Funeral services and Mass of Christian Burial for Margaret M. Sunderbruch, 96, a resident of Bettendorf will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 14, 2012 at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 4097 – 18th Street, Bettendorf. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport. The family will greet friends from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Friday at the Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home, 614 Main Street, downtown Davenport with a 4:00 prayer service to begin visitation. There will be an additional visitation on Saturday from 8:30 to 9:30 at the church. Mrs. Sunderbruch passed away Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf.
Margaret Mary Murphy was born icon September 8, 1915 in Dubuque, Iowa the daughter of George R. and Theresa M. (Hasenstab) Murphy. She was united in marriage to Arthur T. Sunderbruch on September 22, 1941 in Dubuque, Iowa. He preceded her in death September 24, 1980.
Margaret received her Registered Nursing degree from St. Joseph School of Nursing in Dubuque. She worked as a private duty nurse and at Mercy Hospital, Davenport in later years, she worked with her husband in their business Sunderbruch Insurance Agency.
Mrs. Sunderbruch was a member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church, Catholic Women's League, Serra Club and the Redemptorist Seminary family. She began volunteering at the young age of 10 and had been very active in the church throughout the years and was a past president of AHS Parents Club.
Memorials may be made to St. John Vianney Catholic Church or Birthright.
She is survived by her children and spouses; Mary Ann (John) Kennedy, Ottawa, IL, Dr. Robert (Kathy) Sunderbruch, Muscatine, IA, Joan Wysoske, Bettendorf, Jane (Dave) Wilson, Utica, IL and Joseph (Bobbi) Sunderbruch, Bettendorf; a daughter-in-law Gala Sunderbruch, Bettendorf; 11 loving grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Anne (Edwin) Frankfurt and Rita Finley, all of Pittsburg, PA; 2 sisters-in-law, Rosemary Murphy, Pittsburg, PA and Beverly Murphy, Desert, CA.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son Arthur "Chip" Sunderbruch in 2006, a sister Veronica McLaughlin, and 3 brothers John Murphy, Edward Murphy and George Murphy.

George Whisenhunt, 82, of Belle Plaine, Iowa, died, Saturday, January 5, 2002, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City, from complications of a cerebral hemorrhage. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 11, 2002, at the Glenwood Freewill Baptist Church in Glenwood, Arkansas. Burial will be at Thompson Chapel in Amity, Arkansas. Friends may greet the family from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the Davis & Smith Funeral Home in Glenwood, Arkansas. George Whisenhunt was born icon February 15, 1919, in Amity, Arkansas, the son of Pierce G. and Mary (Lawery) Whisenhunt. He grew up in Glenwood and at an early age worked in the mines and for the railroad. In his late teens and early twenties he relocated to Oregon before being called to serve in the United States Army during WWII. Following the war he returned to Oregon where he worked in the timber industry and did construction. He was united in marriage to Betty J. Warren on May 10, 1951. The couple made their home in Redding, California for many years. They moved to Belle Plaine, Iowa, in 1994. George was very fond of the ranch and particularly enjoyed raising cattle and the hay to feed them. He is survived by his wife, Betty of Belle Plaine, Iowa, three sons; George Whisenhunt Jr., of Louisville, Colorado, Keith Whisenhunt of Stayton, Oregon, Dan Whisenhunt of Turlock, California, five grandchildren, Kalene, Bryan, Cullen, Brent and Mallory, two sisters, Ethel Brown of Denver, Colorado, Effie Norris of Glenwood, Arkansas, his brother, Herrel Whisenhunt of Atoka, Oklahoma. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Essie and Tiny and two brothers, Erv and Paul.

Mae B. White

November 24, 1926 - April 6, 2012

Bettendorf, Iowa
Funeral services and a Mass of Christian Burial for Mae B. White, 85, a resident of Bettendorf will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 4097 – 18th Street, Bettendorf, Iowa. Inurnment will take place at a later date in Resurrection Cemetery, Mendota, Minnesota. Visitation is Tuesday from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home, 614 Main Street, downtown Davenport. There will be additional visitation at church Wednesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Mae passed away Friday, April 6, 2012 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf following a brief illness.
Mae B. White was born icon November 24, 1926 in Minneapolis, Minnesota the daughter of Rollin and Katherine (Leahy) White. She was 1945 graduate of Southwest High School, Minneapolis. Mae worked for Ramco in Davenport from 1952 until her retirement in 1996. In earlier years, she had been employed at Stanly Ironworks in Minneapolis and Eastern Airlines in Miami.
Mae was a member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church, Bettendorf. She was a faithful volunteer for the John Deere Classic, the Davenport Horticultural Society at VanderVeer Park, and the Bettendorf Food Pantry.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. John Vianney Catholic church.
Those left to cherish her memory, include her lifelong dear friend of 60 years Joyce Olson, nephews Jim (Therese Blabac) Ryder and Patrick White; nieces Judy Ryder, Janet (Scott) Laden and Renee (Rob) Giesen; great nephew Derek Laden; great nieces Kacie (Chris) Ervasti, Lindsay Laden and Lauren Giesen; great-great nephew Miles Ervasti; great-great niece Maya Ervasti.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Betty Ryder, Ellen Griebling and Joan White and her brother Rollin White, Jr. May they rest in peace.
A special thanks to Sandy, Marcy, and the rest of the fabulous staff at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House for their compassionate care of Mae and her family.

Robert Balzer

April 16, 2012

Bettendorf, Iowa
Funeral services to Celebrate the Life of Robert H. "Bob" Balzer, 67, a resident of Bettendorf will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 21, 2012 in the All Faith Chapel at the Halligan – McCabe – DeVries Funeral Home, 614 Main Street, downtown Davenport. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. The family will greet friends Friday from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Bob died Monday, April 16, 2012 at his residence in Bettendorf. He was surrounded by loved ones and passed away following a courageous battle with pulmonary disease.
Robert Harold Balzer was born icon September 10, 1944 in Davenport, Iowa a son of Harold Vernon and Sally (Salter) Balzer.
Bob was a true renaissance man; possessing a wealth of knowledge, on many subjects. He was an amateur history buff and had a great appreciation for Davenport history as well as world history.
He was a business entrepreneur and began a career collecting antiques and other collectables. He eventually established Stubbs Eddy Antique and Estate Jewelry, in the Village of East Davenport. He had also established a Flea Market business, which operated at the Mississippi Valley Fair Grounds. Bob was well renowned in estate and fine jewelry business. He was an expert in his field and was always helpful with his vast knowledge. Eventually Bob's entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish, Grumpy's Saloon in the Village of East Davenport. The name arising from Bob's sometimes, misunderstood personality! He enjoyed the camaraderie in the Saloon business much like the Antique/Jewelry business, sharing stories and time with friends visiting about all subjects. The Saloon also catered to the wide variety of friends that Bob met throughout his life. He completed his life journey doing what he enjoyed early in life when he helped with the management of former Draft House on the river.
He enjoyed the outdoors, in earlier years he had been an avid hunter; he especially enjoyed fishing and always looked forward to his annual trips to Canada.
Bob cherished his childhood and adult memories of his two grandmothers', Tillie and Emma. He loved the Sunday morning cinnamon roll breakfast gatherings.
Memorials may be made to the Village of East Davenport Preservation Society.
Those left to honor his memory include his brother and sister-in-law, John and Melanie Balzer, Bolingbrook, Illinois; nieces, Gretchen (Michael) Moylan, and Erica (Chris) Higgins; a great niece, Caroline, and his extended family, cousins the Salter family.

He was preceded in death by his parents and beloved grandparents.

William Hein

June 1, 2012

Davenport, Iowa
William P. "Bill" Hein, 85, of Davenport, passed away Friday, June 1, 2012 at the Kahl Home, Davenport. Graveside services with military honors provided by Davenport American Legion Post #26 will be at Noon Tuesday, June 5 at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport. Per his request there will be no visitation and the rite of cremation performed. Memorials may be made to the William P. Hein Memorial Fund.
William Phillip Hein was born icon November 21, 1926 in Davenport, a son of Mickel Joseph and Mabel Vernita (Strong) Hein. We was united in marriage to Mary Lou Fiedler on December 29, 1951 in Davenport and celebrated 50 years together prior to her passing in 2002.
Bill was a family man first and foremost. He loved his family with a passion and was there for everything, spending countless hours playing with his daughters, grandchildren and the other neighborhood kids whether it was out in the yard, coaching them in softball or on the side of a trout stream. He was a perfectionist, selfless, and "Mr. Fix-it." He was the type of person who never met a stranger and had a natural way of putting people at ease. This made it easier to play practical jokes as many victims can attest.
He learned the value of hard work at an early age, starting at Oscar Mayer at the age of 11 working after school. After two enlistments in the Navy and one in the Army and two wars (World War II and Korea) he was a welder with IH and later became a painter/ painting contractor and worked for Quality Painters for 30 years. Following his retirement he worked for Mid-American Energy as a security guard.
He was a member of the Painters Union, American Legion, and the USS LST 811 Reunion Group. He and Mary Lou enjoyed attending many reunions with his shipmates.
Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Donnie Moses, Blue Grass, IA, Joanne and Steve Herron, Rock Island, Anita and Kirk McKnight, Milan, IL, and Jacque and Rick Schwanz, Davenport; 12 grandchildren, Chris, Kevin, Josh, Jerry, Allison, Mike, Kellie, Sean, Brooke, Thomas, and Skyler; great grandchildren Jordan, Mason, and Maddox; and a brother Paul Hein, Bettendorf.
In addition to his wife Mary Lou, sons Daniel J. and Stephan C. Hein (both in infancy), grandson Thomas Moses, sisters Vivian Holst and Elaine Kane, and brother John Hein preceded him in death.

Joan DeVries

April 11, 2012

Davenport, Iowa
Funeral Services and a Mass of Christian Burial for Joan T. DeVries, 75, a resident of Davenport, will be 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 16, 2012 at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, 4105 N. Division Street, Davenport. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Davenport. The family will greet friends on Sunday, April 15, 2012 from 1:00 until 4:00 p.m. at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, 614 Main Street, downtown Davenport. There will be a prayer service at 3:30 p.m. that all are invited to attend. There will be additional visitation at the church from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. on Monday.
Joan passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at her home following an extended illness.
Joan Taggart was born icon on April 29, 1936 in Sioux City, Iowa, a daughter of Thomas L. and Gertrude A. (Brennan) Taggart. She was a 1958 graduate of Briar Cliff College, Sioux City, IA, where she earned a B.S. in Biology. She completed her Master's degree in Counseling from the University of Iowa in 1980.
Joan was united in marriage to Kenneth Jay DeVries on December 26, 1957 at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral, Sioux City, IA.
Joan was a tireless advocate of Catholic education. She began a career in teaching at Holy Family Catholic Grade School then to Assumption High School, where she retired in 1992 after 26 years. Joan served in many capacities at AHS including: science teacher, counselor, and assistant athletic director. She was awarded the Golden Apple Award for excellence in teaching.
She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She cherished spending time with her family.
Memorials may be made to Embracing Our Future, a campaign led by the Assumption Foundation for Scott County K-12 Catholic Schools.
Surviving Joan are her husband, Ken, their children and their spouses, Jean DeVries Haack, Davenport, Nancy and Stan Framburg, Naperville, IL, Laura and Mark Reyhons, Lisa and Mike O'Donnell and Dan and Stacie DeVries, all of Davenport; 18 grandchildren, Jessica (Mike) Perry, Alexa (Aric) Robinson, Colin Framburg, Grant Framburg, Annie Framburg, Bridget (Jake) Steele, Alise (Nick) Haut, Megan (Jon) Garvin, Kate Reyhons, Thomas Reyhons, Danny O'Donnell, Tim O'Donnell, John O'Donnell, Mary Kate O'Donnell, Samuel DeVries, Patrick DeVries, Jonathan DeVries and Isabel Joan DeVries; 3 great-grandchildren, Westin Perry, Brennan Haut and Quinn Steele; a brother, Terry (Madelyn) Taggart, Vermillion, SD; step-sister, Mary Anderson, Seattle, WA; and a sister-in-law, Shirley Taggart, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister and brother-in-law, Jane and Frank Sailors and a brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Ady Taggart. May they rest in peace.

John E. Davis

October 15, 1927 - April 6, 2012

Davenport, Iowa
Funeral services and a Mass of Christian Burial for John E. Davis, 84, a resident of Davenport will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, 4105 N. Division Street, Davenport. Burial will be in the National Cemetery Rock Island Arsenal. Visitation will be Monday, April 9, 2012 from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the Halligan – McCabe – DeVries Funeral Home, 614 Main Street, downtown Davenport. A prayer service will be offered at 6:30 p.m. that all are encouraged to attend. There will be additional visitation at the church on Tuesday, beginning at 9:00 a.m. in the Gathering Space.
John died peacefully on Good Friday, April 6, 2012, at Genesis Medical Center, West Central Park, Davenport. He was surrounded by his loving family at the time of his passing.
John Emerson Davis was born icon October 15, 1927 in Courtland, N.Y. a son of Charles Roy and Marie (Schaper) Davis.
He was proud to have served our country as a Seaman 2nd class with the United States Navy.
John was united in marriage to Marilyn Joan Kalmer on August 18, 1951, in Ft. Madison, Iowa. Together they have been blessed with over sixty-years of marriage.
He is a retired Federal Employee, serving as a U.S. Postal Carrier for 26 years, retiring in 1984.
John was a member of Our Lady of Victory Church and the National Association of Letter Carriers. John believed in giving back and volunteered with numerous organizations over the years, most notably serving as coordinator for Meals on Wheels.
He was a die-hard Cubs fan, and would rarely miss the opportunity to watch them play. He and Marilyn also enjoyed traveling, and had many memorable trips.
Memorials may be made to the Our Lady of Victory Building Fund, Marquette Academy or to Meals on Wheels Program.
Those left to cherish his memory include his beloved wife, Marilyn; and children and their spouses, Rich and Janie Davis, Carterville, Illinois, Larry Davis, Davenport, and Diane and Jim Webb, Jr. East Moline, Illinois, a daughter-in-law, Betty Davis, Davenport; and seven loving grandchildren, John (Liz) Davis, Rebeccah, Chad, Megan (Zach) Whitecotton, Grant, Brooke and Thomas Davis
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a son, Chuck.
