Caroline Groeneweg, 87

Caroline Groeneweg, age 87, died Tuesday, April 1, at the Hegg Memorial Hospital in Rock Valley.

Funeral services were held Friday, April 4 at the First Reformed Church in Rock Valley. The Rev. Michael Van Hamersveld officiated.

Caroline Groeneweg was born Sept 13, 1915 in Hull, daughter of John A. and Melenda (De Vries) Scholten. She graduated from Sioux Center High School in 1933. Caroline worked for people in the Hull area doing household chores. She married Paul J. Groeneweg on Feb. 3, 1938 in Rock Valley. Caroline and Paul began their married life farming east of Rock Valley and later moved west of Rock Valley where they continued farming until their retirement in 1975. Caroline had worked as a cook at Hegg Memorial Hospital from 1968 to 1986. They moved into Rock Valley after retirement. Paul died on March 5, 1983.

Caroline was a charter member of the Mary Circle at the First Reformed Church.

Surviving relatives include her five children, Marlene and husband Tom Van Holland of Rock Valley, Karen and husband Dr. Joe Kragt of Bella Vista, Ariz., Wayne and wife Judy of Rock Valley, Norma and husband Rick Mack of Nevada, Joel and wife Corlis of Doon; 17 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.

Caroline was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Paul; one brother, Al Scholten; five sisters, Gertrude Oostenink, Sade Kempers, Malena Hogan, Germina Ver Meer and Janet Brouwer.

Sebianne Popma, 85

Funeral services were held Monday at the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City for Mrs. Sebianne Popma of Orange City. Mrs. Popma died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at her residence. She was 85.

Rev. Timothy Ouwinga officiated the service with interment at West Lawn cemetery in Orange City.

Sebianne Popma was born June 4, 1917, at Orange City, the daughter of Brunis and Jeanette (Van Peursem) Reinders. After the death of her father, her mother married Evert Reinders, who also raised her. She attended the Orange City Christian School and graduated from Northwestern Classical Academy in Orange City.

On Dec. 20, 1939, she married Delbert Thomas Popma at the family home near Carnes. They farmed there for 45 years and in 1984 moved into Orange City.

Mrs. Popma was a homemaker who assisted on the farm and was a clerk in several Orange City stores. She also belonged to the Monica Society.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Shardell (Marvin) Swets of Hull and Mary (Kenneth) Wiersma of Sioux Center; two sons and their wives, Dan (Marlys) Popma of Lynnville and James (Mary) Popma of Sioux Center; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and four brothers and sisters, John B. Reinders of Orange City, Gertrude Singer of South Bend, IN, Bernie Reinders of Orange City and Everly Visser of Orange City.

Memorials may be directed to the First Christian Reformed Church fellowship hall fund and Sioux County Hospice.

Fred L. Corbin, 56

Funeral services were held Monday at First Reformed Church in Sioux Center for Fred Corbin of Sioux Center. Mr. Corbin died April 3, 2003, near Chamberlain, SD. He was 56.

Fred L. Corbin was born Dec. 7, 1946, to Glenn and Dora (Nehring) Corbin in Mapeton, IA. He graduated from Maple Valley High School and attended Northwestern College in Orange City.

On July 29, 1967, he married Ruth L. Punt in Sioux Center. They settled in Sioux Center where he was employed by the city of Sioux Center for 33 years, many as the city's Water Superintendent.

Lisa Johnson, 54

Funeral services were held Monday at Tabernacle Baptist Church in George for Lisa Johnson of Rock Valley. She died Thursday (July 10, 2003) at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. She was 54.

Burial will be in Fairfield cemetery in Albert City.

Bertha Jonker-Docter, 96

Funeral services were held last Monday at First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City for Bertha Jonker Docter of that city. Mrs. Docter died Thursday (July 24, 2003) at the Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City. She was 96.

A memorial service was held with Rev. Timothy Ouwinga officiating.

Bertha Docter was born Oct. 27, 1906, in Tzummaren, Friesland, The Netherlands, the daughter of Fred and Agnes (De Jong) De Beer. She came to America when she was four-years-old.

She married Henry A. Jonker Jan. 27, 1927 in Orange City. He passed away Dec. 20, 1961. On June 27, 1972, she married Andrew Docter in Orange City. He passed away Dec. 23, 2000.

She was employed at DeVries Interiors and in later years she was a resident of the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City. Since 1997, she lived at the Heritage House.

Survivors include her five children, Arthur Jonker, and his wife, Carolyn, of Orange City; Elaine, and her husband, Bernard Hietbrink, of Bella Vista, AR; Wilfred Jonker, and his wife, Gertrude, of Rock Valley; Faye Pluim, of Sioux Center; and Terry Jonker, and his wife, Jan, of Plano, TX; a step-daughter and her husband, Della and Alvin Jelgerhuis, of Orange City; 14 grandchildren, four step-grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren, eight step-great-grandchildren; and eight step-great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Kenneth Pluim; a granddaughter, Gina Jonker; two sisters, Stella Bomgaars and Martha Schuller; and a brother, John De Beer.

Memorials may be directed to the Orange City Christian School.

John J. Driesen, 87

Funeral services were held Friday at First Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley for John J. Driesen of that city. Mr. Driesen died of a heart attack last Monday (July 28, 2003) at his residence. He was 87.

John Driesen was born Oct. 7, 1915 near Alvord, the son of James and Henrietta (Everboer) Driesen. He worked for his father until he married Nellie Gerritsen on March 5, 1937 in Orange City.

The couple lived southwest of Rock Valley, where he worked at Fred Dirks farm. They later lived in Rock Valley, where he worked for W.P.A. They also resided in California before starting his trucking business in 1953 in Rock Valley. He retired in 1978.

Mr. and Mrs. Driesen also worked as janitors at First Christian Reformed Church for 27 years.

He is survived by his wife, Nellie; three sons and their wives, Jim and Etta of Rock Valley, Alfred and Kathy of Mohave Valley, AZ, and Junior and Aleatha of Ripon, CA; three daughters and their husbands, Mina and Herb Bliek and Linda and Tim Rens, all of Sioux Falls, SD, and Hester and Herb Caswell of Le Mars; a brother, Ed Driesen of Remsen; two sisters, Jen Buma of Bellflower, Calif., and Tena Gerritsen of Chino, CA; 16 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and three sisters-in-law, Harriet Driesen of Sioux Center, Winnie Wielenga of Orange City, and Gladys Gerritsen of Spencer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters and a brother.

Marge Van Berkum, 64

Funeral services were held Tuesday at First Reformed Church in Rock Valley for Marge Van Berkum of that city. Mrs. Van Berkum died Saturday (Aug. 2, 2003) at Hegg Memorial Hospital. She was 64.

Rev. Mike Van Hamersveld officiated the service with burial in Valley View cemetery .

Marge Van Berkum was born June 2, 1939, at Ireton, the daughter of John and Grace (Zwaan) Bouma. She graduated from Western Christian High School in 1958 and attended Stewart's School of Hairstyling in Sioux Falls, SD.

She married Harold Van Berkum on March 10, 1961, at Rock Valley, where she owned and operated Marge's Beauty Nook for 43 years.

Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Vicki Barnes of McColl, SC, Kristi Moore of Rock Valley, and Mrs. Dan (Kelli) Groeneweg of Rapid City, SD; her mother, Grace Bouma of Rock Valley; two brothers, Leonard of Sioux Falls, SD and John of Hudsonville, MI; four sisters, Grace Vanden Heuvel and Mrs. Larry (Brenda) Eichmann, all of Sioux Falls, SD, Gerdena Dirksen of Sanborn and Mrs. Harlan (Betty) Groeneweg of Rock Valley; and eight grandchildren.
