Ed Driesen, 80

Funeral services were held Monday at Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City for Ed Driesen of Alton and formerly of Rock Valley. Mr. Driesen died Friday (Aug. 1, 2003) at Happy Siesta Nursing Home in Remsen. He was 80.

Rev. C. Orville Kool officiated the private family service with burial in Valley View cemetery in Rock Valley.

Edward J. Driesen was born Feb. 12, 1923, at Rock Valley, the son of James and Hendrikje (Everboer) Driesen, and was raised in Rock Valley.

He married Elsiena Kooima on Jan. 27, 1942, at Dakota City, NE and they farmed near Rock Valley until 1971, when they moved to Marcus, where he was employed as a salesman for Gross Implement. Mrs. Driesen died in 1984.

On May 22, 1987, he married Blanche Ann Mulder Vrieze at Alton, where they made their home. In 2001 he became a resident of Happy Siesta. His second wife died in January 2003.

Survivors include nine children, Jim and Jean Driesen of Hawarden, Sam and Joan Driesen of Rock Valley, Harlan and Priscilla Driesen of Doon, Ted and Arlene Driesen of Rock Valley, Joann and Larry Bauder of Hawarden, Duane and Sonja Driesen of Washta, Glenn and Cindy Driesen of Aurelia, Arlo Driesen and Lyle Driesen, both of Alton; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Lee (Florence) Vink of Rock Valley; 29 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Jen Buma of Bellflower, CA and Tena Gerritsen of Chino, CA.

He was preceded in death by his wives, one son, three brothers and five sisters.

Bertha Bomgaars, 98

Bertha Bomgaars, 98, of Hull passed away Monday, Sept. 29, at the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Oct. 2, at the First Reformed Church in Hull. The Rev. Verlyn Boone officiated. Interment followed at Hope cemetery in Hull.

Bertha was born in Hull on July 1, 1905, the daughter of Gerrit and Johanna (Haveman) Van Der Zwaag. She was raised in rural Hull.

On June 14, 1928, she married Henry N. Bomgaars at her parents' home. She and her husband farmed near Hull until 1965, when they moved into Hull. Mr. Bomgaars passed away March 22, 1978, in Sioux Center.

Mrs. Bomgaars was a member of the First Reformed Church, where she participated in the women's organizations. She and her husband enjoyed traveling and fishing. Bertha also liked doing handwork and gardening.

Survivors include her nephews and nieces, as well as Percy and Alice Bylsma and their family. Percy made his home with Bertha and Henry when he was a teenager and a young man.

In addition to her husband, Bertha was preceded in death by her brother, Clarence Van Der Zwaag; and her sister, Helena Van Veldhuizen.

Anna Mae Goeringer, 83

Anna Mae Goeringer, 83, of Sheldon passed away Wednesday, Sept. 24, at the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull.

There was a memorial service on Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull. The Rev. Brian Keepers officiated.

Anna Mae was born Nov. 29, 1919, in rural Hull, the daughter of Harry H. and Grace (Shaffer) Wallinga. She was raised in Hull.

On April 1, 1939, she married Clarence "Tyne" Bos at Hartley. They farmed in the Hull and Boyden areas until Mr. Bos passed away in 1966.

Anna Mae then moved to Sheldon, where she was a nurse aide at the hospital.

On July 24, 1972, she married Arthur Goeringer at Nashua. They made their home in Sheldon. Mr. Goeringer passed away in 1996 in Sioux City.

On Aug. 7, 2001, Mrs. Goeringer became a resident of Pleasant Acres.

She was a member of the Bethel Reformed Church in Sheldon and a volunteer at the Oak Park Care Center in Sheldon. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting and being outdoors.

Survivors include a granddaughter and her husband, Laurie and Gregory Pitzer of Houston, Tex.; two brothers and their wives, Donald and Verna Wallinga of Hospers, and Arnold and Shirley Wallinga of Hull; a sister-in-law, Marie Wallinga of Hull; and several nephews and nieces.

In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her son, Merlyn, at age 32; and two brothers, Harold and Henry Wallinga.

Memorials are being directed to the Bethel Reformed Church.

Wilmer Fluit, 70

Wilmer Fluit, Sr., 70, of rural Rock Rapids died Saturday, Sept. 20, at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Sept. 24, at the Netherlands Reformed Church in Rock Valley.

Survivors include his wife Sylvia; sons Harlan and Larry of Inwood, Dwaine of Marshfield, Mo., and Wilmer Jr. of Doon; daughter Mrs. John (Sandra) Bakker of Hull; brothers Clarence of Luverne, Minn., and John of Inwood; sisters Mrs. Ladell (Anna Marie) Kaster of Hull and Mrs. Greg (Joyce) Heitrick of Mountain Lake, Minn.; and sisters-in-law Liz Fluit of Lynden, Wash., and Deana Fluit of Rock Rapids.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to NRC School.

Bernice De Groot, 81

Bernice De Groot, 81, of Rock Valley died Sunday, Sept. 28, at Valley Manor Nursing Home in Rock Valley.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct. 1, at First Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley, with the Rev. Paul Bakker officiating.

Bernice was born Jan. 23, 1922, near Rock Valley, the daughter of Bert and Winnie (Hubers) Vanden Berg. She married Reuben De Groot on June 4, 1942, at Rock Valley. After World War II, Bernice and Reuben lived in Rock Valley where they owned and operated a Standard Oil Business. Bernice was a lifelong member of the First Christian Reformed Church and was active in the Ruth Circle. In her spare time, Bernice enjoyed visiting with the residents at Valley Manor and homebound friends. Reuben died Jan. 11, 1978. Bernice moved to Valley Manor on Jan. 10, 2003.

Survivors include three sons and their wives: Dwaine and Linda of Rock Valley, Roger and Mary of Hull, and Kevin and Diana of Rock Valley; a daughter and her husband, Wanda and Fred Woelber of Sheldon; two sisters, Gertrude De Ruyter of Rock Valley, and Winifred and her husband Dick Altena of Ireton; sisters-in-law Marie and her husband Don Ver Hoeven of Inwood, and Priscilla Lockhorst of Ireton; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Bernice was preceded in death by her husband Reuben; brother Gerrit Vanden Berg; and two sisters, Celia Vande Kamp and Johanna Altena.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Sioux County Hospice.

Wilmer Altena, 74

Wilmer Altena, 74, of Sioux Center, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Sept. 30, at the Sioux Center Community Hospital.

A memorial service was held Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Carmel Reformed Church of Carmel.

The Altena family requests memorials be directed to the New Horizon Fund, c/o Carmel Reformed Church.

Wilmer Altena was born Aug. 11, 1929, to Sam and Grace (Heynen) Altena near Maurice. Wilmer was raised on the family farm near Sioux Center. He attended country school through third grade and completed his elementary education at the Sioux Center Christian School. He graduated from Western Christian High School in 1947.

Wilmer married Kathleen Franken in Sioux Center at the First Reformed Church on Jan. 18, 1950. They made their home in Carmel until June 1988. Since then, they have lived in Sioux Center.

Wilmer loved being a mechanic. He was employed by the Franken Garage, Niessink and Kempers, and Hi-Way Chevrolet. He retired in 1994.

Wilmer was a member of the Carmel Reformed Church. He served on the consistory, taught Sunday school, and was a member of the Men's Brotherhood.

Wilmer enjoyed shooting pool with family and friends, bowling, golfing, gardening and attending his grandchildren's events. He loved reminiscing, and was an animated story-teller. His kind voice and hearty laughter will be missed by all.

Survivors include his wife Kathleen (Franken) Altena of Sioux Center; daughter Rose Altena of Kansas City; daughter and son-in-law Deb and Elson Schut of Sioux Center; son and daughter-in-law Dan and Sandi Altena of Sioux Center; son Dave Altena of Sioux City; and 11 grandchildren: Aaron Lubach, Joe Lubach, Amber Schut, Katelyn Schut, Courtney Schut, Dustin Altena, Mick Altena, Jaime Altena, Niki Altena, Som Altena and Kaida Altena. Wilmer is also survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law, Stan and Elaine Altena, and Mark and Ardith Altena, all of Sioux Center; a sister and brother-in-law, Julie and John Calsbeek; and two sisters-in-law, Joanne Altena of Ireton and Nellie Altena of Sioux Center.

Wilmer was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Wayne and Senard; sister Julene Shirley; and infant daughter Kathy Altena.
