Davenport, Lyle Eugene

Lyle Eugene Davenport, 66 of 2629 24th Avenue SE, died Saturday, July 1, 2006 at his home from a lengthy illness. Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 6 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be one hour prior to services Thursday at the chapel.

Lyle was born icon May 18, 1940 in Iowa City, the son of Glen Allen and Erma Irene Kuehl Davenport. He married Wilma Ann Wilson July 21, 1961 in Cedar Rapids. Lyle served in the U.S. Navy for 4 years. He worked for the City of Cedar Rapids for over 30 years in Parking Meter Department

Lyle is survived by his wife Wilma, his children, a son Jim (Kim) Davenport; a daughter Jean (Wayne) Hard and a son Glen (Carie) Davenport; grandchildren Bret, Ashley, Jason, Adam, Amy, Shayna, Kale, Kyle, Courtney, and Troy; a brother Robert Davenport all of Cedar Rapids. He is preceded in death by his parents.

Memorials may be directed to the family at 2629 24th Avenue SE, Cedar Rapids 52403.

Benesh, Alma Detert

Cemetery: Anderson Cemetery

Alma Detert Benesh, 90 of 116 Walford Road SW, Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, July 11, 2006 at the Solon Care Center after an extended illness. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 14 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids with Rev. Tom Carver presiding. Burial will follow in Anderson Cemetery in Swisher. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, and for an hour prior to services Friday at the Chapel.

Alma was born icon December 6, 1915 in Jefferson Township in Johnson County, the daughter of Theodore and Mary Stransky Detert. She attended school at Vorel No. 6. She married Milo Benesh, February 7, 1933. They farmed together until Milo’s death on July 18, 1995. She was a life long farm wife. She enjoyed gardening, baking kolaches, cooking, traveling, hosting family get togethers, helping on the farm and attending family sporting events. Alma has remained on the farm since they moved there in 1933.

Alma is survived by her son James (Esther) Benesh of Cedar Rapids; daughters Marilyn (Vernon) Ziskovsky of Swisher and Iona (Elmer) Vanorny of Solon; fourteen grandchildren Lynnette (Mark) Fevold, Dwane (Ann), Lyle (Deb), Norman, Alan (Katie) Ziskovsky, Dan Vanorny, and LaVina (Dave) Barcus, Darek (Kayoko) Benesh, Tanna (Reggie) Meade, Kristy (Darren) Cerveny, Wyndee (Pat) Breheny, Jodie (Jacob) Hargrafen, Andy and Rodney Benesh; eighteen great grandchildren; a sister Elizabeth Becicka of Cedar Rapids; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Alma was preceded into death by her parents; her husband, Milo; brothers Jormill, Lewis, Milo and Lumir; also a sister Tillie Kadera.

Memorials may be directed to the family or to a charity of the donors choice.

Voparil, Richard Franklin

Cemetery: St. Bridgets Cemetery

Richard Voparil, 81 of rural Solon died Sunday, August 20 in his home after a brave fight with cancer. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Fr. Wilkening and Fr. Benda presiding. Burial for Richard and Dorothy will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at St. Bridget Cemetery in rural Solon. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, at Brosh Chapel in Solon.

Richard was born icon January 12, 1925 in Solon, the son of Frank and Bessie (Psota) Voparil. His first ten years as a boy he enjoyed playing records. Later, Richard’s family moved to Iowa City where his parents owned a butcher shop on North Linn Street where he worked until it burned down in 1934. Richard then farmed with his parents by the Iowa City airport. When Richard was 18, his parents moved to Cedar County where he graduated from Tipton High School. He married Dorothy Maher January 30, 1954 in Tipton. They had four children together and farmed in Cedar and Johnson County. In 1960, they moved to their farm in Johnson County where they lived out the rest of their lives. Richard was a beloved father and husband. He enjoyed flying his airplane and was fascinated with them. He enjoyed farming, his children, grandchildren, and his many dogs. He loved to tinker around fixing things and his hobbies were making airplanes for yard decorations and bird watching. He also loved looking across at Father Benda’s and watching the geese on the pond. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. The family would again like to thank the Iowa City Hospice: Bruce, Cindy, Diane, Paula, and Lori, who if not for them, we could have never been able to keep dad home during his final few months.

Richard is survived by his son Kurtis J. (Sharon) Voparil of Solon; three daughters Susan (Randy) Hockom of Carroll, Debra (Joe) Ryan of Solon, and Lori (Joe) Sedlacek of Ely; seven grandchildren Annie, Chris, Chuck, Alex Tiffany, Jade, and Michael; and a great-grandchild Alayna. Richard is preceded into death by his parents; his wife Dorothy May 27, 2006; and a brother Robert in 1935.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be directed to the Iowa City Hospice per Richard’s request.

Tomas, Erma Eleanor

Cemetery: Memory Gardens Cemetery

Erma Eleanor Tomas, 84 of Fairfax died Wednesday, August 30, 2006 at her home. Services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 2, 2006 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, with Rev. Tom Carver presiding. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and for an hour prior to services Saturday at Brosh Chapel.

Erma was born icon February 22, 1922 in West Liberty the daughter of Ray and Elsie Hanna Smith. She married Emil Tomas on July 17, 1940 in Nashua. Erma worked as a cook for over 30 years for Mercy Hospital retiring in 1982. She was also a Stanley Dealer for over 28 years.

Erma is survived by her sons Emil (Diane) Tomas Jr. of Swisher, Edward (Barbara) Tomas of Tingley, Melvin Tomas of Norway, and Marvin Tomas of Mt. Holly, New Jersey; her daughters Nancy (Ralph) Emanuel of Fairfax and Beverley (Richard) Boddicker of Norway; seventeen grandchildren and thirty seven great-grandchildren, and a special friend Edward Swenka of Cedar Rapids. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband Emil Tomas, her sisters Dorothy Smith, Leatha Shaffer, Margaret Tomas, Charlotte Raines, Helen Kinney, and her brothers Harley and Kenneth Smith

Memorials may be directed to Sisters of Mercy.

Ciha, Viola Edna

Cemetery: Cedar Memorial Cemetery

Viola Edna Holets Ciha, 88 of 202 35th St. Dr. SE, Cedar Rapids, formerly of Center Point, passed away after a brief illness. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 8 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids with Rev. Glenn Hunt presiding. Burial will follow in Cedar Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, and for an hour prior to services Friday at the Chapel.

Viola was born icon April 12, 1918 near Swisher, the daughter of Charles W. and Agnes E. Janko Holets. She married Willard F. Ciha May 4, 1947 in Cedar Rapids, who preceded her in death September 27, 1994.

Viola is survived by her two sons Allan J (Christine) of Clive, and Lyle D (Susie) of Center Point; a granddaughter Shannon and a great-granddaughter Alexys Faith of Center Point; brother Edwin L. Holets of Cedar Rapids. She was preceded into death by her parents and a sister Charlotte Faltis. Viola graduated from Wilson High School in Cedar Rapids and from the Paris Academy of Beauty Culture. Viola was a member of the “Betty's Grove Homemaker’s Club.” She was a homemaker, and she enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and crafts.

A memorial fund has been established and contributions may be made to the Center Point Fire and Ambulance and the Walker Fire Departments. She will be missed by her family, relatives and friends.

Keith, Margaret Ann

Cemetery: Oakland Cemetery

Margaret Ann Keith, 92 of Solon died Friday, September 8, 2006 at the Solon Care Center from a lengthy illness. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 11 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Solon with Fr. David Wilkening presiding. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, September 10 at Brosh Chapel in Solon where there will be a 7 p.m. vigil service.

Margaret was born icon March 26, 1914 and raised on a farm north of Solon. She is the daughter of Ed and Mary Reyhons Brickner. Margaret attended elementary school at the Stone Academy one room school house and graduated from Solon High School in 1932. She married Dean Keith on June 20, 1936 in Solon. Dean served in the Army during World War II and was a former Commander of the Solon American Legion. They enjoyed several trips to Legion and Auxillary functions. She served as President of the Solon American Legion Auxillary Stinocher Post 460 from 1955 to 1958. Dean and Margaret were married almost 60 years. Dean passed away April 13, 1996. Margaret and Dean have five children: Marshall “Buck” (Connie) Keith of Solon, Bonnie (Jim) Washburn of Solon, Jim (Elaine) Keith of Lexington, Kentucky, Bob (Pam) Keith of San Antonio, Texas, and Kathy (Ellis) Smith of North Liberty; nine grandchildren Kirk, Jim, Kelley, Lisa, Lance, Jennifer, Michelle, Angie, and Nancy; sixteen great-grandchildren; a brother in law Harry Clark of Cedar Rapids and a sister in law Betty Brickner of Cedar Rapids. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, a brother Vernon Brickner and a sister Martha Clark.

Margaret is well known as a wonderful cook, and her specialty was fried chicken, kolaches, and all kinds of cakes and cookies. She has enjoyed her hobby of crocheting, and has made many beautiful afghans, baby blankets, doilies, and other gifts for her children, grandchildren and friends. As a special keepsake, she made her grandchildren afghans in the colors of the college they attended. Her handiwork will be treasured and passed down through her family for many years.

Margaret worked in her home raising her children, later managed the canteen at the Veterans Hospital in Iowa City, and then graduated from Iowa City Commercial College and secured a job as the office manager of the Electric Department of Iowa-Illinois Gas and Electric where she worked for many years until she retired in 1979. Margaret and Dean loved playing golf with friends at the Lake MacBride golf course. Margaret played golf until she was 84 years old. She served as an officer for the women’s golf leaguer, secretary of the Stone Academy, and as a member of the Senior Educational Advisory Group for the Solon Community School. She is a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Margaret enjoyed many years going to sports and music activities at the Solon Community School to watch her children and grandchildren. Margaret always worked very hard to make family holidays a special event. Her kindness and fun personality have earned her many friends over the years. She was a resident at the Solon Nursing Care Center, and always greeted everyone with a smile and enjoyed her family and the special holiday events.

Kessler, Donald H

Cemetery: Oakland Cemetery

Donald H. Kessler, 90 of Solon died Tuesday, September 12, 2006 at the Solon Care Nursing Center. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 15, 2006 at Brosh Chapel in Solon with Father David Wilkening officiating. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery in Solon. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Brosh Chapel in Solon and for an hour prior to services Friday at the chapel.

Donald was born icon February 13, 1916 in Big Grove Township, rural Johnson County the son of Henry and Anna Harpat Kessler. He married Sylvia Dostal September 5, 1945 in Cedar Rapids. Don had been a farmer all of his life (75 years). He was a Dairy farmer, crop farmer and raised Angus Cows. Don’s interests in life have always been about farming. One of his biggest interests was looking forward to the new Angus cows in the spring.

Donald is survived by his children: Lloyd (Colleen) Kessler, Donna Mae Kessler, and Glee Kessler all of Solon; grandchildren: Scott, Sonja Mae, Keri, Aaron, and Colby; great-grandchildren: Nicholas, Dakota, Britani Mae, and Tyler; and sister Helen Sovers of Solon. He was preceded into death by his wife Sylvia, a grandson Nicholas Kistler, an infant sister, and a brother-in-law Martin Sovers.

Kalous, George A.

Cemetery: Czech National Cemetery

George A. Kalous, 92 of 927 Memorial Drive S.E. died in his home on Thursday, September 14, 2006 after an extended illness. Services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, September 18, 2006 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids with Rev. Glenn Hunt presiding. Burial will follow in Czech National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids and for an hour prior to services Monday at the chapel.

George was born icon April 3, 1914 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Albert and Antonie Zobac Kalous. He married Louise M. Shimek August 12, 1937 in Cedar Rapids. He spent his summers working on his sister’s farm near Solon. He graduated from Grant High School in 1932 and was employed as a mail clerk in the U.S. Postal Service for 34 years. He then worked in the mail department at Collins for six years. After his retirement he and Louise spent every summer traveling throughout Europe and visiting relatives in the Czech Republic and Switzerland. In 1984 they joined a group from the East coast and traveled to Japan, China, Hong Kong, Thailand, and Singapore. On their way home they stopped in Hawaii and saw the Iowa Hawkeyes play in the Hula Bowl. Their last trip to Europe was in 1994 as George’s health prevented anymore long distance travels. George belonged to the Elks Club, V F W, American Legion, NARFE and Merimyx Club. He enjoyed fishing and hunting in his younger days.

George is survived by his wife of 69 years, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded into death by his parents, two brothers Ed and Adolph Kalous, and six sisters Clara Kucera, Bessie Zach, Libbie Cilek, Lydia Soukup, Emma Larimer, and Edna Molumby.

Memorials may be directed to the National Czech and Slovak Museum or Hospice of Mercy.
