Kubichek, Lawrence
Cemetery: Roger's Grove Cemetery
Lawrence “Bud” James Kubichek, 84 of 1263 White Oak Avenue, Lisbon, died Thursday, December 18, 2008 at his home after a lengthy illness. A celebration of life will be held at a later date at the Sutliff Store with inurnment in Roger’s Grove Cemetery.
Bud was born
March 19, 1927 in Blairstown, Iowa, the son of James and Bessie Kubichek. He attended school in Blairstown. He married Norma Bartosh on June 6, 1945 at St. Peters and Paul Church.
He served in the United States Air Force CIC from 1946 – 1948.
Bud started Kubichek Plumbing and Heating in Solon, in 1952. He retired in 1985. He was an avid fisherman who enjoyed daily coffee at the Sutliff Store, hunting, playing cards, bingo, casino visits, and watching the birds (and squirrels) at his many bird feeders. They resided in the home he built in 2002.
Bud is survived by his wife, Norma; son, Keith (Janet) of Winnemucca, Nevada; daughter, Kristy (Jim) Nichols of Iowa City; grandchildren, Stephanie Nichols and Kimberly Nichols of North Liberty, K.C. Kubichek of Winnemucca, Nevada; four step grandchildren and great grandchildren; one brother, Charles (Evelyn) Kubichek of Blairstown; eight nephews and three nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Constance Irene; one brother, Clarence (Katherine) Kubichek; and sister, Faye (Skippy) Kubichek.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Solon Fire Department, Lisbon Fire Department, the Solon American Legion, and the Sutliff Bridge fund.
Pitlik, William F.
Cemetery: Mt. Calvary Cemetery
William F.“Bill” Pitlik, 79, of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, December 20, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 23, 2008 at All Saints Catholic Church with Fr. David O’Connor presiding. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, December 22 from 4 to 7 p.m. with a 4 p.m rosary and a 7 p.m. parish vigil at All Saints Catholic Church. Visitation will also be an hour prior to services Tuesday at the church. Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids is in charge of arrangements.
Bill was born
May 22, 1929 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Dr. C.C. and Melvina Tehel Pitlik. He married Mary Kathryn “Kay” Cleary on August 9, 1952 in Rutland, Illiniois. Bill graduated from the University of Iowa in 1953 with a degree in Business. He served in the US Army during the Korean Confict from 1953 until 1955. Bill was the co-owner and president of Pepsi Cola Bottling Company of Cedar Rapids until his retirement on July 19, 1995. He was a member of the Linn County I-Club, Cedar Rapids Country Club, Indian Creek Country Club, ATO Fraternity and a honorary board member of Camp Courageous. He was inducted in the Washington High School Hall of Fame. His philanthropy extended to the University of Iowa Athletic Scholarship Program, Mercy Medical Center, the Community Health Clinic, the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice Home, and Camp Courgeous of Iowa.
Bill is survived by his wife Kay; children Janet (Arthur) Erdall of Edina, Minnesota, James (Jana) Pitlik of Rock Island, Illinois, Diane Pitlik of Cedar Rapids, Richard (Rita) Kells-Pitlik of Mt. Vernon, Linda Pitlik of Cedar Rapids, Carol Ekstrand of Cedar Rapids, Nancy Pitlik of Cedar Rapids, Tom (Susan) Pitlik of Mt. Vernon; grandchildren Jeff (Tiffany), Brad (Lizzy) and Katie Erdall, Drew and Tyler Pitlik, Kaitlyn Pitlik, Hollie Pitlik, Hannah and Logan Ekstrand, Hillary, Heather, Kayla, and Philip Waddell, Brandt, Reece and Sean Pitlik, and a great-grandchild Ben Erdall.
He was preceded in death by his parents Dr. C.C. and Melvina Pitlik.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Camp Courgaeous and or All Saints Catholic Church.
Machacek, Milo "Mike"
Cemetery: Oakland Cemetery
Milo "Mike" Machacek, 78 of Solon, died Sunday, December 21, 2008 at St. Luke’s Hospital from a lengthy illness. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 27 at Brosh Chapel in Solon with Rev. Tom Carver presiding. Burial to follow in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Brosh Chapel in Solon.
Mike was born
November 21, 1930 near Cou Falls in rural Johnson County, the son of Frank and Agnes Sedlacek Machacek. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He married Annelee “Annie” Velky on March 29, 1958 at the Shueyville United Methodist Church. He farmed nearly all his life in the Ely area.
Mike is survived by his wife Annie, a daughter Laurie (Tim) Broghammer of Solon, a son Mickey (Deb) Machacek of Solon, 2 grandchildren Annelyn and Michael Broghammer.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a stepfather Robert Johnston and a twin brother Leo Machacek.

Becicka, Joseph Wesley
Cemetery: Czech National Cemetery ~ Cedar Rapids
Joseph Wesley Becicka, 90 of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, December 26, 2008 at Heritage Nursing and Rehab after a lengthy illness. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, temporarily located at 3100 F Avenue NW. Burial to follow in Czech National Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids.
Joe was born
September 5, 1918 on a farm near Ely, the son of Joseph and Anna Kristof Becicka. He married Pauline Mackey on December 4, 1942 at St. Patrick’s Rectory. He served in the United States Navy from 1937 until 1946. He was a boiler technician for Alliant Energy for over 30 years until his retirement in 1981. Joe was a member of the Solon American Legion, the VFW Post, the Fleet Reserves as well as the Eagles.
Joe is survived by his wife, Pauline; his children, Bonnie Sherman, Brenda (Terry) Braaten, and Al (Jodi) Becicka; six grandchildren: Jessica Sherman and Michelle (Mark) Campbell, Brad Plagmann, Morgan, Rilea, and Karigan Becicka;
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Charles, George, Edwin, Lumir, and Frank; sisters Emma Hurych and Agnes Hall; and a special nephew, Carl Davis.

Kacere, Joseph
Cemetery: St. George Cemetery
Joseph S. Kacere, 93 of Mesa, Arizona formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, January 7 at Chula Vista Care Center in Mesa from a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, January 16, 2009 at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church with Fr. Fred Shaheen presiding. Burial to follow in St. George Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until service time.
Joe was born
June 6, 1915 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Samuel and Anna George Kacere. Joe served in the United States Army during World War II. Joe was a professional sign painter, owning his own business for many years in Cedar Rapids.
Joe is survived by his family Lillian M. Haddy, Mary Jean Kacere, Tom Kacere, Richard L. Haddy and Margaret Ann Haddy. He is preceded in death by his parents and a sister Frances Habib.
The family will be making a donation in his name to the St. George Cemetery Fund.
Skala, Robert Milo
Cemetery: Anderson Cemetery ~ Swisher
Robert M. Skala, 83 of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, January 8, 2009 at Heritage Nursing and Rehab Center. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, temporarily located at 3100 F Avenue NW, with burial to follow in Anderson Cemetery in Swisher. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time.
Robert was born
January 9, 1925 in Linn County, the son of George and Elizabeth Detert Skala. Robert started school in Western and then attended four years at Woodward. His early adult life he spent on the farm. He lived in Swisher for over eight years and then moved to Cedar Rapids in 1974. He attended Handicap Systems, now Options for fourteen years. Robert enjoyed traveling, listening to Czech music, dancing, and playing bingo. He was a member of the Western Fraternal, Czech Heritage, Fairfax Senior Citizens, Federation Czech Group, WFLA Lodge 13 as well as the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library.
Robert is survived by his mother Elizabeth Detert Skala Becicka of Cedar Rapids; a sister in law Linda Skala of Cedar Rapids, a niece Cheryl and Bryan Hadley of Marion, a nephew Scott and Monique Skala of Ft. Bragg, North Carolina as well as his great nieces Sarah and Lauren Hadley.
He was preceded in death by his father George Skala; a brother Marvin Skala on July 5, 2008; and a stepfather George Becicka.

Koss, Dayton James
Cemetery: St. Mary's Cemetery
Dayton James Koss, 8 month old son of Davie Meredith and Dustin Koss, died Saturday, January 17 in his home from a sudden illness. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Brosh Chapel in Solon with Fr. David Wilkening presiding. Burial to follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Brosh Chapel in Solon.
Dayton was born
April 23, 2008 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Dayton loved people. He never cried and was always happy. He had a sparkle in his eye and always a big loving smile on his face. Dayton played and loved to be with his family.
Survived by his parents, a sister Kirsten Wilson of Cedar Rapids; maternal grandmother Kathleen Fuller of Marion; paternal grandparents James and Linda Koss of Solon; maternal great-grandmother Shirley Wilson of Springfield, Missouri; paternal great-grandmother Elizabeth Koss of Solon; aunts Lee Ann Tran, April (Jerry) Snyder, Linda (Brian) Bourgeois, Janet (Bud) Cavanah, Susan (Ron) Tremblay, Tiffany Koss, Jody (Jamie) Miller, Jamie (Matt) Smith; uncle Jim (Brenda) Koss as well as numerous loving cousins.
Preceded in death by his maternal grandfather David Meredith.
