Cemetery: Linwood Cemetery
Margaret Smyth Vornholt, 95 of Cedar Rapids died Tuesday, September 19, 2006 at Mercy Medical Center after an extended illness. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 26, 2006 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids with Rev. William Harnish presiding. Burial will follow in Linwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids and for an hour prior to services Tuesday at the chapel.
Margaret was born
August 29, 1911 near Ely the daughter of James and Lida Kelsey Smyth. She married Edward J. Vornholt on February 17, 1941 in Cedar Rapids. Margaret lived in Swisher on a farm with her husband, and in the 1960’s they moved to Cedar Rapids. She was a loving, caring person to everyone that she knew. Margaret loved to cook and bake especially kolaches, as well quilting, and enjoyed listening and playing music. She also attended and was a member of the Ely Friendship Club.
Margaret is survived by her nieces Aileen See, Kathryn Louise Smyth; nephews Marvin (Sharon) Smyth, James L.(Sally) Smyth, and Ted (MaryLe) Smyth; 7 great nieces and nephews, as well as her close family friends, the Pisney, Knott, Schumacher and Votroubek families, and her caregiver Lenora Jiroutek. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ed on December 18, 1993; and brothers Harvey, Delbert, and Wilbur Smyth, and a special friend Ben Votroubek.

Kistler - Williams, Sonja Mae
Cemetery: Oakland Cemetery
Sonja Mae Kistler-Williams, 34 of Solon died Saturday, September 23 in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Brosh Chapel in Solon were there will be a Celebration of Life service at 7 p.m. A private family inurnment will be held in Oakland Cemetery.
Sonja is survived by her daughter Britani Hacker of North Liberty, a son Dakota Williams of Solon, her mother Donna Kessler of Solon, her father Charles (Linda) Kistler of Comer, Georgia, her sisters Keri Kistler of Solon, Lynn Woodall of Royceton, Georgia, and Melanie Kistler of Comer, Georgia, and her grandfather Karl Kistler of North Liberty. She is preceded in death by her son Nicholas Kistler, and grandparents Don and Sylvia Kessler and Ruth Kistler.

(Tate) Holt, Lily Mae
Cemetery: Memory Gardens Cemetery
Lily Mae (Tate) Holt, 83 of Cedar Rapids went to be with the Lord Tuesday, September 26, 2006 at St. Luke’s Hospital. A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 30, 2006 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids with Rev. Diehl presiding. Private family inurnment will be held Monday at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City.
Lily was born
April 30, 1923 in Cedar Rapids the daughter of Alex William and Emma Rachel Francis Tate. She married Carter Holt June 30, 1961 in Iowa City.
Lily is survived by a nephew Jack Reed of Chicago and a host of great nieces and great nephews. She also leaves behind her beloved cat, Ninja. Lily was preceded in death by her parents Alex and Emma Tate; her husband Carter Holt; three sisters Bertha Perkins, Jane Viola (Jack) Frazier, and Mildred (Smidge) O’bannon; three brothers James, Junior “Bud”, and Sidney Tate.

Svec, Arnold Louis
Cemetery: Anderson Cemetery ~ Swisher
Arnold “Arnie” Svec, 75 of Swisher died Monday, October 02, 2006 at Mercy Medical Center from a battle with cancer. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 Friday at St. Patrick Church in Cedar Rapids. Burial will follow in Anderson Cemetery in Swisher, with full military rites conducted by the Swisher American Legion Post 671. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday where there will be 5 p.m. vigil at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids.
Arnold was born
December 7, 1930 on the southwest of Swisher, the son of Louis and Barbara Pospisil Svec. He went to Dupont grade school and Roosevelt High School in Cedar Rapids. He married Louellen Kadera on October 6, 1953 at St. Mary’s Church in Oxford. He served in the US Army during the Korean War from 1951- 1953. Arnie worked for over 38 years at Cherry Burrell Corporation. He was a member of the WFLA Lodge #400, the Amercian Legion Post 671, St. Patricks Church, UAW Local 1024 and worked part time for Cerveny Farms and the City of Swisher. Arnie liked fishing, dancing and working with metal. He enjoyed spending time with his family and liked to joke around with his grandsons.
Arnie is survived by his wife Louellen of 53 years; two daughters Kathy (Stanley) Misbach of Marengo, and Penny (Kevin) Zacek of Swisher; a son Larry (Ginny) Svec of Swisher; five grandsons Michael Misbach, Matt and Carl Svec, Marcus and Tyler Zacek; two brothers Melvin (Jody) Svec and Verne (Virginia) Svec; a sister Diane(Darrell) Gladwin all of Cedar Rapids. He is preceded in death by his parents, a niece Julie Svec.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Swisher Fire Department, Swisher American Legion, St. Patricks Church, Hospice of Mercy or the Anna Ghosh Foundation.
Vavra, Edwin J.
Cemetery: Church Cemetery
Edwin Vavra, 97 died Friday, October 13, 2006, at Higley Mansion Care Center from natural causes. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 17, 2006, at First Presbyterian Church, near Ely. Burial will follow in the First Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids.
Ed was born
July 10, 1909 in Linn County, the son of Joseph and Beatrice Filipi Vavra. He married Olga Biderman on August 5, 1933, in Ely.
Ed graduated from Washington High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and attended Coe College where he played in the marching band for Herbert Hoover’s inauguration. In 1930, Ed purchased the Ely Lumber Yard where he worked faithfully for 70 years; except for the two years he served overseas in WWII. Ed never officially retired.
Ed was a member of various organizations including the Harmony Hawks, American Legion St. Quentin Post #555, the Ely I.O.O.F. Lodge 581, and was a 37 year member of the Ely Volunteer Fire Department. He was a life long member of the First Presbyterian Church, near Ely.
Ed is survived by his son Joe (Joyce) Vavra of Ely; grandchildren Amy Vavra and Edwin (Theresa) Vavra; great grandchildren Gabrielle Armstrong, and Josef and Jakob Vavra; brother Chuck (Irene) Vavra; brother-in-law Adolph “Mike” Biderman and sisters-in-law Agnes Vavra and Lenore Biderman. Edwin was preceded in death by his parents; wife Olga on November 22, 2002; three brothers Frank, Lumir, Arnold and a twin sister.
A memorial fund has been established in his name.
Havlik, Helen Marie
Cemetery: Czech National Cemetery
Helen Marie Havlik, 92 of Lansing, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, October 16 at Thornton Manor from natural causes. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, October 19 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids. Burial will follow in Czech National Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Brosh Chapel.
Helen was born
May 28, 1914 in Cedar Rapids the daughter of William and Emma Leffelbein Mann. She married Adolph Havilk on December 5, 1936 in Ely. Helen worked for over 25 years for Wilson Meat Packing. She retired in May of 1971. They moved to Lansing after retiring and fished on the Mississippi River in the summers and spent many winters in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas in a retiree’s park. They made many friends at the park from across the United States and southern Canada. There was never a dull moment at the park with entertainment including exercise, potlucks, cards, bingo, and church.
Helen is survived by a son Robert (Marilyn) Havlik of Cedar Rapids; a daughter Shirley Wolfe of Mesa, Arizona; grandchildren Doug, Kaleen, Carrie, Kimberly, and Jeffrey; 6 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents and her husband, Adolph who died September 12, 2004; and a son in law John Wolfe; two brothers, Ed and Irwin “Shorty”, and a sister Louise.

Horak, Mary A.

Mary Amelia Horak, 91 of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, October 18 at her daughters home in Mercer, Missouri. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 23, 2006 at St. Ludmilas Cathlolic Church with Fr. Tom McDermott officiating. Burial will follow in Czech National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids were there will be a 4 p.m. vigil.
Mary was born
on June 5, 1915 in Mar-Lin, Pennsylvania the daughter of Matthew and Veronica Wynosky Margiawicz. She worked as a seamstress in Philadelphia in the shirt factories before the war. She married the sailor “that swept her off her feet” on February 16, 1942. They lived in Norfolk, Virginia, Mankato, Minnesota, Ely and Cedar Rapids, Iowa where Marvin finished his Naval career. She worked at Clemons Canvas Shop and Tom Shaws Canvas and Upholstery from which she retired. She was a member of St. Ludmila’s Catholic Church and St. Mary’s Circle. She was also a member of the Cedar Rapids Women's Fleet Reserve. Mary loved sewing, canning, and her family and friends. In later years when she moved to Missouri to live with her daughter and son in law Marsha and Norman, she loved watching geese and ducks on the lake. Her favorite ice cream was strawberry and she loved to watch her favorite football team the Denver Broncos, and was also very fond of the two family dogs Sassy and Ruby.
Mary is survived by a daughter Marsha (Norman) Broussard of Mercer, Missouri and Marcella K. Horak of Cedar Rapids; a sister Florence Navalonic of Jacksonville, North Carolina; grandson Zachariah Hale of Denver, Colorado; granddaughter Jennifer Hale and two great grandchildren Capria Davis and Brayden Wright all of Cedar Rapids.
Preceded in death by her parents, her husband Marvin who died January 26, 1989, her two brothers and six sisters.

Marshall, Donald Edward
Donald Edward Marshall, 58, of Solon, died Wednesday, October, 18, 2006 after a sudden illness. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 23, 2006 at Brosh Chapel in Solon. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Brosh Chapel in Solon.
Donald was born
June 12, 1948 in Bessemer, Alabama the son of Charles E. and Nell Pitts Marshall. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He married Jo A. Krotz on June 28, 1975 in Solon. Don loved driving a truck, fishing, spending time with his grandkids, working in the yard and spending time with his family. He was an avid Nascar fan.
Don is survived by his wife Jo of Solon; daughters Toni (Steve) Soltys of Bayville, New Jersey, Amy (Tony) Wilcox and Angie (Josh) Serovy all of North Liberty; a son Scott E. (Sandra) Marshall of North Brunswick, New Jersey; grandchildren Matthew, Haley, Hailey, Kevin, Drew, Madison, and Mallory; his mother and stepfather Nell and Walter Runk of Willow Hill, Pennsylvania; stepmother Marjorie Marshall of Rahway, New Jersey; a sister Sheila Hurley of Keansburg, New Jersey; and a brother Louie (Barbara) Marshall of Rahway, New Jersey.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents, his father and a brother in law Joey Hurley.
