Finneman, Richard Matthew

Cemetery: Cedar Memorial

Richard Matthew Finneman, 74 of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, June 7, 2006 at home. Services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday June 12, 2006 at Harvest Time Fellowship Church, 4890 Gordon Avenue NW, with Rev. C.W. Slaton presiding. Burial will follow in Cedar Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, June 10, 2006 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids and for an hour prior to services Monday at the Church.

Richard was born icon May 31, 1932 in Minneapolis, Minnesota the son of Edward and Angeline Loesch Finneman. He married Joann R. Anderson July 24, 1954 in Ottumwa. Richard worked for 30 years in the warehouse for Smulekoff Furniture. He was an active member of Harvest Time Fellowship Church. He loved spending with his family and friends, including the people he would meet at the Johnson Avenue Hy-Vee.

Richard is survived by a daughter Karen (Ken) Casey of Traer; two sons Rick Finneman of Anamosa and Kevin Finneman of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren, Daniel, Joshua, and Nathan Finneman, Michelle Vaverka, Scott Bowers, and Mindy Amey; six great-grandchildren; six sisters Esther, Mary Ann, Dorothy, Yvonne, Eileen, and Connie and a brother Ambrose. Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife Joann who died September 7, 1995; two sisters Fern and Patsy; and two brothers Bob and Jim.

Memorials may be directed to Harvest Time Fellowship Church.

Dvorak, Frank Joseph

Cemetery: Czech National Cemetery

Frank Joseph Dvorak, 89, of Cedar Rapids went home to be with the lord Sunday, June 11, 2006 at Manor Care following a long illness. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 14, 2006 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids. Burial will follow in Czech National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 13, 2006 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids and for an hour prior to services Wednesday at the chapel.

Frank was born icon April 8, 1917 in Mt. Vernon the son of Frank and Emma (Tums) Dvorak. Frank farmed in Mt. Vernon for many years, among other careers, and his most recent was drywall prior to his retirement. Frank loved his large garden, cooking, making kolaches, mushroom hunting, picking hickory nuts, and playing his accordion. He had a great sense of humor and loved playing jokes on people. His greatest joy was being surrounded by his family.

Frank is survived by two sons Robert (Beula) Dvorak of Mt. Vernon and Kenny (Ruby) Dvorak of Cedar Rapids; six daughters Evelyn Vogel of Cedar Rapids, Mary (Jim) Henderson of Marion, Helen (Mike) Ramsey of Williamsburg, Joan (Dale) Andrews of Rowley, Janie (Jim) Clinton of Tama, and Debbie Meyer of Cedar Rapids; twenty-four grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; and one great great grandchild. Preceding him in death were his parents, and his two sisters Anna Dosedlo and Lenora Hartl.

The family would like to give a special thank you to the Manor Care Staff and Amenity Hospice. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Frank’s memory.

Nezerka, Lottie Bessie

Cemetery: Czech National Cemetery

Lottie Bessie Nezerka, 91 of Cedar Rapids died Sunday, June 11 at Mercy Medical Center. At her request private family services will be held Wednesday, June 14 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids. Burial will follow in Czech National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids.

Lottie was born icon November 15, 1914 in rural Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Frank and Josephine Klinger Dostal. She married Adolph Nezerka Jr. June 2, 1936 near Ely. They farmed near Ely for many years. She loved to work in the garden, attending to her plants and flowers. She was especially fond of roses. In 1992, she received the annual award from the Board of Realtors for her gardening.

Lottie is survived by her sons Adolph (Carlene) Nezerka of Ely, Ron (Marilyn) Nezerka of Cedar Rapids, Lumir (Marlys) Nezerka of Minneapolis, and Dean (Betty) Nezerka of Ely; seven grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband Adolph who died November 16, 1962; two brothers Lumir and Lester Dostal; a sister Irene Herman, and a granddaughter Rhonda Nezerka.

Memorials may be given to the donors choice.

Haddad, James Abraham

Cemetery: St. George

James Abraham Haddad, 84, of 208 35th Street Dr SE, Cedar Rapids passed away peacefully on June 17, 2006 at St. Lukes Hospital. Services: 10:00 am. Monday, June 19 at St. George Orthodox Church, 3560 Cottage Grove Avenue SE. The Fr. Elias Khouri will officiate. Burial will follow at St. George Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Friends may call on Sunday June 18 from 4 to 7 pm at St. George Orthodox Church, a Trisagion Prayer Service will follow at 7:00 pm. Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids is in charge of arrangements.

Jim is survived by his wife, Betty (Ruffin) of 51 wonderful years. He is also survived by his son, James Jr., daughter in law, Jo Ellen, and grandchildren, Anthony and Nicole (his two special loves in his life), a sister, Martha Haddad of Worcester Massachusetts, and brother/sister in laws, Fr. Tom Ruffin of Detroit, Sally Ruffin of Detroit, Velma Sleem of Oklahoma City.

Even though his immediate family was small, his extended family was large as Jim and Betty had 14 sisters/brothers between them, along with many nieces and nephews. They considered their Uncle Jim like a second father and he treated them as his own kids.

Jim was born icon and raised in Worcester, Massachusetts where he met Betty when she visited her brother who was the church priest. They were married in Oklahoma City in 1955 and lived in Worcester Massachusetts. Shortly thereafter they moved back to Cedar Rapids to care for Betty’s parents. Jim worked for Northwestern Bell until he retired in 1983. Jim was a simple, quiet man who put his faith and family above all else. He lived his life with Christ and made sure his family followed his lead. He worked tirelessly for St. George Church in many capacities. His favorite function was being the superintendent of the church school for many years.

Jim’s hobbies included cards, backgammon, and above all else, the Hawkeyes. He rarely missed a home football game until age 80, and was always in charge of the tail gate, as it was his favorite part of the day. The last game he saw in person was in Minneapolis 2002 with his son and grandson, when Iowa won the championship!

The family would like to thank Garnett Place, even though he was a resident for a short period, he enjoyed his new home. We also want to thank the staff at St. Lukes Hospital, especially the Intensive Care Unit, for the special care given Jim during his stays.

To recognize his love for the children of St. George, family requests that all contributions be directed toward the St. George Scholarship Fund.

Grinder, Eileen H.

Cemetery: Cedar Memorial Cemetery

Eileen H. Grinder, 69 of 234 Camden Road, died Friday, June 23 from injuries suffered in a motor vehicle accident. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 28 at Brosh Chapel in Solon. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, and for an hour prior to services Wednesday at Brosh Chapel. As per Eileen’s wishes she will be cremated following services. A private family inurnment will be Friday, June 30 at Cedar Memorial Cemetery.

Eileen was born icon March 2, 1937 in Williamsburg, the daughter of Harold and Velma Collingwood Hofmaster. She worked for many years as a legal secretary for Dial Corporation and for over 25 years as a secretary for College Community Schools.

Eileen is survived by a son Kevin (Gaetana) Grinder of West Haven, Connecticut; a daughter Jennifer Grinder of Garland, Texas; two grandchildren Zoe and Patrick; her mother Velma Hofmaster of Cedar Rapids; two sisters Janice (Jim) McCrabb of West Liberty; a brother in law Ron Becicka of West Des Moines; and a brother Rick (Pat) Hofmaster of Sacramento, California. Preceding her in death was her father Harold. Her sister Sandra Becicka died June 24, 2006.

Eileen enjoyed life to its fullest. Among the things that she really enjoyed were following the Hawkeyes, traveling, Southwest living, Latino food, classical and celtic music, sewing needlepoint and stitching, spending time at the cabin, eating chocolate and looking and feeling young.

In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in her name. Memorials may be sent to the family at 234 Camden Road, Iowa City, Iowa 52245.

Yeries, Lawrence William

Cemetery: Anderson Cemetery

Lawrence William Yeries, 91 of Hills died Friday, June 30 at Atrium Village Care Center. Services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 5 at Brosh Chapel in Solon. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to service time on Wednesday at the Chapel. A private family inurnment will be on Thursday at Anderson Cemetery in Swisher.

Lawrence was born icon December 19, 1914 in Sugarbottom, Newport Township the son of Barney and Anna Koss Yeries. He married Lottie Margaret Stancel November 10, 1943 in Cedar Rapids. He loved to farm and spend time tending to his garden.

Lawrence is survived by his wife Lottie; a daughter Linda (Robert) Grimm of Irvine, California; a brother Leo Yeries of Cedar Rapids; a sister Dorothy Schroeder of Tipton; one grandchild Jason (Sandy) Grimm of Los Angeles, California and one great-grandchild Robbie Grimm; also special friends Brent, Sandi, Amanda, Cody and Emily Hudachek of Hills. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers William, Melvin, Frank, Harlan and Glenn; five sisters Rose, Nora, Francis, Edith and Ethel.

Memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice.

Nejdl, Mary B.

Cemetery: Czech National Cemetery

Mary B. Nejdl, 95 of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, June 30, 2006, at Colonial Manor in Amana. Services will 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 3, 2006 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids with Rev. William Harnish presiding. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to service time on Monday. Burial will follow in Czech National Cemetery.

Mary was born icon September 8, 1910 in Czesky Brob, Czechoslovakia the daughter of Albert and Mary Cech Jelinek. She married Jerry J. Nejdl on October 30, 1930.

Mary is survived by her son Leonard (Sheryl) Nejdl of Cedar Rapids; her grandchildren Lynne Marie (Paul) Nejdl-Erger, Douglas Scot (Brenda) Nejdl, Chuck (DeeAnn) Nejdl, and Phillip (Michelle) Nejdl; great-grandchildren Emily, Thomas and Brooke Nejdl, Mason and Mitchell Erger; a step-grandchild Scott Szopinski; a brother Leonard Jelinek of Cedar Rapids, and a daughter-in-law Marj Nejdl of Cedar Rapids. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband Jerry who died August 2, 1968, a son Edward Nejdl, a sister Rose Zvacek, and a brother Joe Jelinek.

Memorials may be directed to family. The memorials will be used for nursing equipment and supplies at Colonial Manor in Amana.
