to this union two sons were born, Mark and Brian. He particularly enjoyed Little League, Boy Scouts and Indian Guides. He enjoyed traveling, especially to Iowa to visit family. He often traveled to Europe when asked to speak about his research projects.

In 1978 he moved to Iowa to live with his parents. He built a home in Boyden and recently had Brian move in with him. He had a special bond with Brian.

He is survived by his two sons, Mark and his wife Polly, and Brian; his mother, Adeline Kragt; one sister, Eileen and her husband Al Grevengoed; and four grandchildren, Mark, Laura, Sarah and Caitlin. His father preceded him in death.

Cliff passed away Sat. March 2. Memorial services were held on Tuesday, March 11, in the First Reformed Church in Hull. Internment was at Hope Cemetary, Hull.

Nellie Bartman

Nellie Bartman, 79, of Rock Valley died Tuesday, March 19, at Hegg Memorial Hospital in Rock Valley.

Funeral services were Friday at Calvin Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley, with the Rev. Roger Sparks officiating.

Nellie Bartman was born Aug. 21, 1922, near Rock Valley, the daughter of Sebert and Mary (Van Beek) Kooima. She attended Rock Valley Christian Grade School and graduated from Rock Valley Community High School. Nellie received a teaching degree from Northwestern College in Orange City. She taught in area rural schools for three years and for two years in Rock Valley Christian School.

Nellie married Theodore Bartman on March 14, 1947, in Rock Valley. Together they farmed north of Rock Valley until Ted's death on May 15, 1980. Nellie continued to live on the farm for three years before moving to Rock Valley in 1983.

She enjoyed volunteering in the community. She was involved in the Senior Citizens, Meals-On-Wheels and the hospital auxiliary. She was also very active in the Calvin Christian Reformed Church. She had a love for music and enjoyed cooking in her home and on the family farm. Her grandchildren and their activities played a very important part of her life.

Surviving relatives include two sons and their wives, Brent and Kathy Bartman of Worthington, Minn., and Todd and Julie Bartman of Rock Valley; two daughters and their husbands, Muriel and Carl Arkema of North Muskegon, Mich., and Randa and Bernie Cole of Las Vegas, Nev.; two brothers, Simon Kooima and Clarence Kooima and his wife, Winifred, all of Rock Valley; three sisters, Tena Eppinga, Ann Ver Burg and Ruth Schleis, all of Rock Valley; seven grandchildren, Timothy Arkema and his wife, Cristy, Ryan Arkema and his fiance, Jaclyn Van Beek, Trent Arkema, Brooke Bartman, Patrick Bartman, Dana Bartman and Theo Bartman; and a great-grandson, Logan Arkema.

In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by a brother, Peter Kooima; and a sister, Everdean Kooima.
