Wentzien, Herbert Troy

Cemetery: Oakland Cemetery

Herbert Troy Wentzien, 46 of Solon lost his battle with cancer on February 13, 2010. Funeral services will be Wednesday February 17th at 1:00 p.m. at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Solon under the auspices of Solon United Methodist Church with Rev. Scott Meador presiding. Private family inurnment will be in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be prior to the service from 11am-1pm at the church. Brosh Chapel in Solon is in charge of arrangements.

Troy was born icon on December 17, 1963 to Herbert Theodore and Jo Ann Tracy Wentzien. He grew up in Lincoln and graduated from Gladbrook High School. He attended the University of Iowa and was a member of the Hawkeye Marching Band. He later transferred to UNI where he earned a BA in Business with a minor in Computer Science. He married Kristine Sade on July 26, 1986. They moved to Solon in 1990 and had 4 children. He worked for the Iowa City Community Schools for 17 years as a Network Engineer. Troy was a devoted father, husband, Boy Scout, community member and faithful friend. Troy has given to the youth of the community through coaching as well as the Boy Scouts.

Troy is survived by his wife, Kris; sons H. Tucker, H. Tanner, H. Turner and daughter, Tarrah all of Solon; his mother, Jo Ann Wentzien of Lincoln; mother in law Sarah Sade of Marshalltown and mother in law Robin Sade of Davenport; brothers, Trent (Deb) Wentzien of Lincoln, Scott (Mary) Sade of Buckeye Arizona, Philip Sade of Marion, Jim (Deborah) Sade of San Diego, California, sisters Tedra (Craig) Henze of Albion and Tracy (Dennis) Ostrem of Marshalltown; Amanda Sade of Davenport; and 14 nieces and nephews.

Troy was preceded in death by his grandparents, his father Herbert Ted Wentzien, father in law Dick Sade and 2 nieces.

Memorials may be directed in Troy’s name and can be sent to Solon State Bank, PO Box 129, Solon, Iowa 52333.

Tenborg, Donna Lee

Cemetery: Oakland Cemetery

Donna Lee Tenborg, 83, died Saturday, February 13, 2010 peacefully in her home surrounded by her loving family. Private family memorial services will be at a later date in Oakland Cemetery in Solon. Brosh Chapel in Solon is in charge of arrangements.

Donna was born icon September 19, 1926 in Graettinger, the daughter of M.F. “Ted” and Gladys V. (Breffle) Gilbaugh. She married Roy E. Tenborg on April 14, 1942 in Fairmont, Minnesota. Donna worked at Rexall Drug and then as a chairside dental assistant for Dr. C.A. Shiley in Graettinger. Donna moved with her family to North Liberty in the fall of 1963 and then settled in the Solon area in 1967. Donna worked at NCS / Pearson and retired after 25 years in the accounting department. Donna enjoyed her yard and flowers. She liked playing cards with friends and enjoyed doing jigsaw and crossword puzzles. Among the things she enjoyed were times spent with her sister in law Milli. She enjoyed watching television, playing with “Captain the Dog”, and spending time with her family, especially her two grand daughters Kari and Kasi.

Donna is survived by her son Gary Lee Tenborg of Tumwater, Washington; daughters Gayle M. Tenborg of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Anne E. (William) Taylor of Albert Lea, Minnesota; grandchildren Kari Jean Tenborg of Solon and Kasi Ann Tenborg of North Liberty; a brother Dale Gilbaugh of Earlham; a daughter in law Pat (Owen) Rehnblom of North Liberty and a sister in law Milli Gilbaugh of Iowa City, as well as nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death was her husband Roy, a son Mark Tenborg, a brother Paul B. Gilbaugh, and her parents.

Memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice.

Bevans, Tom "Kirby"

Cemetery: Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery

Tom “Kirby” Bevans, 53, died Thursday, February 11, at his home. As per Tom’s wishes a private service was held on Friday, February 12, and a memorial service will be held in Cedar Rapids as well as service in August at Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery. Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids is in charge of arrangements.

Tom was born icon December 27, 1956 in Minneapolis, the son of Kirby and Joan Osgerby Bevans. He was a graduate of Waterloo East High School in 1975. Kirby was an over the road truck driver. He was employed by Bushman Excavating in Cedar Rapids.

Tom is survived by a son, John, of Seoul, South Korea; three sisters: Kathy (Dan) Cantonwine of Vinton, Coleen (Mark) Driscoll of Cedar Falls, Eileen (Scott) Melohn of Clarksville; nieces Tara (Zach), Shawna, Samantha and Melissa, nephews Michael (Jessica), Stephen, David, Joshua, and Justin; great nieces Alyssa and Emily; and a great nephew, Tracker; as well as his close friends including Steve Droste and Jon Petersen.

Tom is preceded in death by his parents.

Memorials may be directed to the family at 2925 61st Street Lane, Vinton, Iowa 52349.

Kessler, Eugene Francis

Cemetery: St. Bridget's Cemetery - Nolan Settlement

Eugene Francis Kessler, 78 of Cedar Rapids and formerly of Solon, died Tuesday, February 9 in his home. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Marys Catholic Church in Solon. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, at St. Marys Catholic Church. Burial St. Bridgets - Nolan Settlement following the Mass. Brosh Chapel in Solon is in charge of arrangements.

Gene was born icon February 25, 1931 on a farm near Solon, the son of John and Cecilia Moravek Kessler. He married Donna Kasner and to this union a daughter Judy and a son Gene were born. He farmed in Solon area for many years as well as operated the Legion Lanes in Cedar Rapids. Gene enjoyed to bowl, fix machinery, share his homegrown produce with friends and loved to help people in any need. Gene was active in the development and maintenance of Summit View Homes. He was known for his catchy smile and little laugh.

He is survived by a daughter Judy Mulvihille of Florida, and Gene (Cindy) Kessler of Denver; four grandchildren; a brother Clarence (Cecilia) Kessler of Cedar Rapids; two sisters Dorothy Linnell and Darlene Klouda of Solon; as well as his special little girls Brittani and Cassie Ruhd and their parents Jeff and Karen Ruhd as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother and sister in law Melvin Dorie Kessler, a nephew Gary Kessler, and two brother in laws Charles Linnell and Don Klouda, and also a son in law Jim Mulvihille, and a special companion Marian Ruhd.

Grimm, Sharon Marie

Cemetery: Oakland Cemetery

Sharon Marie Bonnett Grimm (1945-2010) died after a yearlong battle against endometrial cancer. Sharon is the mother of three children: Shawna (Grimm) Hansen of Revere, Massachusetts, Dion Grimm of Solon and Daniel Grimm of Solon. Sharon was married to her high school sweetheart, Lewis Grimm, for 23 years. Sharon is the daughter of Ronald Bonnett, who served as Mayor of Newton in the early 1960s and died of Lou Gehrig’s disease in 1968, and Bonnie (Tedrow) Bonnett, who raised 7 children and passed away in 2006. Sharon is the sister of David Bonnett, who passed away from lung cancer in 2006, Janet Bonnett, who died at a young age, Sandy Bonnett, who died at childbirth, Mary Ann Bonnett of Ruthven, Randall Bonnett of Gladbrook and Gary Bonnett of Indianola and an aunt and great-aunt to their children and grandchildren. Sharon graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Science in Sociology. She worked for Rockwell Collins, Bishop’s, St. Luke’s Hospital, operated her private cleaning company and in her last position, worked as a school bus driver for the Iowa City Public Schools.

Services will be 10 a.m., Saturday, February 13, 2010 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling Street SW. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery in Solon. Visitation will be an hour prior to services at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids. Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids is in charge of arrangements.

Barkhoff, Don E.

Cemetery: Garden of Memories Cemetery - Waterloo

Don Barkhoff, 65, died Saturday, February 6 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, February 11 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling Street SW, with Rev. Renee Lunemann presiding. Private family inurnment will be held in Garden of Memories Cemetery in Waterloo at a later date. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids. Visitation will also be one hour prior to services Thursday at the chapel.

Don was born icon December 1, 1944 in Cedar Falls the son of Benny and Dorothy Straight Barkhoff. He served in the U.S. Navy for over four years and was involved in electrical maintenance on radar. Don installed carpet and flooring for Randy’s Interiors in Coralville for many years. Don enjoyed classic cars including going to car shows.

Don is survived by his wife Linda of Solon; a brother Steve (Keevin) Barkhoff of Delhi; children Dan (Darla) Barkhoff of Grundy Center, Sandy (Mike) Schebler of Solon, Britt (Kevin) Tompkins of Solon, Nicki Munger of Charlotte, North Carolina, Chad (Kristie) Munger of Houston, Texas, Kyle (Kassi) Bantz of Cedar Rapids as well as ten grandchildren and a great grandson.

Don is preceded in death by his parents and a sister Carole Petra.

Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society in his name.

Volesky, John Charles

Cemetery: Czech National Cemetery

John Charles Volesky, 87 of Cedar Rapids, died at his beloved farm home from Parkinsons on February 4, 2010. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling Street SW. Burial will follow at Czech National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids.

John is survived by his wife Adeline of over 64 years, three children Carol (Larry) Junis of Rock Island, Illinois, Nadine Anderson of North Liberty, and Dennis (Debbie) Volesky of Swisher; five grandchildren Scott (Lindsey) Baumgartner, Todd Baumgartner, Kimberly, Lisa and Craig Volesky as well as three great grandchildren Kaiya, Shannon and Alliauna Baumgartner; a sister Evelyn Thuerauf of Joplin, Missouri, and Eleanor (Dale) Hegland of Cedar Rapids; sister in law Blanche Volesky of Cedar Rapids and Marge Volesky of Newhall as well as many nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents, William and Molly Kroul Volesky, brothers Lawrence and Marvin Volesky and a son in law Lon Anderson.

John was born icon February 4, 1923 on a farm which is now part of Seminole Park in Linn Junction. He married Adeline Jansa on June 5, 1945 at the First Bohemian and Moravian Church rural Ely. John spent his life on the farm. He enjoyed farming and took good care of his animals, machinery and in soil conservation. His early hobby was taking flying lessons at Hunter Airport. He later enjoyed traveling with his family touring all 50 states and Europe and Canada. His enjoyment in retirement was attending Czech music, concerts and festivals. He was a member of Asbury Methodist Church, Pautz Senior Group, National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library, Czech Heritage Foundation, where he pulled a float with his John Deere tractor in parades in Czech Village and surrounding towns during their celebrations. He belonged to Linn County Farm Bureau and served many years on the Public Relations and Building Committee. John was a devoted and loving husband, dad and deda, and will be missed by all who knew him.
