Kinkead, Emma Mary

Cemetery: Shiloh Cemetery

Emma Mary Kinkead, 89, of Marion, died Saturday, December 5, 2009 at St. Luke’s Hospital. Memorial services will be 6 p.m. Tuesday, December 8, 2009 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, temporarily located at 3100 F Avenue NW, with Rev. Lloyd Brockmeyer presiding. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until service time at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids. Private family inurnment will be at a later date at Shiloh Cemetery.

Emma was born icon August 22, 1920 in Dubuque, the daughter of James and Emma (Weisenberger) Garvey. She married Peter Kinkead on September 13, 1947 in Louisville, Kentucky.

Emma is survived by her sons, Jim (Pat) Olsen of Colorado and Donald (Nancy) Olson of South Carolina; three grandchildren, Angie Etscheidt of Cedar Rapids, Cindy (Chad) Noska of Walker, and Jessica (Andrew) Adams of South Carolina; five great grandchildren, Brandon, Jonathan, Jordan, Cole, and Brady; half-brother, Earl (Betty) Graves of Dubuque; and her daughter-in-law, Betty Olson of Cedar Rapids.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Pete, in 1968; and her brother, James Garvey.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Ludvicek, Marguerite Susan

Cemetery: Castek Cemetery - near Swisher

Marguerite Susan Ludvicek went home to be with the Lord on Friday, December 11, 2009 following a brief illness. She will be missed by Her six children, and seven grandchildren and anyone else who had the blessing to have known her.

Her celebration of life will be at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, temporarily located at 3100 F Avenue NW, at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 17. Burial will follow in Castek Cemetery, near Swisher. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Polehna, Milton Charles

Cemetery: Czech National Cemetery

Milton Charles Polehna, 79, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, December 18, 2009 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. Memorial and Masonic Services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 21, 2009 at Hus Memorial Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in Czech National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, temporarily located at 3100 F Avenue NW. Visitation will also be an hour prior to the service Monday at the church.

Milton was born icon January 11, 1930 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Czechslovakian immigrant parents Andrew and Blanche Novak Polehna. He served in the US Army during the Korean Confict. He married Joyce Heral on June 25, 1950 at Hus Memorial Presbyterian Church. He and his father owned Andrew Polehna and Son Meats, and he also worked for Wilson Foods. He was a Past Master of Crescent Lodge 25, a 32 Degree Free Mason, and the El Kahir Shriners. Milt was a member of Sokol, Hus Memorial Presbyterian Church, and CSA. He enjoyed fishing and hunting as well as spending time with his family.

Milt is survived by his children Mike (Joni) Polehna of Stillwater, Minnesota, Tom (Priscilla) Polehna of Cedar Rapids, Christine (Paul) Hartman of Cedar Rapids, four grandchildren Katy (Matt) Stolba, Andrew (Katie) Polehna, Jordan Polehna and Tim (Anya) Polehna and two great-grandchildren, and a sister Dorothy Ditch of Ely.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Joyce Polehna, a son Todd Polehna, a brother Aldrich Polehna, and his stepmother Rose Bartunek Polehna.

A memorial fund has been established in his name.

The family would like to send a special thank to you the staff at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice Home of Mercy as well as Hospice of Mercy.

Westwood, Elsie

Cemetery: Oakland - Solon

Elsie (Buckmayer) Westwood, 92 of Las Vegas, Nevada, formerly of Solon, died December 24, 2009. Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. Friday, January 15, 2010 at Oakland Cemetery, Solon. Brosh Chapel in Solon is in charge of arrangements.

Elsie was born icon July 30, 1916, the daughter of James and Annie (Zeman) Buckmayer. Elsie graduated from Marquette University in Milwaulkee, Wisconsin in June 1949 with a bachelor’s degree in nursing education. She worked as a nurse and went on to become an anesthesiologist. Elsie married Claude Westwood in Los Angeles, California.

Elsie is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Youkey, Joseph Harold

Cemetery: Memory Gardens - Iowa City

Joseph “Harold” Youkey, 83 of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, December 27, 2009 at Legacy Gardens in Iowa City. Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, temporarily located at 3100 F Avenue NW. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, temporarily located at 3100 F Avenue NW.

Joseph was born icon December 28, 1925 in West Liberty, the son of Joseph and Elsie (Amrine) Youkey. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army’s 141st Infantry from May 8, 1944 to May 31, 1946, where he received two bronze stars. Harold married Marjorie Klein on September 24, 1946 in Iowa City. He retired as a Building Inspector for the City of Cedar Rapids in 1991.

Harold is survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Marjorie.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Serbousek, Thelma Marie

Cemetery: St. Patrick's Cemetery

Thelma Marie (Kahle) Serbousek, 88, of Fairfax, died Sunday, January 3, 2010 at St. Luke’s Hospital. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Friday, January 8, 2010 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fairfax. Burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fairfax where there will be a 7 p.m. prayer service and an hour prior to services Friday at the church. Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids is in charge of arrangements.

Thelma was born icon December 17, 1921 south of Watkins, the daughter of Herman and Eleanor (Schulte) Kahle. She married William L. Serbousek on April 17, 1940 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Norway. Thelma enjoyed tending to her beautiful gardens. She had many creative talents from writing poetry, drawing, sewing, and gardening. She had a strong faith and devotion to the Blessed Mother. Among all of her talents her greatest were her dedication to the happiness of her family.

Thelma is survived by her children, William G. (Patricia) Serbousek, Paula (Wayne) Holub, Mark (Sandy) Serbousek, and Greg (Sarah) Serbousek; nine grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren; sister, Lee (Kahle) Atherton; sister-in-laws, Irene Kahle and Myra Serbousek; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William L. Serbousek; a son, Douglas P.; granddaughter, Sarah (Serbousek) Miller; and brothers, Sylvester, Raphael, and Francis.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Roman, Alma B.

Cemetery: St. John's Cemetery

Alma B. Roman, 99, Detroit Lake, MN, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, January 8, 2010 at Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 15, 2010 at All Saints Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, temporarily located at 3100 F Avenue NW.

Alma Bertha Roman was born icon November 3, 1910 in Linn County, the daughter of Joseph and Amelia (Novak) Dohnalek. She was raised on a farm in Linn County and graduated from high school in 1928. Alma was united in marriage to Ernest Roman September 15, 1934 in Cedar Rapids. They made their home in Cedar Rapids where she worked for Collins Radio, retiring in 1972. Ernest died in 1999 and Alma moved to Detroit Lakes, MN in 2001.

Alma enjoyed baking, deserts, and raising African Violets.

Survivors include a daughter: Beverly (Joseph) Horacek of Detroit Lakes, MN; two grandchildren: Cindy (Dave) Kingrey and Richard (Lisa) Horacek; four great grandchildren: Grace and Sarah Kingrey; Quinn and Avery Horacek; a sister: Gladys Peterson of Cedar Rapids. In addition to her husband, Ernest, she was preceded in death by a brother, William Dohnalek.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Rompot, Sadie Marie

Cemetery: Cedar Memorial Cemetery

Sadie Marie Rompot, 87 of 104 Outlook Drive SW, passed away from this life on Sunday, January 10, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center following a short illness. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, January 14, 2010 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church with burial to follow in Cedar Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, temporarily located at 3100 F Avenue NW, where there will be a 7 p.m. vigil service.

Sadie was born icon December 9, 1922 in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Albert and Catherine (Schwartzenberger) Sturm Sr. She married Vernon Rompot Sr. on July 26, 1941. On their 40th anniversary Vernon was baptized, First Holy Communion, Confirmation, and their marriage validated in the Catholic Church. Sadie was president of the Tyler PTA and worked in the school cafeteria. She then worked at Armstrong Departments Store in the Marketing Department, retiring in 1984. Sadie was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. In Sadie and Vern’s retirement they loved to go camping in their little camper with their dog, Bozo. Sadie also loved her animals. She enjoyed it when her son Vernie would come home and they would go to the casino. In her last years she also adopted some fish. She said that people would think that she was crazy for talking to fish. Sadie loved her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren very much and she would always worry about them. She loved the Cubs, hoping that they would win the World Series in her lifetime. She also loved to watch her favorite Soap Operas. Sadie always thought of others before she did herself and she will surely be missed by everyone that knew her.

Sadie is survived by two sons, Rev. Mr. Vernon Rompot Jr., KHS of Denver, Colorado and Randy (Margie) Rompot Sr.; one daughter, Susan Mihal (Clyde Melvin); grandchildren, Lisa Thompson, Kelly Mihal, Scott (Holly) Mihal, Heath Mihal, Katie (Keith) Borden, Randy Rompot Jr., Adam Rompot, Matt (Sarah) Melvin, and Dennis Kramer Jr.; great grandchildren, Rochelle Jackson, DeShone Jackson, Kegan, Kennedy, Kylie, Kameron, and Kyrah Borden, Tanner and Cael Mihal, Jacobi and Jonah Rife, Jackie Lyman, Tristen and Johnathan Melvin; daughter-in-law, Barbara Rompot; sisters-in-law, Josephine Rompot, Sylvia Ulch, Gladys Sturm, Maxine Sturm; and brother-in-law, Don (Sandy) Rompot,

Sadie was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Rompot Sr. on November 16, 1994; son, Albert Rompot on April 13, 2006; infant daughter, Lori Ann; great grandson, Iszack Rompot on September 22, 2008; brothers, Joseph, Albert, and Frank Sturm; and a sister, Josephine Hendrix.

Memorials may be directed to the Cedar Valley Humane Society in her name.
