Funeral services to celebrate the life of Helen J. Mirfield, 75, of Davenport, will be 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 17th, 2010 at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport. Visitation will be prior to services from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Burial will be in National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal where the Q.C. Vietnam Veterans Post 299 will conduct military graveside services. Helen passed away Saturday, March 13, 2010 at the Good Samaritan Center, Davenport. Memorials may be made to any Quad City area No Kill animal shelter.
Helen Jean Mirfield was born icon July 7th, 1934 in Davenport, a daughter of Stanley C. and Marian R. (Johnson) Mirfield. She proudly served our country in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955 when she was honorably discharged as a corporal, WAC. Helen then began work on the Rock Island Arsenal as a clerk typist and after 36 years of faithful service retired in 1989 as an Industrial Specialist for weapons. She also had the honor of being crowned Queen of the RIA sweet heart dance in 1958.
Survivors include three sisters, Janice (James) Jacobsen, Davenport, Carol Lesley, Rock Island and Christine (Frank) Whitney-Metsker of Bettendorf as well as 5 nieces and 5 nephews. Her parents, a brother Douglas Mirfield and her beloved dogs, Dollie and Corkey preceded her in death.

SSgt. Timothy M. Vastine

December 9, 1982 - July 29, 2012

Fort Eustis, Virginia
Funeral Services and Mass of Christian Burial for Staff Sergeant Timothy M. Vastine, 29, U.S. Army, of Fort Eustis, VA, will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, August 6, 2012 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, 2618 Boies Ave., Davenport. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation will be 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 5, 2012 at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, 614 Main St., downtown Davenport. Staff Sergeant Vastine died unexpectedly on Sunday, July 29, 2012 at Sentara Regional Medical Center, Williamsburg, Virginia.
Timothy Michael Vastine was born icon December 9, 1982 in Davenport, the son of Joel and Debra (Barnard) Vastine, and grew up in Blue Grass. He graduated from Davenport West High School in 2001and entered Active duty in the United States Army on April 2, 2003 at the age of 20. After serving 4 years, he met and married Amy Louise Pierce, of Brandon, Florida, and became the friend, mentor and father of her son, Aiden.
Over a period of nine years, Staff Sergeant Vastine served his country in varying capacities, capturing the laughs, smiles and hearts of everyone who had the privilege of working with him. In 2003, he completed Basic Training at Fort Knox, Kentucky and graduated from the United States Army Aviation Logistics School, Fort Eustis, Virginia, as a 15T, Utility Helicopter Mechanic. During his enlistment, overseas and stateside assignments included: C CO. 2-52 Avn. Regt., 17th Aviation Brigade, Camp Humphreys, South Korea (October 2003-June 2005); 602nd Aviation Support Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Stanley, South Korea (June 2005-October 2005); 2-227th Aviation Regiment, 1st Cavalry Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas (October 2005-April 2012). While assigned to the 2nd Cavalry Brigade, Staff Sergeant Vastine served as a UH-60 Crew Chief, Flight Platoon Sergeant, and Technical Inspector which included two tours to Iraq from September 2006 to December 2007 and April 2009 to April 2010. His last assignment as an Instructor/Writer with B CO 2-210th Avn. Regt., 128th Aviation Brigade, from December 2010 to July 2012, would allow him to share his experience and knowledge with the future maintainers of Army Aviation.
His awards and decorations earned during his time of service include: Air Medal (numerical device 2), Army Commendation Medal (4th award), Army Achievement Medal (2nd award), Meritorious Unit Citation (2nd award), Army Good Conduct Medal (3rd award), National Defense Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal (3rd award), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korea Defense Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon (numerical device 2), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (numerical device 3), and the Air Crew Member Badge.
Staff Sergeant Vastine has long been described by his fellow Soldiers as, "a man who does not fail at any tasks, and always put everyone's needs before his own." More importantly, Staff Sergeant Vastine loved being a Non-Commissioned Officer. No matter the task saturation or degree of difficulty, he always managed to see the positive side of any situation and bring a level of creative humor to his Soldiers and peers.
Staff Sergeant Vastine was a member of Ducks Unlimited and enjoyed hunting, fishing and riding or working on his motorcycle or boat. He enjoyed spending his spare time hanging out with his friends and his family.
Memorials in Tim's memory may be made to St. Alphonsus Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife, Amy Vastine and son Aiden, both of Virginia; his father and step-mother, Joel and Jana Vastine, Blue Grass; sisters, Christina Hagedorn, Davenport, Veronica (Jonathan) Schlue, Davenport and a brother, Anthony "Tony" Vastine, Blue Grass, IA; and his grandparents, Merle "Mick" and Pat Vastine, Davenport; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother, Debra Vastine in 2001 and his maternal grandparents, Herb and Sharon Barnard. May they rest in peace.

Edward C. "Ed" McDonnell

August 8, 1925 - June 30, 2012

Gilbert, Arizona
Funeral services and a Mass of Christian Burial for Edward C. "Ed" McDonnell, 86, a recent resident of Gilbert, Arizona and a longtime resident of Davenport will be 10: 00 a.m. Saturday, July 7, 2012, at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 916 E. Rusholme Street, Davenport. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, DeWitt, Iowa. There will be visitation Saturday in the Gathering Space at the church from 9:00 until 10:00 am.
Ed died peacefully Saturday, June 30, 2012, at Sunrise Senior Living, in Gilbert, Arizona.
Edward C. McDonnell was born icon August 8, 1925 in Calamus, Iowa, a son of Leroy and Mary (Gribbon) McDonnell. He was united in marriage to Loretta L. Drew on October 22, 1960 at Sacred Heart Church, Fillmore, Iowa. She preceded him in death on April 25, 1989. He then married Dorothy E. Taylor on May 19, 1990 at St. Paul the Apostle.
Mr. McDonnell was proud to have served our country; he was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the U.S. Air Force.
Ed retired in 1987 as an Electrical Inspector for the City of Davenport.
In addition to the church, he was also a member of the, Blue Army, Davenport V.F.W., Elks, Moose, and the Knights of Columbus, 532.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, Gilbert, Arizona; step-daughters, Kathryn Ann Datan, and Susan Joyce (Mike) Embree; Sindy McDonnell, sister-in-law, as well as many special nieces and nephews and their families; 7 step-grandchildren and 10 step-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, William P. McDonnell, and Paul R. McDonnell, and a sister, Mary Therese Tague.

Sharon Olsen

May 30, 2012
Davenport, Iowa
Funeral Services and a Mass of Christian Burial for Sharon L. Vargas Olsen, 53, a resident of Davenport, will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 4th, 2012 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Davenport. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport, with a prayer service at 3:00 p.m. Sharon died unexpectedly, Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.
Sharon Lucille Vargas was born icon December 13, 1958 in Davenport a daughter of Henry and Lucy (Juarez) Vargas. She was a Davenport Central graduate and went on to receive her B.A. degree in Elementary Education from the former Marycrest College in 1988. Sharon had taught in the Davenport Community School District for many years. Sharon enjoyed spending time with her family but her greatest joy in life was her grandchildren. She was a devoted and loving mom, grandma, daughter and sister.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to her family.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children; Jacob, Alexis and Karla all of Davenport; six precious grandchildren; her parents, Henry and Lucy Vargas, Davenport; her sisters, Gennie (Mike) Appleby, Pennsylvania, Rita (Ken) Vargas, Davenport, Vivian (Tom) Ready, Dubuque, Lydia Vargas-Craig, Davenport; her brothers, Lupe (Kit) Vargas, Davenport, Alex (Yolanda) Vargas, Los Angeles, CA, Ben Vargas, Davenport and Edward Vargas, Davenport; as well as numerous other loving extended family.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents.

Opal R. Sparrow

April 19, 1916 - May 26, 2012

Escondido, California
Opal R. Sparrow, 96, a resident of Escondido, California and a former longtime resident of Davenport died Saturday, May 26, 2012 in Escondido.
The family will greet friends at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, 614 Main Street, downtown Davenport, on Monday, June 4, 2012 from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., when the service to celebrate Opal's life will begin. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery, Davenport.
Opal Ruth Smith was born icon April 19, 1916, in Lineville, Iowa, a daughter of Frank and Sarah Ellen (Locke) Smith. She was united in marriage to Riley J. Sparrow, on December 27, 1958. He preceded her in death on November 16, 1998.
In earlier years, Opal had managed the Photo Studio at the former Petersen's Harned Von Maur Department Store. She and Riley moved to Mesa, Arizona in 1994, and she then moved to Escondido in 2000. Opal was a former member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Davenport, and was an avid reader. She enjoyed playing Bingo and other games.
Memorials can be made to the charity of your choice.
Survivors include her daughters and a son-in-law, Barbara and Kenneth Miller, Oceanside, CA; and Marlene Cahow, Columbia, Missouri; seven grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Riley, and sisters, Bessie "Bekky" Walker, Hazel Hutchison and Erma Venn. May they rest in peace.

Nancy Skalla

May 31, 2012

Davenport, Iowa
Funeral services and a Mass of Christian Burial for Nancy A. Skalla, 75, a resident of Davenport will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 4, 2012 at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church. Her family will greet friends at church in the gathering space prior to mass from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Nancy passed away Thursday, May 31, 2012 at her home. Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral home, Davenport assisted her family with arrangements.
Nancy Ann Skalla was born icon July 18, 1936 in Davenport a daughter of John and Mary (Cassidy) Skalla. She earned her nursing degree from Holy Cross Central in South Bend, Indiana and worked many years at the former St. Luke's Hospital in Davenport, Iowa, retiring in 1977 as surgery supervisor. She was a devoted parishioner at St. Paul's all of her life, belonging to many organizations within the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church.
She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Mike Downen, East Moline; her nieces and nephews, Scott Downen, Carbondale, IL, Matt Downen, East Moline, Sue (Ron) Borowczyk, Niantic, IL, Kathleen (Duane) Fleming, Moline, and Terry (Christine) Skalla, East Peoria, IL; a sister-in-law Carole Skalla, Arlington, WA; as well as numerous loving friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers: John Patrick Skalla, A. James Skalla and Robert Skalla and a sister-in-law Mary Calkins Skalla. May they rest in peace.

Eleanor L. Bane-Wildasin

July 20, 1932 - May 6, 2012

Davenport, Iowa
Funeral Services for Eleanor L. Bane-Wildasin, 79, a resident of Davenport will be 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 10, 2012, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, 4105 N. Division St. Davenport. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 9, at the Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home, 614 Main St. Davenport. A prayer service will be offered on Wednesday at the funeral Home at 4:00 p.m. to begin visitation. Addition visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until service on Thursday at the church.
Eleanor died Sunday May 6, 2012 at her home after a brief illness.
Eleanor Lois Bane was born icon July 20, 1932 in Davenport, the daughter of Richard C. and Elsie L. (Beyer) Bane.
She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from St. Ambrose (College) University.
She was employed at the former Lutheran Hospital, Moline, IL. and Mercy Hospital (Genesis East) for over 12 years having spent the last 7 years in the Pediatric Department. Eleanor retired in 1982.
Eleanor was united in marriage to Gary R. Wildasin October 10, 1984 at Our Lady of Victory Church. She enjoyed china painting, calligraphy, needlework, reading and gardening especially flowers. She was a 37 year charter member of Our Lady of Victory, sang in the church choir, member of AARP and Plus Sixty.
Memorials may be made to Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church.
Survivors include her husband, Gary; a sisters, Sylvia Heaton, Davenport,
Kathy Miller (Jack), Sun City West, AZ, and 15 nieces and nephews.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Marilyn.

Robert Balzer

April 16, 2012

Bettendorf, Iowa
Funeral services to Celebrate the Life of Robert H. "Bob" Balzer, 67, a resident of Bettendorf will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 21, 2012 in the All Faith Chapel at the Halligan – McCabe – DeVries Funeral Home, 614 Main Street, downtown Davenport. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. The family will greet friends Friday from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Bob died Monday, April 16, 2012 at his residence in Bettendorf. He was surrounded by loved ones and passed away following a courageous battle with pulmonary disease.
Robert Harold Balzer was born icon September 10, 1944 in Davenport, Iowa a son of Harold Vernon and Sally (Salter) Balzer.
Bob was a true renaissance man; possessing a wealth of knowledge, on many subjects. He was an amateur history buff and had a great appreciation for Davenport history as well as world history.
He was a business entrepreneur and began a career collecting antiques and other collectables. He eventually established Stubbs Eddy Antique and Estate Jewelry, in the Village of East Davenport. He had also established a Flea Market business, which operated at the Mississippi Valley Fair Grounds. Bob was well renowned in estate and fine jewelry business. He was an expert in his field and was always helpful with his vast knowledge. Eventually Bob's entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish, Grumpy's Saloon in the Village of East Davenport. The name arising from Bob's sometimes, misunderstood personality! He enjoyed the camaraderie in the Saloon business much like the Antique/Jewelry business, sharing stories and time with friends visiting about all subjects. The Saloon also catered to the wide variety of friends that Bob met throughout his life. He completed his life journey doing what he enjoyed early in life when he helped with the management of former Draft House on the river.
He enjoyed the outdoors, in earlier years he had been an avid hunter; he especially enjoyed fishing and always looked forward to his annual trips to Canada.
Bob cherished his childhood and adult memories of his two grandmothers', Tillie and Emma. He loved the Sunday morning cinnamon roll breakfast gatherings.
Memorials may be made to the Village of East Davenport Preservation Society.
Those left to honor his memory include his brother and sister-in-law, John and Melanie Balzer, Bolingbrook, Illinois; nieces, Gretchen (Michael) Moylan, and Erica (Chris) Higgins; a great niece, Caroline, and his extended family, cousins the Salter family.
"Turn down that music"
He was preceded in death by his parents and beloved grandparents.
