Stangler McArtor, Leona

Cemetery: Cedar Memorial Cemetery

Leona Rose Stangler McArtor, 91 of 61 18th Avenue SW, died Monday, January 29, 2007 at St. Luke’s Living Center West. Services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 2 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, with burial following at Cedar Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday and for an hour prior to services Friday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids.

Leona was born icon June 13, 1915 in Amana, the daughter of Edward and Rosalie Erusha Stangler. She married Gerald J. McArtor on December 9, 1931 in Aledo, Illinois. Leona worked at Killians, Turners, and Mercy Hospital. Leona was a member of The Swisher American Legion Auxiliary 671, The Edgewood Baptist Church, The Kidney Foundation of Iowa, The Maccabees, and The Top Notch Club.

Leona is survived by her son Richard J McArtor and his wife Betty; her daughter-in-law Joyce McArtor all of Cedar Rapids; 6 grandchildren: Kelli Trevino, Teresa McArtor, Steven McArtor, Douglas McArtor, Kevin McArtor, and Marc Koplin; 12 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; and a long time friend Polly Beers. She was preceded in death by her parents Edward and Rosalie Erusha Stangler; her husband Gerald McArtor; a son Edward Gerald McArtor; a brother Edward Stangler; and a sister Betty Stearns.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Ewert, Ronney Lee

Cemetery: Anderson Cemetery

Ronney Lee Ewert, our wonderful and loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend, went to be with the Lord on Friday, February 2, 2007 at the age of 69 after a courageous and hard fought battle with cancer. Services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 10, 2007 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids. Burial will follow at Anderson Cemetery in Swisher. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and for an hour prior to services Saturday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids.

Ronney was born icon in Hillsboro, Kansas on May 24, 1937. On August 27, 1959 Ronney married Elaine Wilma Sternad whom he spent the rest of his life with. Ronney’s love and passion for his children and grandchildren was unmatched. He enjoyed attending family functions and lived for watching his children and grandchildren participate and compete in a variety of activities. Ronney worked diligently for Ozark Airlines/TWA for 35 years. In 1992 he retired from the airline industry and chose to spend the winter months in Las Vegas, a tradition he faithfully followed for the past 12 years with his loving wife. Ronney owned the Ewert’s Skyway Lounge with his wife for nearly 8 ½ amazing years where many wonderful friends were made and many unforgettable memories were forged.

Ronney is survived by his his wife of 47 years, Elaine, son Scott Ewert and wife Lori, children Aaron and Kierstyn from Wichita, Kansas, daughter Lori Sweeney and husband Gary, children Ryan, Karlee, and Kellen from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, daughter Julie Hollingsworth, husband Scott, children Logan and Bailey from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, brother Lowell Ewert and wife Joyce from Geneseo, Illinois, sister Joann Mann from Ely, Iowa, sister Carolyn Simpson and husband Lynn from Pratt, Kansas. Ronney was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Hilda Ewert.

Ronney will be truly missed by all who knew him though he will never be forgotten. The family of Ronney Ewert would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the University of Iowa Hospital, the 7th floor of Mercy Medical Center, Hospice of Mercy, and the Oncology Association for their loving compassion and care throughout the twilight of Ronney’s life until his peaceful departure.

In lieu of flowers memorials requested to Hospice of Mercy in memory of Ronney.

Walden, Helen Maxine

Cemetery: Hazelwood Cemetery

Helen Maxine Robinson Johnson Walden, 89 of Cedar Rapids and formerly of Des Moines and Grinnell, died Friday, February 2, 2007 at Northbrook Manor Care Center. As per her wishes, her body will be donated to the Department of Anatomy at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. A memorial service and inurnment will be held at a later date at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.

Maxine was born icon January 2, 1918 in Des Moines the daughter of John William and Sarah Christina Myers Robinson. She attended Drake University, receiving a Bachelor’s degree in English and Music. She resided in Geneva, Marshalltown, Union, and Grinnell, Iowa. She gave piano lessons and taught music for the Grinnell Newburg School System. She also worked for the Grinnell College Development Office and later as secretary to the Dean of the college.

She is survived by her brother Jack (Carol) Robinson of Springfield, Illinois; her daughter Lynn Ann Johnson Dragoo of Menominee, Michigan; her son-in-law James Ernest Sixta of Cedar Rapids; three grandchildren James Ernest (Debra) Sixta II of Des Moines, Sara Christine (Adam) Sixta Hunter of Cedar Rapids, Brianna Kay Dragoo of Menominee, Michigan; and two great-grandchildren Samantha Christina Sixta of Des Moines, and Ian Dale Hunter of Cedar Rapids. Maxine was preceded into death by her parents John William Robinson and Sarah Christina Myers Robinson, her two husbands Dale Johnson, and Evan Walden; and her daughter Dale Christine Johnson Sixta.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Rapids Hospice.

Hynek, Elsie Lillian

Cemetery: Czech National Cemetery

Elsie L. Hynek, 90 of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, February 15, 2007 at Mercy Medical Center after complications from Parkinson’s disease. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 19 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, with burial following in Czech National Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Brosh Chapel.

Elsie was born icon May 18, 1916 in rural Johnson County, the daughter of Charles and Anna Kucera Tomash. She married Charles F. Hynek on July 20, 1938. Elsie was very proud of her Czech heritage, from the music to the food. She loved to bake, especially kolaches.

Elsie is survived by her son Steve (Katrena) Hynek of Fairfax; daughter Nancy (Bill) Bolt of Traer; 7 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; and a sister Gladys Kolek of Cedar Rapids.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Charles on August 16, 1992; her son Vernon Hynek; and her brother Charles Tomash.

Memorials may be directed to the Hospice of Mercy.

Becicka, Norma Lohman

Cemetery: Cedar Memorial Cemetery

Norma (Lohman) Becicka, 92 of Ely died Sunday, February 18, 2007 at the Hallmark Care Center in Mt. Vernon. Services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 21 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids with burial following in Cedar Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. until service time Wednesday at Brosh Chapel.

Norma was born icon April 20, 1914 in Independence, the daughter of Ben and Emma Dake Lohman. She married John Becicka April 16, 1942 in Cedar Rapids. She worked for many years in the catering business as well as being a professional home cleaner. She was a past member of the YWCA. Norma loved to cook, bake, and listen to the Cubs. She was an avid Hawkeye sports fan.

Norma is survived by her daughter Sharon (Douglas) Brokel of Ely; five grandchildren: Scott (Michelle) Brokel, Ted Brokel, Darren (Debbie Seibles) Brokel, Chris Brokel, and Julie (Jim) Hendricks; and seven great-grandchildren: John, Jill, Jake, Jessie, Jake, Emma, and Sam. Norma is preceded in death by her sisters and brothers Clara Shook, Cecilia Hickey, Edna Pudil, Laura Hickey, Lydia Lohman, Martin Lohman and Leonard Lohman.

Memorials may be directed to the American Diabetes Association.

Achey, Richard

Cemetery: Clarence Cemetery ~ Clarence, Iowa

Richard Achey, 61 of Solon died suddenly, Sunday, March 18, 2007 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday, March 22, at Brosh Chapel in Solon where full military rites will be conducted by the Solon American Legion Stinocher Post 460.. Burial will follow in Clarence Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Brosh Chapel in Solon, and for an hour prior to services Thursday at the Chapel. A luncheon to celebrate Dick’s life will be from 11:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Thursday, March 22 at the Solon American Legion.

Dick was born icon December 11, 1945 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Earl and Ada (Harmon) Achey. Dick served in the Navy from 1964 until 1975. He worked for American Gaming and he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and boating. He was an active member of the Solon American Legion.

Dick is survived by his brother Robert (Carol) Achey of Cedar Rapids; sisters Bettie (Virgle) Van Amburg of Norwalk, and Karen (Keith) Dennis of Clarence; and a good friend Orlie J. Workman.

Memorials may be directed to the family at 401 5th Avenue P.O. Box 338, Clarence, Iowa 52216.

Brokel, Irvin Douglas

Irvin Douglas Brokel, 65 of 1575 Ivanhoe Road, near Ely, died Tuesday, March 27, 2007 at Mercy Medical Center. A memorial service will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 31, 2007 at the Lisbon United Methodist Church in Lisbon. There will be a visitation and reception following services in the Church hall. Inurnment will be at a later date in Rogers Grove Cemetery, near Ely.

Doug was born icon September 16, 1941 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Irvin and Marrianne Butteris Brokel. He married Sharon Becicka on March 21, 1959, in Ely, with the recent celebration of 48 wonderful years together. “Kolachie” worked as a professional truck driver for over 40 years. Doug enjoyed hunting, fishing, vacationing in the west and following his grandchildren’s activities. Doug and Sharon spent many weekends enjoying time with their family and friends, camping, and taking Sunday drives.

Doug is survived by his wife, Sharon; their children Scott (Michelle) Brokel, Ted Brokel, Christine Brokel, Julie (Jim) Hendricks, Darren Brokel (Debbie Siebels); and eight grandchildren Nick, John, Jill, Jake, Jessie, Jake, Emma and Sam; his sisters Laurie (Jim) Holmes, JoKay Meissner, and brothers Lon (Deb) Hoke, and Tom (Cindy) Hoke.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents Irvin Brokel, Marrianne Hoke, a brother Alvin “Dicky” Brokel, and parent-in-law’s John and Norma Becicka.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to The Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy.

Taylor, Aldene

Cemetery: Ames Municipal Cemetery

Aldene Taylor, 97 of Solon, died Wednesday, March 28, 2007 in her home of natural causes. A funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, April 2, 2007 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Solon, with visitation an hour prior to services at the Church. A luncheon will be served after the service with burial following in Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Aldene was born icon on November 10, 1909 in Lexington, Illinois the daughter of James and Teresa Kinsella. She was raised in Ames, Iowa and married Everett (Lee) Taylor on August 12, 1933. She lived and worked as a bookkeeper in Ames. After the war, she and her husband moved to Waterloo. She was a bookkeeper for many years. Her husband passed away in 1975. She moved to Marshalltown, Iowa in 1990 after she retired. She moved to Solon in 2001, where she lived in her own apartment at the Solon Retirement Village. Aldene loved playing bridge, sewing, organ and spending time with her family.

Aldene is survived by her sister Margaret Kilpatrick of Harlan, Iowa; several nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and nephews and great-grand nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, a sister and a brother.

A memorial fund has been established in her name, and memorials may be directed to the family at: 1 Lyn Den Drive NE, Iowa City, Iowa 52240.
