Bernice M. Mahoney

Bernice M. Mahoney, 81, of Marcus, formerly of Cherokee, died Wednesday, March 20, at Heartland Care Center in Marcus.

Funeral services were held Saturday at Memorial Presbyterian Church in Cherokee, with the Revs. Patricia Cox and Bob Blair officiating.

Bernice was born May 28, 1920, in Marcus to Roy and Esther (Dawson) Woodall. She attended Tilden Center School for eight years and graduated from Marcus High School in 1938.

She married Wayne Mahoney on April 5, 1941, at the Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake. She worked at the ASCS office for 27 1/2 years, retiring in 1973. She had resided at the Heartland Care Center since July 1, 1998 and prior to this, she had been a resident of Cherokee for 62 years.

She was a member of Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church and Mount Pleasant Guild.

She is survived by two sons and their wives, Gary and Sherry Mahoney of San Antonio, Texas, and John and Carol Mahoney of Pierson; five grandchildren, Heidi Cramberg and her husband, Larry of San Antonio, Julie Cummings and her husband, Ryan of San Antonio, Marla Ulstad and her husband, Jeremy of Minneapolis, Lynn Wichers and her husbnad, Russ of Hull, and Matt Mahoney and his fiancee, Becky Wilson of Pierson; four great-grandchildren, Emily, Meghan, Michael and Jordan; a brother and his wife, John "Jack" and Evelyn Woodall of Marcus, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbnad, Wayne on July 20, 1986, and a brother Marlin Woodall.

Edith De Jong

Mrs. Edith De Jong, age 79, of Hull, passed away Thursday, March 21, at the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 23, at 1:30 p.m. at the First Reformed Church in Hull. The Rev. Verlyn Boone officiated.

Edith Marie was born Dec. 16, 1922, at Hull, the daughter of Benjamin J. and Johanna (Ten Haken) Bonestroo. She was raised at Hull, where she graduated from the public high school.

On Dec. 16, 1943, she married Arthur Edward De Jong at Hull. After World War II, they made their home in Hull, where she was a housewife and homemaker. "Art" passed away Jan. 15, 1992, in Sioux Center.

In May of 1998, Edith became a resident of Pleasant Acres.

Mrs. De Jong was a member of the First Reformed Church, where she participated in the women's organizations. She was also a member of the Auxillary of the Wegman-Koele American Legion Post, a member of the board of directors of the Hull Public.

Gershom D. Van Roekel

Gershom Van Roekel, age 85, of Hull, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 7, at the Sioux Center Community Hospital Nursing Facility.

A memorial service was held on on Saturday, Aug. 10, at the First Reformed Church in Hull. The Rev. Verlyn Boone will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at Hope cemetery in Hull. There was a family prayer service on Saturday morning at the church.

Visitation was held on Friday, with the family present at the church. Arrangements were with the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.

Gershom Donald was born April 25, 1917, at Sioux Center, the son of John G. and Sarah (Te Grotenhuis) Van Roekel. He was raised at Sioux Center, where he graduated from high school and helped his father on the farm.

On Feb. 26, 1941, he married Edna Alene Vermeer at Sioux Center. They farmed northeast of Hull. In July of 1969, they moved into Hull.

Gershom was a member of the First Reformed Church, where he was a teacher and long-time superintendent of the catechism classes. He also served as a Sunday School teacher.

He enjoyed woodworking.

Survivors include his wife; five children and their spouses, Beth and Dwayne Westra, of Fulda, Minn.; Marilyn and Jim Rausch, of Gunter, Texas; Carole and Walter Kilmanas, of San Jose, Calif.; Gene and Carol Van Roekel, of Hull; and Linn and Bradley Ver Meer, of Leawood, Kan.; eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; and five brothers and their wives, Warren and Lillian Van Roekel, of Sioux Center; Clinton and Flossie Van Roekel, of George; Merle and Joann Van Roekel, of Rock Rapids; The Rev. James and Erma Jean Van Roekel, of Urbandale; and Arlin and Vine Van Roekel, of Sioux Center.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers that memorials be directed to the Sioux Center Hospice or the Sioux County Cancer Society.

G. John Veen

G. John Veen, 89, of Sanborn, formerly of Sheldon, died Thursday, Aug. 1, at a Sioux City hospital.

Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 5, at First Reformed Church in Sheldon. The Revs. David Brower and Gordon Bloemendaal officiated.

Gerrit John Veen was born July 29, 1913, on a farm near Boyden, the son of Cornelius and Johanna (Rensink) Veen. He received his education in the Grant Township country school near Boyden.

On Aug. 20, 1936, he was united in marriage to Rena Bosman in Boyden. The couple made their home on a farm near Boyden. In 1946, they moved to a farm east of Sheldon. His wife, Rena, preceded him in death on April 23, 1988, in Sheldon.

He was united in marriage to Marie Vink on Jan 2, 1989, in Sheldon, where they resided. In October 2001, they moved to Sanborn.

He was a member of First Reformed Church, where he was a former elder and deacon. For several years he was the Floyd Township assessor and had also served as a board member for the Farmers Home Administration at both county and district levels. He was a member of the Flying Farmers Organization and the Civil Air Patrol. He enjoyed golfing. Since 1975, he enjoyed spending his winters in Arizona.

He is survived by his wife, Marie of Sanborn; two children and their spouses, Delores and Gene Eilers of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Galen and Elvira Veen of Cumming; four grandchildren, Misty Reznic, Cory Veen, Tana Harlan and Kyle Eilers; seven great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Herbert and Jean Veen of Sheldon; two sisters, Cornelia Douma of Sanborn, and Emma and her husband, George Mills of Hartley; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Delmar; his parents; a brother, Dick Veen; and two sisters, Bertha and Katherine Veen.

Helena Elizabeth Zomer

Helena Elizabeth Zomer, 96, died Wednesday, Aug. 7, at McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D. Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 10, at the Netherlands Reformed Church in Corsica, S.D.

Helena Elizabeth Zomer was born on Sept. 27, 1905, in Scheveningen, the Netherlands, the daughter of Cornelius and Petronella (Bal) Spaans. The family moved to Waupon, Wis., when Helena was 4 years old. They then moved to the Corsica, S.D., area when she was 12. Helena married Herman Zomer Sr. on Jan. 15, 1925, at Corsica. They farmed in the Corsica area. Herman died on Oct. 6, 1973. Helena moved to Rock Valley in 1994 where she lived until she moved to Valley Manor Nursing Home in Rock Valley in June of 2000.

Surviving relatives include two sons and their wives, Herman Jr. and Jeane Zomer of Rock Valley, Clarence and Marlene Zomer of Sioux Falls, S.D.; three daughters, Hermina Rozeboom of Rock Valley, Nellie and her husband Cozyn Rozeboom of Inwood, Betty Rozeboom of Rock Valley; daughter-in-law, Joane Zomer of Sioux Center; 61 grandchildren; 102 great-grandchildren; 21 great-great-grandchildren.

Helena was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herman; son, Cornie; two son-in-laws, Dick L. Rozeboom and Dick G. Rozeboom; one grandchild and five great-grandchildren.

David Lee De Zeeuw

David Lee De Zeeuw, 47, of Rock Valley, died suddenly Friday, Aug. 9, in Spirit Lake.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 13, at First Reformed Church in Rock Valley. The Rev. Michael Van Hamersveld officiated.

David Lee De Zeeuw was born June 26, 1955, in Sioux Center, the son of Stanley and Christine (Jansen) De Zeeuw. He attended school in Doon, Rock Valley Christian, Rock Valley Community High School and graduated from Indianola High School in 1974. David owned and operated a grain trucking business from 1976 to 1979.

He married Sandi Kreykes on May 27, 1977, in Sanborn. They began farming for Tom McGill in 1979. David had also farmed with Bill Koedam and was currently farming with Earl De Bey. He also worked the Sheldon Livestock sale barn in his spare time.

David was a lifetime member and a past deacon of First Reformed Church of Rock Valley. He enjoyed golfing and recent boating trips with his family. He was a regular at sporting events in the area and made sure he was always there if his children were involved. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was always teasing people. He had a zeal for life and lived his life to the fullest.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Sandi; a son, Kent De Zeeuw of Rock Valley; two daughters, Kristi and Karmen De Zeeuw of Rock Valley; his mother, Christine and her husband, Ed Van Maanen; a brother and his wife, Lyle and Helen De Zeeuw of Rock Valley; two sisters and their husbands, Dianne and Arlo Van Kley of Rock Valley, and Sylvia and Ron Kiel of Sioux City; four stepbrothers, Everett and his wife, Hedy Van Maanen, Marvin and his wife, Melinda Van Maanen, all of Doon, Randy and his wife, Sue Van Maanen of Oshkosh, Wis., and Brad Van Maanen of Rock Valley; three stepsisters and their husbands, Joan and Marvin Post of Doon, Mary Ann and Earl De Bey, and Linda and Bruce Kooima, all of Rock Valley; and many nieces and nephews.

David was preceded in death by his father, Stanley, and father-in-law, Harold Kreykes.
