Bowersox, Wilma Mae
Cemetery: Shueyville Cemetery
Wilma Mae (Smahel) Bowersox, 93 of Swisher, died Thursday, February 12, 2009 at Higley Mansion Care Center. Services will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, February 16, 2009 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, temporarily located at 3100 F Avenue NW. Visitation will be from 2 until 5 p.m. Sunday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids. Burial will follow in Shueyville Cemetery.
Wilma was born
July 11, 1915 in Johnson County, the daughter of Emil and Libbie (Becicka) Smahel. She graduated from Shueyville High School. She married Robert Bowersox in Cedar Rapids on October 14, 1939.
Wilma lived in the Swisher area all of her single and married life. They built a house in Swisher in 1979 but continued farming until 1987. She loved her family, adored her grand children, enjoyed cooking for them and listening to their good times and giving them advice with their problems. Wilma loved to do crossword puzzles, crochet, knit, and tend to her flowers and her house. She liked to be around people, friends, run her own errands and visit on the phone. Wilma always watched the Hawkeye Games on TV. A special thanks to Jackie and Bob for the phone calls every morning since 1999.
Wilma is survived by her son, Michael Bowersox of Swisher; daughter-in-law, Madelyn Bowersox of West Des Moines; grandchildren, Lisa Bowersox of Petoskey, MI, Christopher (Angela) Bowersox of Johnston, Andrea (Troy) Hicks of North Liberty, and Matt (Amy) Bowersox of Chicago, IL; great grandson, Owen Hicks of North Liberty; three sister-in-laws, Ruth Kloubec of West Chicago, IL, Helen Whiting of Waunakee, WI, and Marion Edwards of Williamsburg.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Robert in June 1999; son, Terry in April 1999; brother, Robert and his wife Vlasta; five sister-in-laws and eight brother-in-laws.

Klein, Delmar Dean
Delmar Dean Klein, 76 of Cedar Rapids, passed away Monday, February 23, 2009 at his home after a brief illness. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, February 26, 2009 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, temporarily located at 3100 F Avenue NW.
Del was born
July 18, 1932 in Iowa City, the son of John R. and Iona V. (Ward) Klein. He married Constance M. Wall on July 7, 1956. Del enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, playing cards, and spending time with friends and family.
Del is survived by his wife, Connie; children, Daniel (Sara) Klein of Cedar Rapids, Tracy (Linda) Klein of Central City, Moe Klein (Barb) of Central City, Laura Klein Evans of Golden, Colorado, and Heidi (Will) Lis of Marion; thirteen grandchildren, Kelly, Jeremiah, Robert, Kody, Jason, Travis, Mysti, Taylor, Alex, Julia, Blaze, Sydney, Ella; three great-grandchildren, Tomi, Maquoi, and Dallas; his brothers, Elmer J. (Kathy) Klein, Kenneth (Betty) Klein all of Cedar Rapids, and Robert Klein of Coralville; and his father-in-law, Donald Melton of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son Randolph, infant brother George, and an infant sister Hazel.

Kadlec, Dorothy Jean

Dorothy Jean Kadlec, 88, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at Winslow House Care Center, Marion, due to complications from dementia. Services will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 2, 2009 at Sharon United Methodist Church, 1809 9th Street SW, Cedar Rapids. Burial will follow in Czech National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m., Sunday, at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, temporarily located at 3100 F Avenue NW.
Dorothy was born
July 21, 1920 in Marion, the daughter of Verne and Alice (Law) Pratt. She married Joseph Kadlec on March 24, 1946 in Coggon.
Dorothy is survived by her sons: Jim (Terry) Kadlec of Marion, Larry (Paula) Kadlec of Omaha, Richard (Janet) Kadlec of Cedar Rapids, and Jerald Kadlec of Marion; twelve grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and her brother Robert (Lucile) Pratt of Coggon.
Dot was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Joe on May 2, 2000, and a great granddaughter.

Lawrence, Leslie Wilson
Cemetery: Czech National Cemetery
Leslie Wilson Lawrence, 98, died Saturday, February 28, 2009, in St. Luke's Hospital following a long illness. Memorial services will be 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 4 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, temporarily located at 3100 F Avenue NW, with Rev. Sonda Kirsteatter of Olivet Presbyterian Church. Inurnment will be in Czech National Cemetery at a later date. Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. until service time at Brosh Chapel.
Survivors include his daughter, Donna Jeanne Burian of Iowa City; his son, L. Michael Lawrence and wife Deborah of Cedar Rapids; a niece, Nancy Meyn of Cedar Rapids; a nephew, Thomas Meyn of Bristol, Indiana; a niece, Kathy Poldberg of Cedar Rapids; six grandchildren, Mark Burian, Greg Burian, Kathy Reichelt, Philip Burian, David Lawrence, Gina Holmstedt; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and other loving family members and friends.
Leslie was born
September 1, 1910, the son of William and Gertrude Lawrence, and was a life-long resident of Cedar Rapids. He married Blanche Marie Stolba on June 10, 1935, at Olivet Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids, and was preceded in death by her in 2004 after 69 years of marriage.
Leslie was a gentle, loving, and generous man who lived a life exemplifying his strong faith, and his family was always of highest priority. He was a true sportsman in many ways, enjoying and excelling in fly rod fishing, softball, golf, bowling, and hunting. He earned many awards and trophies over the decades of his sporting years including induction into the Iowa Softball Hall of Fame, one of his proudest moments. His working career was at the Cedar Rapids Gazette as a compositor, until his retirement 36 years ago.
His family is very grateful for the blessing of his wonderful long life. Our Dad was the kindest and most considerate man we've known.

Dostal, Levern Joseph
Cemetery: St. John's Cemetery
Levern Joseph Dostal, 77 of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, March 5, 2009 at his home. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 9, 2009 at St. Ludmila’s Catholic Church. Full military rites will be conducted by the Hanford American Legion Post 5. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, temporarily located at 3100 F Avenue NW, where there will be a 5:30 p.m.Vigil. Visitation will also be an hour prior to services Monday at St. Ludmilas Catholic Church.
Vern was born
March 30, 1931, in Cedar Rapids, the oldest son of Joseph and Adeline (Dlask) Dostal. He was a self proclaimed Tot Lot dropout until his 1949 graduation from Czech Tech (Wilson High). He later attended the University of Iowa. Vern worked at Toman’s Florist and Linn Candy before joining the US Army during the Korean Conflict serving as a Sergeant in the Quarter Master Corps. in Germany. He married Helen Rose Jandl in a civil ceremony on November 28, 1952 and a Catholic Church ceremony on November 29, 1952 both in Worms, Germany. After his honorable discharge, he worked in car sales at Culver Motors and McGrath Pontiac. In 1964 he became co-owner of Dostal Catering Service with his two brothers, until selling the business in 1990. Vern also worked at the Cedar Rapids Airport Shuttle Service for several years. He was a member of the VFW, Elks Club, the Moose Lodge, Knights of Columbus, and Western Fraternal.
Vern is survived by his sons, Mark (Kay) Dostal of Naperville, Illinois, Matthew (Jan) Dostal of Cedar Rapids, Chris (Mary) Dostal of Cedar Rapids, Craig (Sheryl) Dostal of Ely, and Dave (Melissa) Dostal of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, John (Jeanette) Dostal, Jeremy (Lynsey) Dostal, Amy (Brian) Vaughan, Laura Dostal, Todd Dostal, Dan Dostal, Vicki Dostal, and Nolan Dostal; great grandchildren, Derek and Luke Dostal, and Jack Dostal; a sister, JoAnn Smith of Colorado Springs, Colorado; sisters-in-law, Betty Dostal and Carol Dostal both of Cedar Rapids; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Helen Rose; brothers, Duane ‘Dewey’ Dostal, and Ron Dostal.
The family would like to extend a special Thank You to Brandi, Peggy, and Shari of Iowa Hospice, and all of the members of Cedar Rapids Fire Department Station 5.

Helen Blanch Bistricky, 92 of Fairfax, died Saturday, March 14, 2009 at Heritage Nursing and Rehab in Cedar Rapids from a brief illness. Services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 17 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, temporarily located at 3100 F Avenue NW with Reverend Glenn Hunt presiding. Burial will follow in Czech National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids.
Helen was born
December 22, 1916 in Amana, the daughter of John and Helen Ludvicek Divishek. She married Charles Bistricky on March 17, 1936 at Hus Memorial Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids.
Helen is survived by her daughters Helen (Bob) Koutny of Fairfax, Shirley (Gordon) Sevig of Walford and Rose Marie Pudil of Swisher; eight grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.
Helen is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a great-grandson Kyle Fordice and a sister Barbara Ludvicek.

Mabel L. Thiese, 88, of Elkader, IA, died Thursday, April 22, 2004, at Mercy Health Center in Dubuque, IA, following a long illness. She was born
February 15, 1916, in Boardman Township to Herman and Louisa (Polkow) Glawe. She was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church in Clayton Center and later confirmed at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader. Mabel received her education in rural country school in Upper Pony Hollow. She was united in marriage to Ewald Thiese on October 19, 1937. They farmed until 1950. They lived on an acreage until 1963, when they moved to her home in Elkader. She remained there until entering the Elkader Care Center in February of 2003. Mabel worked in the house keeping department of Central Community Hospital for seven years, did altering for Theis Clothing and for many others in the community, and the last twenty years helped her sister at Johnson’s Restaurant. She enjoyed dancing, sewing, playing cards and traveling. Survivors include her brother, Harley (Irma) Glawe, St. Olaf; her sister, Berniece Johnson, Elkader and numerous nieces and nephews. Mabel was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ewald on October 29, 1986, three sisters, Hattie Lembke, Amanda Ihde and Rosina Fette, three brothers, Edwin, Harold and Clarence Glawe and a nephew, Larry Ihde.
