Vavra, Agnes Antonie

Agnes Antonie Vavra, 96, of Ely, died Sunday, January 13, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center following a short illness. Services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday January 18 at First Presbyterian Church near Ely with Rev. Heather Hayes presiding. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, January 17 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids and for an hour prior to services Friday at the church.

Agnes was born icon in Linn County, Iowa on Nov 18, 1911, the daughter of Joseph and Antonie (Rousar) Kriz. She attended Belle Prairie country school and graduated from Washington High School in 1929. She married Arnold C. Vavra on Feb 25, 1936. She was a secretary at the Iowa Masonic Library. Agnes was involved in many church and school activities as she raised her sons. She was a member of the Johanna Society, the United Presbyterian Women, the Ely Friendship Club, and the Ely Library Board. She was an elder at the First Presbyterian Church near Ely, and the first Librarian at the Ely Library.

Agnes is survived by her sons, Thomas, Robert (Betty), William (Marian), grandchildren Matthew (Sarah), Andrea (Mathias), Nicholas, and Christina, brother-in-law Charles (Irene), and nephews and nieces.

Agnes was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sisters Anna, Lydia, Mary, Emma, and her brothers Joseph, Charles and George.

Memorials may be directed in her name to the First Presbyterian Church near Ely.

Otto, Albert L.

Cemetery: Mount Calvary Cemetery

Albert L. Otto, 91 of Cedar Rapids died Monday, January 21, 2008 at West Ridge Care Center. A memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 25, 2008 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids. Inurnment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Albert was born icon September 20, 1916 in Aurora, Nebraska, the son of Homer N. and Gail M. Junkin Otto. Albert graduated from Aurora High School and attended Northwestern University. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, the Moose Lodge, the Wisconsin Association for Certified Public Accountants, and the North American Hunting Club. Albert enjoyed planting trees on Arbor Day at local schools and loved hunting and fishing.

Albert is survived by his children: Ruth Russell of Shawano, WI, Ken (Arlene) Otto of Cedar Rapids, IA, Craig (Helen) Otto of Fairfax, VA, and Mary (Peter) Andersen of Preston, CT; and one grandchild Derik Cowan. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Glenn Otto, sister Opal Lourene Loetterle, special friend Virginia Randolph.

Memorials may be directed to the Arbor Foundation.

Stancel, Milo F.

Cemetery: Linwood Cemetery

Milo F. Stancel, 91, of Norway, died Monday, February 4, 2008 at Colonial Manor Nursing Home. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids with Rev. William Harnish presiding. Burial will follow in Linwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids.

Milo was born icon February 16, 1916 in Linn County, the son of Joseph and Lottie (Pirkel) Stancel. He married Anna Krofta on January 26, 1948. Milo worked at Amana Refrigeration for 25 years and was a farmer in the Norway, Amana area his entire life.

Milo is survived by his sisters Adeline Volesky, Lottie Yercies, and Evelyn (Bob) Bush; brother George Stancel; nephew Leo Stancel; and niece Irene (Jim) Hutton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Anna in 1967; three brothers Louis, Lumir, and Joseph; and two sisters Alma and Roseanne.

Memorials may be directed to the Cedar Valley Humane Society.

Driscoll, Bernice A.

Cemetery: St. John's Cemetery

Bernice A. Driscoll, 96 of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, February 6, 2008 at Heritage Nursing and Rehab Center. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 11, 2008 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids with Fr. Mark Reasoner presiding. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids.

Bernice was born icon January 29, 1912 in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of John and Mary (Bena) Tucker. She married Vincent Driscoll on November 21, 1931 in Cedar Rapids.

Bernice is survived by her son John Ralph Driscoll of Cedar Rapids; daughter Constance Marie (James D.) Cummins of Dallas; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Vincent in 1969, children: Mary Lou Claus, Patricia Sconyers, and Robert Driscoll; granddaughter Mary Kay Brandt; grandson William Claus; sisters Lillian Rayman, Estella Simitz, and Florence Fiala, and brother Robert Tucker.

Donations may be directed to Activities at Heritage Nursing and Rehab Center: 200 Clive Drive SW, Cedar Rapids, IA 52404.

Cambridge, Arthur B.

Cemetery: Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery

Arthur B. Cambridge died Thursday, February 7, 2008 in Republic, Mo., after a short illness. Services: 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at Brosh Chapel in Solon. Burial will follow in Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery, rural Solon. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at Brosh Chapel in Solon.

Arthur was born icon in Solon on March 1, 1918. He was the son of the late Benjamin and Elli (Kessler) Cambridge.

Art was the graduate of the Solon High School Class of 1936. Shortly after graduation, Art was drafted to the United States Army, where he served proudly until 1946, where he earned a Silver Star for valor in his participation in the fighting at The Battle of the Bulge. During Art’s service, Art found time to join himself in loving matrimony with his school sweetheart, Mayme M. Rushek, on December 16, 1942. Mayme was also of Solon, they enjoyed sixty plus years together.

After Art’s service work, Art worked for John Blaugh’s, Nash Finch and Hawkeye Wholesale the latter for over 25 years, as a food salesman. Art was the co-owner of the Princess Steakhouse and Lounge in Pocahontas. from 1975-1987. He finally retired to Solon, where he helped out at Brosh Chapel then later moving to Kimberling City, Mo., where he stayed for many years.

Art was a lifetime member of the American Legion, VFW and 3rd Armored Division. He was also a longtime member of the Elks Club.

Art will be mostly remembered for his quick and witty sense of humor, never meeting a stranger. Art was a father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend who will be missed.

Survivors include two sons, Arthur E. of Republic, Mo., James C. of Austin, Tx.; six grandchildren, Melissa Sassi of London, England, Jennifer Hazelrigg of Springfield, Mo., Keeley Cambridge of Vail, Co., Marcia Davis and Chris Beckel of Springfield, Mo., and Jeff Garthoff of Kansas City, Ks.; ten great-grandchildren, Zahra, Zahran and Youmna Sassi of London, England, Andrew and Alexis Hazelrigg, Matthew Beckel, Amanda Beat and Jeremy Davis, all of Springfield, Mo., Zachary and Kelsea Garthoff of Kansas City, Ks.; and three nephews, Thomas Sonka of Cedar Rapids, Samuel Sonka of Lexington, Ky. and Steve Sonka of Cherokee.

Art is preceded in death by his parents, his wife a sister and a half brother.

Pennington, Richard

Richard Lee Pennington, 60 of 3815 SW 20th Avenue died Monday, February 11, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center from a brief illness. As per Richard’s wishes there will be no services.

Richard was born icon August 12, 1947 in Burlington, the son of Walter and Barbara Belding Pennington. Richard served for over sixteen years in the Armed Forces. He was a aviation mechanic for many years. He married Rhonda Cunningham on June 12, 2005 in Las Vegas, and they were able to spend five wonderful years together.

Richard is survived by his wife Rhonda; stepdaughter Jennifer Kirby; stepson Walter Cockerham; sister Teresa (Merle) Kuhn; brothers Mike, Gary and Dale Pennington; and nieces.

The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the nurses and doctors at Mercy Hospital for all of their wonderful care.

Everett, Dale

Dale Everett, 79 of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at his home from COPD. Memorial services will be at a later date at the Evangelical Reformed Methodist Church in Conesville, with inurnment following the service.

Dale was born icon February 11, 1929 in Conesville, the son of Irvin and Callie Buser Everett. He married Barbara Fansler August 30, 1947 and they later divorced. He married Marlys Wilt on November 28, 1970 and they were later divorced. On July 21, 2001 he was united in marriage to Marge Bann. Dale owned and operated Dale’s Fruit Market in Cedar Rapids for over 40 years until his retirement. He was also a tomato broker for Arkansas Tomatoes.

Dale is survived by his wife Marge; sons Cameron Everett of Phoenix, Arizona, Steve (Connie) Wright of Centerville, John (Carla) Green; a stepson Ian Bann and stepdaughter Katy(Richard Stewart) Bann all of Cedar Rapids; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild; brothers Leslie(Lois) Everett of Winfield and Fred(Linda) Everett of Conesville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Ed Everett, a sister Helen Everett Gartzke, and sons William, Michael, Chad and Eugene Everett.

Memorials may be directed to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy.
