Broulik, Leonard Wesley

Cemetery: Lisbon

Leonard W. Broulik, 87 of Mt. Vernon, died Friday, November 14, 2008 at Hallmark Care Center in Mt. Vernon. Funeral Mass will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Burial to follow in Lisbon Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at Brosh Chapel in Solon, where there will be a 6 p.m. vigil. Visitation will also be an hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.

Leonard was born icon May 11, 1921 in rural Johnson County, the son of Emil and Theresa Mallie Broulik. He attended Pleasant Hill Country School and graduated from Mt. Vernon High School at the age of 17. In the early years he farmed his grandmother’s farm with his dad in the Ivanhoe area. In the early 40’s he moved south of the Mt. Vernon area to continue farming. He married Geraldine Hajek on January 3, 1953 in Ely. He loved to farm, especially with his boys, also being outdoors and taking care of the animals. He enjoyed cards, playing the accordion, listening to Czech music especially polkas. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. He will be greatly missed by all.

Leonard is survived by his wife Geraldine; sons Robert (Anna) Broulik of Lisbon and Dan Broulik of Mt. Vernon; daughters Sharon (Keith) Kadlec of Hiawatha, Nancy (Kerry) Vincent of Ely, Teresa (Steve) Weets of Mechanicsville; a daughter in law Julie Broulik of Lisbon; grandchildren Michelle, Sara, Stephanie, Abby, Luke, Jacob, Jenna Alan “A.J.”, Amber, Joey, Sally, Stacey, and Johnny; great-grandchildren Spencer, Taylor, Shauna, Caleb, and Logan; step-grandchildren Catie, Matt and Jack; sister in law Connie Broulik of Mechanicsville. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son John on March 8, 2008, and a brother Richard Broulik.

A memorial fund has been established in his name.

Knoke, Kimberly

Cemetery: Ridgewood Cemetery

Kimberly “Kimi” Knoke, 30 of Springville, died Wednesday, November 26, 2008 from complications of an automobile accident. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 1, 2008 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, temporarily located at 3100 F Avenue NW, with burial to follow in Ridgewood Cemetery in North Liberty. Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, November 30 at Brosh Chapel.

Kimi was born icon August 2, 1978 in Iowa City, Kerry and Brenda Stiles Simmons. She married Jerry Knoke on September 30, 1999 in Cedar Rapids.

Kimi is survived by her husband, Jerry; daughters Samantha age 10, Brooke age 7, Rebecca age 6 and Elizabeth Knoke age 3, all of Springville, mother Brenda Simmons of Marion, father Kerry Simmons of Cedar Rapids, three brothers Kelly Simmons of Cedar Rapids, Steve Simmons (Wendy Hoppenworth) of Cedar Rapids, and David Simmons of Cedar Rapids; maternal grandmother Yvonne (Chester) Winegart of Florida; paternal grandmother Joan Simmons of Missouri, and mother in law Dorothy Knoke of Marion, sister in laws Rae Lynn (Dennis)McMann of Cedar Rapids, Chris Blawkhawk of Green Bay, Wisconsin, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Kimi is preceded in death by her daughter, Jessi Lanee Knoke age 7, who died on December 15, 2000, paternal grandfather Robert Simmons, maternal grandfather Calvin Stiles, and an aunt Kathy Cottrell and an uncle Michael Stiles.

Memorials may be directed to the family at 30 27th Street NW, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52405.

Siders, Gene LeRoy

Gene LeRoy Siders, 67 of Marion, died Friday, December 5, 2008 at St. Luke’s Hospital from a brief illness. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, temporarily located at 3100 F Avenue NW. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids.

Gene was born icon December 15, 1940 in Vinton, the son of Harold and Caroline (Brosh) Siders. He married Susan Huey on May 2, 1964 in Marion. Gene was an active school bus driver for Linn-Mar and Marion Independent School District after his retirement.

Gene is survived by his wife of 44 years, Susan; his son, Christopher Siders; nephew, Daniel Siders; niece, Laura Tucker; and his mother-in-law, Phyllys Huey.

Gene is preceded in death by his parents; his brother Ronald Siders; and his sister-in-law Marian Siders.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Boyce, Shirley

Cemetery: Oakland ~ Solon

Shirley Fae Boyce, 87, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, December 7, 2008 at Methwick Retirement Community. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, December 14, 2008 at People’s Church Unitarian Universalist. Inurnment will follow in Oakland Cemetery in Solon. Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids is in charge of arrangements.

Shirley was born icon January 10, 1921 in Mt. Vernon, the daughter of Arlo and Laura (Goudy) Sanderson. She married John Boyce in September of 1944. Shirley worked as an editor at Buildings Magazine for Stamats Publishing Company for over 22 years. She then worked as a publicist at the University of Iowa Press for 10 years until her retirement. She was an active volunteer at the Solon Elementary School, the Solon Community Library, and Woodlands at Methwick. She was a member of the United Nations Association, and the People’s Church Unitarian Universalist. Shirley loved to read, cook and fish, not necessarily in that order. Witty and literate, Shirley turned an elegant phrase and an equally brilliant pun.

Shirley is survived by her children, Brooke Boyce Thompson of Bainbridge Island, Washington and Kurth Boyce of Coralville; grandchildren, Joshua Boyce, Cameron Boyce, Danan Thompson, and Bryn (David) Lashmet; great-grandchildren, Sabrina and Lily Lashmet; brothers, Donald Sanderson of Torrey, Utah, and Ric Sanderson of Mililani, Hawaii; and a special friend, Tom Moss of Cedar Rapids.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband John on October 19, 1992; and her brother, Bob Sanderson.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Mercy Hospital.

Osborn, Elizabeth M.

Cemetery: Dunkard Cemetery

Elizabeth “Liz” May Osborn, 65 of Toddville, died Thursday, December 11, 2008 at St. Luke’s Hospital. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Monday, December 15, 2008 at Oakland Church of the Nazarene, with Pastor James Leatherwood presiding. Inurnment will follow at Dunkard Cemetery in Midway. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time Monday at the church. Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids is in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth was born icon July 26, 1943 in Davenport, the daughter of James John and Frances Rose Darling Green. She graduated from Washington High School. Elizabeth married Jack Osborn on November 5, 1962 in Illinois. She worked in the fileroom at Norwood Souvenir for many years until her retirement. She loved to travel, gamble, decorate for the seasons and spending time with her friends and family.

Elizabeth is survived by her husband, Jack of Toddville; Michelle Osborn of Cedar Rapids and Scott (Kim) Osborn of Center Point; two grandchildren Austin Nelson and Sammijo Osborn; her mother Frances Green of Cedar Rapids; sisters Sandy (Mark Schoneman) Siechert of Center Point and Fran Stone of Cedar Rapids and a brother John (Carla) Green of Cedar Rapids.

She was preceded in death by her father James, a brother Jim Green, and a niece Sarah Stone.

In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established at Metco Credit Union in her name.

Moessner, Vivian Jean

Cemetery: Czech National Cemetery ~ Cedar Rapids

Vivian Jean (Cerveny) Moessner, 74, of 3005 H Street, Middle Amana, passed from this life peacefully on December 13 at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, on December 17 at Clover Ridge United Methodist Church in Walford. Burial will follow in Czech National Cemetery in Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be from 3:30 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, at Clover Ridge United Methodist Church in Walford. Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids is in charge of arrangements. A wonderful and loving wife, mother, grandmother and cherished friend, Vivian touched the lives of everyone who knew her. She will be deeply missed.

Vivian was born icon April 10, 1934 in rural Johnson County, the daughter of Frank and Lydia (Dubishar) Cerveny. She later moved to Walford with her parents and was a 1951 graduate of Walford High School. She married her husband of 55 years, Reynold Moessner on October 8, 1953 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. She had been employed by Souvenir Lead Pencil in Cedar Rapids as a secretary and receptionist and also was briefly employed at Amana Refrigeration, Inc. and the Amana Furniture Shop. In 1966, she earned her Iowa Real Estate License and began her 33-year career as a Realtor, retiring in 1998. In 1974 she was among the first women to be accepted into the Cedar Rapids Board of Realtors. She was well loved by her colleagues and the many customers that she so caringly served during her career.

She enjoyed traveling and particularly cherished the vacations she took with her family and friends in Florida and Aruba during the winter months. Vivian loved music and loved to dance whenever she had the opportunity. She and Reynold were members of the Merimyx Dance Club for several years. Most of all, she had a passion for cooking and entertaining for her family and friends. While she could expertly prepare any and all kinds of foods, her favorite and specialty was the good old-fashioned “bohemie cooking” that she grew up with. Word of her delicious meals spread and she catered several events, receptions, parties and banquets including several for the University of Iowa Theatre Department. She also loved flowers and gardening and sharing laughter and good times with those close to her. With her beautiful smile, sweet spirit and warm heart, Vivian was a loving, caring, understanding and fun person whose generosity knew no bounds.

She is survived by her husband; her daughter, Judith Moessner Lambert and son-in-law Roger Lambert of Solon; her grandson Matthew Moessner and great granddaughter, Liliana Moessner of Iowa City; her brother Virgil Cerveny and his wife Arlene Cerveny of Cedar Rapids, and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and son Allen, who passed away in 1995.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the oncologists, doctors, nurses and hospice staff at Mercy Medical Center.

Lekin, Steve L.

Steven L. Lekin, 47 of 1224 K Street SW, died Sunday, December 7, 2008 unexpectedly, but peacefully in his sleep, from coronary artery disease. A celebration of life service will be 7 p.m. Thursday, December 11, 2008 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, temporarily located at 3100 F Avenue NW. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Brosh Chapel.

Steve was born icon October 4, 1961 in Cedar Rapids and received his education in the Cedar Rapids School District. Steve’s lifelong goal was to cook the best food ever for family, friends and patrons wherever he worked. He cooked in the Czech Village area for many years. He was an avid Hawkeye and Cubs fan. He was employed at Chappy’s Safari Lounge until the flood of 2008, and was recently cooking for the residents at Higley Mansion Care Center until his death. He was a very loving owner of his pets, Eddie, Shelby, Jake, and Gabby.

Steve is survived by his soulmate, Christine Gallagher and her loving family.

He was preceded in death by his father, Harry, his mother Betty, and two brothers Gary and Kenny.

A memorial fund has been established in his name.
