Serbousek, Shirley Mae
Cemetery: Czech National
Shirley Mae Serbousek, 74 of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, July 19, 2009 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. Visitation will be an hour prior to services Wednesday at the church. Private family inurnment will be at Czech National Cemetery.
Shirley was born
May 6, 1935 in Garland, Nebraska, the daughter of Adolph and Frances Nemec Kovar. She married Henry “Hank” Serbousek on August 31, 1953 in Fairfax. Shirley retired from Rockwell Collins in 1992. She enjoyed bowling, reading and playing cards and will be greatly missed by all, especially her family.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Hank; children, Michael J. Serbousek, Charles A. Serbousek, Karen (Mike) Becker all of Cedar Rapids, Julie (Ricky) Schropp of Swisher; 3 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; brothers, Lyle Kovar and LeRoy (Katie) Kovar both of Missouri; and her sister Betty (Dave) Delany of California.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Adolph and Frances Kovar.

Dixie Lee Vandersee, 78 of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, July 23, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center. Services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, July 27 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids temporarily located at 3100 F Avenue NW with Rev. Tom Mattson presiding. Burial will follow in Linwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, July 26 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids temporarily located at 3100 F Avenue NW.
Dixie was born
June 8, 1931 in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of William and Mildred Baird Klouda. She married Marvin “Bud” P. Vandersee on December 27, 1965 in Rock Island. She worked at Turner Microphone and Collins in her early years. She assisted running Vandersee Backhoe alongside her husband Bud for many years. She liked to go fishing, going to garage sales, gardening, camping as well as spending time with her family and her dog Rocky. She will be greatly missed by all.
Dixie is survived by her husband Bud and her children Lisa (Joe) Dumond of Covington Lori (Brad) Kolarik of Marion her stepchildren Robert (Pat) Vandersee of Marion, Judy (Denny) Suchan of Bradyville, Vicki Crinigan of Cedar Rapids, Linda (George) Robinson of Cedar Rapids, Kevin (Chris) Vandersee of Phoenix, Arizona, Mike Vandersee of Cedar Rapids, Terry Vandersee of Cedar Rapids, and Randy (Sally) Vandersee of Springville, her grandchildren Nicole Dumond, Morgan and Abby Kolarik, as well as twenty one step-grandchildren and twenty three step-grandchildren, a sister Bonnie (Bill) Feuss in Lisbon and four nieces, and a step sister Yvonne Pedersen of Marion.
She was preceded in death by her son Terry Randall, her stepmother Gertie Klouda and her parents William and Mildred Klouda.

Shaheen, Rania Sylvia
Cemetery: St. George Cemetery
Rania Shaheen, 27 of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, July 24 at the University Hospitals and Clinics from a lengthy illness. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 28 at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church, 3650 Cottage Grove Avenue, S.E., Cedar Rapids, with Fr. Fred Shaheen presiding. Burial will follow in St. George Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the church where there will be a 7 p.m. Trisagion service. Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids is in charge of arrangements.
Rania was born
September 30, 1981 in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Mounif and Houda Bechaalany Shaheen. She graduated from Washington High School in 1999. Among the things she enjoyed were swimming and spending time with her friends and family, especially her dog, Sweetie.
Rania is survived by her parents, two brothers Chris Shaheen of Cedar Rapids and Dorey (Amber) Shaheen of Fairfax, a grandmother Mariam Bechaalany of Lebanon, her aunts, uncles and their families in Canada, Lebanon and the United States: Nasr Shaheen, Akl Shaheen, Bishara Shaheen, Georges Shaheen, Mounifa Shaheen, Joseph Bechaalany, Georges Bechaalany, Elias Bechaalany, Boutros Bechaalany, Mikhael Bechaalany, Rosette Elias, Malakeh Yammine, Marta Khazza, Odette Mechaalany as well as many cousins including George and Salam Daoud and Elias Elias of Cedar Rapids, and a best friend John Burgett of Cedar Rapids.
Rania is preceded in death by her grandparents Fouad and Lutfiyeh Shaheen and Jamil Bechaalany and her uncle Nicola Shaheen.
Although Rania lived a young life here on earth, she fought a very courageous, lifelong battle with cystic fibrosis. She had a beautiful spirit of joy that shone everywhere she went. She endured a life journey beyond her years. Rania was the light of her parents’ lives, and her brothers adored her as well. She will never be forgotten, and her absence is only physical. Precious memories of Rania’s loving ways, graceful nature, and vibrancy for life will fill her family’s world for all eternity!

Carson, Gladys A.
Cemetery: Anderson ~ Swisher
Gladys A. Carson, 89 of Ely, died Tuesday, August 11 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha following a stroke. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 15, 2009 at St. John Lutheran Church, with Reverend Jeff Borgwardt presiding. Burial will follow in Anderson Cemetery in Swisher. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, temporarily located at 3100 F Avenue NW.
Gladys was born
November 23, 1919 in Swisher, the daughter of John and Mary Josifek Kulhavy. She was a graduate from Shueyville High School. On November 26, 1941 at First Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids, she married Keith E. Carson. Gladys was actively involved in the Ely community. Her involvement included the Dorcas Society, Senior Dining, St. John Lutheran Church, Ely Public Library, Friendship Club, Town and Country, TOPS, recognized for a 30 year achievement of KOPS, and a member of Shepherd of the Desert Lutheran Church in Sun City, Arizona. Gladys was a 4-H leader for 8 years, a lifelong Republican and poll worker. She was very proud of her Czech heritage. Gladys had a big heart and was always there to lend a helping hand. Faith and family were incredibly important to her.
Gladys is survived by her sons: David (Judie) Carson of Wheatland, John (Julie) Carson of Mission Viejo, California, and Tim (Christine) Carson of Palo; a daughter Marjorie Carson Zach of Cedar Rapids; Grandchildren: Dennis (Leigh) Carson, Daryl (Julie) Carson, Dani (Willie) Newman and Katie Carson, Joshua and Jenna Zach, Curt and Luke Carson; great-grandchildren: Janay and Blake and Austin, a brother Milo (Helen) Kulhavy of Casa Grande, Arizona, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Keith E. Carson on July 16, 2005 and a son, Michael Carson, a brother Lumir Kulhavy, and sisters Marie Salon, and L. Irene Swaney.

Anna Marie Miller, 89 of Solon, died Thursday, August 13, 2009 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 17, 2009 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Solon, with Fr. David Wilkening presiding. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where there will be a 7 p.m. vigil. Brosh Chapel in Solon is in charge of arrangments.
Anna was born
August 30, 1919 in Iowa City, the daughter of George and Gertrude Rohret Haman. She graduated from Cosgrove High School. She worked for a few years in the Newborn Nursery at Mercy Hospital until she married George Miller on February 18, 1941 in Cosgrove. She was involved in many civic and church organizations including Forresters, the Altar and Rosary Society at St. Marys’, a 4-H leader, as well as a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and a volunteer with Johnson County Cancer Society. Anna liked to travel, spending the winter in Mesa, playing pinochle and golf. Family and farming were very important to her all her life. She was a very devoted wife, mother and grandmother to all and will be greatly missed.
Anna is survived by her children Mary Anne (Dennis) Erenberger of Ely, Sharon (Robert) Kramer of Greenwood, Indiana, Susan (Steven) Julius of Solon, Donald Miller of Solon, Dean Miller (Patty Anson) of Solon; ten grandchildren Lisa (Joseph) Whitehead, Thomas (Krystin) Erenberger, Kate (Brandon) Scheer, Erika (Andy) Switzer, Brad (Stephanie) Kramer, Denise (Robert) Imoehl, Jeff (Dawn) Bair, Steve Miller, Amy Miller and Andy Miller; fourteen great-grandchildren; a brother George (Dorothy) Haman, and sisters Monica Krall and Alice (Robert) Walter.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband as well as two sons David Miller and Steve Miller, a daughter in law Patti Divoky-Miller; a brother Eugene Haman, and a brother in law Harold Krall.

Arnold, William
William “Bill” Arnold, 90 of Iowa City, formerly of Appleton, Wisconsin, died Monday, September 7, 2009 at Mercy Hospital. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 12, 2009 at Solon United Methodist Church with Rev. Scott Meador presiding. Brosh Chapel in Solon is in charge of arrangements.
Bill was born
January 4, 1919 in Iron Mountain, Michigan, the son of Eugene and Katherine (Patrick) Arnold. Bill proudly served as Captain in the United States Army during World War II. He was stationed in Little Rock, Arkansas and was involved in the production of munitions and chemical weapons. He married Marion Ruth Thomas on August 18, 1942 in Pontiac, Michigan. Bill worked as a Chemical Engineer for Kimberly Clark Corp. in Kimberly, Wisconsin for many years until his retirement. Bill enjoyed golf, tennis, swimming, and figure-skated until he was 84 years old. He enjoyed spending time with his family, and traveling, especially to Lake Cumberland in Kentucky and to Tuscon, Arizona.
Bill is survived by his wife, Marion Ruth of Iowa City ; daughters, Karen (Otto) Hatlestad of Schaumburg, Illinois and Jean (Jim) Leighton of Solon; five grandchildren, Greg (Bridget) Hatlestad, Doug (Sherry) Hatlestad, Todd Hatlestad, Heather (Ed) Leighton-Dick, and Spence (Lisa) Leighton; and eight great-grandchildren, Erin, Danny, Brian, Sarah, Jack, Sam, Eva, and Cael.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Earl Arnold.

Feuss, Elmer
Cemetery: Lisbon Cemetery
Elmer Feuss, 79 of Lisbon, died Thursday, September 10, 2009 surrounded by family at the Mechanicsville Nursing and Rehab Center following a lengthy illness. Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 14, 2009 at Brosh Chapel in Solon. Private family inurnment will follow in Lisbon Cemetery. Full Military Rites will be conducted by the Lisbon American Legion.
Elmer was born
September 29, 1929 in Toronto, Iowa, the son of William A. and Frieda D. (Kriepke) Feuss. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1950 to 1954 serving during the Korean Conflict. Elmer married the love of his life, Marie Short on August 4, 1956 in Lisbon. Elmer and Marie were married 41 years. He was a farmer for most of his life and retired from Mobile Home Service Repair in 1986. Elmer was a member of the Lisbon American Legion for over 20 years and the VFW Post 788 for over 26 years.
Elmer is survived by his daughters, Lynette (Ric) Graves of Viola and Mary Ann (Robert) Jilovec of Mechanicsville; six grandchildren, Angie, John, Julie, Dustin, Cody and Kim; eleven great grandchildren; brothers, Bill (Evelyn) Feuss of Lisbon and Edward (Claudia) Feuss of Mt. Vernon; and sisters, Arnita Feuss and Arlene (William) Galloway of Cedar Rapids.
Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marie; four brothers including one in infancy; and a sister.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Mechanicsville Nursing and Rehab Center staff and the Hospice of Iowa staff for all of their loving care and support.
