Walter H. Martens
Funeral Services for Walter H. Martens, 88, will be 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 25, 2010, at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, Davenport. Burial will be at the National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport. Walter died Sunday, February 21, 2010 at the Kahl Home for the Aged after a brief illness.
Walter Herman Martens was born icon March 10, 1921 in Davenport, the son of George and Mamie (Otto) Martens. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Loter on December 4, 1941 in Davenport at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.
He proudly served our country in the Army during World War II. in the Philippines.
Walter was employed as a meat cutter at the Eagles store on East Locust and retired in 1973 from the Rock Island Arsenal as a tool grinder after more than 28 years.
In his spare time, Walter enjoyed refinishing furniture and bass fishing. He was an avid bowler, enjoyed cards, Ping-Pong, and was a devoted Hawkeye fan.
Memorials may be made to Diabetes Association or the Kahl Home for the Aged.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Wallace and the Kahl Home for their special care and compassion shown to the Martens family. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, Davenport; daughters, Sharon (Jim) Hancock, Barbara (Roger) Ossowski, and Katie Bloomer, all of Davenport; sons, Jim (Teresa) Martens, Bettendorf and Bruce (Gloria) Martens, Davenport; 15 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers and sisters.

Nancy McConnell
Graveside services celebrating the life of Nancy McConnell, 75, a resident of Davenport, will be held Privately at Davenport Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Good Samaritan or the Scott Co. Humane Society. Nancy passed away Sunday, February 21, 2010 at her home after an extended illness.
Nancy was born icon April 23, 1934 in Rock Island, IL, the daughter of Carl and Mary A. (Elliott) Burton. She was united in marriage to Terrance “Terry” McConnell on February 27, 1964 in Davenport.
Nancy was devoted to her family and caring for children and seniors throughout her lifetime. After taking care of her parents during their senior years in her home for 10 years, she served over 20 years as a nurse with the Davenport school system and at Good Samaritan, until her illness.
Survivors include her loving husband Terry, and their 5 daughters Donna Mooney, Sue Britton, Theresa “Terri” Clay, Kimberly “Kim” Kingsley all of Davenport and Brenda Wolinski, Burleson, TX; 9 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, her parents and 3 sisters.
The family gives special thanks to all for your care and support, especially Dr. Sy, Dr. Trieber and her special friends Ruby, Lisa, Nellie and Shirley.

Amanda Silverman
Memorial services to celebrate the life of Amanda Elizabeth Silverman, 21, a resident of Davenport will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 26, 2010 in the All Faith Chapel at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home. Immediately following the service the family will greet friends at the funeral home for one hour.
Amanda died unexpectedly on Monday, February 22, 2010 in Davenport.
Amanda Elizabeth Silverman was born icon November 17, 1988 in Davenport a daughter of Alden E. and Judy J. (Presley) Silverman.
She graduated from Davenport North High School.
Amanda had a tremendous love and gift with animals. She was a dedicated worker in the field of animal care. She was a perfectionist and took great pride and satisfaction in the grooming and showing of dogs. She was a member of the Scott County Kennel Club, and the Collie Club of America.
She will always be remembered lovingly by her family for her infectious smile, beautiful personality and simple innocence. She will be greatly missed.
Memorials can be made to the family in AmandaÂ’s name for a future memorial gift.
Those left to honor her memory include her mother, Judy Silverman, Davenport; a sister and brother-in-law, Tiffany and Steve Davis, Baltimore, Maryland; brothers, Ryan Silverman, Los Angles, California and Jeffrey Silverman Presley, Chicago, Illinois; her loving niece and nephews, Abigail, Daniel and Lucas Davis; as well as her beloved God family, the Newman family.

James D. Broderick
Jim Broderick, 77, passed away Tuesday, February 23, 2010, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Saturday, February 27, 2010, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Waukee, of which he was a lifelong member, with burial to follow at Waukee Cemetery. Jim was born icon on June 5, 1932, in Des Moines to Leo and Honora (Maloney) Broderick. He graduated from St. Thomas Academy in St. Paul and served in the US Navy from 1951 - 1955. Jim married Vivian June Hines of Washington, Iowa in 1959, and made their home in Waukee where they raised their family. In addition to farming, he was employed at Qwest Communications and owned and operated Broderick's Bread Basket with his wife.
Jim was a member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus, National Farm Organization, and the Telephone Pioneers.
Jim enjoyed sports of all kinds, especially those that involved his children and grandchildren. He will be remembered as a loving Father and Grandfather.
Jim is survived by his children, Mike (Louanne) Broderick, Theresa Broderick, and Margaret Diehl, all of Waukee, Joe (Beth) Broderick of Dubuque, Rita (Tim) Glahn of Johnston, Brenda Broderick and Matt (Sara) Broderick, both of Chicago, Denise Broderick and Shane (Anne) Broderick, both of Des Moines, and Shannon Broderick of St. Paul; his siblings, Mary K. "Tootsie" (Fran) Riley of Davenport, Jody (Bill) McCarthy of West Des Moines and Pat (Suzy) Broderick of Rock Island, IL; grandchildren, Jake, Jim, Leo, Molly, Marty, Shane, Danny, Clare, Sally, Vivian, Katie, Joe, David and Charlie; and one great- grandchild, Bradley; and sister-in-law, Norma Broderick. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Vivian; son, Martin; and his brother, Ed.

Donald "Rick" Martin
Donald '“Rick'” Martin, 63, a resident of Davenport passed away unexpectedly Thursday, February 25, 2010 in Davenport.
A luncheon to celebrate his life will be noon this Sunday, February 28, 2010 at the Knights of Columbus, 1111 W. 35th Street, Davenport.
Following Rick’s wishes and instructions there will be no visitation or services and cremation rites will be accorded.
Rick was born icon November 3, 1946 in Iowa Falls, Iowa, a son of John R. and Mary (McElroy) Martin. He graduated from Western Illinois University, Macomb, Illinois.
Rick retired from the Rock Island Arsenal Procurement Division following many years of service. He had also been employed by TACOM in Detroit, Michigan during part of his government career.
He was an avid golfer, and also enjoyed walking and running. He had participated in several Bix 7 road races and Quad City Marathons.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to a charity of your choice in Rick’s name.
Survivors include siblings and their spouses, Phillip (Ellen) Martin, Clifford (Sue) Martin, Vincent (Jan) Martin, Matthew (Karen) Martin, Christopher Martin, Amy (Bill) Kellenberger, Diana (Robert) Hester, Martha (Ed) Schlue, Joe (Shelly) Martin, and a sister-in-law, Pamela Martin; 28 loving nieces and nephews, and 24 great nieces and great nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Robert “Steve” Martin.

Jerome "Jerry" Kurtenbach
Jerome Joseph Kurtenbach, a resident of Davenport passed into eternal life at the age of 95, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf, Iowa at 8:45 a.m. Friday, February 26, 2010.
Funeral services and a Mass of Christian Burial for Jerry will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, 417 Main Street, Davenport. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home. There will be a prayer service Tuesday at the funeral home at 6:30 p.m. that all are encouraged to attend.
Jerome was born icon a son of William and Mary (Diedrich) Kurtenbach on August 5, 1914, in St. Bernard, Nebraska. He had two brothers, Art and Jim. He was united in marriage to Celine Nahra in June 18, 1939, in Bettendorf. She preceded him in death on March 18, 1986. Together Jerome and Celine had four children, Marilyn, Sharon, William and Sunday.
Jerry was a hard worker, often times working several jobs to make ends meet for his family. He was employed by the Civilian Conservation Corps, Herman Nelson Fan Company, Alcoa, his own Fuel Oil Company, and finally at the Rock Island Arsenal where he worked for 33 years, and never once missing a day of work.
Unbeknownst to his family he received his high school diploma at the age of 69. He had not had the opportunity to fulfill this educational milestone due to the economic period of his time.
He was an avid dancer and loved music. Often times spending hours with family around the player piano singing songs. He loved to spend time in his garden growing vegetables for his family and friends. He never showed up to someone’s home without a bag of tomatoes in his hand. He will always be remembered for his infectious smile, sense of humor, and for always being impeccably dressed.
Jerry enjoyed attending the theatre, bird hunting and watching the Nebraska Corn Huskers and the Chicago Cubs. Even though he worked tirelessly and was the father of four, he still found time to involve himself in the community. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, Plus 60, numerous card clubs, CASI, Federal Employee Worker’s Union, and St. Anthony’s Parish.
Jerome was a husband, father, grandfather, farmer, business man, a Golden Glove Boxer, a phenomenal dancer, a lover of animals, a man of great wisdom, strength, faith and perseverance.
He was remarried to Elizabeth “Bette” Figgins Kindhart on October 13, 1992. He gained two stepchildren, three step-grandchildren and numerous great step-grandchildren.
Memorials can be made to Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Jerry’s name.
Those left to honor Jerome’s memory include his wife, Bette Kurtenbach, Davenport; his children, Sharon Wagner, Bettendorf; William Kurtenbach, Wausau, Wisconsin; and Sunday Combs, Davenport. His grandchildren, Scott Wagner, Craig Wagner, Robert Wagner, Kelly Wagner, Danny Wagner, Kimberly Furness, Marnie Huff, Farrah Ketron, Ashley Eaker, Glen O’Shea, Darcy O’Shea, Polly O’Shea, Sarah O’Shea and Chris O’Shea, and a brother, Jim Kurtenbach. Stepchildren, Dick (Diana) Kindhart, Hurricane, West Virginia; and Dianne (Gary) Graham, Sherrard, Illinois; three step-grandchildren, Drew Larson, Amanda Wilson, Nick Larson, and numerous step great grandchildren.
In addition to his first wife Celine Kurtenbach, he was also preceded in death by a daughter, Marilyn O’Shea, his brother, Art Kurtenbach, sons-in-law, Steventon Wagner and David O’Shea and his grandson, Tony O’Shea.
The family wants to extend a sincere thank you to the nurses and staff at Genesis East 4th floor, Dr. Ed Motto, and the nurses and staff at Clarissa C. Cook for the comfort and care they provided to the family.

Violette Jackson
Private memorial services and a Mass of Christian Burial for Violette Jeannine Jackson, 73, a resident of Bettendorf, will be held Thursday, March 4, 2010 at St. John Vianney Catholic Chuch, Bettendorf. In keeping with her wishes, cremation rites have been accorded and inurnment will happen at a later date. Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Violette died Sunday, February 28, 2010 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf with her family by her side.
Violette Sulpicy was born icon on February 24, 1937 in Fouras, France, the daughter of André and Marie (Meynardie) Sulpicy. Violette met Edward R. Jackson while he was stationed in the service in France and they were united in marriage on July 6, 1957 in Fouras, France. They have shared over 52 years of marriage together.
Violette worked as a manager for Younkers in the former Duck Creek Shopping Plaza. She retired from there in 1995 after 20 years of service. In her free time, Violette enjoyed cross-stiching, doing puzzles, and painting. She cherished most the time she was able to be with her family, especially her seven grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be made to Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.
Survivors include her loving husband, Ed, Bettendorf; children and their spouses, Christine (Jackson) and Jason Bobst, Des Moines, IA and Steven and Cherri Jackson, Bettendorf; grandchildren, Michael, Kyle, Nicholas, and Joshua Bobst, and Samantha, Shawn, and Seth Jackson; her father, André Sulpicy, brothers, Gaston (Vivian) Sulpicy, Michel Sulpicy, and Jacques (Rabia) Sulpicy, all of France; sister-in-laws Sylvia Berger and Barb (Jim) Murphy and very dear friends, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mooney, Bettendorf.
Violette was preceded in death by her mother and an infant son, Gregory Allen Jackson. May they rest in peace.
The family extends its heartfelt appreciation to the nurses and staff at Manor Care-Utica Ridge and Clarissa C. Cook House, Bettendorf for the care and compassion shared with our wife, mom and grandma Vee.

Pierre "Pierre" Aldershof
Military Graveside services for Pierre P. Aldershof, 80, of Eldridge, will be 2:30 p.m. (Today) Tuesday March 2, 2010 at National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal where the American Legion Post 26 will conduct the service. Anyone wishing to join the family for services should meet at 2:00 p.m. at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport. Honoring his wishes there will be no visitation. Mr. Aldershof passed away Saturday, February 28, 2010 at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus.
Piere Peter Aldreshof was born icon January 14, 1930 in Iowa City, a son of Hendrik and Jantje (Klinker) Aldershof. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Pierre sold insurance for over 45 years, with Combined Insurance Company of America out of Chicago, IL
He is survived by his son, Patrick and his two grandsons, Austin and Avery Aldershof all of Davenport. His parents and a brother, Clark preceded him death.
