Buresh, Wesley Frank
Cemetery: Buresh Cemetery
Wesley Frank Buresh, 100 of Ely died Tuesday, September 25 at Mercy Medical Center from a brief illness. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 28 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, September 27 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids where there will be a 6 p.m. vigil.
Wesley was born
November 5, 1906 in Western, the son of John and Emma Lorenc Buresh. He married Lenora Barta on April 12, 1939 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. Wes was a dairy farmer in the Ely area all his life. He loved to garden, spend time outside in nature and planting many fruit trees were a few of the things he enjoyed the most.
Wes is survived by his wife Lenora of over 68 years; a daughter Sharon (Don) Pfab of Coggon; sons Glenn (Frances) Buresh, Ben (Ranae) Buresh and Wes (Margie) Buresh all of Ely; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, a granddaughter Debbie Buresh, four sisters and three brothers.

Novotny, Mabel M.
Cemetery: Shueyville Cemetery
Mabel Novotny, 95 of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, September 26, 2007 at Silver Pines Nursing and Rehabilitation from a brief illness. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 1, 2007 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids with Rev. William Harnish officiating. Burial will follow in Shueyville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids.
Mabel was born
May 22, 1912 near Oxford, the daughter of Paul and Mary (Shebetka) Swenka. She married Adolph E. Novotny on June 22, 1932 near Ely. Mabel and Adolph celebrated 62 years of marriage together living in the Shueyville area all of their married life. Mabel was a member of the 1st Presbyterian Church and a lifetime member of the Johanna Society near Ely. Mabel enjoyed being a farm wife, gardening, sewing, and raising chickens. She was an excellent cook and baked many kolaches.
Mabel is survived by her sons Howard (Elaine) Novotny of Fairfax and Warren (Kathy) Novotny of Cedar Rapids; two granddaughters: Kim Novotny of Cedar Rapids and Heidi (Bart) Stiffler of Anamosa and great-grandson Brady; sisters Emily (Norbert) Wagner of Iowa City, Leona Evans of Coralville, and Marie Just of Cedar Rapids; brother Edward Swenka of Cedar Rapids; and sister-in-law Helen Swenka of North Liberty and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Adolph on March 26, 1994; her sister Elsie Tomash; and her brothers William Swenka, Clarence Swenka, and Kenneth Swenka.

Novy, Tillie Mae
Cemetery: Czech National Cemetery
Tillie Mae Novy, 92 formerly of Swisher, died Thursday, October 4, 2007 at Heritage Nursing and Rehab Center from a lengthy illness with her family by her side. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids with Rev. Tom Carver presiding. Burial to follow in Czech National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids.
Tillie was born
May 30, 1915 in Fairfax the daughter of Frank and Agnes Pliska Rohlena. Tillie worked for Friendly Foods and the US Bank in Czech Village where she met Joe. She married Joe Novy on April 14, 1949 at Hus Memorial Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids. Joe and Tillie farmed for many years together in the North Liberty area. Tillie was very active in her community. She served and delivered many congregate meals, and was a local historian of the Swisher and surrounding areas. She submitted many articles to the Solon Economist on Swisher life. Tillie was a member of the Birthday Club, the Swisher Socialites, and was a 50 year member of the WFLA Lodge 400.. Tillie enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She also had been involved in many of the Especially 4 You Walks.
Tillie is survived by a daughter Mary Ann (Leonard) Verdeck; two granddaughters Karrie (Lance) Goodall and Olivia Blackmer (Nathan Deburn); great-grandchildren Hunter, Zachary, Haylee and Fiona; a sister in law Alice Rohlena all of Cedar Rapids.
Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband Joe who died December 14, 1988, two brothers Frank and Joe.

Smejkal, Richard Vernon

Richard Vernon Smejkal, 89 of Cedar Rapids, died Monday October 8, 2007 at West Ridge Care Center from a lengthy illness. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 12, 2007 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids with Rev. Glenn Hunt, where full military will be conducted by the VFW Post 788. Burial to follow in Czech National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids.
Richard was born
July 21, 1918 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Frank and Mary Hillmer Smejkal. He married Velma Skalsky on July 21, 1947 in the Little Brown Church in the Vale. Richard was a member of the VFW Post 788. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling, and the outdoors.
Richard is survived by his son Richard (Sylvia) Smejkal of Paradise, CA; his step-grandson Jeffrey Hodsdon; step-great-grandchildren Ashley Reynolds and Aniya Reynolds all of Roseville, CA; sister Catherine Stroleny of Swisher and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Velma; brothers Leo, Leonard, Frank, and Lumir; and his step-grandson Charles Hodsdon.

Tesar, Richard Lee

Richard Lee Tesar, 59 of Mechanicsville, died Wednesday, October 17, 2007 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha after a courageous battle with cancer. Services will be 12 p.m. Monday, October 22, 2007 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids. Burial to follow in Czech National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time Monday at the chapel.
Richard was born
January 17, 1948 in Iowa City, the son of Louis and Gladys Doskocil Tesar. Richard loved the outdoors, fishing and spending time with his cats Rosie and Lady.
Richard is survived by his daughters Donna Williams and Dorothy DelValle; grandchildren Brendon and Cynric; his mother Gladys Tesar; sister Marie Theisen; and brothers James (Delores) Tesar and Donald (Gloria) Tesar.
He was preceded in death by his father, Louis.
Gray, Delores A.
Delores Gray, 74 passed away Wednesday, October 31, 2007 from Pulmonary Fibrosis at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. She was cremated and by her request there will be no services. Brosh Chapel, Cedar Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include her loving husband and caregiver Charles R. Gray; a son Michael (Amy) Gray; a daughter Sally (Jeff) Rundel; four grandchildren Morgan (Nathan) Norton, Nicholas Gray, Joshua Rundel, and Troy Rundel; two great grandchildren Christian and Olivia Norton. She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters.
Urbanek, Donald Frank

Donald F. Urbanek, 71, of Rural Blue River, Wisconsin, formerly of Solon, passed away Saturday, November 10, 2007 at his home following a courageous battle with cancer. A Prayer Service will be 1 p.m. Friday, November 16, 2007 at Brosh Chapel in Solon with Pastor Scott Meador presiding. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 11 a.m. until prayer service at Brosh Chapel in Solon.
Donald was born
on November 17, 1935 in Solon, the son of Frank and Helen(Hunter) Urbanek. Donald was a beef and horse rancher all of his life.
Donald is survived by his wife Marian Urbanek of Blue River; two sons C.J.(Sarah) Urbanek of Wynnewood, Oklahoma and Mike(Martha) Urbanek of Blue River, his grandchildren: Calvin Tyler Urbanek, Tracie Aker, Ashley Urbanek, and Jack Urbanek; two great grandchildren: Elizabeth and Cole; and a sister Trula(James) McDonald.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Bob, a sister Elizabeth, a son Milton and a daughter Dawn.
A Prayer Service will be held Thursday, November 15, 2007 at 7:00 PM at Beeman-Patchak Funeral Home in Boscobel, Wisconsin with Pastor Stan Pegram officiating.

Edna E. Olson, 95, of the Great River Care Center, McGregor, formerly of Elkader, passed away Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at the center. She was born
January 15, 1909, in Elgin to Adolph and Lydia (Christen) Hanson. She was united in marriage to Ira R. Olson on April 5, 1933, in Elgin. One child was born
to this union, LaVonda M Kohnen Edna and her husband farmed until his death. In March of 1977, she moved to Elkader and continued to live there until a hip injury made her move into the Great River Care Center in McGregor in February, 1995. She loved the farm, her dogs, fishing on the Mississippi River and family gatherings. Edna had a wonderful sense of humor and loved playing tricks on people. She will be missed by all that knew her. Edna is survived by her grandchildren, Laura (Steve) Plumley, Greg (Dolly Erickson) Kohnen, Doug (Diane) Kohnen and Karen Kohnen, all of Dubuque, Terrence (Heather Anderson) Kohnen, Dunlap, IL; son-in-law, Richard Kohnen, Dubuque; four great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harry Hanson, Elkader, Aldoph Hanson Jr. Cedar Rapids and a sister, Marge Patton, Evansville, IN. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ira on January 10, 1976; her daughter, LaVonda on December 4, 2003; two brothers, Leo and Aden Hanson and two sisters, Lucille Berse and Lola Elvers. In lieu of flowers, an Edna E. Olson Memorial fund has been established.
