Mary Jewel Pilcher Walter Santee, 85, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, April 1, 2007 at St. Lukes Hospital

Mary Jewel Pilcher Walter Santee, 85, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, April 1, 2007 at St. Lukes Hospital. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 4, 2007 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, with burial following in Oak Shade Cemetery in Marion. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Brosh Chapel and for an hour prior to services at the chapel in Cedar Rapids.

Mary was born icon April 29, 1921 in a railroad depot in Rowena, South Dakota, the daughter of Ora and Nancy (Nichols) Pilcher. She was employed at Rockwell Collins for 30 years, retiring in January 1984. She loved helping people, and enjoyed sewing, knitting and crocheting special items for her children and grandchildren. She will be dearly missed.

Mary is survived by her daughter Karen (David) Kroeger of Marion; brothers Tom (Nancy) Pilcher of Burlington and Charles (Joanne) Pilcher of Norfolk, VA; grandchildren David, Eric and Andy Kroeger, William Walter III and Linda Welp, step-grandchildren Jeannie, Ken and Michael and several nieces and nephews. She will also be missed by Jason, Angela, Aurora, Justina and Amber Cook.

She was preceded in death by her parents, stepmothers Naomi and Agnes; her first husband William Walter, her son William Jr., brother Victor and sisters Alice and Dixie.

Memorials may be directed to the family at 525 6th Ave., Marion, IA 52302. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 4, 2007 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, with burial following in Oak Shade Cemetery in Marion. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Brosh Chapel and for an hour prior to services at the chapel in Cedar Rapids.

Ellison, Dorothy Ann

Cemetery: Mt. Vernon Cemetery

Dorothy Ellison, 91, of Mt. Vernon, died Thursday, April 5 at the Solon Care Center. Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 11 at Brosh Chapel in Solon. Burial will follow in Mt. Vernon Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 10 at Brosh Chapel in Solon and for an hour prior to services Wednesday at the chapel.

Dorothy was born icon March 10, 1916, in Johnson County near Oakdale, the daughter of Philip and Anna Feldman Gough. Dorothy went to high school in Iowa City at St. Mary’s, graduating in 1933. She attended the University of Iowa for two years. Dorothy met Gordon Ellison at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in rural Solon and were married November 26, 1941, in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City. They lived and farmed in the North Liberty area until the mid 1950s and then moved to a farm north of Mt. Vernon. Dorothy worked at the Cornell College Business Office and the Cole Library for 20 years. She then began a second career as a secretary and office manager for a local advertising agency and decided to retire at the age of 80. She was also a long standing member of St. John’s Catholic Church and the Century Club in Mount Vernon.

Dorothy is survived by her children: Bill Ellison of Mt. Vernon; James Ellison of Iowa City; Margaret Ellison-Duffy of Mt. Vernon; and Mary Colee (Ted) of Eugene, Oregon; ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Marge Gough of Coralville and Mary Wolrab of Mt. Vernon, and a brother-in-law, Arlo Ellison (Jean) of Stevensville, Montana. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, Gordon, who died September 14, 2002, a sister Geneva Dee and brothers Leonard and Lawrence Gough.

Dorothy loved cooking for special events and celebrations. She had an Irish infectious sense of humor, was quick with a smile and a helping hand. Dot loved traveling, including trips to Europe and Russia, and throughout the United States. Vegetable and flower gardening, antique collecting and spending time with her family were all things she loved to do.

Memorials may be directed to Sts. Peter and Paul Foundation, Camp Courageous or to the family at 710 Ivanhoe Road, Mt. Vernon, IA 52314.

Driscoll, Patricia W.

Cemetery: St. Joseph's Cemetery

Patricia W. Driscoll, 80 of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, April 6 at Mercy Medical Center. Funeral mass will be 9:30 a.m. Friday, April 13, 2007 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with inurnment held at a later date in St. Joseph’s Cemetery rural Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday where there will be a 7 p.m. parish rosary.

Patricia was born icon July 5, 1926 in Sharon Township in Johnson County, the daughter of William and Eleanor Hurt Fuhrmeister. She married Joseph Driscoll on April 20, 1945 in Peoria, Illinois.

Patricia is survived by: daughters Doreen Goslin(Patrick) of Port Charlotte, Florida, Loreen “Lori” Hanson(Rick) of Toddville; sons Jerry A. Driscoll(Marilyn) of Hiawatha, Steven D. Driscoll(Luann) of St. Peters, Missouri, Anthony Driscoll(Julee) of Omaha, and Joseph “Jay” Driscoll(Janelle) of Cedar Rapids; eleven grandchildren Angie, Amy, Shelley, Jerry J., Leslie, Brandon, Sara, Jason, Cody, Kayla, and Troy; eight great-grandchildren Noah, Natalie, Claire, Ava, Gabrielle, Samantha, Taryn and Olivia; a brother William Fuhrmeister(Sandra) of Iowa City.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband Joseph Sr., who died January 28, 2001, an infant daughter Shelley, her brothers Keith and Theodore Fuhrmeister, and a son in law Scott Goslin.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the family at 3440 Midway Road, Toddville, Iowa 52341.

Rozinek, Louis

Cemetery: St. Johns Catholic Cemetery

Louis Rozinek, 92 of Ely, died Tuesday, April 10 of natural causes at his home. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday, April 14, 2007 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. Burial will follow in St. Johns Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids where there will be a 6 p.m. rosary recited by the Knights of Columbus 5677.

Louis was born icon in Chicago, Illinois the son of Alois and Frances Adam Rozinek. He married Josephine Hartl on May 1, 1940 at St. Ludmila’s Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. Louis farmed in the Solon and Ely areas all of his life.

Louis is survived by his wife Josephine; daughters Patricia (Bunyan) Howell, and Rose (Bob) Carlo; sons John (Bernita) Rozinek, and Edward Rozinek all of Ely; grandchildren: Brian Howell, Lisa (Tim) Hinricher, Stacey (Kevin) Pidima, RaeAnne (Max) Diers, Stacy (Rick) Steffen, Tammy (Dave) Perrin, Todd (Kari) Viall. great-grandchildren: Zach, Rebecca, Bailey, Samantha, Tyler, Madison, Lauren, Shawn, Jarod, Jessie, Taylor, Connor, Emily, Justin, Blake, and Brooklyn; sisters Marie Kroul, Libbie (Jim) Stahle, and Rose Ulch; and brothers Jim Rozinek, and Chuck (Rose) Rozinek.

Louis was preceded in death by his parents; sister Millie Krob; and brothers Joe, Frank, George, Vic, and Paul Rozinek.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Huffer Jr., Theodore Everett

Cemetery: Sulek Cemetery

Theodore “Ted” Everett Huffer Jr., 74 of Solon died Sunday, April 22, 2007 at his home. Memorial service will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday April 25 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be one hour prior to services Wednesday at the Chapel. A private family inurnment will be in Sulek Cemetery near Shueyville.

Ted was born icon August 3, 1932 in Trenton, Missouri the son of Theodore and Jessie Mae Nolan Huffer Sr. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was discharged as a sergeant. Ted married Darlene Cornwell on February 26, 1955 in Trenton, Missouri. He worked for over 43 years at Penford until his retirement in 1995. He was a member of the American Federation of Grain Millers Local 100 and was the union president from 1980-1990. He was a very avid bowler and pinochle card player. He always enjoyed spending time with family and friends and listening to country music.

Ted is survived by his children Everett (Lisa) Huffer, Sharon Huffer all of Cedar Rapids, Garry Huffer of Solon, and Dennis (Shelly) Huffer of Alburnett; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents and his wife Darlene who died December 16, 2000.

Memorials may be directed to the Childrens Miracle Network.

Varn, Carolyn

Cemetery: Calvary Cemetery

Carolyn Balkus Varn, 87 of Solon, died Friday, May 11 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City from a sudden illness. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 14, 2007 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Solon. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and for an hour prior to services Monday at the church. There will be a 7 p.m. vigil. Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at Calvary Cemetery in Omaha, NE.

Carolyn was born icon September 11, 1919 in Omaha, NE, the daughter of Michael and Cecelia (Waszgis) Balkus. She married Leonard Varn on May 12, 1942 in Omaha.

Carolyn had an amazing work ethic and was a hard worker her whole life. She was a news “junkie, ” especially political and financial reporting. She loved to read, work puzzles, and play board games, Scrabble in particular. Her mind was active until the end and her spirit indomitable. Carolyn loved angels and her family gave her many angel figurines which she displayed throughout her home. May she now forever be at rest with her beloved angels.

Carolyn is survived by her children: Michael (Janice) Varn of Gordon, NE, Sandra Varn of Cedar Rapids, Gary (Ann) Varn of Marion, John Varn of Solon, and Richard (Kari) Varn of Des Moines; grandchildren: Katherine (Steve) Hawkins of Hyde Park, NY, Sarah Varn of Colorado Springs, CO, Emily Varn of Des Moines, Hannah Varn of Marion, Abby Varn of Marion, and Jacob Varn of Des Moines; sister Helen McCoy of Papillion, NE; and special friends Julia Burton and Al (Brenda) Welsch. Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Leonard Varn; sisters Agnes Nelson and Nellie Perry; brothers Joe, John, and Bernard Balkus; and nephews Bernard Balkus Jr. and Eric Balkus.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St Mary’s Catholic Church, Solon, IA or Tanager Place, Cedar Rapids, IA.
