DuBuis, Edna M.

Cemetery: Rogers Grove Cemetery

Edna M. DuBuis, 91 of Solon, died Friday, August 10, 2007 at her niece’s house from a sudden illness. Graveside services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 12 at Rogers Grove Cemetery rural Ely.

Edna was born icon September 6, 1915 in Hasbrook Heights, New Jersey the daughter of Adolphe and Adel Hausknecht DuBuis.

Edna is survived by her nephew Ernest DuBuis of Sigourney; greatniece and nephews Pam (Andy) Kacmarynski and Jeffrey DuBuis all of Solon; five great-greatnieces and nephews and one great-greatgreat niece. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother Adolphe DuBuis, a sister Helen McHugh and a niece Mary Sue DuBuis.

Memorials may be made in her name to the Animal Welfare Foundation, 2512 Davenport Avenue, Oxford Junction, Iowa 52323.

Brownfield, Leroy Virgil

Leroy Virgil Brownfield, 93 of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, August 16, 2007 at Willow Gardens Care Center. Memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 20, 2007 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be an hour prior to services Monday at Brosh Chapel. Private family inurnment will be at a later date.

Leroy was born icon January 23, 1914 in Cora, Missouri. He married Elsie Hiemstra. Leroy retired from Wilson’s Packing Plant after 35 years. He enjoyed playing cards and having a good time. He often liked to shop at second hand stores and find treasures for him and his family.

Leroy is survived by his wife Elsie; daughter Harriett Wiggins; granddaughters Bridgette Brownfield and Tricia Inman; grandsons Brian Brownfield, Todd Beyer, and Toby Beyer; seven great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law Rose Regan; and a special friend, Harry Birch.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sons Mitchell Brownfield and Virgil Brownfield.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Kacere, Georgina

Cemetery: St. George Cemetery

Georgina Kacere, Cedar Rapids, died peacefully on Monday, August 20, 2007 with her brother, sister and sister-in-law at her side in Gordon, Nebraska. The funeral will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 27 at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church at 3650 Cottage Grove Avenue SE with Father Fred Shaheen officiating. Burial will follow in St. George Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at St. George Church with a Trisagion Service following at 7:00 p.m. Brosh Chapel, Cedar Rapids is in charge of arrangements.

Georgina (Nina) was born icon in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of the Rev. Joseph and Mary Kacere. Nina graduated from Wilson High School in Cedar Rapids. She worked at Newmans Department Store, Kacere’s Town and Country Shop, the Cedar Rapids Water Department, Sears and Collins Credit Union where she retired from after 30 years of service.

Nina was a life long resident of Cedar Rapids and a life time member of St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church. Nina will always be remembered as a “classy lady” who was always dressed in the most fashionable styles. She was an avid reader who always enjoyed a good book. She loved jazz and the music of Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. Her life revolved around her family - she never forgot the birthdays of her brothers or sister or their children. Nina had three dogs (Gigi, Tiger and Missy) that she adored.

Nina is survived by her sister Jennie David of Chadron, NE; her brother, Dr. Michael and wife Loretta Kacere of Gordon, NE and a sister-in-law, Betty Kacere (George) of Cedar Rapids. She was preceded in death by her parents, the Rev. Joseph and Mary Kacere and two brothers, Frank and George and a brother-in-law, Dr. Richard David. She is survived by 9 nephews and nieces and 15 great nephews and nieces.

Memorials to honor Nina can be made to St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church.

Lumbus, George David

Cemetery: Anderson Cemetery

George David Lumbus, 76 of Swisher died Friday, August 31, 2007 at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City after a lengthy illness. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 8, 2007 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids. Burial will follow in Anderson Cemetery in rural Swisher where there will be full military rites performed by the Swisher American Legion Post 671. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday September 7 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids.

George was born icon February 21, 1931 in Dunkerton, the son of Raymond and Katherine (Bartels) Lumbus. He married Ruth Olds on December 20, 1953 in Aurora, they later divorced. George was united in marriage to Joyce Owens on November 7, 1992 in Cedar Rapids. He served as Corporal for the US Marine Corp. from 1951 until 1953. George owned and operated George’s Appliance for 35 years. He was a member of the Eagles and the Swisher American Legion. He enjoyed boating, camping, playing cards, and bowling. He will be remembered for his good sense of humor.

George is survived by his wife Joyce Lumbus; his daughters Jeannie (Roger) Dykstra of Marion, Kat Moses of Cedar Rapids, and Deb Talley of Cedar Rapids; a son Ray Owens of Mechesney Park, IL; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and his brothers Raymond Lumbus of California, and Alvie Lumbus of Florida.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his son Steven David Lumbus.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Knight, Jerome C.

Cemetery: Newport Cemetery

Jerome (Jerry) Charles Knight, 55 of Solon, died Sunday, September 9, 2007 at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City after a short illness. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 12, 2007 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, with burial to follow in Newport Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Brosh Chapel in Solon.

Jerry is survived by his wife Mary; sons Jeremy and Nicholas; daughter Kate (Kevin) Chalupa; step-daughter Rebecca Shirazi; his father, Garland Knight of West Union; sisters Jane Marshall, Jeanette (Dale) Buenzow, Judy (Crayton) Ash, Janice (Tim) Underdahl, Joanne Frey, Julie Eckhoff; brothers James Knight and Joseph (Judy) Knight; 49 nephews and nieces; and 59 great-nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his mother Mary; sister Janet (Paul) Sieverding; nieces Jill Peters, Marissa Marshall, and Sarah Jaeger.

Jerry was born icon June 1, 1952 in West Union. He attended Holy Name Catholic Schools and North High School where he was active in sports and scouting. He spent most of his career working for Seedorff Masonry where he was a bricklayer and Superintendent.

Jerry was passionate about life and about his family. He had a deep and enduring love for his soulmate, Mary and also for his loving children. He loved to work outdoors and to fish and camp with his family. He had a passion for hard work and quality workmanship. He was driven to help others, whether he was serving as a volunteer firefighter in Coralville or taking garden vegetables to food pantries in the local area. Jerry was always looking for a way to serve his friends and neighbors. He had many dear friends.

Memorials may be directed to the Coralville Volunteer Fire Department and/or to the family which will make a donation later on his behalf.

Shaheen, Delores Ann

Cemetery: St. George Cemetery

Delores Ann Shaheen, 77 of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, September 13, 2007 at her home after a lengthy battle with Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, September 17, 2007 at St. George Orthodox Church with Fr. Fred Shaheen presiding. Burial will follow in St. George Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at St. George Orthodox Church with a Trisagion Service following at 7:00 p.m. Brosh Chapel, Cedar Rapids is in charge of arrangements.

Delores was born icon March 9, 1930 in Toledo, Ohio, the daughter of Mike and Rosa (Damous) Skaff. Delores married Donald Leroy Shaheen on August 20, 1950 in Charleston, West Virginia. She worked at Rockwell Child Development and Equifax Service.

Delores is survived by her angels: Drew (Lori) Shaheen of Arvada, Colorado, Dionne (Bill) Pinckney, Tracey Shaheen, and Thomas Shaheen all of Cedar Rapids, her three wonderful grandsons: Blake, Jordan, and Adam Pinckney; her siblings: Evelyn Dodrill of Charleston, West Virginia, France Edwards of Nitro, West Virginia, and Jeanette (Donald) Kellerman of Cedar Rapids; her wonderful in-laws; many nieces, nephews, and friends; and her dog Alpine.

She was preceded in death by her husband Don; her parents; and two brothers: Joseph Skaff and Eli Skaff.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to St. George Orthodox Church, MDA-ALS Division, and/or the Hospice of Mercy.

Sedlacek, Elmer Joseph

Cemetery: Dupont Cemetery

Elmer Joseph Sedlacek, 85, of Swisher, died Saturday, September 15, 2007 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice Home. Funeral Mass will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 19, 2007 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. Burial will be 1:45 p.m. in Dupont Cemetery rural Swisher. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, where there will be a 6 p.m. vigil followed by a rosary.

Elmer was born icon November 22, 1921 in rural Swisher, the son of Joseph and Eleanor Dvorak Sedlacek. He graduated from Shueyville High School. Elmer farmed nearly his entire life in the Swisher area. He enjoyed spending time working and maintaining the Sedlacek Century Farm, even after his retirement. He served his community as the Monroe Township clerk and cemetery sexton for many years. He was also a charter member of the Rathkamp Matchcover Society. Elmer was a very devoted husband and caregiver to his wife Mary Rose for many years.

Elmer is survived by his wife Mary Rose; a daughter Delores Sedlacek; and a brother Marvin (Barbara) Sedlacek of Surf City, New Jersey.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter Diane Sedlacek on October 7, 1987; and an infant brother Wilmer.

Memorial may be directed to the family.
