Richard Van Zee, 78

Richard H. Van Zee, 78, of Sioux Center, died Thursday, Dec. 11, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 13, at the Free Grace Reformed Church of Middleburg, with the Rev. Stephen Breen officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens cemetery of Sioux Center.

The Van Zee family requests memorials be directed to the Free Grace Reformed Church Building Fund.

Richard H. Van Zee was born on May 15, 1925, to Dick and Sarah (Te Paske) Van Zee in Sanborn. Richard received his education through the eighth grade in area country schools.

He married Lucille Vanden Hull on Nov. 4, 1948. The couple had just celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary with their children.

Richard lived in Middleburg where he owned and operated his own trucking business known as Van Zee Trucking for 28 years. Richard also farmed and raised livestock over the years. After retirement, Richard and Lucille had moved to Sioux Center.

Richard loved life; he loved his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. For the past 13 years he worked part-time driving for Sioux Automation in Sioux Center. Richard enjoyed driving around the countryside, drinking coffee and playing cards with friends.

Richard was a member of Free Grace Reformed Church of Middleburg for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Lucille; three sons and daughters-in-law: Ronald and Thelma, and Duane and Beverly all of Sioux Center, and Robert and Nancy of Orange City; along with his 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Richard is also survived by his sister, Arta Behrens of Marshall, Minn.; brother and sister-in-law, Ervin and Dora Van Zee of Sioux Center; three sisters-in-law: Wilma Van Zee of Glenwood, Minn.; Josephine Van Zee of Browerville, Minn.; Doris Van Zee of Boonville, Ind., and numerous nieces and nephews.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Elizabeth Skoff; three brothers: Edward, Henry and Sylvester Van Zee; and four grandchildren.

Ella Loverink, 90

Ella Loverink, 90, of Rock Valley died Tuesday, Dec. 9, at Hegg Memorial Hospital in Rock Valley.

Services were held Saturday, Dec. 13, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley, with the Rev. Roger Sparks officiating. Burial was at Valley View cemetery .

Ella Loverink was born March 15, 1913, to Peter and Lizzie (Travoli) Boer, in Rock Valley.

She was united in marriage to Hubert Loverink on Feb. 1, 1945, in Rock Valley. She farmed with Hubert until his death April 27, 1977. She then worked as a foster grandparent at Hope Haven for 25 years. She was well known as the "Sloppy Joe Lady" at Green Acres.

She was a lifelong member of First Christian Reformed Church. She was active in circle and ladies aid. She enjoyed visiting with people, the morning coffee crew, playing UNO with the residents at Hope Haven and especially spending time with her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed spending time with Harold Boer and Betty Boer.

She is survived by a son, John (Suzan) Loverink of Rock Valley; a daughter, Lavina (Gerald) Brands of Inwood; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; a niece, Betty Boer of Rock Valley; and a nephew, Harold Boer of Sioux Center.

Joe Van Veldhuizen, 81

Joe Van Veldhuizen, 81, of Burlington, formerly of Rock Valley, died Tuesday, Dec. 9, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa.

Services were held on Monday, Dec. 15, at Trinity Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley. Burial was at Valley View cemetery , with military rites.

Nell Boterhoek, 97

Mrs. Nell Boterhoek, 97, of Hospers, passed away Monday, Feb. 2, at the Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City.

There was a memorial service on Thursday, Feb. 5, at the First Presbyterian Church in Hospers. The Rev. Brian Janssen officiated.

Nell was born Feb. 7, 1906, in Ede, Gelderland, the Netherlands, the daughter of Gysbert and Aartje (Vander Sanden) Van Veldhuizen. She came to America when she was 2 years old. She lived at Sioux Center, Hull, Middleburg, Bigelow (Minnesota), Allendorf and Sanborn.

On Feb. 25, 1931, she married Herbert J. Nieuwenhuis at Hospers. She helped her husband on the farm until his death on Nov. 4, 1942, at Hospers.

On Sept. 10, 1952, she married Neal Boterhoek at Hospers. They first resided on Nell's farm and then moved into Hospers. Neal passed away on Sept. 16, 1976, at Primghar.

In 1997, Nell became a resident of the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City. Since November of 2002, she lived at the Heritage House.

Mrs. Boterhoek was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She was a faithful servant in her church and community.

Survivors include her son and his wife, Eugene and Evelyn Nieuwenhuis of Wheat Ridge, Colo.; her daughter and her husband, Arlene and Dennis Punt of Orange City; a step-daughter, Mathilda Harmelink of Arvada, Colo.; a step-son and his wife, Henry and Harriet Boterhoek of Hospers; seven grandchildren and their spouses, 13 great-grandchildren, 13 step-grandchildren and their spouses, 29 step-great-grandchildren, nine step-great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Johanna Prins of Sanborn; two sisters-in-law, Josina Van Veldhuizen of Sheldon, and Margaret Van Veldhuizen of Northwood; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husbands and parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Evert, John, Garrett, Henry, Gysbert, and Ben Van Veldhuizen; a sister, Martha Kuiper, a step-daughter and her husband, Myrtle and Ben Lamfers; and a step-son-in-law, Robert Harme-link.

Memorials may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church or Hope Haven.

Alice De Goei, 92

Mrs. Alice De Goei, 92, of Orange City, passed away Monday, Feb. 2, at the Orange City Municipal Hospital.

A memorial service was held on Thursday, Feb. 5, at the First Reformed Church Chapel in Orange City. The Rev. David Ter Beest officiated. Interment was prior to the service at Memory Gardens cemetery in Sioux Center.

Alice, along with her twin sister, Johanna, was born March 8, 1911, at Sioux Center, the daughter of Gerrit G.A. and Hattie (Vande Berg) Van Roekel. She was raised in Sioux Center, where she graduated from high school. She then attended Normal Training Classes and exercised her passion for teaching children in rural schools.

On June 15, 1933, she married Art De Goei at Sioux Center. The couple made their home in the rural areas of Sioux Center, Rock Rapids and Middleburg. They also spent one year in California. In 1952, they moved to Orange City, where she was employed at the Municipal Hospital, the Dutch Oven Bakery, and the Pioneer Memorial Home. Art passed away on July 14, 1987, at Orange City.

Alice spent 10 wonderful years living at the Pioneer Memorial Home, and the last seven years at the Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City, where she greatly appreciated Dr. Kamstra and the nursing staff.

Mrs. De Goei was a member of the First Reformed Church. She was as an avid reader, and enjoyed gardening and flowers. She was known for her lovely knitting and crocheting, donating many items to the hospital bazaars. She was devoted to her children and grandchildren, and was looking forward to her 18th great-grandchild, due in February.

She is survived by four children: Gilbert De Goei and his wife, Shirley, of Sheldon, Delores "Dee" and her husband, Bob Van Driel, of Minneapolis Minn., Alyce Faye Vander Stoep of Orange City, and Arthur Dale De Goei and his wife, Mary, of Springdale, Ark.; 13 grandchildren: Scott De Goei of Sheldon; Gail Vander Hamm of Ireton; Cory Van Driel of Isle, Minn.; Troy Van Driel and Wade Van Driel, both of Minneapolis; Sarah Dean of Hudson, Wisc.; Jack Vander Stoep of Columbus, Ohio; Jill Pluim of Orange City; Alyson Vander Stoep of Seattle, Wash.; Emily Vander Stoep of Manhattan Beach, Calif.; Heath De Goei, of Irvine, Calif.; and Hilarie Glass and Travis De Goei, both of Omaha, Neb.; 17 great-grandchildren; a brother, John G.A. Van Roekel of Sioux Center; a sister, Jean Mieras of Boyden; and a sister-in-law, Irene Van Roekel of Sioux Center.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Junior, in 1940; a son-in-law, Donald Vander Stoep; two brothers, Abe and Gerrit Van Roekel; and three sisters, Mina Kroon, Jeanette Kraayenbrink and Johanna Klein.

Catherine Vos

Catherine Vos, 82, of Sioux Center died Sunday, April 4, at Sioux Center Community Hospital. Services were held Thursday at the First Reformed Church in Sioux Center, with the Rev. Roger Voskuil officiating. Burial was in Memory Gardens cemetery

Tryntje "Catherine" Vos was born May 26, 1921, near Hull,. to Henry and Tryntje "Kate" (Vis) Leusink. She was raised near Hull where she attended nearby country schools.

She was united in marriage to Alfred "Bill" Beukelman on Feb. 21, 1945, in Middleburg. The couple lived in Sioux Center, where he was employed as a truck driver. They were blessed with two children. On Nov. 29,1948, Bill preceded her in death after a truck accident took his life..

She married Steven Vos on Jan. 18, 1952, in Sioux Center. The couple each blended their families of two children and shortly after their marriage moved to Lakewood, Calif. In Lakewood, she worked as a cook in a school kitchen. In 1980, they returned to Sioux Center and in recent years she enjoyed working as a greeter at the Sioux Center Wal-Mart.

In her spare time, she liked working on crochet, beadwork and quilting projects. She was a member of the First Reformed Church.

Surviving is her husband of 52 years, Steve Vos of Sioux Center; a daughter and her husband, Karen and Chuck Baumbusch of Hacienda Heights, Calif.; a son and his wife, Arnold and Cheryl Beukelman of Sioux Center; a stepdaughter and her husband, Janice and Phil Cohen of Riverside, Calif.: a stepson, Harvey Vos of Orange County, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Hattie Berghorst of Hull, and Jeanette Leusink of Sioux Center; three sisters-in-laws, Genevieve Leusink, Greta Kooi and Tena Leusink, all of Sioux Center; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her first husband, she was preceded in death by brothers, Gerrit J. William and Johnny Leusink; brothers and their wives, Peter and Ann Leusink and Gerrit H. and Gertrude Leusink; a sister, Grace De Weerd; and sisters and their husbands, Henrietta and John Driesen and Gerti and Abraham Beukelman Jr.
