Bartling Jr., Sgt. Donald Jack

Cemetery: Rock Island National Cemetery

Sgt. Donald Jack Bartling Jr., 26 of Coralville, passed away Sunday, April 6, 2008. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 10, 2008 at Brosh Chapel in Solon with Rev. Scott Meador presiding. Full military rites will be conducted by the Stinocher American Legion Post 460 following services. Burial will be 2:30 p.m. at Rock Island National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Brosh Chapel in Solon, located at 100 South Cedar Street.

Don was born icon November 21, 1981 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Donald and Celecia Hupp Bartling Sr. He attended Tipton High School. Following graduation he attended Kirkwood College and received his Associates Degree in Criminal Justice. He continued his education at the University of Iowa. Don served as Ambulance Platoon Squad Leader in Operation Iraqi Freedom with the 109th HSC Med Battalion from February 2003 to April 2004. Don was currently assigned to the 294th Area Support Medical Company in Des Moines. He enjoyed hunting, fishing being outdoors, playing video games and spending time with his friends.

Don is survived by his father Don (Brenda) Bartling of Solon; his mother Celecia Hupp of Cedar Rapids; siblings Summer (Brandon) Richard of Cedar Rapids, Justin Bartling, and Teah Bartling of Solon; his long-time girlfriend Cara DeBolt of Coralville, his son Trent Bartling; step-grandparents Mary Lou and Richard Kindler; aunts Sue (Joe) VanThournout, Kathy (Dennis) Kelly, Georgia (Larry) Whapples, Debbie Bartling, Ginny Spicer; uncle Dean (Peg) Bartling; step-uncles John Kindler, and Richard Kindler, and step-aunt Geraldine Kindler.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Smith, Gordon P.

Cemetery: Linwood Cemetery

Gordon P. Smith, 72 of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, April 13, 2008 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. Service will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids. Burial will follow in Linwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids.

Gordon was born icon May 11, 1935 in Delaware County, the son of Cecil and Blanche (Beitz) Smith. He graduated from Lamont High School in 1953. Gordon married Betty Vozenilek on June 11, 1960 in Rock Island, IL. He was employed by Farmstead Foods for 27 years, retiring in 1990. He was an avid bingo player and he enjoyed watching the Cubs.

Gordon is survived by his wife Betty; his children: Brian Smith, David Smith, and Scott (Dani) Smith all of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren: Ryan, Cori, Amy, Megan, and Justin; and three great grandchildren: Nattasha, Annabelle, and Navaida.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Stagg, Mary Elaine

Cemetery: Anderson Cemetery

Mary Elaine Stagg, 69 of Walford, died Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, April 21, 2008 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fairfax with Fr. Phil Thompson presiding. Burial will follow in Anderson Cemetery in rural Swisher. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids. As per Mary’s wishes her casket will be closed at all times.

Mary was born icon May 29, 1938 in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of William and Helen (Schulte) Rotter. She married Donald Stagg on June 5, 1957 in Walford.

Mary is survived by her husband Donald; her children Michael A. (Kelly) Stagg of Swisher, and Angela (Kurt) Tjelmeland of Cedar Rapids; her mother Helen Rotter of Walford; five grandchildren: Mindy (Chris) Graeter, Debra Horak, Michelle Horak, Tyler Tjelmeland, and Kara Tjelmeland; one great-grandchild Lexa Graeter; sisters Shirley Raim-Smith of Cedar Rapids, Donna (Terry) Zabokrtsky of Walford, and Phyllis (Bernard) Marak of Swisher; and her brother James (Linda) Rotter of Walford. She was preceded in death by her father William.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the nursing and doctor staff at Mercy Medical Center for their wonderful care.

Brownfield, Elsie

Cemetery: Spring Grove Cemetery ~ rural Covington

Elsie Brownfield, 89 of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, April 17, 2008 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. Memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 19, 2008 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids. Inurnment will follow in Spring Grove Cemetery in rural Covington. Visitation will be an hour prior to services Saturday at Brosh Chapel.

Elsie was born icon December 29, 1918 in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands, the daughter of Loui and Clara (Bosnar) Hiemstra. She married Leroy Brownfield. Elsie enjoyed gardening and being outdoors. She loved her dogs and playing cards.

Elsie is survived by her daughter Harriett Wiggins; granddaughters Bridgette Brownfield and Tricia Inman; grandsons Brian Brownfield, Todd Beyer, and Toby Beyer; seven great-grandchildren: Marisa, Eric, Ryan, Tristan, Todd II, Tiana, and Tiara; sister Wilma Vernooy; daughter-in-law Rose Regan; and a special friend, Harry Birch.

She was preceded in death by her husband Leroy on August 16, 2007, and her sons Mitchell Brownfield and Virgil Brownfield.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Kuntz, Ivan Lee

Cemetery: Mt. Vernon Cemetery

Ivan Lee Kuntz, 50 of Martelle died Sunday, April 27 in his home from a sudden illness. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Mt. Vernon, with burial following in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, and for an hour prior to services Wednesday at the church. Brosh Chapel in Solon is in charge of arrangements.

Ivan was born icon October 3, 1957 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Dean and Marie (Zinkula) Kuntz. He married Joy Koehn on June 21, 1980 in the Mt. Vernon Methodist Church. Ivan farmed his entire life in the Martelle Community and he served the Clarence Co-Op from 1990 until 1996. He enjoyed skiing, the outdoors, Survivor night, rodeo roundup, and games of any kind. Over the years Ivan loved watching his kids participate in all school activities. He was an avid Mustang fan. Ivan was a member of the all-conference chain gang. Family, friends, and farming were his passions.

Ivan is survived by his wife Joy; his children: Kacey (friend Andy), Kyle (Fiance Taryn), and Kaiden; his mother Marie Kuntz; sisters Jean (Bob) Bowman, and Irene (John) Cherveny; brothers Glen (Jennifer) Kuntz, and Roy (Barb) Kuntz; father and mother-in-law Dick and Ruth Koehn; brothers-in-law Jay (Theresa) Koehn, James Koehn, and Joby (Shawn) Koehn; sisters-in-law Jeri Koehn, and Janee (Jamie) Brendes; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father Dean Kuntz.

A memorial fund has been established in his name at 3778 230th Avenue, Martelle, IA 52305.

Swenka, Marie E.

Cemetery: Oakland Cemetery ~ Iowa City

Marie E. Swenka, 90 of North Liberty died Friday, May 9, 2008 at Lantern Park Nursing Home. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at First Presbyterian Church, near Ely. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. in Oakland Cemetery, Iowa City. Visitation will be from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at Brosh Chapel in Solon, and for an hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.

Marie was born icon March 8, 1918 in rural Solon, the daughter of Frank and Mary (Yuza) Slaby. She married George J. Swenka on January 8, 1942 at the First Presbyterian Church, near Ely by the Reverend Ludvik Burian. George and Marie established their home on the family farm west of North Liberty in 1942 where she and her husband George farmed for 55 years. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her family was the joy of her life. Marie enjoyed participating in the ladies neighborhood birthday club for many years. During her lifetime she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church near Ely, and the Hus Memorial Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids.

Marie is survived by her husband George; two daughters Jean (Kenneth) Kintzel of La Crosse, Wisconsin and Beverly (Dick) Snakenberg of Tiffin; son George Vernon (Mary Kay) Swenka of Tiffin; sister-in-law Esther Viksten of Iowa City; eight grandchildren: Kimberly (Manny) Lindo of Harvard, Mass, Kelly (Eric) Manahan of Dalton, Georgia, Kristen (Joe) Kopczynski of Naperville, Illinois, George Stephen (Amanda) Swenka of Tiffin, Suzy (Thad) Barker of North Liberty, Gina (Nathan) Holler of Denver, Colorado, Mark (Erica) Zimmerman of Amana, and Shaun Zimmerman of Iowa City; four great-grandsons: George Jacob and Will Swenka of Tiffin, Brandon Barker of North Liberty, and Kyle Kopczynski of Naperville, Illinois; eight great-granddaughters: Kaylie Barker, Haidyn Barker and Kira Barker of North Liberty, Elsie Kopczynski of Naperville, Illinois, Paige and Lindsay Manahan of Dalton, Georgia, Olivia Lindo of Harvard, Mass., and Lydia Holler of Denver, Colorado.

She was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Mary Slaby; sisters: Bessie Hoffman, Tillie Meade, and Helen Gerhold; and a brother Theodore Slaby.

Memorials may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church, near Ely and/or the Hus Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Name: Hird, Sharian Lee

Cemetery: Evergreen Cemetery ~ Vinton

Sharian Lee Hird, 68 of Marion, died Wednesday, May 14, 2008 at her home after a short illness. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 17, 2008 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Burial will be 1 p.m. Saturday in Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, where there will be a 6:30 p.m. vigil. Visitation will also be an hour prior to services Saturday at the church.

Sharian was born icon October 12, 1939 in Oelwein, the daughter of Floyd Eldon and Beulah (Starr) Grapes. She married Ronald James Hird on December 31, 1962 in Cedar Rapids. Sharian worked at Iowa National Mutual Insurance, Hunter Specialties until 2005, and she provided in home daycare for over 20 years. She enjoyed camping, fishing, reading, and being around her family and friends.

Sharian is survived by her husband Ron; children Craig Hird, Lisa Hird, and Steve (Crystal) Hird all of Cedar Rapids; three grandchildren: Dylan, Aubrie, and Cain; and sisters Beverly James of Scottsdale, AZ, Barbara Smith of Oelwein, and Janet Pech of Winthrop.

She was preceded in death by her parents Eldon and Beulah Grapes and twin daughters Annette and Sheila.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Luke’s Hospice.
