Spellerberg, Richard Lawrence

Cemetery: St. Patrick's Cemetery, near Fairfax

Richard Lawrence Spellerberg, 84 of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, October 22, 2009 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 26, 2009 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids. Burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery near Fairfax. Full military rites will be conducted by the Ely American Legion. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, temporarily located at 3100 F Avenue NW, Cedar Rapids, where there will be a 7 p.m. vigil.

Richard was born icon December 13, 1924 in Fairfax. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Jane Ann Dollarhide on August 1, 1961 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Walford. He farmed near Ely until retiring in 1993. Richard was a member of the Ely American Legion and St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. He enjoyed music, dancing, watching Cub games and Mt. Vernon baseball games as well as going to the Waverly Draft Horse Shows.

Richard is survived by his wife, Jane; his children, Rick (Minoo) Spellerberg of Indianola, Larry (Cindy) Spellerberg of Grimes, and Mary (Kirk) Montgomery of Lisbon; five grandchildren, Mosa, Ryan and Sara, and Katelyn and Regina; sisters, Dorothy Schulte of Norway, and Antoinette Kloubec of Marion; brothers, Matt Spellerberg, Bob Spellerberg both of Fairfax and Clarence (Arlene) Spellerberg of Cedar Rapids.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son Michael David in 2002; his brother William “Bill.” Spellerberg; and brother in laws Jim Schulte and Vernon Kloubec.

Memorials may be directed to either Hospice of Mercy and or the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy.

Wilson, Wesley Allen

Cemetery: Campbell Cemetery

Wesley Allen Wilson, 92 of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at St. Luke’s Living Center West. Graveside services will be 4 p.m., Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at Campbell Cemetery. Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids is in charge of arrangements.

Wesley was born icon May 12, 1917 in Margesan, Wisconsin, the son of Alfred and Ella M. (Leuptow) Wilson. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII. He married Marion Georgia Chapin on December 31, 1945. They were later divorced. Wes worked as a Carpenter and laborer until 1980 and he worked as a Cedar Rapids Parking System’s Cashier until his retired on September 3, 1997. He was a member of the VFW Post 788. In his free time Wes enjoyed fishing and the outdoors.

Wes is survived by his daughter, Sheila Gatewood (Francis Sundberg) of Cedar Rapids; sister, Ferne Langlitz of Oshkosh, WI; sister-in-law Wilma Wilson of Oshkosh, WI; and three nieces and three nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Lori Kay Wilson; son-in-law, Gary Gatewood; brother, Eugene Wilson; sister, Nyla Macho; and his former wife, Marion.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to St. Luke’s Living Center West and St. Luke’s Hospice for their wonderful care.

Memorials may be directed to the family at 974 Cedar Crest Road SE, Cedar Rapids.

Shoemaker, Shirley M.

Cemetery: Merle Hay Mausoleum

Shirley M. Shoemaker, 79 of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 9, 2009 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, temporarily located at 3100 F Avenue NW. A visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the chapel. A private family inurnment will be held in Merle Hay Mausoleum in Des Moines.

Shirley was born icon April 20, 1930 in Hillsboro, Illinois the daughter of Lloyd and Lenna Weller Caulk. She married E.J. Shoemaker on April 17, 1949 in Hillsboro. They moved to Virginia Beach, Virginia for a few years until they moved to Davenport to raise their family. In 1959, they moved to West Burlington and stayed until moving to Cedar Rapids in 1966, while in Cedar Rapids she started her career with the Cedar Rapids School System. In 1980 they moved to Urbandale as E.J.’s career moved them to the area. While in Urbandale, she worked at Younkers. E.J. died in July 1985. After his death Shirley moved to Cedar Rapids and enjoyed her retirement. Shirley loved to watch old mystery television shows, traveling, and spending time with her family, especially the grand children. She was an avid bridge player and enjoyed the time with her Friday morning breakfast club.

Shirley is survived by a daughter Kristie (Desmond) Young of Fallbrook, California; a son Brad (Elaina) Shoemaker of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren Derek and Doug Outlaw, Jessica and Daniel Wirth and Ryan Shoemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a daughter Gayle Davisson.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy.

Bys, Margaret Ruth

Cemetery: Czech National Cemetery

Margaret “Ruth” Bys, 91 of Hallmark Care Center, died Thursday, November 5, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center. As per Ruth’s wishes, a private family inurnment will be at a later date in Czech National Cemetery. There will be no visitation or services. Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids is charge of arrangements.

Ruth was born icon June 21, 1918 on the farm in rural Linn County, the daughter of Ludvik and Julia (Cerveny) Petrak. She married William E. Bys on October 12, 1938. Ruth was active in the Linn County Farm Bureau and was a 4-H leader for many years. She enjoyed cooking and gardening. Bill and Ruth loved to go to dances throughout the area and listen to polkas. She was very proud of her Czech heritage. They enjoyed wintering for many years in Apache Junction, Arizona as well as the cabin on the Cedar River.

Ruth is survived by her children, Carlyle Bys of Bertram, Thiara Smith of Bettendorf, Barbara Michael of San Antonio, Texas, Ramona Thompson of Austin, Texas, and William Bys Jr. of Sutliff, and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William E., two brothers and three sisters.

Memorials may be directed to the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library.

Chaney, Gary Lynn

Gary Lynn Chaney, 54 of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, November 13 in his home. A memorial visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, November 18 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, temporarily located at 3100 F Avenue NW, where there will be a 7 p.m. Celebration of Life Service for Gary. A private family inurnment will be at a later date. Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids is in charge of arrangements.

Gary was born icon March 26, 1955 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Gene and Gladys Megonigle Chaney. He was a union painter for over 20 years in Cedar Rapids and was a proud member of the local #447. Gary loved to hunt, fish, go mushroom hunting and woodworking. He loved to spend time with his friends and share stories of life and always enjoyed a good beer and a cigarette.

Gary is survived by his sons Terry (Andrea) Chaney of Brandon and Tony Chaney (Bridget Holladay) of Brandon; Makayla, Lyndsey and Langston Chaney; a brother Greg Chaney (Candy Lidey) of Cedar Rapids; a nephew Brad (Amanda) Chaney of Rapid City, South Dakota; and his good buddy Monte Kraft of Cedar Rapids.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Jerred, Howard "Tom"

Cemetery: Oakland Cemetery

Howard Tom Jerred, 58 of Solon, died Friday, November 20, 2009 at St. Luke’s Hospital of complications from open heart surgery. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Iowa City. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery, Solon at 1:30 p.m. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Brosh Chapel in Solon.

Tom was born icon October 13, 1951 in Ottumwa, the son of Howard Thomas “Howdy” Jerred Sr. and Ethel Irene Mooney Jerred. He married Lorna Mae Roe on June 27, 1971 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ottumwa. Tom graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1969 as well as graduating from Indian Hills Community College in 1971. Tom worked for over 37 years for Pearson as an IT Specialist. He was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and served as an Elder, was a Youth Group Leader, and played the drums in the Praise Band. He was involved in the Compassionate Friends as an editor for the newsletter and also was a Chapter Leader. He loved to raise cattle and recently started a DJ service, Its All About You. Tom was a kind and loving husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed by all.

Tom is survived by his wife, Lorna; a son Ryan Thomas Jerred of Iowa City; daughters Amy Lynn (Chad Richard) Conrad of Mt. Vernon, and Megan Sue Jerred of Solon; two grandchildren Rebecca Anne Conrad and Nathan Thomas Conrad, his mother Ethel Irene Jerred of Ottumwa; a sister Janice Marie (Herb Leo) Greenfield of Ottumwa; his nephew Derek Allen Greenfield of Solon and niece Shannon Marie Greenfield of Ottumwa.

He was preceded in death by his father Howard Thomas Jerred Sr., and a daughter Emily Anne Jerred.

Memorials may be directed in his name to The Heart Connection Children’s Cancer Program in 1221 Center Street, Suite 12 Des Moines, IA 50309-1014.

Hubbard, Jacquelin S.

Cemetery: Glendale Cemetery

Jacquelin S. Hubbard, 60 of St. Luke’s Living Center West, died Saturday, November 21, 2009 at St. Luke’s Hospital. Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, temporarily located at 3100 F Avenue NW. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids. Burial will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.

Jacquelin was born icon December 21, 1948 in Des Moines, the daughter of Leland and Jane (Mitchell) Secor.

Jacquelin is survived by her father, Leland of Hiawatha; sons, Steven Lee Hubbard and Chris Hubbard; daughter, Kim Hubbard all of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Andy, Joe, Cole, Kelsey, Brad, Zach, and Brody; and her long-time friend, Carol Klauser.

She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Hazel Mitchell; her mother, Jane Secor; and her granddaughter, Jessica Simmons.
