Adrianna B. Dokter

Adrianna B. Dokter, 69, of Sioux Center died Wednesday, Aug. 7, at Sioux City hospital.

Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 12, at Faith Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center. The Rev. Bernie Haan officiated.

Adrianna was born May 11, 1933, in Hull, the daughter of Albert and Alice (Snieder) De Wit. She was raised on a farm near Hull and graduated from Western Christian High School in Hull. She attended Northwestern College in Orange City for two years, and also took some summer classes at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich. She then was a teacher at Rock Valley Christian School.

On June 27, 1956, she married Edwin D. Dokter in Hull, The made their home in Sioux Center, where she was a homemaker and active volunteer.

She was a charter member of Faith Christian Reformed Church. She was very active in the life of the church, including Women of Faith Circle. For 20 years, she participated in the Laotian Ministry.

Survivors include her husband; three children and their spouses, Shar and Gary Alsum and Jay and Kathy Dokter, all of Loveland, Colo., and Sue and Jerry Wilson of Central Lake, Mich.; seven grandchildren, Levi, James, Brittany and Andrew Alsum, and Alyssa, Justin and Jonathan Dokter; three sisters, Margaret and her husband John Meendering of Hull, Stephena Vander Werff of Sanborn, and Betty Vande Griend of Sioux Center; a brother and his wife, Harold and Tress De Wit of Hull; and a sister-in-law, Catherine De Wit of Hull.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Elmer De Wit; and a brother-in-law, Cornie Vander Werff.

Memorials may be directed to Laotian Ministries.

Herman Van Donkelaar

Mr. Herman Van Donkelaar, age 84, of Sioux Center, passed away Friday, Oct. 25, 2002, at the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull.

There will be a funeral service on Monday, Oct. 28, at 2:30 p.m., in the chapel of the First Reformed Church of Sioux Center. The Rev. Arnold Punt will officiate. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens cemetery in Sioux Center. Visitation will be after 3:00 p.m. Sunday, with the family present from 3:00pm to 5:00 p.m. at the Oolman Funeral Home in Sioux Center.

Herman was born July 18, 1918, in rural Hull, the son of Gerrit and Dora (Meyers) Van Donkelaar. He was raised at Perkins and Sioux Center, where he attended school.

On July 30, 1940, he married Christina De Koter at Maurice. During World War II, he served in the United States Army. They made their home in Maurice, where he was a carpenter for John Hoekstra. In 1958, they moved to Sioux Center, where he was employed by De Stigter Brothers Construction. During the 1970s, he and his wife also operated Herm and Chris' Cafe in Maurice. Mrs. Van Donkelaar passed away March 14, 1990, in Sioux City.

In 1996, Mr. Van Donkelaar became a resident of the Pleasant Acres Care Center.

Survivors include six children, Gerrit Van Donkelaar and his wife, Lylis, of Maurice; Carol and her husband, Junior VanĚt Hul, of Rock Valley; Nancy May of Spirit Lake; Debbie Van Donkelaar of Sioux Center; Bob Van Donkelaar and his wife, Del Rae, of Remsen; and Marcia and her husband, Steve Morphew, of South Boston, Va.; a son-in-law, Gerard Zeutenhorst of Rock Valley; 21 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Zeutenhorst, on Oct. 18, 1997; a grandson Nathan May; and three sisters, Kate Vander Stelt, Antonia Mulder, and Sena Altena.

John Schelling

John Schelling, 92, of Sioux Center died Friday, Oct. 18, at Sioux Center Community Hospital.

Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 21, at Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center. The Rev. G.M. de Leeuw officiated.

Mr. Schelling was born to Cornelius and Hendricka (Kastein) Schelling on April 12, 1910, west of Sioux Center. He was raised on the family farm and attended school in the Lebanon area. He married Hendrena Van Beek on Nov. 26, 1935, in Sioux Center. She preceded him in death on Dec. 16, 1986.

He was a member of the Netherlands Reformed Church of Sioux Center and served as a deacon for 12 years and an elder for 11 years. John was an avid reader. After retiring he did carpet laying and enjoyed woodworking and helped his sons on the farm.

John is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Gertrude and William Den Hoed of Canton, S.D.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Cornelius John and Esther Schelling of Hull, Albert and Sadie Schelling of Orange City and Harold and Wilhelmina Schelling of Sioux Center, 15 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Juliana Van Beek and Ella Marie Overeem, both of Sioux Center; sister-in-law, Edna Schelling of Sioux Center along with numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, John was preceded in death by an infant son, Cornelius J. Schelling; great-grandson, Logan James Maassen; six brothers, Rochus, B.D., William, Lane, Ralph and Paul Schelling; and three sisters, Emmetje Van Bochove, Fredrieka Vander Brink and Elizabeth Van Grootheest.

Nicholas Dean Kamminga

Nicholas Dean Kamminga, 69, of Dover, Del., formerly of Hospers, died of a heart attack on June 30, in Florida. He was on the first leg of a cross-country trip to visit relatives in Florida, Iowa and California.

Mr. Kamminga was born March 27, 1933, in Maurice, the son of Garrett and Sya (Hulst) Kamminga. He was a graduate of Hospers High School, where he excelled in basketball and baseball. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1954. One year later, he married Joan Schouten of Rock Valley.

He specialized in jet engine mechanic and completed several tours of duty during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged after 20 years of service, achieving the rank of master sergeant. After that, he owned several service stations in Delaware and managed paper routes for the Baltimore Sun, The Philadelphia Inquirer and The Wilmington Journal.

He is survived by his sons, Jeffrey and his wife, Mickey, of Warwick, R.I., and Gary of Fort Myers, Fla.; a grandson, Lucus; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan, in 1995; and a brother, Arnold, in 1986.

Harry Van Beek

Harry Van Beek, 84, died Saturday, Oct. 19, at Hegg Memorial Hospital in Rock Valley.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct. 23, at Faith Reformed Church in Rock Valley. The Rev. Jan Neels officiated.

Harry Van Beek was born April 1, 1918, near Rock Valley, the son of Gerrit and Clara (Buma) Van Beek. He worked with his father on the family farm near Rock Valley. Harry attended country school in the Rock Valley area.

He married Rena Den Boer on Nov. 3, 1944, in East Hudson, on the Den Boer farmstead. Together, they farmed north of Rock Valley for more than 50 years. They retired in 1989 and moved into Rock Valley.

Surviving relatives include his wifeRena of Rock Valley; two sons, Gerald of Renner, S.D., and Allan and his wife, Colleen, of Rock Valley and their children, Tyler, Bryce and Cassie; three daughters and their husbands, Hildonna and Tom Vande Pol of Sioux Center and their children, Julie and her husband, Doug Post, and Philip and Monica; Carolyn and Ken Gacke of Brandon, S.D., and their children, Shannon and Shane; and Kris and Brian Vande Hoef of Rock Valley and their children, Meghan, Erica, Kensy and Kaylee; a great-granddaughter, Emily Post; and a sister, Everdena and her husband, William S. Koedam.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers Pete, Nick, Mease and Simon; and a sister, Agnes Blom.

Greta Van Voorst

Greta Van Voorst, 76, of Sioux Center died Tuesday, Oct. 22, at Sioux Center Community Nursing Facility.

Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 25, at Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center. The Rev. Jan Neels of Heritage Reformed Church, Hull, officiated.

Mrs. Van Voorst was born to Tunis and Libbie (Van Den Brink) Van Der Weide at Kanawha, on Feb. 23, 1926. She was united in marriage to James Van Voorst in Sioux Center on Jan. 11, 1946.

Throughout their married life, Greta and James farmed in the Sioux Center and Hull area. They were blessed with 10 children. Greta also felt especially blessed by her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Over the years she loved to crochet a baby blanket for each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

After her children were raised, Greta did housekeeping for others for many years. She also lovingly looked after her husband of 56 years. She and Jim recently moved from their own home to Crown Pointe in Sioux Center.

In addition to being survived by her husband James Van Voorst of Sioux Center, she is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Lois and Alvin Zomer of Sioux Center, Shirley and Adrie "Dutch" Born of Sioux Center, and Lavonne and Harvey Spaans of Hull; five sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Carol Van Voorst of Sioux Center, Arlin Van Voorst and special friend, Vicky Coy of Adrian, Mo., Doug and Diane Van Voorst of Marionville, Mo., Tom and Annette Van Voorst of Maurice and Kevin and Angie Van Voorst of Newport, Minn.; two daughters-in-law; Audrey (Perry) Raman of Hull and Shirley Van Voorst of Rock Valley; 34 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Greta is also survived by her sister-in-law, Esther Tromp of Pella, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding Greta in death were two sons, Alvin and Timothy Van Voorst and an infant son, James Van Voorst, Jr.; daughter-in-law, Virginia Van Voorst; grandson-in-law, Clifford Vanden Berg; her parents and brother, William Van Der Weide.

Memorials may be directed to Chears Hospice and Home Health of Sioux Center or Heritage Reformed Christian School in Hull.
